I just can't imagine how hard was for Brian, Roger and John to sing and play this song ... 😢
Brian wrote it and sent the tape to Roger, but Rog put it somewhere and forgot to listen to it. 😮 After months he found it and excitedly rang Brian saying it has to be done as a Queen song. You need to watch how they made this amazing video (directed by Rudi Dolezal) and how Brian is saying what happened at the end with the glass of champagne just before Rudi calls cut... 😮
Brian and Roger to this day sense Freddie around them and I'm sure John does it too.
Brian has Freddie's (Queen's) touring piano at his home (he bought and completely restored it), Roger has Freddie's big statue (the one that stood at the entrance of London Dominion Theatre where musical We Will Rock You was playing from 2002 - 2013, but replayed in 2023), standing in his garden 😮 and John has Queen's synth that Freddie gave him ... 💔

😭❤ I am glad you guys liked this tribute. It's such a beautiful song. And it was John's last. He retired from playing after this, saying he couldn't do it anymore. Nowadays, he simply says "I don't do that anymore" if asked about returning. It takes a lot to simply disappear from the world of music stardom, but I have a lot of respect for John, as he enjoys a quiet life now.

Freddie was and is extremely loved, by his friends, the band, and practically everyone who knew him, and the way he is still remembered by all of them with affection and pain only proves this. If each member of Queen were asked who their best friend was, they would all say Freddie, especially in their last years together when they became even closer. Freddie won over him with his simplicity, kindness and charisma and was extremely generous with those he loved and even with strangers.
There is a really moving interview with Elton John talking about Freddie that also shows that, even when he was sick, Freddie cared about and remembered his friends. Also the story of the birthday notebook that I always kept so I wouldn't forget anyone.
I will always think that all the admiration for Freddie as a person and artist will never be enough, and it's horrible to know how he was persecuted with the worst intentions in his last years, it's good that he had good people by his side 👑❤️

There are so many subtle acknowledgments to Freddie: the artwork shown was drawn by Freddie, some of the lyrics are from other songs, Freddie’s piano (and even how Brian is playing is more of a “plinky” style like Freddie) the champagne on the piano… but the one thing that I am always drawn to with this video is how broken John looks. He was devastated by losing Freddie. This was his last performance with Queen.

Yes, they had their differences. Hurt feelings, walk outs, walks away, pressure and irritation. But they understood that pressure and irritation could produce miracles. Pressure on a lump of coal, in time produces a Diamond. A grain of sand causes irritation to an oyster, creating a pearl. In the end, mutual respect for each other does impose pressure and irritation to not disappoint. To work for a common goal, rethink, rework, adjust and trust. While their disagreements were sometimes volatile, often foolish, like brothers, they never abandoned the focus of their relationship beyond the band. Brian and Roger, the most obstinate and argumentative of the four, still consider themselves,”brothers” and continue to generate new fans for Freddie and for Queen. This is a 50 year relationship. Longer than most marriages. Sorry for the simplistic analogy. Love your channel. 👑🎤🎹🎸🥁

Thank you for this very special reaction. I can't watch this video without getting goosebumps and welling up with tears. But, even so, I keep coming back.
Yes, the boys had both little squabbles, and big disagreements, but they always managed to settle their differences and move on together. That was due to the love and respect they held for each other. Like brothers.
Brian wrote the song as a kind of catharsis after Freddie's death, and sent a copy to Roger, who stuffed it in a drawer and forgot about it for a few months. Once he finally listened to it, he called Brian and insisted that they had to release it as a Queen song. John agreed to join in, for Freddie, but it was the last time he played with them before withdrawing from public life altogether, although he still runs the business side of the band. He looks so sad in the video.... 😢
If you'd like to see more of Brian singing, try his solo version of 'Too Much Love will Kill You' from his 'Brian May Official' channel. It's beautiful. Full of raw emotion...

Queen + Adam Lambert will always be controversial. I _finally_ braved a listen/watch recently and LOVE the way Adam molds the classic Queen songs with a great take of his own. Brian and Roger would *never* ruin anything Freddie touched; they loved him as a brother. What Roger and Bri are doing is keeping Queen alive in a unique and wondrous way. They have not written new songs, do not sing new songs, they are always the original Queen songs. (Unlike they did with Paul Rodgers... a total flop they knew not to repeat.) For me, it's mostly stunning to see a 76 year old (Brian) and a 74 year old (Roger) perform for 2 hours every other night for weeks on end. Inspirational for sure! All the original Queen members will be gone very soon. This opportunity to see the amazing guitarist and incredible drummer (and soaring vocalists, both of them!) is a gift in time.

Brian released an album as a solo project.
If you want to compare styles, I recommend Too Much Love Will Kill You, first by Queen, followed by Brian May's version.
It was recorded by Queen initially with Freddie singing, but Brian felt it wasn't as strong as other songs to put on a Queen album, so he released it as a solo project. In their Greatest Hits III album, Queen released their version after Freddie's death.
I would also have a look at the song Driven By You, written for a commercial in the UK to promote Ford Motorcars. Don't let that put you off though. I recall it was held off No.1 in the UK singles charts by the re-release of Bohemian Rhapsody right after Freddie's death.

At the end you hear a thud, it was John dropping his guitar on the floor as if to say 'i'm done' - John took Freddie's passing very hard, the two were very close. John was Freddie's choice to join the band and as John found it hard being in the limelight Freddie sheltered him, i believe John still is involved in Queens business affairs. When Queen began to manage themselves and take control of their tours etc John was the business brains behind them - he also designed many of the stage lighting and guitar amps etc. I believe John fell into a depressive period following Freddie's passing, he's such a humble and great guy.

If I remember correctly, the proceeds from this single went to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the charity formed by the surviving Queen members to fund AIDS education and treatment efforts. The Trust's efforts are believed to have contributed to the 55% decline in AIDS deaths worldwide since 2004, particularly in Africa, which remains the epicenter of the AIDS pandemic. Freddie's final public act was to issue a press release announcing that he was suffering from the disease, and calling upon his fans to join in the fight against it. He died the next day, but his legacy lives on, both in his music and in the lives saved by the efforts of the Trust that bears his name.

There isn't enough words to sum up Freddie as he was a one off. I was hit hard by his death as I found out on the morning news the day I was due to start work as 16 year old in 1991. Brian and Roger are both great singers bringing their own dynamic to the band but there'll never be another Freddie. I can't bring myself to listen to Adam Lambert sing Queen songs as he's just not in the same league as a singer or performer on stage. For myself I can only listen to the original foursome of Queen and never tire of it.

Great reaction as always, the first opening line "A hand above the water, an Angel reaching for the sky" is symbolic to the statute of Freddie at Montreux overlooking his favourite lake and all the swans that he took comfort from when his heath was starting to deteriorate, nobody bothered him in Montreux and he loved it, hence the statute there. However, from an angle his hand looks just to be above the water of the lake and the other one reaching for the sky" that is where they got that line from, Brian told the story somewhere. There are many subtle visual tributes in this song, the most upsetting one to me is where they have put a glass of Freddie's favourite Louis Roederer Cristal champagne on the piano, which is what you see clearly when the lights go down. If you do the "One Vision Documentary (the right version) you will see him swigging this while creating the song !!! They also had Freddie's book of art drawings opened on the piano, he was an amazing at drawing/art. My heart goes out to John in this video as after this he simply couldn't carry on without Freddie to whom he had a very very very special bond with, and his death (together with the death of his father around the same time) affected him greatly :( carry on with the Queen reactions you'll have followers forever RIP my hero Freddie 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛

For Queen fans there is great symbolism in this video that is so touching, apart from the song. Notice the details of how it was done and the words of the song. The "hand above the water" - the statue of Freddie in Montreux. The empty chair next to the piano, the open sketchbook, Freddie's piano, the glass of champagne, etc. The way the camera come into the room and "walks" around, coming from the image of the angel and returning there at the end. I will probably be proved wrong, but I always thought the voice at the end that says "cut" is Freddie's. There is a great "making of" video about this song somewhere on CZcams, well worth a watch. Many consider “No-One But You (Only the Good Die Young)” to be the last Queen song proper, albeit without Freddie, who died in 1991. The three remaining Queen members pay homage to the deceased frontman in this 1997 single, written by guitarist Brian May. Shortly after this song’s release, bassist John Deacon quietly retired.
The very first line, "A hand above the water..." is a reference to the posthumous Freddie Queen album "Made In Heaven" with the picture of the famous larger-than-life statue of Freddie that dominates the shores of Lake Geneva in Montreux, Switzerland. Freddie’s arm, and hand, appear to be above the water, depending on the angle.
In November 1997, during a press conference in Cologne, Brian is quoted as follows after being asked about recording a song without Freddie, in retrospect,.
"Quite strange. We’re without Freddie the whole time and it’s taking a lot of time getting used to it. This was originally intended not to happen. The song was just there. It is only because Roger and John reacted to the song and said they wanna do it. I have to say it was very good. It was very magical really. I think we felt like Freddie was there in spirit because the song is about him anyway. And there are lots of little trademarks in there. There are lots of little quotes, that are very Queen-like, very Freddie-like.

Brian's singing tributes to Queen would be "Sail Away Sweet Sister", "Sleeping on the Sidewalk", "Too Much Love Will Kill You", and the one song they all sing on, "Let Me Live", they take turns each singing a verse, and of course his astrophysicist song, a classic Queenie favorite, " '39 " , story of traveling spaceships... many wonderful tunes... and memories...
Thanks again for such dedication and devotion to the most successful rock band in history, not to mention the most beloved... blessings.

This was the last time from memory John worked with Sir Brian and Roger, the song was released in 1997 after being started a few years earlier and put in a draw, and ended up being for Fred along with Diana Princess Of Wales and a designer who was murdered in the States who knew Fred and the rest of the group. They have all had solo careers albeit John in the background, he's the most reluctant person and rarely seen these days, after Fred passed away he didn't want the group carrying on, Fred took the spotlight off of him and kept him safe, John still lives in the same house he bought about 50 years ago with his wife, they had six children so likely have grandchildren now, he's still involved with the business side of the group, but they haven't spoken in years, which both Sir Brian and Roger respect

@@CoachCastTV they were all like brothers, but John was always the quiet one, if you watch interviews John rarely says very much, he'll join in the conversation but considering his job he wasn't great with coping, even Freddie was extremely shy away from work, I think they had a lot in common

In regards to not hearing Queen on the radio in the 80s it was due to their video for I Want To Break Free. Queen invented the Music Video when they couldn't preform Bohemian Rhapsody live on Top Of The Pops TV station in England due to all the overdubs. To compensate they made a short film performing the song and sent that to the TV stations to play instead of performing it live. When they made the video for I Want To Break Free the band dressed in drag as depicted on the English Show "Coronation Street". MTV in the US said they wouldn't show it and asked the band to make another video of just a live performance, the band refused. Freddie wouldn't tour in the US unless they were touring a hit and with no air play they lost America.

I had the privilege to attend one Queen show in 1984. Been a fan since. I'm a bass player and joined a newly founded Queen cover/tribute band last year. I'm REALLY trying hard to convince my bandmates to finish our stage time with this song and not with the tradtitional God Save The Queen instrumental. It's such a simple, yet touchy and beautiful song, and it'd be a perfect last song in remembrance of Freddie Mercury. I hope I gonna succeed with my proposal ...
Btw, I'd try to sing the Roger part, albeit one octave lower ...

Been watching your channel and applaud your reactions to Queen. Some of your questions have been answered i"m sure but hopefully this will help.. Freddie joined Roger and Brian in a band called Smile when their lead singer Tim Staffall left, Freddie convinced them to rename the group "Queen". John joined the band later. Freddie had trouble keeping his microphone intact while jumping and cavorting around the stage and one night it came apart. He liked the result with just the top half and adopted it as his "gimmick" or trademark. Queen during the early years always wore black and white on stage, Freddie especially liked white as it was more visible on stage at night. He would exaggerate his movements so people in the back of the venues could see them. There was a dedicated group of fans that followed the band and got tickets right in front every venue 'til them became known as "The Royal Family". Keep up the good work and Mrs. Coach I too bought Queen clothes at 80 years old!

Story goes that Brian wrote the song did a demo, gave Roger a copy, who put it to one side and forgot about it. Found it one day listened to the demo and got on the phone to Brian and said this has to be recorded!! The rest is history. Sadly this was the last time John played with the remaining members and quietly retired from the music industry, although he is still a director of Queen Productions Ltd.

It’s such a beautiful tribute to Freddie, always makes me emotional. You guys should check out Freddie’s very last music video with Queen which was “These Are The Days Of Our Lives” a song written by Roger about his kids but that fit Freddie’s situation a lot and was his opportunity to say goodbye to his fans one last time. There’s also “The Show Must Go On” there’s no music video done by them for the song but there is an official video compilation Queen did and Freddie’s vocals are insane even though he was so sick, this time written by Brian but it fit his situation better too.
And I don’t know if you guys would want to check out current Queen with Adam but they still sound great, and Adam never tries to imitate Freddie, he’s just his own person with a great voice and that helps Brian & Roger keep doing what they love. If you want to you could maybe watch their performance at the Oscars from 2019 or their performance last year at the Queen’s jubilee, it’s so nice to see Roger & Brian currently still being so passionate about music and as talented as ever. Great reaction!

Brian's got such a great voice, and he was only the third-best singer in Queen.
Someone probably already mentioned this, but this was originally meant to be on Brian's sophomore solo album. Because of the style of the song, he thought Roger's drumming style would be a perfect fit so he asked him to guest on it. One thing led to another and he ended up singing harmonies, then also the second verse, and then they got John involved.
Brian and Roger sang it live in 2002. It was interesting to see them both as frontmen without playing any instruments. A great version.

Back in the old days especially, Freddie would sing his own songs and Brian would, for the most part, sing his own songs. (Sometimes they just sounded better in Freddie's voice. Not always, tho.) As for the other, the great ones turn up long enough to show the rest of us how it's done, and then they get the heck out. All the best, folks!
