Actually the only flaw in this electric water pump is the fact that for whatever reason they decided to put a plastic impeller on it. The previous generation hybrids had a belt driven water pump with a stamped steel impeller. It's not the electric motor that fails on these it's the connection between the shaft and the plastic compeller. This makes it an even stupider place to cheap out. Literally a few cents increase in part cost to go to a stamped metal impeller absolutely unbelievable. This failure can often end up leading to a head gasket failure, the other big failure on these engines is the EGR cooler assembly and the EGR valve plug up or fail to work correctly and can also cause a blown head gasket.
@@pedrofernandez8729 That's what people fail to understand. What's a bit more fuel consumption compared to uber complication and expensive repairs down the line.
Seems absolutely inexcusable to me that they cheaped out and put a plastic impeller on an expensive electric water pump period in the second generation Priuses you had a stamped steel impeller on the water pump shaft. This failure often will lead to a head gasket failure after an overheat, apparently EGR cooler and EGR valve problems also plague this design and can also cause a blown head gasket. What the hell were they thinking
I have the same car and I just did the EGR system and intake manifold cleaning along with the throttle body and pcv valve. I so installed an oil cath can
Price of the water pump isn't as bad as I thought actually. Wonder if the reman units will show up at some point if most failures are with the plastic impeller.
Thanks for the followup, I was one of the curious people who wanted to know the resolution. It's not a surprise that things start failing after 100k. Fixing the impeller to the shaft shouldn't be a big deal. I have to say the pump and thermostat ass'y seem over-complicated and as a result overpriced.
I hope Toyota/Lexus have modified the design in their new hybrids? I am guessing but probably similar pumps are used in electric cars to cool batteries which require liquid cooling?
Thanks for your info. Can you please tell me how to check my 2015 prius water pomp out of the car with a 12 v battery where goes negative and positive out of the 4 pin Thank you
Toyota Specialist, I need your help. I owned a 2010 prius and recently I am facing some issues. I have no check engine codes, but water is broiling out the coolant resovior. No waterpump code , no overheating sign. The fan comes on at 203 degrees. I perform the combustion leak test with the liquid, but no color change. I burp the system for hours the bubbles disappear but return when the cooling fan comes on. Could it still be air. What can I do to get out the remaining air. THANKS
I just got rid my Ct200h similar mileage. I loved that car but it started to vibrate/jerk when you initially start it. The check injection light did show that it was a multiple misfires. Found out that the egr system gets clogged and ends up heating the engine that it might damage the head. Didn’t want to deal with it. Great car but the engine was a VERY BAD DESIGN.
Did you have it checked at the dealership.? I had the same issue. It would start up and make terrible noises.Toyota dealer checked it out and the water pump was frozen and leaked water on my spark plugs causing it to misfire. Runs great now 177,000 miles.
I had similer problom with my lexus It was only one coil but garage told me to change EGR and plugs when i changed EGR and coolant it was still shacking vibrating then finlly AA told me to change no 1 coil so did that but then it had air lock keept loosing water I was told to change head gasket or hole engin Finly i dicied to checks my self I discoverd there was air lock in Radiator system So i removed small inlet raditor piper from coolant botle started the enging that cleard the air i pushed back inlet pipe back on coolant botle and kept it loos for afew minuts The job was don
thanks! I know you don't have time, but you have two videos w/o real process. this one has a little usage start at 6m10s. if you continue this way I'll skip your video.
Lexus engineers.Let's make our water pumps out of plastic so that they can fail just like BMW ones.Keeping my old 2001 Camry. All engine components are metal.
My first reaction was disgust that a WP failed in only 117K miles but then remembered that the pump on my diesel truck failed at about 75K so maybe electric is the future!
@buba garcia Well, you said it. Not only is she a woman, but she is a "woman of color", whatever that means, so everything is not only allowed, but somehow admired. Pretty disgusting.
@buba garcia Thanks, same to you. And, of course, you are right about all that. This is "the future" we were all looking forward to some time ago with great excitement. Little did we know...
"Come onnnnnnn, maaaaaaaaaannnn!" Made me LOL! Another great upload, sir! Thank you for all your amazing work.
Remember when Toyota had simple mechanical water pumps that were cheap? Good times
*0.02 MPG SAVINGS!!!*
JUST THINK OF THE GREEN PROGRESS!

This is why I chose a plain Yaris over the more complicated Prius C when I bought my used car 4 yrs ago. The diff in MPG was not worth it.

With schlong-shaped gaskets?
So clean! Must be a nice change to work on a clean 🚗!
Very interesting. Really sad about the built-in failure rate. Thank you for the excellent information.
The Legend is back fixing that beautiful Lexus 💯🙌
THAT'S ONE CLEAN ENGINE BAY LOOKS LIKE NEW
Interesting information, Peter, thanks for sharing.
Amazingly clean engine bay for a nine year old car!
the dealer power washed it ;(
Gee, that was really instructional we got to see the required parts and their unboxing !
7 minutes of yapping. Didn't do a fucking thing about replacing lol. Real helpful buddy, thanks.
Great stuff as usual. What are your personal favorite Toyota or Lexus make/model/years? Thank you for your videos.

Thank you my friend!

I wonder what the process is for "starting up" AKA priming that expensive bit of kit!
Thinking it's a bit of a process yes? no?
Great video!
Thank you for posting. Very helpful.
Thanks to the plastic part, the unit is designed to fail.
Great videos thanks
what about the rad cap

Do I have to replace thermostat housing when changing water pump?
You are the man😎💪👍💯
Have you thought about when you don't have time to do a full video of the repair just putting up a timelapse of the repair from underhood?
I hope Toyota/Lexus have modified the design in their new hybrids? I am guessing but probably similar pumps are used in electric cars to cool batteries which require liquid cooling?
That car is identical to mine looks wise.
Thanks for your info. Can you please tell me how to check my 2015 prius water pomp out of the car with a 12 v battery where goes negative and positive out of the 4 pin Thank you
Take it to the dealer free diagnostic.

I just did the transmission service on my 04 Tacoma but it turned out that the pan was stripped, made a 1 hour Kobe into a 8 hour job
Thanks to those “I don’t need no stink ‘en torque wrench” guys.
I'm really old school. I didn't realize that cars were being made with electric coolant pumps. However, it does make sense, at least on paper.
Because it's a hybrid
You need to hire a camerawomen!!!

Looks like my 2010 prius engine?
Exact same.
Staying away from Lexus now! Thanks for this alert!
I wouldn’t go that far lol

Fix a 80 series land cruiser please....
That’s impossible, those cars never break down 😂
"Come onnnnnnn, maaaaaaaaaannnn!" show installation? :)
To bad that you don’t show all the process of the repair which is what we are expecting to see.
i watch to see the procedure as best as you can........ watch south main auto centre
Also no engine misfire

Thought electric water pump would be cool but not for $287. I will gladly pay $50 for Asin oem waterpump for Corolla.
They don’t build like they use to thanks
I got sick of watching harris lie during the debate so i came here
@Rexen Prime...indeed! We need to get all legitimate American voters out for the election. The Dems are true traitors! Thanks.

@buba garcia Nothing surprises me anymore.:)
too much plastic dang no hybrid for me....
This is why i don't buy new cars.
Electric water pump is a stupid idea; plastic impeller just add to the insult.
Worst design Toyota ever made!
