  • A Toyota master diagnostic technician shares Toyota EGR diagnosis tips and repair tips for models equipped with the latest generation EGR ( Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
    In this video I start a new segment in my channel on how professional mechanics approach diagnosis. The key aspect of any diagnosis and repairs start with the 3 Cs. Concern, Cause and Correction.
    First we will look at the concern which in this 2010 Toyota Prius. The concern in this case is a vibration or shudder at low speed\low load when the gasoline engine is running.
    I will show you how to isolate the EGR system temporarily to verify that it is indeed the cause of the problem with this Prius.
    I'll also cover the differences between professional mechanic approach to repairs vs. DIY approach to repairs. The car being a customer car changes the approach. Most DIY mechanics will understand that some repair attempts on a budget might be short term or can have a nature of trial and error and are willing to deal with issues not getting resolved right away because they are not incurring labor charges.
    However in the case of professional car repair customers pay mechanics full labor cost to fix the car right the first time. So the approach of diagnosis and repair recommendations can be different than DIY. Mechanics can't make decisions for customers, They can only recommend options and detail the outcome of each so the customer can make a decision.
    In this video I'll show you the process of diagnosis and repair of this EGR system in this 2010 Prius. The owner opted to replace the EGR valve and the intake manifold. I also constantly see folks spending far too much time cleaning the ports, the cooler and the valve to a shiny finish but only to have them covered in soot minutes after starting the engine which is normal.
    Along the way I will share some mechanic tips on general car repair like making your own magnetic socket.
    Also last I will cover the part of this EGR repair that most DIY mechanics miss which actually resolves the problem with the EGR. Simply cleaning or replacing parts does not complete the repair unfortunately.

    Not gonna lie I'm in the middle of a head gasket repair... I would highly recommend diy people to completely disassemble and clear the whole EGR cooler/valve and pipe leaving up to where it connects to the exhaust... Including removing the intake completely and cleaning out the EGR lines in the big black plastic intake housing.... Mine looked like it was full of black bacon grease... It barely let any air through.... All of the parts from the dealer would cost over $1000 to replace.... I cleaned it out with brake cleaner 2 years ago for $30 and it's been fine ever since... Mine had 250k at time of cleaning... We're at 300k now... No issue

      Replacing it is the correct repair for the EGR. The newer part has an updated design. I tried cleaning EGRs to help save some money but I watched the older version being "lazy" switching from open to closed under load. This behavior went away when I replaced the valve with a brand new one. These parts do wear out.

    Did the EGR myself last week. 2012 Prius V with 123K. Absolutely needed the cooler off and soaked. Completely blocked with deposits to the point I had to fish fine wire through each of the small passages.
    Also… found a huge pool of oil in the intake manifold below the throttle body. The PCV valve design looks like it has much to be desired. Replaced the valve and next oil change I’m going to reduce the amount of oil I put back into the crankcase from 4.4 to maybe 4.1 quarts. Gonna see if that keeps it from sucking oil like it did.
    The EGR system cleaning really has the engine running smooth now.

      Hi! Thank you for watching! A temp gauge wouldn’t hurt. However it’s easier to get a small electronic one that uses the computer sensor like a scan gauge or something similar. Less intrusive.

      @@TheCarCareNut Do you mean something that will plug into the under dash OSB port? Banks Engineering has several of these, they will read most computer monitored functions with actual numbers. There are small and you can mount them almost anywhere.

I saw one OBD thru walmart.🤔🙄 MY concern that OBD port? Then when u diagnose, u have to unplug. And so it reads temp thru computer? How, if u have no sensor. Im confused.

      Rice burner Try Bluedriver they are great and sync via Bluetooth to your phone. If want a little more costly go with D8 scanner very affordable as I use one along with my other arsenals for my shop. Hope that helps.

    I really appreciate these videos and the detailed explanations. I do like the DIY work but I really appreciate hearing the viewpoint from a dealer mechanic. If I found one like you I'd probably let the dealer do it more, but I've found my dealer has been sloppy and cut corners (they broke the cabin air filter cover and never replaced it; I know because the dealer performed all maintenance until I did the last one myself). I wish I would've had the "magnetic" socket trick a few days ago because that lower bolt was evil. Keep up the great work and thank you for educating me.

      It all depends on the year, doesn't it? It seems that versions after 2015 have received a number of modifications, segmentation, head gasket, egr valve, much more reliable supposedly, to be confirmed!

    You have reminded me how powerful knowledge is. I love the no BS info and how you present it. I am also a mechanic for more years than I wish to admit and appreciate your efforts. I stumbled across your clips while deciding to take that leap and buy a RAV4 hybrid. Now I find myself ignoring my family while I watch a middle aged man show me a clogged EGR and manifold. You didn’t even need click bait! I hope others appreciate the valuable information you provide. I don’t get on the tools that much these days which worried me regarding what I will no longer get to learn. I guess I have gone the long way around to say thank you.     it would be nice to watch the video before going to Toyota. My 14 Prius had similar symptoms at 160000 miles when I took it to Toyota for diagnostics. The service advisor told me my Prius had an burn oil The repair cost was too expensive, even told me to balance the tire because they didn't know where the vibration was coming from.thank you so much to sharing this info

    I just wanted to let you know how helpful this video was for me. I had this exact issue on my prius and thanks to this video I was able to diagnose the problem and remove the manifold to clean it. The problem is now fixed and the misfire is gone. Thank you!

    Great Video. I really enjoy learning how automotive professionals tackle diagnosis and repair. I'm not much of a DIY person except for very minor stuff (like adding the tire pressure dashboard reporting unit to the TPMS unit on my 2021 Rav4 Hybrid) but I always learn something new from your videos no matter what is being discussed. The electrical tape over a socket was a real "hidden gem" in this video. Keep up the good work and my best wishes for the continued success of your channel. PS.       I use that same trick when replacing spark plugs in 2010? Corolla, it is near the firewall, blocking your tools and I did not have a plug socket with a rubber insert. I used the tape.

    We still have our two old Prius, our 2010 Prius burns lots of oil (common problem) so be sure to check yours. But now we have a P300, P301, P302 engine misfire, so it seems like i'll be trying your EGR valve trick here. We did buy a Tesla and after having it for over a year I must say it is clearly the future. I am never going back to Gas ever again, ever. It's soooooooooo much easier, almsot no maintenance and not millions of little headaches to chase and fail like ICE cars. Thanks for the video, will help squeeze a few more miles out of our Prius (until our next pre-ordered Tesla arrives)

    I would just like to thank you for your informative video, my 2010 Prius was suffering from a very rough tick over, and not sure what the cause was, until I blocked of the EGR outlet like you did and the car went back to running normally.
    Spoke to the local dealer for a price for the EGR valve and was quoted £300+ UK pounds, I had found the part number for the EGR kit you mentioned and they are £52 UK pounds, My car has been into my local dealer today to have the EGR kit fitted today and my car is now running great again, the local dealer wasn’t convinced on my (your) diagnosis of the problem as they have never supplied and fitted a new EGR valve to Prius.
    I have got the old EGR valve off them and sure enough it is stuck open to the point I can’t push the valve back to the closed position. Thanks again for a great video.

      @@ingalway Hi, This is in the UK, I ordered the EGR kit from my local Toyota dealer for £48 with discount, spoke to the service department and they agreed to fit the part I ordered for 2 hours labour, needed it done asap as my Prius is a taxi, I probably could of done it myself but would of taken a day to do it.
      Although the EGR kit car care nut mentions in the video is covered by a USA technical service bulletin, the part is also available from a UK Toyota dealer when ordered by the part number.

    Having a third gen Prius myself, this one really got my attention! I had heard about the EGR cooler problem and didn't know what to do about it. I had not heard of the valve problem. I see the valve from the dealer is not much more than the Rockauto price, so if I have to replace it I will go with the Toyota kit from the TSB.

    I totally agree with you about always replacing a part. In a shop setting or doing work on the side, it never works out on my side to clean the part. I don't ever get come-backs when I replace the part. The initially client complains about the cost, but they always return to me again since that last issue they brought to me was fixed the first time.

    Thank you for this most well done diagnosis and maintenance /replacement video. You are the best for Toyota (DIY) techniques. The dirtiest aspect of combustion can not be solved by "clean gasolines" or " EGR Cleaner in a bottle". Circulation of dirty exhaust gases requires periodic cleaning of the recirculation system.

    Another great video thank you. I take care of a 2010 Prius while the owner is away for 9 months I drive it every few days because in my experience you can’t let a hybrid sit very long because all those computers are monitoring the car still even when it’s off. The first couple of years I did this the 12 volt battery died I suspect from age and not getting enough run time to recharge on its own. I do more driving of the car now and it’s much happier.
    This video you made is so helpful and you’re description of the difference between a professional technician and a do it yourself person was well done 👍 and not offensive to me or I believe any DYI.
    I learned watching this video that the 2010 Prius I look after has this same problem
    I’m going to recommend to the owner that they have a dealer check this out and decide what to do

    I had the EGR prblem in my 2011 Prius the Toyota diller clean the valve and the pipe noting work the ingin light still on
    After three week in the Toyota diller I come to take the car
    Pay for the work and parts and after a 4 kilometre the light ingin come again
    I still driving with that problem and nothing hapend
    I ingnor the orang light
    But listening to the motor or any change that will come
    Now after I saw your video I gone do the all work by my self
    I was impress from your expelning
    About it can never been clean for only for a few weeks or months
    I aleayes follow your best video!!! Keep going

I plan on trying to put 500, 000 miles on it. I had an ECHO that had 423,000 miles on it when a DEER TOOK IT OUT. Have a wonderful day! You are a great teacher!

    Great video, thanks for sharing. I done mine including cooler cleaning, was really cooked, I only replaced the intake manifold gasket orange rubber, amd used the old metal once for anywhere else. I managed to clean the manifold, egr, cooler, pipe , and throttle body at the same time., didn’t replace the egr itself, all done at 139k miles, since then the car drives fine at 175k now. Plans are to clean again at around 200k miles together with all coolant as recommended. 👍✅

    I agreed with what you said after I cleaned my egr awhile back. I regretted to open the egr and clean it up because I ran into leak air issues in the egr after I put it back in where you can hear the hissing sound when the engine warm up for awhile. Great tip btw

    Thanks for the tip - homemade magnetic socket. I use a piece of paper towel which works 99% of the time but sometimes the whole shebang - both nut and paper towel falls so I'll try the electrical tape method the next time. P.S. I love your repair videos, lots of helpful tips and tricks.

    I just cleaned my EGR pipe, valve, and manifold yesterday. it was a pain in the ass for me and seems to have worked for me for now, but watching you remove the valve without removing the exhaust port behind it baffles me completely. That shit it a pain in the ass removing the studs.

    I followed the diagnostic process for the EGR you outlined and turns out the head gasket needed to be replaced. I had the dealer complete the head gasket job and now it is running well. I personally changed the EGR, Intake, EGR cooler, plugs, and coils. The dealer also attempted to swap my motor for a used motor which I declined because the replacement motor had 100K miles on it and I wasn't too comfortable about that, plus it was extremely expensive.     I'm diy mostly on my 2014 ct200h Lexus, fancy prius lol. So when I found out about EGR issue i was thinking maybe beyond my skill level. but after watching some of your videos and other diy videos. i felt confident to work on and it really helped me so much. although i did not replace egr valve or intake manifold. I did a good cleaning of entire system, and replace most of the gaskets, the pcv, engine coolant. btw this was preventative work or maintenance not repairing. but thanks for providing these videos, very helpful.

      Did you go to the dealership for the TSB and update the EGR software? You cleaning it only fixed the symptoms, but not the cause of illness.

    Ya this is the type of video I like to see. You know the type of vehicle cause you work on them. How to diagnose, what to look for, tips and shortcuts along the way, updated new parts AND any different installation changes. Oh ya, that happens too! Software updates and of course the road test and what to expect during the drive.
    When I worked at the L.A. Dept of Water & Power we had lots of "F" Series Ford Trucks and I learned a lot! Mostly I delt with F150 through F550.
    So. Keep the diagnostic/repair videos coming! And if you're doing a diagnostic/repair and/or a TSB or a recall on a 2020 non hybrid RAV4, you'll DEFINITELY have my attention!
    Later this year I plan on doing coolant, transaxle fluid and brake fluid changes. Any tips or cautions on these will be much appreciated!

    I know someone with an 09 corolla with this issue. Car would rough idle, stall at stop signs, and vibrate. They spent 2000 dollars trying to self diagnose, and local mechanics, just to find out after replacing everything from catalytic converter to a MAF sensor to spark plugs to intake manifold gasket to 02 sensors to fuel pump. Crazy that even the Toyota dealership didn't catch it.
    I love to see you talking about older Yotas. My Scion xA is a 2005 and my Tacoma is an 04. I'm very glad you are not ashamed or afraid to express your Christian beliefs. I respect that greatly. Thanks again for another awesome video.

    I clean the throttle body along with the EGR valve every 30k miles. Lexus 2015 GX460. The EGR is typically more dirty then the throttle body in my experience. Much easier to clean then to shell out $$ for a new one from lack of cleaning.

    Remember to read and complete ALL the Toyota Service Bulletin steps to the very last one. Skip none. Check them off as you go, & initial/date the hardcopy. Done.

    I take my 98 Corolla to my local Toyota Dealer to do the jobs I can’t do as a home mechanic. Here in Australia just north of Brisbane. I used to shop around, but the independent mechanics were more expensive by a long way than the dealer. To be honest the customer service at the dealer is way better than the independents I have used in the past.

    Hey, I just want to chime in about my (seemingly) sucess with 2013 Lexus CT 200h. I had watched several other videos that more or less said "Clean the egr system and the cooler." I spent about 2 hours spraying all kinds of chemicals into the cooler, the same for the egr. Put it all back together and it ran *worse* in some ways.
    I didn't drive it anywhere, just had put it into maintenaince mode to begin burping the coolant system. Pre-cleaning of the egr, I was having cylinder 1 misfires. It was the worse on cold start ups, and would happen periodically while driving at lower speeds (15-35mph I'd say). Post-cleaning of the EGR, the engine was surging struggling to get enough air it seemed like.
    I took the advice of this video, bit the bullet and bought a new egr valve from Napa for about 270$ (they had a sitewide sale!). Installed it, and now the car runs normal again! Let it run for about 20 minutes while burping the system, took it out for a test drive and it ran wonderfully! (Though the temperature light did come on, we will see if that's because I left it running so long in maintenaince mode.)
    I'll be doing another round of burping in the morning, and then driving it around town to really verify everything is okay!
    Unfortunately, quite a few nuts and bolts were lost in the process 😅 But that's a simple problem to fix in the future! Thank you so much for your video! It gave me the confidence to go ahead and just drop the money and replace the egr. Bonus is it has a 3 year warranty! So if it fails I should get another one :D

    Thanks for this video. I bring my Toyota to the dealer. Hope they know about these issues when they start occur. I had so many wrong diagnoses on cars. Spending thousands over a few years. Got sick of it and bought a dealer maintained Toyota Auris hybrid from 2014.. really hope they wont pull their hands off when it starts getting a little complex like my previous cars….

    Love this video! As a dealership mechanic, I get all the young "recently certified": techs to work with me for a few weeks. Most are so anxious to just start replacing parts when it's very obvious that it appears faulty. I tell them no, we are going to look at everything else related before we start replacing parts. They always ask "Why?". I tell them "How would you feel if you brought your $60K truck to the dealership with a problem and it wasn't fixed right the first time?" In my experience, and probably yours too, most would rather pay a bit more and wait a bit longer to have it done right the first time.

      Callbacks are demoralizing for everybody involved. Everybody ends up with some but the best end up with the fewest. I don't remember everything I fixed but I remember everything that came back on me. (Electronics, but same thing.)

      @@flagmichael I've had a few in my 40+ years, but one still haunts to this day. I had a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid in the bay that would go into limp mode. The car only had 489 miles on it and the customer was very upset. The problem was intermittent so we only had a limited amount of time to diagnose when it acted up. We went thru every single hybrid part, module, pin connector and it would not yield it secret. After a little over a month, multiple Ford engineer visits, and a customer who threated legal action against the dealer the car was bought back under the lemon law.

    Thanks for the nice presentation; a reminder that the Prius is not a DIY project car like the old 1995 Camry is. Cars will never get simpler as we go forward, so I hold on to my old Camry with white knuckles.

    For someone that would do this DIY, do you think replacing the intake and egr valve is something that could be learned and done with the right tools on your own? And if so how would somebody who successfully replaced them do the software update? Is the software update something that has to be done every time these parts are disconnected?

    Hi AMD , great video I must say it is good to know the right way to diagnose problems and do the right repair for the first time all the time , but with the function of the EGR is not just for circulation , based on my knowledge the exhaust gas actually dilute combustion temp to so that more complete burning takes place in each cylinder.
    I think 🤔 you'll agree with me on that.

    Much respect, these eco-friendly cars have become so complex, and every little part is squeezed into a small space usually intended for easy assembly rather than easy maintenance. I am so glad when I used to do more than tinker with cars, sometimes maybe 3 full services in a weekend, you could almost climb inside the engine bay. No computer diagnosis, you had to know if a capacitor was going by the colour of the points spark etc. I could tune a branch manifold with 4 individual strombergs with a length of 1/2 inch pipe, and then put a flow meter on it and it was spot on. But man, the cockamamy stuff you dealing with. Almost stripping half the car to get at one piece. Sheesh.

    Don’t you wish we could really do it this fast. LOL. I wanted to comment on one of the things you mentioned about non-dealer technicians. I spend a lot of time working on Mercedes sprinters, but I also work on Chevrolet, Ford, Isuzu and Nissan. Let’s not forget I also have a Yale forklift I have to maintain. There is a lot to remember and know from one model to the other. I actually know more on the Mercedes Sprinter than our local dealership. You learn by trial and error many times. Great video as always. Well I gotta get back to wrenching!!!

    in 1991 I purchased a new Camry 4cyl. Right out of the gate it stumbled at a part throttle shift. I took it back with less than 100 miles. The dealership ran several full throttle test drives and determined there was nothing wrong. After having it for a month they installed a damper in the EGR vacuum line (TSB for the EGR stumble) and it offered no improvement. The car would run fine on heavy acceleration but under moderate acceleration it would stumble and downshift. I took it upon myself to test by blocking the vacuum line and it ran perfectly for the next 260,000 miles. It also burned oil from the first mile but that is another story. I was determined that I would never buy another Toyota product, but then in 2003, I test drove a Camry XLE against a Honda Accord. Unfortunately, this car had a steering problem (strut mount installed backward) that the dealer was unable to diagnose until months later when a Toyota troubleshooter responded with a TSB. Toyota has come a long, long way since 1991! I still have the 03 and it drives like the day it was new.
