I have a Lexus CT, which is the same engine system as Prius. I was depressed with the engine vibration for the last couple of years. I brought the car to multiple dealers, and they replaced plugs, battery, tires, etc, charging me many $k. Then I found this video. I followed the instructions, and the vibration is gone. Just did it on my 2010 Prius (150K+ miles). A few notes:
    1. There's no real need to unclip the plastic bracket, just move it out of the way.
    2. Absolutely no need for a bronze brush and the drill. Blast that pipe with throttle body / carb cleaner, and it's shiny as new.
    3. Wrap a piece of lint free cloth on a stick and saturate it with carb cleaner. Wipe the corresponding manifold & valve holes with it, rinsing with a stream of carb cleaner after each insertion. Basically same technique as removing the ear wax: don't push it in )

  • @hitchensthinksnot4778
    @hitchensthinksnot4778 Před 8 lety +23

Unfortunately, that won't clear a P0401 code, in most cases. However, it is helpful to clean the pipe out. Here's what I did to correct the restricted flow problem.
When you pull he plastic cover off of the top of the engine, you'll see the round (nipple-like) cover to the EGR solenoid. Remove the two Phillips head screws and pull the cover off, no need to disconnect the wiring harness. Unscrew the cylindrical magnet with the bearing on top. The shaft will be exposed. If you put a washer over the shaft, just covering the round disk, then screw the magnet back on, this increases the throw of the plunger, and restores the flow.
If you look inside the cover, you'll see a small plastic ridge, it's covered with grease. Look closely and you'll see that it's worn down and not letting the valve open like it should, or used to. This is what fixed mine, and I just wanted to save headaches for others.
It will take three run cycles to clear the code. You just saved some cash...HAPPY DANCE ! ! !

Tips to PREVENT HEAD GASKET FAILURE:
231K - 2013 Prius. Just had head gasket replaced for $1,500.
Could of prevented it if I cleaned/replaced EGR cooler around my second run of 80K or 90K miles?
Maybe it happened to me a bit sooner because I cleaned my EGR cooler out about 90% +\- at 130k miles, + 1000 miles/week, 50K/yr. and maybe because of potentially more cold/heat cycles on the head gasket.
Lots of people highly recommend 3rd gen prius owners clean or replace EGR cooler AT or BEFORE you hit every 100K miles.
EGR cooler $178 new on ebay, $300 at toyota, part 25601-37010. Clean EGR pipe and valve with the intake manifold/throttle body. Replace PCV valve, optional oil catch can.
    X
At 230K miles my EGR cooler was completely blocked up with soot (previous cleaning at 130K). My symptoms were brief misfire on #2 couple times every 100 miles and slow engine coolant leak into the engine. #2 spark plug and #2 set of 4 valves were pretty dirty. Head gasket and cylinder head was replaced with refurbished one. (6,000/3month
warranty). Car runs great so far. 4th Gen Prius has improved this problem.

Blame toyota I guess for not creating a better EGR flow system. goodbye 1500$ :-0 I knew of the problem before i bought the prius when researching and it still happened to me, i was even planning on cleaning it before it happened.
As I said in my first post it cost me 170$ on ebay but that is out of country and shipping time consider. search the part # or pay toyota $300 w/tax or clean the part very good and replace or buy the part and keep your old cooler to have it cleaned for the next 100k miles cleaning. clean cooler, pipe, valve, intake, replace pcv valve, i have not put an oil catch can in but that is optional and may help. So, you are not overcharge it. 3 line hoses also good to diagnose what the real problems, compressor, condenser, evaporator, or just low refrigreant. Just recharge it and do not use any oil unless it is ND11 (non-conductive oil). PAG oil for other cars will short your 110V AC compressor and destroy it.
