This is the best Spare review. I think you are the first reviewer to mention the gross depiction of Africa in his book and as someone who is Moroccan I can tell you it upset me beyond belief that he speaks of my continent in such a primitive manner.
thanks for watching miranda
I travelled to Morocco a few years ago. We stayed in agadir, it was so wonderful. Morocco is a great country and the people are so lovely. I absolutely loved it. It's sad harry speaks badly of the African continent, there are so many diverse and beautiful countries.
Love to you in Morocco from ireland đźđȘâ€ïž
@@theswiftologist OHHHH the white privilege blinds people to a point you cannot see even the obvious! THANK GOD there is the concept for "place of speaking." You are totally blind, honey boo! Don't judge and can understand it is because you speak from a palce privilege and judges meghan and harry narrative only by what you perceive as prejudice, not getting that his story is out there because his wife was the main target to racist bigotry - as their first kid, Archie. The rest comes along with it. Interesting how you botter with the "fantasy" in his speaking about Ăfrica, but quote's that "THERE MUST BE SOME TRUTH TO THEIR COMPLAINS ABOUT RACISM, BUT..." lol. You don't 1% of it, for sure. "but..." what else do you need after the first sentence? I'm from a third world country. The fantasy he uses to describe Africa is common when we meet "the different" place and part of the experience. I cannot feel any discomfort with that, but i sure feel something in mu stomach while seeing how episodes of racist bigotry against Meghan are ignored and talked about as less important than they really are. Your concern is twisted because you have no idea how racism feels like and the level of damage it really causes. Your concern is pointed to the fantasy portrait Harry had of Africa. Lol... fabricated conscience. Try more and try again! And...anti monarchist while trying to defend the future king by using different measures to judge him and the spare?. Lol. Our rooths really stick to us, don't they? Not so anti monarchist, perhaps. How can we ask for BLIND LOYALTY from Harry when the agreement between royal rota and royals is what made him the focus of bad press to begin with? Did you understand the key point, that "nevralgico" point in all this? Harry was trade as commodity to build William's good image while they were growing up! If you were put under that unfair agreement, i bet you would not give a single bad f*ck about it. Imagine when it starts happening yo your wife! When her image is a trade to hide William's naughty behavior (the blind ones can look for articles KIND OF touching Hanbury's topic since 2013!! All of them edited to erase Roses part of deleted, FUNNY ENOUGHT; use "time back machine" app). Imagine that is a possibility even to your newborn son in the near future! How NOT TO BE furious? He was polite compared with the agression received! 2) again, one more time: did you hear yourself? "Yeah, there must be some truth in the acusations of racism, BUT..." lol why BUT? What you need beyond that? What matters beyond the fact that there was racism and NOT acknowledgement of it from the royals or from the press? They are denying to this day!
Oh hey fellow Moroccan đ„° Post-colonialism is unfortunately a thing. There's something in these ytes' blood, not all of them, I swear.. The blatant entitlement and condescension are gross.

Itâs odd that as an adult Harry canât have any sympathy for William. Sure, Harry is the âspareâ and William is more important than him in this structure, but Harry fails to admit theyâve both suffered under that structure because itâs a corrupt and stupid one. It seems Harry canât get past the childish mentality of âmy brother is meanâ and fully direct his rage toward the system that created that dynamic. Theyâre BOTH pawns
yeah he only wants to be the aggrieved party
They are both pawns, but the less privileged donât have a responsibility to the more privileged within the structure. His responsibility is to the less privileged.
Is Harry has really royal blood if is so why he married a low class yacht girl with lots of skeleton in her closet?
@@rrodz1447 honestly? Cry me a river. I really donât care about the monarchy, like genuinely want it to be destroyed. So the tone harry has is not of a mature father of two but comes of as spoilt brat⊠I am sure William too is a spoilt brat and probably a bigger asshole⊠but I just donât have it in me to give shit about how less privileged harry is compared to his brother when he is extremely privileged too. He sounds like someone who wants the position William is in. And in the year 2023, I canât conjure any sympathy for that. Destroy the monarchy and end this drama.
Also, I don't wanna bring in a fictional world into this (already doing, because although I know there real life examples, I don't recall them by heart đ ), BUT đ
There are two types of royal families: the Lannisters and the Tyrells; this family clearly is physically incapable of behaving like the Tyrells, because none of them can take on secondary rolls, none of them can work supporting the ones occupying the central line; every and single one of them is programmed in their genes, almost brainwashed, to behave as a lion, to be the only absolute monarch imposing their world view on the very world they rule; even when they *want* to abide by higher values, they're just almost comically blind to how to do it. It's very.... Urgh... Pitiful? I don't know...
Bragging about killing people in the military is pretty rare at least from my experience, alot of soldiers are really touchy about that subject. My dad would always say he never killed anyone in Afghanistan even though he almost certainly did. Also the fact that he knows it was 25. Like was he keeping score? So weird
Yeah the way he writes about it is really frank and idk if thatâs because he was trying to be super candid or if its because he is indeed desensitized to a horrifying degree lol
I just donât know how someone could be a member of the royal family, visit the African continent, wax poetic about the suffering, and not go back to the palace and burn it to the ground. How does one not connect those dots?
Pretty sure they go to Africa and think 'aw that's sad, if we had kept helping them they would be fine today, but nope, they had to have independence and now look at this mess' not knowing that 'helping' them was what created this mess' in the fucking first place

I love your analysis of this! Harryâs lack of accountability and self awareness of it all is the most jarring takeaway. The Netflix docu-series is hard to watch for me for the same reasons despite the love story put in to distract us. This book is such a missed opportunity in exploring somewhat relatable family dynamics & experiences (your family not liking your spouse, the trauma of losing a family member so young, the younger vs older brother competition, lack of nurturing received as a child), but instead was used essentially as a burn book against William and the press.
Well said!
One of the most sad things about all this, which I donât see anywhere near enough people pointing out, is the way the seeds are already being sown for these same dynamics to play out in the next generation with Will and Kateâs kids. Even though the children are meant to be off limits, so many stories I see paint George as the kingly heir, Charlotte as bossy and Louis as the rascal/comic relief. Louis will surely have a similar identity crisis as Harry did as a young man and Charlotte is being perfectly set up to be pit against the girlfriends and wives of her brothers. It just makes me sad to see how no one learns, nothing changes.
THIS! Everyone is focusing on tabloids salacious headlines and âteaâ
And all Harry is trying to point out is, stop this cycle of abuse. Stop this generational cycle of putting kids born not in the âcorrectâ order as disposable trash.
Heâs crying to be acknowledged as a human being.
But all anyone can say, âwell your rich!â đ
You're spot on. These poor children...
Hopefully Kate mitigated some of that⊠hopefully she can make it through for the kids
The book cover will haunt me for life he's literally staring into my soul
well he's a ginger I didn't even get to that in this video. strike one from birth
my conclusion about the whole royal drama is that 1. yes, harry and most especially meghan did have a mentally traumatic experience and 2. they are unlikable, a bit self aggrandising, unwilling to âculturallyâ compromise/adapt and set on doing things their own way (aka the hugging, lack of prep for the etiquette, etc) - both of which are true and need to be simultaneously acknowledged in a discussion about the whole mess. I think that the public tends to withhold empathy from imperfect victims who donât handle their troubles âgracefullyâ which i think is a bit of an unfair expectation. I think what I find most off putting about Harry and meghanâs handling of this is them repeatedly airing out the familyâs dirty laundry in such a public manner in a way that is very unbalanced and lacking empathy for any other member involved but them. Having such an emotionally immature reaction is perhaps understandable, but milking it publicly at the expense of the familyâs intimacy is less so, especially coming from someone who has spent their entire life obsessing over finding a way to escape what he is now actively putting his family through.
At the end, Prince Harry has become so obsessed by correcting the publicâs perception of him that he 1. fails to afford the same grace to his family, 2. fails miserably in correcting said perception by his inability to view his flaws and lack of charisma and 3. fails to profit from the chance to lay low and try to put the fire out.
Also, from their documentary - I fail to understand why we - the public - ought to be sad that this colonialist empire has failed to properly use a biracial woman to preserve the commonwealth. Sure, wouldâve been a good pr move, but trying to paint that cause as sympathetic speaks loudly. In both Harry and meghanâs cases, their supremely overdone emphasis on how good they are, how much they are changing the world, how angelic their motives are - it comes off very self centered and less about the causes (though I am sure they have good intentions), about actually doing good things than placing themselves at the center of the narrative - itâs not about changing something, itâs about them.
Yes to your last point!!!!!! Trying to use a biracial woman to preserve the commonwealth/the monarchy is actually an insane, borderline offensive goal to have in the first place
So well put! đđ
Maria M. that was an excellent assessment. A fun fact that many people are not aware of is that Meghan is not the first bi racial royal. Princess Angela of Lichtenstein has been a princess since 2000. There are at least 2 or 3 more. The problem is definitely not racism in their case.
You forgot that they aired their dirty laundries... because Meghan's family were weaponize to talk badly about Meghan in the first place
How is Harry suppose to lay low to put out a fire đ„ of a 1200 year old archaic racist institution. He can't make his family change, they have to want to change. Harry is not perfect or blame free by any means here but that family has significant issues and the treatment of Harry but particularly of Meghan tells me they have not learned a thing from Princess Diana situation. I was around for that and OMG đźđŻ they failed her miserably as they did Harry. Take a look of all the other Royal monarchies in Europe đȘđș, the British Royal Family seemed to be the only monarchy that operates that way and are behind the times.
Thoughtful, not sensationalist, yet accessible - appreciate this layered, critical summary.

zach, literally the biggest props to you⊠i donât know if anyone else couldâve made me sit down to watch (and enjoy) an hour long video about Prince Harry
Hahah thank you for watching!!
Harry is not the only one whose mother died. What about William, at such a young age he also lost his mother and had to look out for his younger brother his whole life. Whereâs sympathy for him?! Losing his mom, he and his mom were so close that she would confide in him and tell him private things as her confidant. Not Harry, his older brother was there for him and put him in therapy.
I think Harry needed lots of therapy from a very young age due to his parentsâ relationship and of course his motherâs tragic death. I also think he shouldâve been sent to a less demanding school than Eton if it was fairly obvious that he would be a soldier when he grew up as opposed to a scholar.
Lack of love is clearly the enduring and original sin of this family
"these people are stupid" lmaooooo I remember the first time I went to London I took a "royals" walking tour (bc it was free) and I was 18 and really knew nothing about the royals or the monarchy and I remember the primary thought I had after the tour was "these people are petty and crazy" lol. Zach, how is it that you are so awesome in analyzing every story / topic? I thought you are just an amazing âSwiftologistâ, but you are just awesome and so thoughtful in any topic!
i think only a british person can understand the role the royal family plays, and others may not be able to understand but itâs such a cultural titan within our country that i never see it being dissolved, itâs imbedded into so many facets of our lives from the currency to head of state to the parliamentary system itself. and considering will and kate are still largely popular in the uk i donât think the monarchy will be dismantled in our life times atleast, purely as a result of apathy rather than monarchist fervour.
I do have a uk passport so âŠ.. I feel emboldened in my opinions âŠ. But I totally agree it will be slowly dismantled over time and decline in relevance, based on apathy. There just isnât a large anti monarchy sentiment in the UK
I personally think the US would benefit from a non-political leader with the goal to unite the country. I think the royals do have a lot of benefits, despite being imperfect.

Re: Harry and Meghan, i am mostly on their side but I definitely agree there is big lack of self-awareness. Airing your familyâs dirty laundry and making the press hungry for insider info on them seems⊠not wise. Especially when he has spoken so much about how the press ruined his family.
That said, I am absolutely on board with them stepping out of the royal family and I believe Harry is holding a lot of trauma, which I donât blame him for. I canât imagine grieving a parent at that age in front of the whole world, or knowing all my life that my only purpose in my familyâs eyes was to step in if my brother died before he could have kids.
And re: Will, heâs caught in the trap too and youâre right, Harry will never understand the pressure on him just like he will never understand how Harry feels. They are both caught in a fucked up system and I feel bad for both of them for different reasons.
TLDR, I agree wholeheartedly with what Harry and Meghan are doing, but kinda wish theyâd do it a little more silently and gracefully and just focus on them and not what they walked away from.

Do you think it's possible for anyone raised within British royalty to see Africa through a non-colonial lense?
I see it similarly to their views on "work".
That argument between Harry and William about who gets Africa blew my mind. I feel like it's confirmation that the ghost writer wanted the word count. And the editor either didn't recognize the problem or just wanted us to see it, in a "can you believe this ish?" Way.

Oh no! We definitely need Spare (From The Vault Pages)
I actually don't agree that this book does a number on the monarchy. If anything, it makes the other members of the royal family (the king and queen, William and Kate especially) more sympathetic and they will benefit from this in the end. I guess it comes down from our different view on the monarchy đ. With that saud, I really loved your review!
I think this is a good, balanced review.
I was probably less frustrated by this book than you are because my expectations were low and I figured there would be a lot of rambling about stuff I didn't care about. I was listening to it in a bit of a fog while sick, and it's something easy to half pay attention to.
The colonizer attitude -- he's been raised pretty hard in that. I don't doubt that he heard that stuff a lot and that it was never really challenged. However, yeah, it should be "I didn't mean to hurt anyone, I'm so sorry, I want to really put effort into being less racist" rather than "I don't want people to think I'm racist." I mean, he was raised in an institution where the baseline is that God chose them to have this power and privilege. And the sort of childhood trauma he experienced leading to narcissism is not surprising.
Are he and Meghan sympathetic victims for me? No, and they have big blind spots. However, it is also true that they suffered mistreatment within the family, I think. Given how unhappy Harry has been in the institution since he was 12 if not before, I do them leaving was for the best. I do also think he should still have security for longer -- our former presidents etc do get security details, I don't doubt the risk level to be high for them, and footing that expense when you're newly out seems like a lot.
I think this book doesn't intend to bring down the institution on Harry's part, but to control the narrative in a situation where the person trying to do so is obviously eaten up by the ideas of the falsehoods and even admittedly has memory issues. I take Harry as an unreliable narrator for the specifics.
As for his not preparing girlfriends for what they were going to face, it's clear that what he found most attractive about them was that they were unfettered by the rules he was supposed to be living by. So...yeah, he would be reluctant to help them prepare adequately because it would ruin the illusion for him.
I was actually amazed that he got so close on issues like what sorts of people the military wants, that he realized at least a little that he needed to slip into dehumanizing people to do that job, that he has the start of questioning the basic mission of the monarchy in there -- all of that is more progress than I expected from the guy. Maybe, given more time and therapy, he'll get farther on these issues. I don't know that they'll ever run in the sort of circles that will give him the smack up the head he needs for perspective.
So... some interesting bits sprinkled in there, somewhat informative big strokes, lots of stuff meant to deal with tabloid issues I don't care about.
*This is gold! Thank you!*

I agree I think itâs a bit messy of him to spill everything. Thereâs so much resentment with his brother. I think Harry internalized his brothers teenage actions again bc the grief + not being able to express and deal with emotions + the system. Itâs just a lot for him.
That being said heâs so privileged and it shows and those out of touch sides donât make him look good. And I think bc of the very hard things he went through which i agree was very hard it caused him to see himself as a perpetual victim. My childhood was a bit messy not as bad as his but I see that within my siblings, some people go through shit and see themselves as a victim which in that situation they are but they never get out of that mindset, they become a victim infinitely
MM was a full time live-in girlfriend in 2017 at Nottingham cottage on palace grounds. She was exposed to the family and royal life on a daily basis. She was NOT unprepared. Had she been a good student, she wouldâve picked up much.
Zach influences all my opinions I simply cannot think for myself anymore
Thank you for your fair and balanced review. I honestly shocked at the Africa passages and even his lack of acknowledgement that he is dating the descendant of a former slave. It shows that he still has a lot to go, even if he has to be dragged kicking and screaming into that journey. The passage that revealed that Meghan basically served as his sugar mama is especially funny to me. I literally have to put the book down and laugh.
The colonialist undertones are actually just overtones lol
@@theswiftologist But you do have to give it to him that no matter how callous and colonial he is about Africa in his writings, he actually give a shit about the people unlike William who reduced Africa to actual animals.
@@toannguyen1998 Yeah, he's ignorant but sentimental, Will doesn't give a F. đ
Mehgan is accountable for her own actions. She knew what she was stepping into. She knew I believe she had no intentions of conforming to the RF. Harry is accountable also. He knew the consequences. I think he did not foresee it going this far ...
he also admits they wanted to leave before they even got married so they just found a reason to leave and not be accountable, if they tall enough they tell us everything
didn't think i'd ever watch a 1-hour review and summary of a royal's book but only zach can make me do that
Zach the King đ himself
Is anti-monarchy
u know it
an hour long video talking about the red headâs book, Iâm scared!
buckle in
This video was such interesting commentary. Really appreciate that I genuinely feel like I now have a decent grasp on what the book entails without the bother of reading it. đ Definitely sounds as though some of the sections would have made for painful reading.
To take Harryâs (and the Royal familyâs) criticism of the press one step further, Iâm wondering to what extent the public who delight in consuming salacious tabloid gossip are to blame for this whole mess? There seems to be a mental disconnect in the way people who closely follow royal news seem to think they have a classy hobby/interest, but in reality, being a âroyalistâ isnât functionally different to obsessing over the Kardashians in this day and age. Or am I being too harsh?
Very good video. Thank you for breaking this down. Can't wait for me stuff.
Would you ever consider doing a dive into the music that influenced albums like red etc from that time for those of us that werenât there lol
Like you posted about about poison and wine being a influence on Twitter
Loved your analysis đ
We may not agree in some of our taylor swift opinions, but I'm glad we agree that the crown should burn đŻ
me finding this video after watching about 30 of your TS videos: I guess you could say... their Castle's crumbling?
We must protect Zach at all costs for giving us so much analytic content he does and the thought he puts in his work
Hi I haven't finished the video yet but how do you feel about his language about women? it really disturbed me how they are either good heavenly angelic like his mom or bad vile and villainous
finally someone mentions this. It was really disturbing to read
Good and balanced review, but I disagree in the monarchy ending anytime soon. I'm very cautious of this perspective as an American due to our history with Britain and know that a majority of those in Britain and some in the commonwealth don't share that opinion. This anti-monarchy stance is more American than anything else.
I agree, I am British and I'm constantly amazed at how many Americans say the monarchy needs to go? You guys fought a war to become independent and so why would the US care? There is no way the monarchy is going, its survived so much over a thousand years.
So true. For me as a non brit it's baffling how many Americans don't understand what role constitutional monarchy plays. It's like asking for dissolving of American Presidency system. Considering that Americans have invaded other countries I would love to se it fall.
thank you for this â€
Thank you for your review! Such a deep and interesting review! I would like to hear your opinion on Tom Bowers book "Revenge" Because there two different sides to these stories (it's like royals side of story). It would be really interesting!
I would love to see you, as a journalist, make a video of the 13 questions you would ask Taylor if you were guaranteed 100% honest and complete answers
oooooh.....
this video is so good
The part where you said the royals can't respond to harry isn't, entirely true because they do respond they just don't go on the record so they use royal sources and royal correspondent. They take them to lunch they even have Christmas parties for the royal correspondents.
ya I said that multiple times - I mean they can't respond directly with their own words. communicating through 'sources' is not the same as giving interviews and writing a tell all book
I hated how he made it seem like he was preyed on by an older woman to whom he lost his virginity, when in reality it was a 19 y/o girl he had been messing for a while.
Edit: spelling
You're Irish? Subscribed! (great video btw)
The use of the poem Invictus makes me furious!
watching this after hearing the celebrity memoir bookclub podcast dissection. i think they mentioned it was obviously written by him beause of how bad the writin was? lol. i laughed when hearing about the ghost writer. this work is truly one of the most bizarre memoirs of all time and destroyed my image of him beyond recognition lmfao, like, this was the worst massive hit piece of all time against him, no contest. he surrounds himself with people who support racism, military propaganda, insane levels of wealth inequality, etc. then claims he "didnt know better" to excuse every harmful act. he clearly hasnt seen a single half decent therapy session pre-wife and im so glad she talked sense into him. his view of his own life reads as like, Main Character who unselfawarely cant comprehend that hes actually not a protagonist.
the quality of your videos is unmatched. i couldnât care less about the royal family, but i will be watching the whole thing.
Thank you so much for watching!!
Right outta the gate here, but im already impressed with your poignant and articulate commentary.
Any thoughts on Travis Kelceâs WSJ profile being written by Harryâs ghost writer ?
