I've been doing a lot of personal "research" on the nata, and I am right there with you when it comes to what makes a great one. It's one of those things that's either done well (flaky not chewy), and is like pastry from the gods, or it's absolutely forgettable. (Freshness is key as well).

As a portuguese immigrant in the UK, I must say this video hits home, those restaurantes might be in the US, far from Portugal but they are very traditional, the food, the ingredients, the way it's presented it's the real deal. Often in the UK or other countries we see portuguese restaurants that for example don't serve the flaming chorizo on fire, they serve it already cut in a plate. A big fluke is here in the UK, the peri peri sauce is mostly served like a creamy sauce, almost like sriracha or something, but you guys showed the REAL DEAL, it's basically a chili spicy oil with some moonshine mixed in. Amazing work for keeping it REAL!

So much of the world was influenced by Portuguese age of discovery and you still can see that today in the countries that were colonies or had trade relationships with Portugal. Tempura in Japan and Vindaloo in India are 2 of the biggest exemple. It's fascinating to see how much Portuguese and Asian cuisines have in common. Even languages like Malaysia, Thai and some Indian languages/dialects have words that come from Portuguese. Even English words like, comando, marmelade, cobra and others are from direct Portuguese influence. The 5 o'clock tea in the UK started with the Portuguese princess Catarina de Bragança marrying into the English crown. Portuguese influenced the whole world but it's now forgotten. I think it would be wise to world leaders to learn about the history of Portugal and how even the biggest empires can fall into oblivion.

@@dinismantas7265 if you are going that route, you can say that the Portuguese empire only official ended in 1999 when Macau was given back to China administration (whatever weird system they have). There are still Portuguese people native to Macau. Fun fact: there is a translator degree for portuguese/Chinese that is 1st year in Portugal, 2 year is in Beijing, 3rd year in Macau and 4th back in Portugal, Chinese students do 2nd & 3rd year in Portugal. The empire ended but the connection between the countries is still strong today.

    • @dinismantas7265

@@LadyNikitaShark Maybe, but one could also argue that the relevance of Bizantium/Istanbul is not comparable to Macau. Constantin still retained the title of Emperor, if memory doesn't fail me.
Even if we do not want to take into consideration the very isolated Bizantium, at what point did it cease to be relevant? At 900 year mark? 800 years? Do we just consider the Roman Empire relevant up until the separation of the West and the East? In any case, it was freaking long standing Empire.

    • @LadyNikitaShark

That food looked incredible, just like how it's served here in portugal too. Props to joey for being such a good host, he definitely showed you guys how traditional portuguese food is supposed to look and be enjoyed. Portuguese food deserves so much more attention than it gets, glad you guys had a great experience. Come to portugal anytime, everybody is welcomed :)
