This is probably a stupid question but can I give a Venus fly trap normal water from the store
@@Happyfacee763no
i just recently finally bought my first venus flytrap n im so hyped, they're such an elegant plant
Still alive ?
They and saracenia are extremely hardy.
They are best to be outside in sunny spot, they also have to go threw dormancy every year.
Water them with rain or de ionised water only, in winter they shouldn't be sitting in lots of water as it will cause root rot.
I brought a shit load of pitcher plants off ebay cheap 2 half years ago, lost some due to slugs i think as they bury into soil and eat the roots at winter time.
Get some saracenias, they are amazing, go for red and white variety's.
Another interesting fact is pitcher plants glow in ultraviolet light which attracts many insects so they are feeding 24 hours a day!!!!
@@auntonera1xtattoo I only got into carnivorous plants 3 year ago, they are really hardy plants if you know the basics, they will look after themselves hassle free
Thank you for your support I just got my venous fly trap yesterday
Woo hoo! Good luck!
1st time I've ever heard to water them like that, thank you for caring about vft! 🙂
Of course!
Thank you. I have had pitcher plants and a few different kinds of venus fly traps, always loved carnivorous plants and yes the level of care is definitely above basic or what is usually mentioned.
They really are amazing! Care isn't difficult, just different.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHubcan I use a aquarium water conditioner to get rid of the chlorine and stuff from the water since I don’t got a osmosis system or a lot of rain
Wow I didn't know I had to let it dry out tysm
This is great thanks 🙏🏾
i just bought my first venus flytrap yesterday and have been doing so much research for it, so thanks for this video! ive heard a bunch of conflicting things about vft dormancy. anyone have any tips?
Also most other carnivorous plants are damaged by tap water due to the soil they grow in lacking nutrients.
100% accurate!!
Will spring water work
Will bottled spring water be ok
I can't say with certainty without measuring with a tds meter. Sometimes minerals are added to spring water for flavor.
I also recommend mixing long fibered spagnehem moss into your peat moss to help it absorb more water and it will eventually break down into peat and keeping a layer of spagnehem moss on top to help protect your plants from heat damage if you have them outside but moment temperature get above 90F bring them inside because if it gets too hot the plant will burn
The long fiber sphagnum moss is a great tip! However, i had my flytraos outside when we had a heat wave with a high of 109 degrees F, as long as they are acclimated in spring, they will be fine in 90 degree f plus. Just have to keep that tray full!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I live in Texas and I bought my traps in the fall then when it came to the summer time they started to burn but it's probably due to the afternoon sun, which most of my plants besides my Snake Plant and Madagascar Palm are the only ones that can handle it. My nepenthes gaya is also outside but only gets morning and early noon sun while in a 10 gallon tank 😂 after sealing 90% off screen lid it's pitchers are doing well.
Oh ya! Neps are way more sensitive to the sun. I had a huge beautiful ventrata burn really bad a couple years ago. It's recovered now but I almost lost it.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub the mother plant died off a bit ago but thanks to it having 3 pups I still have it and since I duck taped plastic bag to the screen lid to trap moisture but leaving enough space to allow fresh air flow, it's now thriving and the moss is as well
How often do you bottom water them them and how do you know how much water to give them?
The answer to that is not black and white. How much and how often depends on temperatures and size of the pot. The hotter it is the more often I fill up the tray. The cooler it gets the longer I'll let the plant sit with an empty tray. A bigger planter can take on more water with less risk of crown rot. Check out my channel, I have a full length video going over watering. It will give you more specific details. czcams.com/video/9M5JHPIMrgk/video.html
im so lucky for being near a huge lake thats made only out of rainwater only rainwater i rescued mine it looked so unhealthy fron the store one was even deformed wich allows its food to escape but im making them big and strong now
How long do you leave the pot sitting in the tray of water?
I am trying to grow mine and it's been the same size for a year. I live in the state of Washington where it gets quite cold, what should I do? It's currently in its plastic housing that generates its own Greenhouse
Vft are native to north Carolina and cold hardy. They need a dormancy period each year (yes, even if indoors). Have you been skipping it?
We call that the "Death Cube". The plastic they market and sell them in is horrible for the Fly Trap! Take it out, they need air and sunlight. The plastic only inhibits this.
Flytraps do best outside and in a pot probably at least 5 inches deep or maybe a bit more. Of course in Washington leaving them outside often may not be an option
@j.shorter4716 I watched a video... maybe the same channel... where their VFT were covered in snow. Survived just fine. But I have concerns about sub freezing for a week straight outdoors and what it would do to the roots. They wouldn't be able to absorb water if everything is frozen solid. I have a lot of outdoor plants in pots, and when I see the high Temps in the 20's, I'll put them all in the garage. Everything, even the roses. I know they will live, but I can see they don't like it. It's March and they are already growing like crazy because I put em inside during winters worst. Blueberries, small peach, and apple trees. Everything was in the garage once high Temps were in to 20's. They all seem to appreciate it. Winter is winter, but prolonged freezing can kill a lot of plants. Especially if they aren't deep rooted. Aka potted.
@@MikeG.666I’m in Alabama so not as cold but I’ve had mine freeze during the night and they are ok. If it got really cold (low 20s) I usually bring them in. I left some out all winter a couple years ago and they still seem like they haven’t recovered yet. They aren’t dead but it stunted their growth
I want to replant my venus fly trap, is there a specific soil Im supposed to get ?
Are plastic pots good ?
Another water to buy is Battery Water. AKA distilled water for Batteries.
That definitely works!
We take it out and touch it. Please answer the question.
I got the care sheet but I need help to get peat moss the sphagnum moss I have is not helping my sarracenia and fly traps
Joshua, big box stores and most nurseries sell pure peat moss. They do usually come in larger bricks though.
If you have a Lowe’s or Home Depot nearby
What about well water
Well water just depends. Same as any other water. If there are a lot of minerals in the ground water there, it will probably not work. You would need to test with a tds meter.
And if i have a water purifier, its good?
I would need to know more about the purifier. Common water filtration systems like Britta do not filter out all the dissolved solids. Something like a Zero water pitcher would.
can you use boiled water ?
What medium are you using?
Why isn’t filtered water good for carnivorous plants
I also want 1 plant how can I get
can we just boil the water or let it sit for a long time? 😮
No. Boiling does not get rid of minerals and salt, just bacteria.
Doesnt depend on the area of your tapwater is treated and has minerals?
Yes, 100%. Different areas have different minerals in the ground. Some places naturally lack them, some places are full of them. Best way to determine if your water is okay is to use a TDS meter.
I put tapwater. What do I do?
switch to distilled. you can buy gallons at most grocery stores.
Yes, switch to distilled. Flush 4 or 5 times to get rid of any dissolved solids the tap water may have left behind.
is your California Carnivores code good for 10% off anything off of their website? or just certain items?
Hey Kevin, as far as I know, the 10% off is good for anything. However, I've asked the question just to see if there are any restrictions. I'll share once I know for sure, but I think you're okay to use it on anything.
I love getting distilled water because it’s everywhere and it’s cheap. Some places are for Texas
HEB
Walmart
Aldi if it’s in your area
Kroger
Can I feed my Venus Fly trap roaches?
Just make sure they are a third the size of the trap.
When it rains they get completely wet, so I don’t think that matters. Just don’t bomb them with the water
It definitely matters. Rain is usually temporary, few days at most at a time. Whether or not it matters largely depends on your temperatures. The colder it gets the more likely your plant is to get crown rot. Some people don't have cold Temps, that's probably fine. But cold Temps breed rot if the plant is sitting in water. Spring and fall, are high risks of your not careful. I just lost one of my healthiest and biggest flytraps to rot, and I was being careful. 40s F at night and 80s F during the day..
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I agree it’s not ideal. I used to be obsessive about it but then I had two kids and most of my time to be obsessive was lost. I try to give them straight distilled water but lately it’s been a lot of spray and pray with the hose. So far so good, but I still give them a straight soaking of distilled once a week. Maybe that flushes out any minerals from my tap.
The flushing definitely helps!
My de-iyonized water 70ppm 😳
What about well water
It depends in your ground. Some well water has a high concentration of minerals.
