  • I rode the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, between August and October, 2023.
    It was an epic ride!
    I've been touring and bikepacking for many years, however this is my first attempt to document my ride on video. The purpose of this channel is not to monetize the content, but a place to post these videos so I can share them with family and friends as well as a keepsake to view in years ahead...and if anyone finds the content useful and/or entertaining, all the better!
    Should you decide to watch this video series, you'll see it's far from perfect, but it represents my experience on the GDMBR.
    Of course, comments and/or questions are welcome!
    Hope you enjoy the ride!

    Good job for day 1. Sure brought back so many memories as Kim and I and kids spent many a time playing in that area. The forest smell is unique. When you stopped at the river I did expect to see a bear lol. Good job.

    Thanks for video! Myself and a few retired buddies started in Roosville (MT border) July 2021, CAN was still closed due to Covid. Made it to Steamboat Springs, CO. This summer 2024, planning to ride south from Banff and see how it goes at 70 years old. I went super lightweight last time with a Ti hardtail and shocks, all frame bags, no luxuries. That sort of pushes one to ride farther each day to reach water or resupply. And that of course makes an older touring speed rider tired and worn out faster. This time I'll try a steel frame Rigid 29er mtn bike, Salsa Cowchipper drop bars, shorter and higher reach, racks front and rear with small Reveleate Nano panniers. I'll be slower on the rocky stuff and downhills, but able to carry more food and water at a steady pace. Will follow along as you post vids. Thanks again. ☮

      Hey Mike, glad to hear you're getting prepared to continue the next section of the GDMBR. Sounds like you learned a lot from the first section you did and your setup will be better tuned-in for the upcoming summer.
      Surprised you're going with a rigid ride this time...any particular reason why?
      Lots of rocky stuff for sure, but keep in mind the alternatives that are available...a couple of which I availed myself of on last summer's ride.
      Glad you're following along!
      Cheers!

      @@reinhartbigl367 Main reason for rigid frame and fork this time is to use racks and small panniers front and rear. I'm an old school road cycling tourist, and ex road cyclist. I figure I'll be slower downhill and on rocky terrain, BUT slightly faster on smoother terrain, uphill, and on roads. That trade-off I'm hoping will be more comfortable overall at about the same mileage per day. Even with a Jones H-Bar, level to seat, my old hands and wrists hurt on my Ti hardtail. I'm more comfy with neutral hand position on brake hoods and drops. Plus, I have learned that my La Cabra, by Black Mountain Cycles, all steel, rides more cushy than my Ti mtn bike when the Fox 34 is locked out. The Ti mtn bike has a massive stiff downtube, and small center triangle, with stiff wheels. The La Cabra design has a secret sauce geometry that is stable with a cushier ride. It is also nearly one inch lower to the ground which helps tracking and comfort. I'm doing a short one week tour the end of January, so will see if my initial old school touring ideas work out on the new bike off road.

      Sounds like you've got your ride dialled in! Interesting "secret sauce" geometry...will have to check it out. So where are you going on your late January ride?

    • @Mike-vd2qt
      @Mike-vd2qt Před 4 měsíci

      @@reinhartbigl367 Short tour in San Diego County, Approx 240 miles. Leave from Ocean Beach, over Laguna Mtns, drop into Anza Borrego desert at Ocotillo S-2 and I-8, north to Julian on S-2 and 78, south back to Old Hwy 80 in Pine Valley on S-1, return to beach. Leave beach on Sun 6-7am to avoid traffic, Same with return from Alpine, early start on weekend to complete loop and avoid traffic. Laguna Mtns and desert are sweet winter rides.

    Good work on documenting your ride. What bus did you take to Banff and was it from Calgary airport? Was you bike in the luggage storage space on the bus?

    • @reinhartbigl367
      @reinhartbigl367  Před 13 dny

      Thanks Cindy!
      I took the Brewster bus from Calgary Airport to Banff. I took my bike (in the box I flew with) and it wasn't a problem. Also, they delivered me to the HI Banff hostel , which was great as it's up on Tunnel Mountain. No problem with the bike box in the luggage hold of the bus. If you are considering Brewster, I would inform them in advance (if you can) that you have a bike box.
      I hope this helps and have a great ride!
      Cheers!

      Apologies for the unwanted audio...it was my first time trying to capture an entire ride on video and, as with almost everything done the first time, much is learned. Wth respect to the noise (much of it wind noise... :-( , I'll be upgrading the microphone for subsequent rides.

Good interaction with the camera and showing us plenty of scenery with added information. Honestly this was a fantastic insight to the GDMBR/TD route. 👍
