Here’s a tip for anyone trying this on their own, turn the nut 90 degrees in the vice and do all the filing sideways. This will keep the nut from bending/distorting if you clamp it too hard if your nut is made from a softer metal like brass. Being able to have the nut tightly gripped will also help if you’re running into problems with it moving as you are filing

About 18 years ago I turned a socket wrench part from craftsman into a knights ring, the round part of the socket. I've seen rings like it in the stores from $100 to $200. I tryed to polish it with cloth for a couple of years 😋.(I worked 3rd shift and didn't get the rest that I needed thanks to some step "kids".) Years later I finally got it polished right. I used different emry cloths and then once a week I would use auto polish for chrome. Then I would use silver polish on it and then buff it with an old sock. Now it shines brightly in the sun. I also do this for my swords and knives. 😀

    Awesome work.
Using a softer Brass nut of the same size would likely speed the filing/cutting process up somewhat. Also, consider using some cutting fluid when cutting with the hacksaw, it'll make cutting a lot easier, and swill some of the steel chips out of the way, stopping any wandering.
Also, use pieces of bicycle inner tube to secure stuff in vice jaws to stop your work from slipping. 🤙
