He used to be a member of National Smokers Alliance (think of it as a Libertarian group for smokers) but after his diagnosis quit and became a staunch anti-smoking advocate. He would die 5 years later in 2001. One of the most shocking moments for me was when Morton says that if the government outlawed cigs he'd be happy because then he would quit. The advice of a doctor sitting in front of him meant nothing to him so long as the government says it's okay to smoke. Stunning.

I really hate to say this about the deceased, but part of the issue here is Mort, and the crowd in general, had no concept of personal responsibility - they could only comprehend the Reagan-Thatcher brand of the idea. There is a very clear difference between government regulation and big government regulation. Government regulation you can point to the exact place in the Constitution that authorizes that regulation - the majority of the time being found in the Enumerated Powers Clause. By design, the Federal Government is only authorized to perform a very limited number of tasks that could not reasonably be performed by the individual states or the people, with a bias towards leaving things to the states. Big government regulation, you can't point to the exact place in the Constitution that authorizes the regulation, or you have to reference the Commerce Clause, the General Welfare Clause, or call the regulation a "tax" because it can't be justified through normal means.

I really hate to say this about the deceased, but part of the issue here is Mort, and the crowd in general, had no concept of personal responsibility - they could only comprehend the Reagan-Thatcher brand of the idea. Mort himself died of lung cancer from smoking for years, Ron Paul did say "no", in his personal life. Sort of helps you understand the difference between statist and libertarian philosophy.
Sadly, all of the great evidence and legality Ron Paul mentioned went completely over their heads.

By design, the Federal Government is only authorized to perform a very limited number of tasks that could not reasonably be performed by the individual states or the people, with a bias towards leaving things to the states.
Big government regulation, you can't point to the exact place in the Constitution that authorizes the regulation, or you have to reference the Commerce Clause, the General Welfare Clause, or call the regulation a "tax" because it can't be justified through normal means.
