Morton Downey Jr. Show (1988) | feat. Rev. Al Sharpton | Racially Motivated Crime

  • Sample episode of Morton Downey, Jr. how from The Out Of The Woods Collection discussing Police Violence and Racial Profiling. Guests include Reverend Al Sharpton (National Youth Movement), Dr. Gloria Toote, Curtis Sliwa (Guardian Angels), John Flynn (Coalition Against Crime), Prof. Michael Levin (CUNY) and Cyril Boynes of C.O.R.E.
Downey was a local sensation with his evening talk show on channel 9 New York. Eventually the show was syndicated nationally. A take off on Donahue and Oprah, he rode the success of the "shock jock" phenomenon of Howard Stern and don Imus, but the DNA of the show and JERRY SPRINGER, can be traced to JOE PYNE, a talk show host on radio and TV in the late 1960s, who also used the controversy of the changing times to boost his ratings.

I was a member of the NAN. My trust in Al Sharpton caused me to be broke and struggling from years after my projects on Wall Street were attacked by haters. George Floyd died over $20 and Al Sharpton wouldn't have given him a penny if he would have asked him that favor however Al Sharpton shows up when the man is dead for his fame and fee and free meal. Which is pretty funny, since this show was the forerunner to that sort of trashy crap that came next. Difference is that, as you stated, Morton Downey Jr. was bringing up a lot of important points which became too real to last long on the air, whereas dumb paternity test and feral children shows are a lot safer content for today's braindead drama-seeking trash tv viewers. Isn't it a shame?

    O M G!!
    I cant believe this...
I got chills seeing this THROWBACK!!!
    Morton Downey Jr. WOW!!
I am a native NY'er and was in the thick of all of this.
I lived on the borderline of Brooklyn/Queens
    Queens...the Howard Beach end.
There was/is the Lindenwood Diner which we could walk to. Oh and the Super Duper FRESH "Bagel Bin" stayed crowed from warm bagels you could just tear into.
    Warm freshly made..
    no toasting or anything..
    It was just super soft!
    Back to the Diner
They acted funny styled..but after awhile it was cool to go there.
There was this very friendly young guy who would bring the water to our tables.. His name was Jon.
Well cant remember the time frame but when all this particular drama happened, Al Sharpton and others were in the thick of it, and later they made a tv movie..
    >these black guys were caught in Howard Beach at night. Something you DONT DO.
Sorry, there were different stories and its been 30 years..
But the black guys got caught in the racist Howard Beach at night.
    Gotti territory..
    Anyway, they saw them,
it was a bunch of them which formed a mob/gang with bats and chains..chased the guys to where there was no where to go.. and they ran across the hwy and were killed.
Later it was found out that the "Water Boy" from the Lindenwood Diner the friendly guy "Jon" was the leader of the whole thing.
    We were like what??
Then it was a tumultuous time.. Then other such crimes happened. It was ugly.
I found out months ago..less than a year that "Jon" felt so guilty of what happened. He carried it all those years.
I think his sister said he was in Florida? Do NOT quote me on that.. anyway, after all those years he committed suicide.
She said he never could come to grips to what happened back then.
This video served as a throwback two-fold with the guardian angels with Curtis Sliwa.
Boy oh Boy.. New York in those days, the stuff I've seen, etc.
    SMH!!

      Crazy fucking city life!!!
I live in Las Vegas, it's so much worse here than the tourists know... but they throw the homeless into mental institutions, then they ship them to California with a one-way ticket and no way to get back, before the tourists can be offended by their existence.
I was homeless for 3 years in Las Vegas. I was a prostitute by the age of 19.
Indeed, it was related to my uncontrollable drug use, but why does this society treat homeless persons and drug addicts like outright criminals and literal trash??

Everybody commenting “things haven’t changed much” have zero perspective. There were 1,896 murders in New York City in 1988. Murders peaked in 1990 with 2,245. There were 462 in 2020, up from around 300 since 2013. This is old NYC and it wasn’t safe. Nostalgia clouds your memories. Things have changed. Dramatically.

Morton Downey Jr. was so far ahead of his time that we've already eclipsed this sort of content being normalized on TV to wrapping all the way around to the same sort of pearl clutching and outrage that got it canceled back in its time. It was impressive that it got to the point where this sort of discussion became mainstream, but its more recent incarnation was pumped up with steroids to up the "entertainment value", and lost its credibility. Yeah, Morton had a flair for the dramatic, but his points are just as relevant today as they were back then. Discussing it on TV is just a circus now, and the melodramatic detractors who want it silenced are nothing but clowns looking for attention.

No, he didn't. He worked for the FBI after 1983, following his role in a drug sting operation involving the Franzese Colombo crime family. In 2002, he was again part of an undercover sting operation posing as a Latin American drug lord which was caught on tape. As a result, he was not prosecuted of any wrongdoing.
