Morton Downey Jr. Show (1988) | feat. Rev. Al Sharpton | Racially Motivated Crime

- čas přidán 9. 09. 2018
- Sample episode of Morton Downey, Jr. how from The Out Of The Woods Collection discussing Police Violence and Racial Profiling. Guests include Reverend Al Sharpton (National Youth Movement), Dr. Gloria Toote, Curtis Sliwa (Guardian Angels), John Flynn (Coalition Against Crime), Prof. Michael Levin (CUNY) and Cyril Boynes of C.O.R.E.
Downey was a local sensation with his evening talk show on channel 9 New York. Eventually the show was syndicated nationally. A take off on Donahue and Oprah, he rode the success of the "shock jock" phenomenon of Howard Stern and don Imus, but the DNA of the show and JERRY SPRINGER, can be traced to JOE PYNE, a talk show host on radio and TV in the late 1960s, who also used the controversy of the changing times to boost his ratings.

Sadly 33 years from when this originally aired this is still the topic of many discussion panels today.
This is nonsense.
33 years from now and it will still be a topic.
@@jamesbowman8138 & the fact still remains its the human race as we all bleed red & everyone one is related if you consider the Adam & Eve theory.
That’s what I was thinking...it’s a money maker for good ole race baiters
And even more sadly, the conversation about it continues to be disingenuous with people making points that are more about sticking it to one group than to actually making a point worth making.
This episode should be seen by everybody considering the events that are going on.
They're all being manipulated
Trump's running mate, perhaps? Dig his fookin' bones up and put him on a stage echoing the insanity of Donkey Don tRUMP.
I was a member of the NAN. My trust in Al Sharpton caused me to be broke and struggling from years after my projects on Wall Street were attacked by haters. George Floyd died over $20 and Al Sharpton wouldn't have given him a penny if he would have asked him that favor however Al Sharpton shows up when the man is dead for his fame and fee and free meal. Only when he can benefit from the situation, he's there ..
Yes‼ Al Sharpton😡 The Money Pimp😡 Race Baiter😡 Only Shows Up To Make An Appearance When It Benefits His Pockets😡‼
Sharpton is a poverty pimp, always has been.
I feel so sorry that a 12 year old black girl was not paid to kill Al Sharpton in the name of Alan Keyes, because that is patriotic!
Jesus it took you to go through that to realize that Sharpton is a fucking savage?
I'm sorry
Amazing conversation to be held on prime time TV. Media shut all this type of talk down by Y2K.
Now that I think about it, u are correct. Jerry Springer had just stepped in around '98
Yeah, "media" shut it down. Riiiiiight. Of course. Darn that "media."
My man Morton..another childhood gem for me...
This show is way before my time, but seems way ahead of time. It was interesting compared to watching people not understanding how to deal with their abusive 11 year old kid or getting test done to see if he is the father not.
Exactly 💯
Which is pretty funny, since this show was the forerunner to that sort of trashy crap that came next. Difference is that, as you stated, Morton Downey Jr. was bringing up a lot of important points which became too real to last long on the air, whereas dumb paternity test and feral children shows are a lot safer content for today's braindead drama-seeking trash tv viewers. Isn't it a shame?
This show needs to be re broadcast to millions.............Best discussion on Racially Motivated Crime ever!!!
Damn! I miss Morton Downey Jr. He was one of the stars that crashed and burned in a short time. I wish they would release the complete series of his show on DVD!
I went to a show, he was a nice guy off-screen.

Honestly, in those days the Talk Shows are the greatest because they brought on leaders that are knowledgeable, informative, educational and powerful.
I remember this show being on tv. It used to air late night on the weekend in my area.
This show is too real for 2021! 🤣
O M G!!
I cant believe this...
I got chills seeing this THROWBACK!!!
Morton Downey Jr. WOW!!
I am a native NY'er and was in the thick of all of this.
I lived on the borderline of Brooklyn/Queens
Queens...the Howard Beach end.
There was/is the Lindenwood Diner which we could walk to. Oh and the Super Duper FRESH "Bagel Bin" stayed crowed from warm bagels you could just tear into.
Warm freshly made..
no toasting or anything..
It was just super soft!
Back to the Diner
They acted funny styled..but after awhile it was cool to go there.
There was this very friendly young guy who would bring the water to our tables.. His name was Jon.
Well cant remember the time frame but when all this particular drama happened, Al Sharpton and others were in the thick of it, and later they made a tv movie..
>these black guys were caught in Howard Beach at night. Something you DONT DO.
Sorry, there were different stories and its been 30 years..
But the black guys got caught in the racist Howard Beach at night.
Gotti territory..
Anyway, they saw them,
it was a bunch of them which formed a mob/gang with bats and chains..chased the guys to where there was no where to go.. and they ran across the hwy and were killed.
Later it was found out that the "Water Boy" from the Lindenwood Diner the friendly guy "Jon" was the leader of the whole thing.
We were like what??
Then it was a tumultuous time.. Then other such crimes happened. It was ugly.
I found out months ago..less than a year that "Jon" felt so guilty of what happened. He carried it all those years.
I think his sister said he was in Florida? Do NOT quote me on that.. anyway, after all those years he committed suicide.
She said he never could come to grips to what happened back then.
This video served as a throwback two-fold with the guardian angels with Curtis Sliwa.
Boy oh Boy.. New York in those days, the stuff I've seen, etc.
SMH!!

Thanks for the back info! 👍
Taylor Christina I know me too . Awesome wasn’t it 🙂
Crazy fucking city life!!!
I live in Las Vegas, it's so much worse here than the tourists know... but they throw the homeless into mental institutions, then they ship them to California with a one-way ticket and no way to get back, before the tourists can be offended by their existence.
I was homeless for 3 years in Las Vegas. I was a prostitute by the age of 19.
Indeed, it was related to my uncontrollable drug use, but why does this society treat homeless persons and drug addicts like outright criminals and literal trash??
"No man should look down upon another man, unless he is helping them up"
-Martin Luther King
As if a person is no longer human when they succumb to addiction or mental illness or poverty...
Ya'll Howard Beach made national news when a group of goons assaulted a black man for no reason other than he was not from Howard Beach, remember that.
That was ignorant and cowardly what those punks did and I remember the instigator. leader committed suicide.
HE WAS NEEDED TO RAISE AWARENESS OF WHAT'S GOING ON AND CONTINUES TO THIS DAY LOVED THIS SHOW
Morton Downey Jr. is an angel compared to today's media cowards
He shit....d young mix group of guys d took d 4 front stood on d pedestal of principles an gd morals sum Morton could of possibly do. He an d whites talks about crimes but d 400 hundred yrs of slavery an white atrocities supercedes even Hitler's evils. So take tat an put it in your pipe an smoke it

Morton Downey Jr. was a great man!!!! I am glad he had his TV show. I am glad he had this video!!
Back in the day when a talk show host could smoke.
You mean they can't? You're wrong,
They can smoke now, Just not on set....lmao
Not a very bright comment, considering. Morton Downey died of Lung cancer

I remember when this show was once broadcasted from the Apollo Theatre. Al Sharpton and Roy Inniss were on stage and got into it, and Roy Inniss knocked
Al Sharpton on his ass.

Could you imagine if Morton was still around today? He would’ve been cancelled after the 1st show. The frail Snowflakes would be permanently damaged. They would say his talk show is killing people.
Him and Geraldo as well his show was ratchet as well remember when he got his nose broke on tv because the fight that broke out on stage

Amy idiot that believes that 13% of the American population is responsible for 85% of the murders in America either can't count or is down right stupid, because common sense clearly dictates that people perpetrate crimes of all kinds against their neighbors...
I really wish you had shows like this today. The activist seem to have trouble dealing with the statistics, however. Some things have not changed
Which statistics are you referring to?
@@JasonWilliams-ft8wethe crime data. Yes, most activists are not very good with facing the raw data
The black on black crime in St.Louis is out of control
Pretty sure I was in the audience for this show. Good stuff! LOL
I used to LOVE this show! Morton Downey Jr was a badass.
It was the precursor to The Jerry Springer Show
@@VeeFoster Hmm sort of,only it was political drama.
@@A358M Jerry Springer was drama minus the politics.
@@VeeFoster yes I agree.
@@VeeFoster yes it wasn’t taken seriously though, everyone knew what it was, whereas mort was taken seriously for the first couple years it ran, cause it was a political show. Jerry did take his format though
Was never a fan of this guy, but this is still revelent today and the discussion hasn't changed much. 30 years later?
30 years later, and the next generation perpetrates the exact same social dynamics in America.
The problem is poverty. Poverty of safe housing. Poverty of medical care. Poverty of educational opportunities. Poverty of living-wage jobs. Poverty of food. Poverty of life. Poverty of hope.
poverty is not the main cause though as there are radically different crime rates amongst different racial groups that are poor
@@brianmeen2158 I won't dispute that. Do you have any sourcing? I'd like to know more so I can be better informed about this topic in the future.
Fast Forward to 1992 - O.J .Simpson
Then go to 2020 - Black Lives Matter
NOTHING HAS CHANGED
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Black Lives Matter made things worse for black people . That’s not even taking into account that their leaders turned out to be scammers
She’s Right! Don’t Let Misinformation Spreads Wrong Way!
I remember watching this on channel 9 NYC, along with the episode with Roy Innis from CORE when they had the infamous fight.
A black guy started a fight? Never.
Sadly, I think the stats are still similar. 30 years later. Please corrrrect me if I am wrong.
A SHOW THAT TRULY DEALT WITH HOT BUTTON TOPICS AND ALLOWED THE TRUE HUMAN EMOTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THOSE TOPICS BE DISPLAYED UNCHECKED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL!!!!
Exactly. Now they want to dumb down our youths.

Casually smoking on a talk show in the late 80s, never saw this before.
Everybody smoked on talk shows in the eighties.
My type of show!!
She was correct about the numbers from 1977 to 1987….
This show made me learn about politics so that I could argue with people. The episode where Roy Innes knocked Al Sharpton on his ass, specifically.
Classic Show.
I forgot Al Sharpton pulled an Oprah
1988?? So this was under the Reagan administration
Good ol days of 1988👍👍
NOW THAT is what we need back in this country "The Guardian Angels." I loved them.
They were idiots lol
The Guardian Angel's got caught up like all vigilante groups: sued for targeting blacks, extorting and shaking down drug dealers, taking bribes and kickbacks from criminal street gangs, arresting innocent people they ended in disgrace and shame. Why pay the police for nothing.
The Al Sharpton of the late 80s maintained that there are racists of all colors and drug dealers should be thrown in prison for "maximum" time. The good rev would be deemed alt right adjacent today with those statements.
Exactly. Morton gave everyone a chance to speak and present their testimony and evidence also. Different times back then on TV.
I will not say I am sorry for wanting Al Sharpton dead for the love of Alan Keyes!
@@rogerhackler223 that’s all your kind do is wish death and cause death. You all are devils
🗣️ Let’s hear your numbers 😂 loved it!!!
Everybody commenting “things haven’t changed much” have zero perspective. There were 1,896 murders in New York City in 1988. Murders peaked in 1990 with 2,245. There were 462 in 2020, up from around 300 since 2013. This is old NYC and it wasn’t safe. Nostalgia clouds your memories. Things have changed. Dramatically.
The Giuliani administration cleaned up the city block by block in the 90’s. They did a great job but some of the “community activists” didn’t like it cleaned up. Lol
Thank you.
We need shows like this in 2021 to bring these same subjects to the forefront..a lot has changed.. and a lot has stayed the same.💯
Why so more activist can get on T.V. and call crime statistics lies?

This Host is doing the most
Morton Downey Jr. was so far ahead of his time that we've already eclipsed this sort of content being normalized on TV to wrapping all the way around to the same sort of pearl clutching and outrage that got it canceled back in its time. It was impressive that it got to the point where this sort of discussion became mainstream, but its more recent incarnation was pumped up with steroids to up the "entertainment value", and lost its credibility. Yeah, Morton had a flair for the dramatic, but his points are just as relevant today as they were back then. Discussing it on TV is just a circus now, and the melodramatic detractors who want it silenced are nothing but clowns looking for attention.

Sharpton on here talking about drugs and how it was hurting the black community all along he himself was distributing cocaine. I will never trust anything this man ever says.
No, he didn't. He worked for the FBI after 1983, following his role in a drug sting operation involving the Franzese Colombo crime family. In 2002, he was again part of an undercover sting operation posing as a Latin American drug lord which was caught on tape. As a result, he was not prosecuted of any wrongdoing.
@@dafourie2025 he did the 2002 sting to save his ass from approaching those FBI agents to make a cocaine deal. The Colombo crime family had nothing to do with it Al Sharpton went on to be a snitch to cover his own ass. Al Sharpton has always spoke with a forked tongue.
