- Are advneture boots worth the price or should you consider more protection then they can offer?
Hopefully this will help you out in your purchase for your next dual sport or adventure ride. At the end of the day I think if you are heading into the dirt you should seriously consider an MX boot. If you are just out for a light ADV tour of the back roads then the ADV boots is a comfortable option.

Everything said here is spot on. If you’re going down the shops just wear something sensible. But if you’re going on a challenging or adventurous ride, just gear up and be prepared. Listen to Solid. 😉
Had the same experience with initially thinking what have i done buying these MX style boots, hated them at first cause i couldnt feel anything on the bike. So glad i pushed through, now i use them no matter where i ride. I went with Oneal RMX boots and seem to be a sort of inbetween a full MX and ADV
boot.
Great topic CoS
Thanks for mentioning those Trev, I might check out the O'N-RMX myself.
I've been considering these or the the tech 3.
Spot on CoS...my adventure boots are just for commuting and the occasional dirt road commute. I do like my Tech 7's, they toke a dit of riding to break them in , about 8000km now for me and they are actually OK , and comfortable to walk in. MX boots are uncomfortable, but so is a broken leg....been there done that twice in ADV boots...then I bought the Tech 7's....
Thanks for great advice. Especially the waterproof decision. I’m just about to get some new boots and this has answered my questions perfectly.
Glad I could help! Best of luck 👍
Totally agree, I use both for different applications, off road boots for the dirt and adventure/touring boots for road and gravel as I find the extra feel and dexterity are are a real plus for rear brake feel on wet tar seal and skatey dry gravel corners.
Ahh yesss… my Saturday mornings have returned to their regular schedule.. glad your back at it ..✊🏼
Thanks mate 👍
Great studio, keep up the good work
Alpinestars Tech 7 enduro drystar
Love them for enduro, ADV and dual sporting.
🏍️💨
Thanks COS!
You are so right. Safety first, then comfort, if possible!
Glad to see you back after COVID mate. Keep smiling.
Thanks, will do!
This was a good review on two popular boots, I do have a pair of 'Adventure' boots, this was because most of my riding is on roads with occasional dirt road travel, never single track. The points you made were about those riders who do the off road stuff and the importance of having the proper boot for the purpose. David.....Adelaide/Kilburn....Tiger 900GT & Scrambler.....
I always wore MX boots. I couldn't find them once for some odd reason when I was headed out for a ride. Already fully convinced that they were safer I had to concede to a normal pair of boots. Yup, broke my ankle that day. Pissed off! I never go without the MX boots now and if for some reason I can't find them on a future ride then I simply won't go.
Solid recommendation, Solid!
So true; waterproof ADV boots are fine for road riding in the rain but you’ll regret it at your 1st stream crossing. Did a two week tour of Pakistan last year with waterproof ADV boots 30/70 off-road/paved and even the paved roads had stream crossings. All it took was 1 and the boots filled with water and the rest of the day was spent sloshing around in wet boots. If I had a drill I would have punched holes in the bottoms.
So you're saying non water proof boots would have been better?... either way, you would have been sloshing in water....
Thanks BD very good advice 🤣🙂🤙
After extensive research I opted for the I feel safe in my gaerne fastback enduro. It was a good choice. Very happy with them.
I have Fastback. It's good for trails, and I think they are comfortable. I wear them all day.
@@khaccanhle1930 they are the maximum protection that I can find yet still with the ability to as you say, walk, or rather wear all day. They are just flexible enough to walk around and supermarket without looking like a freak, people don’t notice to any significant extent.
A buddy broke his foot a week ago in MX boots. They are the best to wear but you still need to be careful. - Frank
I agree.
I use both but... crazy thing is... in Australia, on my WR450F in the Aussie bush, I have MX boots. but here in Japan where I ONLY ride MX on a MX track (XR250F), to get a boot that could fit my large calfs, I had to go for an Endure boot that had adjustable calf section!
Fully support what you have said
I've been using my forma adv low boots for a few years now and they have been great. I may switch back to my Mx boots for off roading as they do offer more protection.
A* Tech 7, here. I’ve been down a couple times in them, but nothing very dramatic. I’m still fairly sure they saved me some pain, as I’ve had a thoroughly bruised foot from a minor lowside in my relatively lightweight commuter boots. That was the moment I decided the Tech 7’s would be worth the cost for off-road, and ordered them.
It took a bit to get used to them, and I adjusted my shifter up two notches to simplify up-shifts. I quickly found that, although they’re clunky to walk in, they’re really quite comfortable. I didn’t actually expect that, and I’ve come to really like them.
I'm lucky enough to have a selection of boots. I've dropped my 701 more times than I can recall. If I'm riding off road, Mx boots. Waterproofing on Mx boots is a bad idea for a long trip. I've got the Drystar Alpinestar 7. You're damn right, solid. As soon as those boots get wet they stay feckin' wet. And they then rot your feet until you get home but they're great for a damp day ride. On a road ride you're really unlucky if a bike lands on your leg but on a tour, you'll walk. So a comfortable pair of boots wins out. I'm riding Norway's fjords, across Sweden and down to my family in southern Finland in early summer 24. Falco lace up boots CE AA will be my boot of choice. I can get off my bike and walk up to beauty spots. I can walk in Mx boots no problem and ride in dirt with knee braces and body armour. One the road, abrasion and sudden stops kill a rider if everything goes tits up. In dirt thumping trees and your bike landing on you is what hurts you and for us dual sports riders we get both risks.
Sidi adveture gortex for me. Alexfactory has them for $300 USD delivered. Zero break in, super comfy, 100% waterproof to the top of the boot. Best boots i ever had. Really didnt like MX style boots. Had some expesive MX boots and some cheap MSR boots. I personally wont go back to MX boots. Might as well wear skit boots, they are about as comfortable as MX boots. Just saying. I get the protection aspec. I have never hurt an ankle in 35 yrs od riding. Lucky? Yeah maybe, but im getting older and no longer go fast or try things im not comfortable with. So yep, Sidi adventure gortex boots. With scorpion waterproof pants, id have to swim in water before water gets in. I have tested them by walking in creeks up to the top. Not 1 drop of water inside. Thats hard to beat for $300.
I have broken my left foot in mc accident… I now wear Tech 7 Dry version. These have allowed me too ride harder of road! Definitely have saved me countless sever injuries and continue to take a beating.
Based on this video I bought MX boots as my first moto boots. It was a good choice. It has a lot of protection. Now I will buy urban moto shoes as well for riding around town. Having both is the perfect way.
MX boots, pretty much every ride. The only time I don’t go MX boot is if I’m riding someone else’s bike and can’t set up levers for the space my boots need. I don’t care if I look like a dork on the street. I went for protection first. I do wish they were more comfortable to walk in, but that was secondary for me.
Well I took your advice . Just ordered a pair of low budget boots , O Neal element boot . Been riding around in work boots on my CRF300L for a couple years now.. Thanks for the heads up . 69 years old, so do not need a broken leg .
It will feel awkward to start with but you will adapt quickly 👍
@@EpicHunter62 I like the boots . But they do not work well on a stock 300 . Think I need a longer shifter so I can get my toe under it easier . Also the boots are hard and you cant feel the shifter and don't know when you are about to engage it .
Moto Giant does a lot of adventure moto camping. He rides mostly on the road but does some mild off road to access primitive campsites. He recently had his sleeping bag sucked into his rear wheel, locking it up at 80 MPH (130 KPH) on an interstate highway. He high sided and the Tiger 800 landed on his right foot, severing it at the ankle and damaging it too much to reattach. I almost never ride on interstate highways but I'm thinking about MX boots for my ADV riding, on and off road.
🥺
I only use ADV boots ( formas like yours ) I have the long and shirt ones , been using them for 8-9 years ( use the long ones for Enduro and harder ADV riding and shirt ones for road and light ADV riding and long trips - better suited to walking around and space without another pair of shoes etc. Also I have crashed a bit and had my bike on my leg and foot ( my foot was twisted the other direction ) If I was wearing MX boots would have definitely done more damage to say knee , ankle , as is done nothing . As the foot in the boot was able to move and not locked in place . MX boots have their place most definitely on motorcross tracks and Hard Enduro ( it’s all about the way you land or hit )
Adventure tax! You are so right, Solid.
Adv boots for me! I’m into sharing the load with my ankle knee and hips.. I wear hard knee guards to compensate for all but the crush👍
Yep. It's the same with jackets. Adventure riders wear expensive jackets and sweat like a pig in summer. Me I wear a fully ventilated jacket with upgraded armour that is quarter the price and keeps you cool. Has liners, that's all you need. Yes I ride a BMW and wear value for money items.
Agreed. The ADV jacket with D30 is kind of the illusion of protection. What are the odds the jacket elbow pad and pants knee pad will actually be in the right place when you go down vs. dedicated armour?
I would have broken my leg twice in the last year and a half without my MX boots, I know this because it damn near broke with the boots. Trying to keep up with my son in the mountains, I need all the armor I can get.
Food for thought, thanks 😊Safety first. But for us with wide feet there is not a lot of choice, esp re mx boots. Also, the equation should be more nuanced - for eks many ride slower on gravel tracks reducing risk compared to street riding etc. And having solid support on your ankles and legs often transfers trauma to the knees - so use knee braces with mx boots. In addition, for adventure riding, get boots with good grippy soles so you can manhandle your bike without slipping over (mx soles can be a nightmare in mud or snow).
I have crashed in mx boots and broke some toes but the real pain came from the heavy pendulum swing from the weight and twisted the hell outa my back. Proper ragdoll event. Still the best protection I think
i found that a short boot as well as a long boot is needed if you can afford it , because you are more likely to throw on the short boot if you are just going down to the shop and because it's less bulky it will fit under most jeans or pants easy. mx tall and adventure tall boots are a better choice when riding all day. mx if it's going to get crazy but a tall adv boot with 4+ clamps is not a bad compromise for most. a short boot like from SIDI is much better than your running shoes.
i use seal skin socks with my MX boots feet dry hard for water getting in side. i use them im kayking only had water in ones becouse i feel out the boat the rush of water riped down.
Rev'it Expedition GTX. Nuff said.
Well, I need to ask myself how to define "serious offroading". I can't expect that my road to wherever while "adventure riding" is anything less that 90% of asphalt, but this 10% "offroad" section is unknown - can be gravel, can be rocky. I'm trying to choose right boots, and I'm in the pickle. Especially that I can't afford buying a pair for every ocassion.
All sounds great except...
Try finding an adventure boot in size 15 US (USA). I go adventure riding with cramped toes... at least 99% of me is happy 😢😂😅
It's simple to me. Test the flex on the boot. If your ankle can bend as much as the boot the you're all good.
I fucked up once getting my feet between the legs and a rock riding gravel in adventure boots. That hurts like shit. Have mx boots too. However, long distance in mx boots on hot weather is not too great
You'd think there's a best of both worlds option by now.
Just a heads up that the Himalayan 450 specs have been leaked. Looks to be 210kg wet weight which takes it off my 2024 new bike list 😢
Thanks for the info 👍
The reason I had a decade away from riding, was when I was riding off road I flipped my bike climbing a steep hill & the bike ended up on top of me. That wasnt so much the problem. All of the weight of the bike through one of the foot peddles landed on my foot.
I didn't have great boots on.
Lost a few months work, being self employed I wasn't entitled to get any sick pay. Ended up selling my bike for much less than I should of & didn't look at another bike for a full decade after that. I was an aggressive off road rider, which leads to taking more risks & having more accidents. Stupidly I didn't have the right footwear. Which I thought was fine until my bike landed on my foot. I should of known you can name any part of my body & I've either been stitched up had an operation or a break. I'm pretty accident prone always have been. But I'd say it was mostly down to myself on most occasions.
Solid is 100% correct make sure you have the right kit. No matter what you think it looks like.
HaHa I went for an ADV boot,, Years ago I was looking for boots,, I was reading adv mag and this guy was doing a review on the KTM 1290,, honestly the bike had no interest for me,but I liked his boots,so I emailed him.. He replied syayng his boots where Falco,s and why am I not interested in the bike !!!!,, So I looked for Falco,s in the UK,only one stockist,a pair of Falco Mixi,s £130 which was and is cheap.... I do,nt need MX boots,, yeah off road they offer good protection,,but on road they would be a handicap.. Falco,s these days are much more expensive,, but I can wholeheartedly recommend them as a comfortable middle of the road boot....
there's a huge con to waterproof boots in a hot climate like australia that you didn't mention. they trap and pool sweat the last thing you want on a multi week adventure ride is disgusting rancid sweaty boots. met a bloke in windorah that was close to being flown to brisbane because a small scratch on his leg had become infected from his sweaty waterproof adv boots. he was in hospital for a few days.
enduro boots are the go.
Good point 👍
MX boot for off road. When the bike falls on yer leg in a low speed fall you’ll be glad ya did.
I guess you never had 14hr wet days in +3C to appreciate goretex waterproof gear.. boots specifically.
Have no doubt that MX boot works better for your riding, but don't assume that's the case for everyone else.
For dirt only no brainer-mx boots. For adventure use including high speed road use its not so clear, plastic is not so abrasion resistant maybe?
I've heard this argument but I just can't believe the plastic isn't going to slide at least as well or better than a strip of leather. Not to mention that there's still going to be road impact for which plastic is clearly better.
Some of boot manufacturers (Forma etc) say this, it's not from me.
Looking like "one of those guys" yet acting respectfully is probably the best thing we can do to combat that sterotype.
Yep 👍
Adventure tax just like the safety tax😁
I did the thing you will hate the most, I bought the MX style boot, then decided it isnt comfortable. I put it back in the box and went back to work boots. tell me how to get the big boys back out and actually like riding in them.
I'd start with wearing them around the house to work them in. It's still going to suck to start with though. No way past that unfortunately but push through that and it becomes natural.
@@chroniclesofsolid I'll have to try it.
All you have to do is imagine how dumb you'll feel, in the hospital, on pain killers, that you weren't willing to put up with a little discomfort of the MX boots which (*may*) have prevented your injury or at least reduced it's severity. Be the House in Vegas and play with the odds in your favor.
You watched the video, smash the like button, come on! Please…. 😊
The new adventure boots like my sidi ad2 offer more protection than old school moto boots like hi- point or alpine-star, and way more protection than van’s hi tops or converse chuck taylors. Having said that i think it depends on where and how you ride.
Comfort and protection and a little style makes for better riding experience! Moto boots in my opinion are overkill for most riders , just dont do stupid shit!!!
I came off my DR650 in a first gear stack on a slippery, slick, hard pack trail and was wearing Forma ADV boots, My right ankle got squashed between the bike and a rock and I ended up chipping a piece of bone from my ankle. I Finally got back on the bike 3 days ago to get it blue slipped and ready for sale. Long story short, if you're riding anything more than a fire trail, use MX boots, ADV boots are for walking not riding.
The Adventure Tax.
A tax that requires you to buy a lot gear in grey or brown at twice the price for your daily 3 mile commute to your local latte shop.
Edit: I have an Africa Twin, so I can't throw too many stones at Adv guys.
"Looks": the most ridiculous factor in gear selection. Road or dirt it's a very dangerous sport. MX boots all the time. ADV boots are a near total illusion of protection.
Until people have owned both, they won't realize. Adventure boots are dressed up road boots, they are great for dirt roads and gravel or street but they are nothing compared to the protection of moto boots. I've hit stumps and rocks with my foot at speed with MX boots that would have crushed my foot with adventure or street boots.
There's simply no question. MX boots are pretty awful for feel of the controls, shifting and braking are hard to adjust to and with big feet you need to move the shifter around or you can't even get under it easily.
If you have never had a pair of MX boots you won't even know, they are a magnitude more rigid and protective, it's not even close.
Literally resting on the couch icing my post surgery broken ankle and ligament. Probably should have not worn adv boots…..
Thanks for the video. Nice job walking through the differences
That sucks mate 😞 heal fast 👍
If you want real protection, buy an MX boots, if you don't have enough money, buy it secondhand (used), if you don't find a used MX boots, thing about a solution to get one, if nothing work, use any other boots, they are the same except the look, for example the ADV boots just want to look as MX boots, but they don't give any protections, so just use a Caterpillar boot till you have the money to get an MX boots who are THE ONLY PROTECTIVE BOOTS PERIOD!!!
NOT
MX boots suck on the street and walking on the trails.
Wait till you get a foot peg plowing right into the top of your foot. I'd rather have MX boots. I have Rev it waterproof adventure boots that cost as much as my Alpinestars, but I trust my Alpinestars to protect my foot more than those waterproof Rev it boots. You can't beat MX boot for protections off-road.
