Repentance Means Repentance from Sin

  • The meaning of repentance in the New Testament should not really be in doubt. However, since teachers today often separate belief from repentance, I have gone through biblical examples of repentance, including in the New Testament, to show conclusively that repentance means repentance from sin. We truly leave our sins behind in Christ.

Another one who doesn't rightly divide the truth!
    Acts 13:38-39
Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
    Titus3:5
He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
    Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
    Philippians 3:9
and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.
    Romans1:17
For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “ The righteous will live by faith.”
    Romans 4:5
But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,
    Romans 4:6
And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
    Romans 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
    Romans 5:9
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him…
    Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Romans8:1
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
    Romans 8:39
nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    2 corrin 5:19
For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.

I believe it is you who is not dividing the Word correctly. In fact, as I see it, you are not even responding to the topic of the article. You ignore all of the Scripture quoted and referenced in my article. Then you post our own, which are primarily about faith being the means of salvation, which is not in doubt, and which is not the topic of my article. Rather, the topic is that repent in the New Testament means to turn from sin, just as it does in the Old Testament. It is furthermore that repentance necessarily comes along with faith in Christ. These things are clean through many passages of the New Testament from start to finish. The believer repents and believes. If he still lives in sin, he is basically denying Jesus Christ, and can expect punishment.
Some of the passages (and we could fine more if we wished):
      “yet when they come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of those who took them captive, saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong, we have committed wickedness';
      1 Kings 8:47
      “yet when they come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of their captivity, saying, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, and have committed wickedness';
      2 Chronicles 6:37

      Therefore I abhor myself,
And repent in dust and ashes.”
      Job 42:6
“They said, ‘Repent now everyone of his evil way and his evil doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers forever and ever.
      Jeremiah 25:5
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations.
      Ezekiel 14:6
“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord GOD. “Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin.
      Ezekiel 18:30
      “He shall not return to the land of Egypt;
But the Assyrian shall be his king,
      Because they refused to repent.
      Hosea 11:6
      NT:
John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
      Mark 1:4-5
Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
      Mark 1:14-15
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
“And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
“For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
“But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
      John 3:18-21
“I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.
      Luke 15:7
“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
      Luke 15:32
repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
      Luke 24:47
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
      Acts 3:19
“Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,
      Acts 17:30
“but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.
      Acts 26:20
Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear.
For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.
Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.
      Romans 11:20-22
For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.
Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The LORD will judge His people.”
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
      Hebrews 10:26-31
Revelation chapters 2-3, which includes the following passage and others like it:
“Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.
“And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.
“Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.
“I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.
She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”
      John 8:11
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
      John 5:14
Then we have repentance in the Lost Son, in Luke 15:
“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
‘I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,
“and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’
“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
“Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’
“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
      Matthew 7:21-23
And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!
“For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”
      Matthew 12:49-50
Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
      1 John 3:6
Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
      1 John 3:24
While there certainly are more passages like these in Scripture, I believe they suffice to show what the article intends: that repentance commonly means repentance from sin in the New Testament. That this repentance, which is turning from sin and living in obedience to God, is necessarily a part of faith in Christ. Without it, we would not know if someone belonged to Christ or not.
To deny this fact is not uncommon in certain church circles, such as among Baptists, some Nondenominational types, and certain Evangelicals. However, we cannot read the Bible, and we cannot read the New Testament, and miss that repentance is necessary, and basically what it entails. Recognizing this fact does not deny that our salvation comes from grace through faith, but rather the two truths are part of the intrinsic whole of faith, as they are a part of the whole teaching of Scripture.
Remember, even Romans 8:1, which you cite, finishes with: “who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” It qualifies its prior statement about those who have no condemnation.
I hope you can see the truth better now, and that you recognize the value and necessity of repentance.
      Take care.

I do not see your point. I recommend going back to the New Testament and just reading from start to finish. There are no two kinds of salvation, one starting in the middle of Acts somewhere. There are no two basic meanings of repentance, one for the first part and one for the second. The meaning of repent is present in the Gospels, Acts, Epistles, and Revelation. The fact that repentance comes with salvation is present in the Gospels, Acts, the Epistles, and Revelation. That is the only salvation preached, and it comes together with repentance and belief. That is why the Gospel call is - Repent and believe! Do no further twisting of Scripture trying to force antinomianism into it. The Christian obeys God.
