12 Things Guinea Pigs Love the Most

  • In this video, we will discover 12 things guinea pigs love the most.
    Hiding spots
Guinea pigs are prey animals and they find the most comfort in small, dark places where they can hide and feel safe.
A hiding spot allows them to shelter when they are spooked or feel threatened.
    Chewing
Guinea pig’ teeth grow continuously all their lives. They’re designed to be worn down to the right length by grinding away at food. In the wild, a guinea pig’s buffet menu often includes hard vegetation such as hay, twigs, tree branches, and other material that requires lots of chewing. The extensive chewing keeps their growing teeth under control. Most piggies also love fruit tree sticks such as Kiwi and apple sticks to nibble on.
    Exploring
Guinea pigs are curious creatures, and they love having the chance to explore new places.
Make sure to provide your little pet a large enough space to run around and satisfy their explorative nature.
Another way to ensure your guinea pig is happy, busy and stimulated is to make some holes in the side of a cardboard box and stuff the holes with yummy treats so they go in and out in search of their favorite treats.
    Fresh hay
It’s important to give your guinea pig high quality hay. It needs to smell nice and be dust free. Fresh and greenish hay is better than brown hay.
Be careful of some bagged hay from pet shops. Many have not had the dust extracted. It is best to find a local hay merchant and buy a bale of soft, fresh hay. Make sure to give your piggy additional hay types like Timothy and orchard hays.
    Being clean
Guinea pigs are innately clean animals, and they get very stressed out and frustrated when they are in a dirty, smelly environment.
A habitat with an accumulation of dust, urine, dirt, and poop can also cause respiratory problems in guinea pigs wherein they may have trouble breathing.
Keep your guinea pigs content and healthy by thoroughly cleaning their living space frequently.
    Spreading their scent
Like many other animals, guinea pigs are territorial creatures and they love marking their territory by spreading their scent.
In order to mark their territory, a guinea pig will often rub their bottom across the floor or against cage furnishings.
    6. Socialization
Guinea pigs are very social animals. In the wild, they live in large colonies that have intricate rules and hierarchies.
As pets, they still have these social instincts, and they love to spend time with other piggies or members of the household.
If you’re considering adopting one, it’s best to bring home two or more at a young age. Guinea pigs are much happier with company around.
    Being with you
Guinea pigs might be in just a small part of our lives, but to them, we are their whole life. They appreciate you and try to show their affection in many ways. Spending time with them will make them happy, and will lead to a longer-lasting and trusting relationship. Make sure not to isolate yourself from your piggy. This will make your little friend feel alone and neglected.
    A soft massage
If done right, petting can provide your guinea pig with a soothing overall sensation and help improve the bond between you and your pet.
Guinea pigs have personal preferences about being petted, and they often give signals about when you've rubbed the right spot or the wrong one.
Most guinea pigs don’t like being touched on their rear end. They prefer to be petted on the nose, under the chin or behind the ears, but try to keep your hands away from their butt.
Keep in mind that a guinea pig will not immediately accept pets from new owners or strangers.
    Eating their Cecotropes
Have you ever seen your guinea pig dip its head down between its hind legs, then come up chewing?
Well, your piggy is eating their cecotropes, which are soft feces that are nutrient-rich.
It’s important that you as a loving pet owner, respect your guinea pig’s nature. So, if your piggies spray urine, mount, or eat their own droppings, let them, as preventing them from their own nature can cause anxiety and confusion. Guinea pigs hate constant correction from you and it is important that you love your piggies just as they are.
    A little sunshine
Recent research suggests that sunlight is important for a guinea pig’s health. Like many other animals, piggies need sunshine to get their vitamin D, which keeps their bones and teeth healthy, but always make sure your guinea pig can move away to shade when they need to cool off.
    Treats
Guinea pigs love to eat so it's no surprise that feeding treats is something your guinea pigs love. But though piggies will eat just about anything, it is your job as an owner to ensure they remain healthy. Pay attention to your pet’s preferences. They may prefer one vegetable or fruit over another and will love you more when you feed them what they want.

Guinea pigs need patience and a lot of attention to make them feel at ease in your environment. My pigs don't even budge when I walk in and out of the room. If I pick one of them up and put them on my lap they will sprawl out and sometimes go to sleep. They even let me know when to put them down so they can go to the bathroom. My pigs act more like puppies than guinea pigs. I love how they stand up on their hind legs when I hand feed them. Honestly I love the little cuties they are joyful to have the 6 of them I have.

Just br gentle. Important they have sensation spines. So no harness or anything that might make them bend.
Say hi and offer a finger to sniffing nib le. This is not a bite. Now come from the side to pick up. If you come from above its like hawk claws grabbing prey animals. Enjoy.

Guinea pigs are one of my favourite 2 pets! Their just so soft cute and cuddly. My rabbit was my best friend, not just a pet. Guinea pigs are cute and I love their wheeking and squeaking. Feed them fruit and veg, un cooked of course. Cooked food is bad for rabbits and guinea pigs. I used to feed my rabbits parsley and dandelions! I LOVE guinea pigs SOOOO much!!!!

Remember if you have guneapigs that don’t feel comfortable with you even tho you have done everything right, it takes alot of patience for them to trust you they are pray animals and are on their toes for understandable reasons. I have had mine for 4 years and have done things with them everyday and one of them didn’t fully trust me before like three weeks ago so 4 years took for one of them and that’s okay. When you get to know them when they can relaxe around you they will create a relationship with you ❤

    • @marchduck2958
      @marchduck2958 Před dnem

I had an odd story of building trust, though. My relatives were looking after my piggies about a week I spent on a little trip in which they let them to stroll around our country house territory without my permission(they were young and fast back then and my relatives didn't knew properly how to carry them), so... they immediately ran and hide somewhere. One gladly was chilling under a bush where it was easy to catch but the other crawled under the shed. This one has some genetical problems and was probably scared in her childhood, so she was the fastest and the most cowardly. It was hard to get her from there, but they managed too.
So when I returned I noticed a change in their behavior: they didn't run away from visitors and easily let to take themselves. I have no idea why did it change them, but ever since then they are comfortable around me and my family.

My other piggie, S’mores, is pretty much the same exept sometimes she gets a little spooked when we first pick her up. As soon as she sees the lettuce she’s cool tho

Here's the thing: guinea pigs WANT to get to know their owners as they are naturally social and outgoing animals. However they are (understandably) hardwired to fear any creature bigger than them and capable of picking them up. But their instinctual defenses will decrease with time.

    Here are some tips
If you get 2 Wich I HIGHLY recommend...if you don't want fighting don't get 2 boys but if you don't want breeding don't get a boy and girl...I recommend you get 2 girls because they can't breed and they won't try and harm each other all the time.
If you want your guinea pig to stay happy get a big cage and if you want (you don't have to but this helps) you can build a big play cage with gates around and some mats that are soft enough so they don't get bumble foot...so they can run around once or twice a day every day if they have a small cage.
Please DONT mess with your guinea pig right when you get them because they need time to get used to their environment and bond with each other...I would say to wait 3 days before trying to bond with your pigs so they can get used to their new home
They don't always liked being picked up or pet, sometimes it's uncomfortable but it's nice to pet them to sleep.
They get easily scared of a loud noise so try not to make loud sounds because it can hurt their ears and scare them
If they squeak when you touch a bag or something they will think it's good and they will squeak at you asking for some food...
Try not to give so much fruits I say give them fruit every 3 weeks same with treats because it can cause their poop to be mushy and soft and it can give them a tummy ache if you give to much treats....
    Hopefully you take my advice!

Does the boy thing always apply? I have two boys but they really like each other and never fight

    • @20dancegirl
      @20dancegirl Před rokem +2

@@Jasonloveszelda no it absolutely doesn't its a fear mongering stigma against males that causes people to not get pairs of them which is highly important. Males argue more yes, especially over territory so they need more room than females, its always good to be perceptive of how they treat each other since you don't want to put two dominant males together. The only thing is if you see teeth chattering sadly you have to separate them that goes for male or female

    • @mousemetal1679
      @mousemetal1679 Před rokem

@@Jasonloveszelda I doesn´t always apply. I have had only one boy who became so aggressive during puberty he had to be separated from his ex-friend.
I had various combinations from two babies growing up together to old adult and baby, and they worked with the exception of that one crazy alpha male who also isn´t afraid to slightly bite people when he doesn´t like something, and watches fireworks from the top of his hiding instead of hiding inside like a normal pig.

One thing all nine piggies that owned me loved: FRESH, TENDER crabgrass or nutgrass or rye/fescue blend from the yard! Pick a bunch of it at least as large as your piggie is. What they don't eat, feels SO GOOD to lay on. Your little friend will find a place where they LOVE to sit and even nap on you. It's been my tummy, my shoulder, my chest, and BEHIND MY NECK!!! I've had piggies that "liked" classical music and "watching" football (cheering for the ball!). The more you handle and cuddle your pig, the happier they are, and some will become comfortable enough with you, they'll lay down and go sound asleep. Being prey animals, Guinea Pigs sleep with their eyes slightly open 99% of the time. If they close their eyes completely, you know it loves and trusts you totally. G. Pigs are also VERY smart. In a month's time they will learn opening the fridge door means "FOOD!" or rustling their hay bag or pellet container. Miss Snook'ums thought I was Guinea Pig-she'd sit on my shoulder and "groom" my hair like I was another pig. To "house-break" your piggie, the easiest for them and you is a BIG plastic dust-pan on the floor, with the same litter as in their house. Start with some litter they have puddled and pilled on and 75% fresh litter. "Snooking" around on the floor, they'll smell "themselves" in the dust-pan and investigate. You might have some little "pills" to pick-up for a while, but they are clean and odorless.
