  • St. John's Wort is a wild weed that grows in nearly every region. It is helpful for many common ailments and is especially supportive of the nervous system. It's incredible healing for burns and small wounds. Find out how to make an herbal tincture of this summer plant, as well as its benefits and uses.
    St. John's Wort is a bright red tincture that is useful for supporting nervous system issues such as stressful times, neuralgia, tension headache, and even topically for pain. It's one of my favorite go-to healing plants.
    St. John's Wort is often used by people who experience seasonal sadness in the wintertime, as it helps boost the emotions and helps with brain chemistry.
    Contraindications: St. John's Wort interacts with many different drugs and pharmaceuticals, so be sure to do your research before using St. John's Wort if you are on medication or pregnant/nursing. Avoid if you are taking medication for mental health issues unless you get approval from your doctor.
    You can find out how to forage St. John's Wort on my Facebook page, Practical Herbs with Heidi in a video there. I'd love to have you join us, too!

    Hi can you use the st.john that sells at stores (usual for tea) or does it have to be the fresh plant? Thanks

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před 2 lety

      This is one herb best used fresh....but you can still use the dried herb and have plenty of benefits, especially in tea.

      Good news! If the quality is good, it's still great in herbal teas, and will support emotions. Don't use it with any kind of drug unless you make sure there are no interactions (anti-depressants, anxiety meds, especially).

    Hi Heidi, I am interested in this herb, and have a plant in my garden. It has the flower, the berry, and it's labeled "st. John's Wort", however, it does not have the red oil when rubbing on the flower or leaves. Also, it appears the leaves are more like shrubbery, not soft, as the ones you show in this video. I'd like to know if it's a hybrid, and if it's something to stay away from? Thanks!

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před 2 lety

      This is such a great question, and I'm so glad you asked. There are many species of Hypericum, and there are only a couple of medicinal species. Hypericum perforatum is the most common. If you don't see the red juice, then it's not a medicinal species, unfortunately.

      one of the dead giveaways for me to help identify is that if you pick one of the leaves and hold it up to the sun or any source of light. You should see a bunch of tiny black and white dots in the leaf. It's something only St Johns wort has and it's worked everytime for me.

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi, T! Herbalists do the process part all different ways, and to be honest, they're all fine. Personally, I prefer using a bit of gentle heat as I've found that helps the plants release their constituents more quickly....therefore, I'm a window person (not a south exposure---an east or west is best). Once the plants are processed, and you can tell by the way they look, then it's time to strain, bottle, and place in that cool, dark cupboard!

    Hi can you use pure alcohol that sells in pharmacy cause here whre i live the vodca only has 45% of alcohol...thanks

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před 2 lety

      No, please don't use that kind, as it's most likely rubbing alcohol (isopropyl). It's poisonous. 80 proof (40%) alcohol is just fine. :-)

  • @littlehouseinthebigwoods9968

    How much of this tincture do I take daily for anxiety and depression? Also how do I use the olive oil tincture versus the alcohol tincture?Thanks for the video :-)

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, Little House! :-) Remember: Herbs are NOT drugs and shouldn't be considered the same way. (Plus, herbalists aren't medical doctors...unless they are, but for most of us, no). So, for supporting the nervous system and perhaps helping lift the mood, a general suggestion, depending on the specific strength of the tincture might be 1/2 tsp or about 3 droppers full. It's best if you work with an herbalist near you to help with these conditions and always be sure to check for contraindications, as SJW has a HIGH number of herb-drug interactions. The olive oil herbal infusion is the base for making amazing salves for burns and wound healing. :-) ***The FDA is very firm about herbalists NOT using medical language or making medical claims, therefore it's difficult to answer a question like this on social media.

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před rokem

      Hi Evelyn, you make it the same way, only with about 1/3 of the herbs. The problem with the dried herb is it just isn't as strong as the fresh.

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před 3 lety

      Yep! That's all there is to it. The taste will be of the plant, but you'll also have the vodka "hotness" from the alcohol. Here's an article on tinctures for you: www.healingharvesthomestead.com/home/2017/8/9/tinctures-what-is-a-tincture-how-to-make-and-use-tinctures

      Hi, Shabnam, you can use vinegar (tart/sour) or glycerin (sweet) as substitutes, but you won't have nearly as strong of an extract. :-)

    OR.JUST LET IT SET OUT FOR NATERAL EVAPETATION OF THE ALCOHOL..
    For a non alcohol tinture.......

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před rokem

      Hi, John....It's VERY difficult to get all the alcohol out of the solution, although some say it's possible. I don't think so. You might want to consider making a glycerite with a decoction of the herbal tea. This will give you a nice balance between the extracts in the glycerine and the extract in the water and this will be alcohol free! :-) You shouldn't exceed 30% water in your glycerite, though for shelf stability.

    • @HeidiVillegas

      Stefka, did you use dried SJW? Or was it fresh? Dried won't turn red, as the active ingredient is not viable after it's dried. But fresh should have!

    The highest percentage of alcohol that I can get in my country (percentage, not proof) is 75% alcohol. Hoping it works with my tincture, because the alternative is... no St John's Wort tincture from my freshly harvested flowers and buds.

    • @yogilogan5505
      @yogilogan5505 Před 4 lety +1

      That's a good ratio. 75 percent alcohol is 150 proof. Just don't add extra water.

    • @HeidiVillegas
      @HeidiVillegas  Před 3 lety +1

      That's a pretty high proof, about 150, so that's fine. In fact, I use 80 proof often for most herbs, including SJW, and the tincture turns out great!
