    There wasn't really "controversy", it was just an angry and vocal minority of people being angry and needing to rant about it on the internet. The main thing was homophobia, and homophobia thinly disguised as them being upset that the story of these characters deviated from the game (which is a non-issue, because the guy that created the game co-wrote this episode). Similarly, some people were salty that the entire episode was Bill and Frank instead of Joel and Ellie. However, the vast majority of audiences loved this beautiful episode.
    It still blows my mind that we could fit so much emotion into a single episode of characters that we JUST MET. We got to spend so much time with their story, literally from beginning to end. It was such an incredibly well done episode, on both sides of the camera.

    7:28 Think back... The pancakes Sarah could not make because they had no mix. The Biscuits offered from the neighbors but was refused because Joel is on a diet. The raisin cookies that Sarah didn't like. And the Cake Joel forgot to bring. All could have infected them but did not.

    What I really like about this episode is that, even though this is probably the most the show deviates from the source material, it does so in a way that shows the writers really understand and respect the game. Bill is a foil to Joel in the game, he's rejected Frank as a liability and is warning of what Joel could become if he continues to be closed off to other people and only focused on survival. In the show he's still a foil except he's embraced Frank and is a positive example of the life Joel could lead if he realizes there are more important things than survival.

      Amazingly put 👌 i loved Bill's letter and the message he had there. We didn't know the game, so for us this was just perfect.
      It's great to know that even though it's different from the game, it's still a loved episode by game players and lovers.

    29:03 Rule #32 (if you know you know). Bill & Frank an epic Love Story we didn't know we needed. Thank you HBO & Naughty Dog. Bill knew how to Survive. Frank knew how to Live. 33:03 Frank had ALS. 36:45 What makes this scene more beautiful is in the Show's Universe the Same Sex Marriage Law was never passed. So Bill & Frank are sticking it to the Man one last time.

    You can be a ‘survivalist’, prepaid for tragedy, protect your family, and also have a social life, and be successful and happy at the same time. The key is balance. There’s nothing wrong with being a little prepared as long as you don’t let it absorb your life and alienate you from the world. I have property, and I would consider myself prepared but I also have family, and friends, and I enjoy farming which is a big part of it, being self sustainable. 😎
    When it comes to Frank and Bill, I don’t see why people make a big deal about them being gay men. Even if you don’t like that thing, it’s about 2 strangers coming together and having a beautiful relationship in a would falling apart. The story would be the same if it was 2 women, or a man and a woman.

  • @clover2739
    @clover2739 Před 7 měsíci +6

    It’s interesting because this episode deviated from the game, game Bill is alive and is very bitter and cold and is completely alone after losing Frank, him and Ellie really do not get along and it’s more of a warning to Joel what he become if he pushes people away since they’re both so similar. Even though it ends sadly in the show, Bill and Frank still lived the best they could’ve probably out of anyone, they lived relatively long lives and were happy and Bill decided to let someone in, so in the show with his letter he leaves it’s more the opposite since it’s more of a message to Joel that even though it’s tough and there’s more to lose, letting people in can make you happier since you aren’t only just surviving but you’re living as well.
    It’s why I love Bill and Frank because Bill knows how to Survive but Frank showed him what it’s like to live. Even the brother in this reaction would say stuff like ‘what’s the point?’ ‘There’s no reason for that, they can’t reproduce’ which is kind of that kind of black and white attitude whereas living isn’t just about that which is what Frank shows. The sister tends to get the emotional side straight away with knowing that Frank is a romantic so even if it’s pointless he would still want to get married, because those things matter to him since he still wants to live his life and not only just survive. There’s no hate or judgement when I say this! It’s just interesting because it’s similar to Tess and Joel, people view things differently and I think having both sides as a pair is a good balance

    First two episodes had me going " Wow, it's the game but better!" , this episode had me going " Wow, that's a MAJOR deviation from the game - but it's BETTER!" Game-wise "Bill's Town" is just an action shooter with elements of story and lore, by going off-game this episode the showrunners proved the game adaptation model could work by eliminating gameplay in favor of story and intent. I did miss the nail bombs though.

    such a beautiful episode. I love all of the small moments that are showing joel is caring for ellie: giving her his jacket to keep her warm, making sure she’s eating, explaining what happened, not wanting her to see the skeletons, and then helping her buckle her seatbelt. It’s so sweet.
    Also, I found that letter from bill to be so moving. you can tell that joel really took it to heart because he and bill are so similar. for bill, his purpose was frank. for joel, his purpose is now ellie. bill was just surviving before he met frank-frank taught him how to live. there’s no point in living without love.
    bill and frank’s story encompasses the whole point of “the last of us”-keeping love and connection alive in the midst of tragedy and darkness. it’s just so impactful!

    Not that it's really relevant, but I've been extremely alone and isolated for about 5 years now. I interact with a therapist and maybe a gas station clerk once a month, but being alone doesn't take an apocalypse. Though it sometimes feels like I'm in one. All my family is dead and I have no friends. I do have two cats...I sing to them lol

    Cumberland Farms is a chain of shopping marts in ... well, Massachusetts, at least, not sure elsewhere. I actually grew up an hour west of Boston so what's crazy about this show is a bunch of it is around places I grew up in.
    Although some of the landscape betrays that it was actually filmed in Canada heh. Like, some of the mountains you see early in the episode? Yeah, eastern Massachusetts doesn't have that; it's pretty flat and close to sea level.

    Some of the criticism of this episode came from those who had played the game and were disappointed in the changes the series made, mostly having to do with the fact that in the game Joel and Ellie meet up with Frank and they missed that interaction, which is fair. But a lot of the criticism came from those who objected to the "woke" depiction of Bill and Frank's relationship, which just misses the entire point of this episode and says more about those who objected than it does about the quality of the storytelling of this episode.

      Woke? lmao. It's just a gay relationship and most of those "critics" are just hate to see anything gay but only when it includes two dudes; but they are somehow okay with two women doing it. They cannot evaluate the story, dialogues, acting, art direction, details, use of camera, angles, sound, music and all other things that makes the show. What they have missed that they were already gay in the game as well. If they ever able to think while brainlessly shooting brainless zombies, they could have seen that in the game too.

    • @clover2739
      @clover2739 Před 7 měsíci +4

      It’s hilarious how people say that they made their relationship woke… as if Bill wasn’t gay in the game either, like people seem to deliberately act dense about that because it was pretty clear in context that he’s gay and Frank was his partner, we actually just got to see Frank this time and made their relationship sweeter rather than ending messily. Of course it would’ve been cool to see Ellie and Bill interact like with the game but I think this makes sense for the tv adaptation

      Being a person who has loved this game since it came out, yes, I was looking forward to a Bella Ramsey / Nick Offerman showdown between Ellie and Bill. However, not having that, I think the writters gave me the best story I could've asked for. I now have two versions of a story I love. The one where Bill turns out bitter and an the one where he learned how to live while teaching Frank how to survive. There is nothing I would change about this episode. Nothing I would change about the series, period. But thank you for explaining it in such a great way.
