• DCS AV-8B NA Harrier T... - Hry
for the awls the vertical line/bar should indicate the runway and not your position relative to the runway and we think it is a bug and has been reported to razbam.
nice video as usual
Such is the nature of covering early access, Unfortunately the NATOPS manual is unclear about operation and the pocket guide quotes it. We'l have to see if it changes in the future
Yeah, any other ILS system has the localizer (vertical) bar/needle working the other way around, i.e. if it's right of the FPM you need to turn right for line-up.
Yeah has to be a bug. There's no way you fly 'to' the glideslope bar and 'away' from the runway bar. Watching him fly that approach was really messing with my head.
Edit....... As of the 15.12.17 the bug is corrected. Now you can follow the needles. :-) Thank God it's a bug. Every flight sim is follow the needles. I'm sitting there thinking this is bad. An accident waiting to happen. Going against previous training. Very Nice Video Redkite. Subscribed.
Yep, fly the needles:) nice vid, I need to get this sim...
Tip for Glide Slope management, in the video on approach the ground speed is 222kts, a simple formula is “Halve the GS, add a zero” to get the rate of decent to maintain the glide slope. Ie 220/2= 110, add a zero = 1100fpm. This will help maintain a 3degree slope. As you configure and slow down, keep using the formula to stay on slope. Don’t fly on the numbers though, fly the needles. The formula helps give you a rough idea what attitude/decent rate to set. Works IRL too.
Best tutorials. Unlike some of the others I've watched , no ego. I think you understand this is simply a simulation om a computer.
Thank you
Doesnt matter that these videos are old, they are gold! So relaxing and easy to follow. Thank you!
RedKite: You have the gift of teaching Sir. Thank You.
Thanks Trout!
Starting to ge back into the Harrier from the F-18 Hornet - This Series is awesome !
I love your videos. You have a great way of explaining all of the systems that have made the transition to the Harrier much easier. I am glad to hear that the bug has been fixed. My first attempt at AWLS was in worse conditions and not very successful before it was fixed. Luckily you can stop the harrier and gently put it down off field.
Can totally relate with that sigh just before touchdown. Awesome videos on the Harrier!
Very good and enjoyable tutorial. I'm going to strap into my Harrier now and go through some of this myself. Thanks for taking the time to put up this video.
You're welcome :)
Excellent tutorial Kite thank you. Helped me greatly on this journey of learning more advanced aircraft!
Thank you very much!! Tutorials are very welcome from the Harrier!!
Many thanks for tutorial series, they are a huge help!
Love the way you do these tutorials!! I hope you do all aircraft in DCS !!
hi,
great tutorial.
and thanks for the AWLS channel list, couldn't find it elsewhere
greetings
That was great. Thanks for the info. Excellent flying too :)
Thank you, that was a useful and instructive bit of video :) Subbed so I can come back to this in future.
Excellent tutorial (aside from the needle bug.) Please note: the center display will turn off after entering Tacan information although Tacan does NOT turn off. Just the information on the center display. That had confused me when I first flew the Harrier. Since it is still in early release, I thought it was a bug. It's not.
Man you rock. Thank you so much for all your videos.
Brilliant video, as always. Thanks!
your videos are so handy and helpful many thanks for taking the time
Nice tutorial, enjoyed!
If you select TRUE heading you can use CRS (Course Line) on both TACAN and AWLS. It's very useful and helpful. Works only for TRUE heading. Otherwise course line is being set for waypoint.
Excellent video thanks for your tutorial.
Nicely done! Learned a lot :)
Thanks. Appreciate your efforts.
Impressive piece of flying sir.
Thank you! was also pretty stressful :)
Noted the sigh of relief after that bad vis landing.....lol
haha yes, that was my 4th recorded attempt, on the first i simply missed the runway, 2nd and 3rd i wasn't happy with the line up, and had pretty large corrections when i saw the runway, they would of been an aborted landing if not for the harriers vstol ability.
Just Amazing you have such skill, vids are so inspiring. Many thanks
Well i thought that was great thank you very much i wouldn't have been that calm in the last landing lol
Cracking tutorial, thanks mate
nicely done! Especially speaking through it in 0 vis haha :D thanks for the tutorial
Let's just say it took more than a few takes to get that :)
Very nicely done.
Awesome dude.
Just for info the vertical line is the Localizer which is the centre line of the rwy. Horizontal line as you know is the Glide slope. And the bug has been fixed now so you now turn toward the Localizer. Hope you don't mind me just pointing that out.
Great job landing in that bad weather
awesome! Thank you!
Great video - thanks.
Awesome, thanks!
Don't forgot about your air speed. Given you're a harrier you can always slow it all down and make use of nozzle angle to main descent control.
If i'm honest i've hardly got any experience doing conventional landings in harriers :) Vtol is far too much fun and i wanted to avoid lingering around in the air for ages prior to the runway as i fumble for a nice stol speed whilst wrangling the awls.
Thank you.
This plane is awesome and I will purchase it very later on. By the way, you're a great instructor.
Awesome, thank you!
@@RedKiteRender Redkite - I hear you are the best instructor for DCS but are these videos outdated and so I should look elsewhere such as deephack, grim reapers or pukin dog even though word on the street appears conducive to a consensus of you holding the title of best DCS youtube instructor. Thanks for the advice.
@@idnintel I would caution you against GR as their content is often rushed and poorly researched / explained.
Chucks guides (pdf users guides) are a great place to start, there's many great other creators, don't shy away from smaller channel's they're often better than the big ones who create tutorials as an afterthought.
Over the years I've gained the proud mantle of best creator of tutorials, however that comes at the price i cannot create as many, never mind keep up to date with everything. And, the Harrier being my first series the quality is less than more recent videos. They should largely still be accurate, but smaller details may change, in particular the LITENING pod has been reworked totally.
@@RedKiteRender thank you very much for your reply!
Using the "STOVL" HUD mode will make things easier for you. Also, try to reduce speed much earlier, and maintain a constant speed. At 10degrees angle of attack, you should be around 130 knots with auto flaps and gear down. Try to be in that configuration by 1000 feet. The less changes you need to make at the end of your approach, the better.
Hi, thanks for this video.
Please you confirm that the waypoints work fine with the Harrier of DCS ?
I have DCS 1.5.8 Open-Beta but with mission editor impossible to use few waypoints, a mistake from me ?
Thanks in advance, Skull.
I've experienced no issues with waypoints, there is a limit of i think 25? total waypoints for the system itself though.
The Landing Glide Slope indicator thingy is not very intuitive. You had to "chase" the indicator to maintain vertical glide slope but then you had to "run from" the alignment indicator to stay in line with the runway. Most aircraft that I've flown have indicators that you "chase". If the line is to the left, you move to the left to correct it. If the line is above, then you climb to meet the line.
But of course, I didn't see your post regarding this very issue until after I posted !
Yeah i agree its counter intuitive, its the opposite in the F14 or JF17 in DCS for example.
This and aerial refueling are the hardest things.
I think it’s fair to say your bad weather approach was not quite a stable one. This is a great series Redkite, always very informative. Do you plan on refreshing them if the AV8B ever gets to release status?
Great video. But i have a problem. I tried this on the same airfield. But i dont get the vertical bar. AWL and TCN is on Marker is on the EHSD. But i dont get the directional line (vertical). Do i need to turn something else on that either isnt in the video or i missed??
Have you enabled AWLS on the EHSD? other issue is you'l need to be close to the airbase to get the steering line, use tacan to close in then switch over, ILS systems require an approch from a specific angle, if you're not geting the line you may need to roughly line up with the airbase first.
RedKite i tried later with another and got the lines. Dont know what was wrong the first time
Excellent video.. Can't seem to get the Tacan working though.. Plug in the Airbase 44X but doesn't give me anything. Is it because I'm using Steam version?
Have you made sure you've pressed the ON button on the UFC and enabled TCN on the HSI? Shouldn't matter what version you're using.
RedKite Yeah I followed your video to the letter. It is a bit odd as I'm able to use it with your practice mission - Leisure flight at dusk. Plug in to a TACAN enabled base and voila. But can't seem to get it to work if I create my own mission!?
I've not run into that one myself, that's odd, are you on the beta build, things have been a little strange recently.
When you turn off A/A, the fact that there is no change in the UI is a bug/not implemented, correct?
There is a : that marks if it is selected for any of the options
Does AWLS rely on a TACAN signal? We were trying to get it to work on the Sochi airfield, but we never got a signal.
At the moment it only supports airbases listed in the manual on the pre-made channels
RedKite Well Sochi is listed in the manual, I think channel 12. I tried it on Nellis, and it didn't work there either. Works perfectly fine on Kutaisi and Batumi, which is why I think it's to do with whether there's a TACAN station. I reported it to Razbam, so we'll see if it's a bug, or if something is missing. My buddy and I tried it both in multiplayer and single, and both had the same results with both versions.
Nice tutorial. How did you set up tacan for kc-130?
I set it up for a KC-135, the KC-130 currently does not support it. Within the mission editor you can look at the advanced waypoint actions, that allows you to configure the tacan frequency in use.
I know how to set for kc-135. But I can't refuel av8b on kc-135, just on kc130. As much as kc135 has refueling probe for f-15.
I saw that you were refueling from kc-130 and also had tacan for it how did you do that?
ah it was kc135. My bad, thanks anyway.
Technically... you can refuel from any tanker (i've a video: 'how to air to air refuel') on that matter, but it's a bit silly :)
Hey, I downloaded your harrier training mission. When I try and do air to air the tanker will not reply. Arco is on 251 and I select that but doesn’t talk back. Could you help?
I believe only simple radio coms are enabled with the harrier at the moment, set in the options
RedKite ah that would make sense. I’ll give that a blast
Isn't that vertical bar confusing? Coming from just about every other module- you should be flying *towards* the bars, not countering them. Particularly considering we are flying towards the horizontal bar.
This will take practise I think- first with a runway in sight and then without. Cheers for the videos RedKite, subscribed and I'll watch for more. :)
(Incidentally- do you know if we can input coordinates yet?)
At present we cannot input manual co-ordinates, as for the ils/awls it's possibly inverted, we're not sure, if it changes i'l be uploading a new video to reflect the changes.
Again, no Tarawa on the AWLS? Shame. Good Video. This is solid learning.
She's had Tacan added since this video has been recorded, though mission makers will have to manually set it to transmit.
yea i really hope that localizer needle is in fact backwards and it gets changed, because that's going to throw me off so hard if it stays the same...
How do you set waypoints?
Waypoints can only be set in the editor at this time, manual waypoints will be possible later on as early access develops.
How do we set waypoints?
At the moment only possible within the mission editor, i'l cover manual waypoints when they're added
RedKite thank you!
You have to wonder why combat aircraft do not utilize a auto pilot for gs all way down to F.A.P ( final approach fix ) this would be less stressful for the pilot as all they would have to is fly the final say 3-4 miles by hand.
Many do (even carrier aircraft), However the ap modes in the harrier are quite simple.
Let’s hope this doesn’t give Tilly ideas for missions!
hehehe
Grazie mille, peccato che non parli italiano !!!!!
Please edit the video to remove erroneous explanation of localizer indication.
For the time being the video is correct, when there is an update to the harrier i'l produce a video to reflect the changes.
disregard, it's a clock :/
This video could have been 45 seconds long
