- This is the first video with my new mic which I got to record my Project Horizons audiobook project, so, I hope you think it's good. So, now I have equipment, a decent recording booth (which I didn't use for this vid since it was a million degrees and I don't have ac so it gets sweltering in there) now all I gotta do is learn how to not make little wet mouth sounds. Maybe I'll gargle desiccant or hold cotton balls in my mouth for an hour before recording. Give me suggestions.

Boulder Media (Ireland) was tasked by HASBRO to make ONLY the 3D Feature Movie.
It was specifically requested that they did NOT set up any "specific" ideas for the future of the G5 franchise in the movie, because HASBRO had no idea who will do the "series" [only that it could NOT be Boulder Media, because they are oversaturated with other long_term projects].
-> This is back in the "times before" Covid, when it was supposed to go on theaters (not on a streaming service like NETFLIX).
After the (unexpected) extremely well reception and good scores (both from critics and the public in general watching it on NETFLIX); the "plans" for the future series were speed up to "not lose the momentum".
The first "Chapter" (series of episodes) of "Make Your Mark" (what was actually remade as the first special) should had come at best at the end of summer 2022 [like... right now or next month]; but instead a made up "2D series" was requested A.S.A.P. [done overseas] while the first special was rushed (all "quality controls" & "power limiters" on "ideas for shortcuts" removed).
Boulder Media gave up ALL the stuff they had to Atomic Cartoons (Canada), as soon as they knew that HASBRO had selected that studio for the "3D" stuff.
Atomic Cartoons uses software that is INCOMPATIBLE with the original "rigs" & "puppets" from Boulder Media (so they had to "translate" everything first).
-> This slowed down the pre-production because the "flow of the work" Boulder had setup between the different stages of animation (done by different people specialized on each step) was completely missing in the system of Atomic Cartoons [who instead chop an episode into pieces, each team doing a "block" and then reassembling everything in a whole episode.
Atomic Cartoons is hiring ALL kinds of animators since last year (with a new, massive request for more qualified people on lighting & texture done just after the NETFLIX release & critics done about the special "Make Your Mark"). They are aware of their weakneses and are trying actively to patch them up with money (yay!).
I hate to use the term but, my lord, you really spilled the tea here dude. Bravo. This is really interesting. So, some of the lower quality aspects are a result of things done as quick as possible to capitalize on their success, and because of chaos involving the studio change, if I understand you correctly. Hopefully, that also means the wonky script was a product of a whole chapter being cannibalized into the special. If so, maybe once they get their stuff together at the studio and they start releasing normal episodes the writing will be more put together too.
@@wubway I learned all of this from credited sources (interviews to the Director & staff of Boulder Media, done by the editorialists of EquestriaDaily; plus Twitter posts from animators).
But you could already kinda "see" each of the individual scenes of different episodes suddendly popping in the special [it was not really "pacing issues" (or lack of "integration" in the plotlines) in the special, since each episode it was based upon was doing it "ok" on each of their own stories].
-> The original writters & story editors (including G.M.Berrow) worked hard on those first episodes... only for the executives to overrule their scripts & teleplays [giving orders to the animators directly].
Not even the Director of Animation at Atomic Cartoon should be held "responsable" (was only following orders); as this was exclusively the fault of the greedy, hungry "shareholders" of the HASBRO company.
The good news is that they are now "satisfied" with the products (toy line releases) alongside the "Tale Your Tale" shorts on CZcams [so they are allowing the necesary delays on the "stage 3" production pipeline for the 3D NETFLIX episodes].
-> Expect another mediocre "first episodes" (animation wise, the script & narrative should be fine) of the series, followed later next year by Boulder_levels of quality [scaled down in complexity and detail because it is not a feature movie, not lacking anymore the "good taste" & "kino" essence of "A New Generation"].
Bonus Track: The GAME (aka: "The Season 1 Gala" event).
Multi_plattform 3D games usually take between 18 and 24 months (between it is requested by the client [HASBRO] and its public release).
-> It was requested on the same week the movie "A New Generation" was released on NETFLIX [even before it stopped being the # 1 (non_series) Animation ].
The (mane) reason Sprout is "missing" on "Tell Your Tale" is because his "overarc" storyline was EXCISED from the timeline (kinda like it happened with Argyle´s "doomsday" persona for the final movie].
This was something the main developer of the game (who by the way has being already a talented 3D brony animator for years) could not be informed/updated about [because his N.D.A. contract was a "one-shot" and the legalese explicitly did not allowed him to contact HASBRO (or vice-versa) to "discuss" anything].
"Maretime Bay´s Day" was supposed to come near the end of the first block of the 23_episode "Season 1" [fitting about the same as "Winter Wrap Up" did on "Friendship is Magic"].
(speculation) -> The "Shadowy Alicorn" was supposed to go in the same "escalation progresssion" than how Faust originally planned for Discord [as the end of Season 1, posibly "emergency series finale"].
Everything's fine I watch the show and everything's fine it's like when everyone said that the 1998 Godzilla movie was bad but no it was good so much that they had to put out a TV show for it so if you are going to hate a movie that was or a TV show that was going on for like millions of years then f*** yourself I don't know why everyone hates movies these days

Nice comments. I myself am of the opinion that 'Make Your Mark' is subpar, but not in the sense that it will never get better. It's sort of like a child doing something wrong and you teach them to do better next time. I am holding on to the hope that the series will do better when it comes out. Some people were also turned off by the new voice cast. Me? Not really since I had already been watching 'Tell Your Tale' before the special was released so I was used to the new voices. The worst examples are Hitch and Izzy, and it isn't the voice actors fault. The main fault is that those two are not WRITTEN correctly. In the movie, Izzy was quirky, lovable, and not afraid to show her sensitive side open up about her fears; while in MYM, Izzy has reverted into a stupid, annoying, mindless gag dispenser. In the movie, Hitch is confident, serious, competent in his duties, respected by ponies around him, one who can be confided in, and unafraid to change his beliefs when challenged; while in MYM he is annoyingly cheerful, has little true confidence, is an incompetent sheriff, is not respected, dismissive of Zipp's suspicions, and laughing stock of the Mane 5. Those were my main issues.
Yeah. What I think truly made FIM was the characters. I talked about them in my video about diversity if you care to go watch that part. But to summarize, the characters all had some fundamental personality trait to define their role, not just in their elements but in who they were as individuals to make them distinct, and then they had certain sub traits to make them contrast with and relate to each other member of the mane six. That way, they can play off eachother, which means the writers have a lot to work with when creating character interactions. While the mane 5 have distinctive qualities, they don't seem to have that kind of chemistry and depth. I will however defend Izzy in that I think a lot of her vulnerability came from her loneliness and being new to having friends. And, so far, she hasn't had much to be vulnerable about, as in their friendship seems to be pretty secure. There was the T.U.E.S Day short where Izzy was a bit more insecure and vulnerable because she felt like her friends didn't want to celebrate with her and I thought that was pretty good. Other than that, I totally agree that Hitch was butchered. His VA doesn't sound anything like James Marsden. I don't like Izzy's new voice mostly just because of how good Kimiko Glenn was as her, nigh irreplaceable. She's voiced in cartoons before so I don't see why they didn't keep her. HotDiggityDemon said it perfectly, cartoon characters ARE their voices, so if you have to replace a VA you need to put a lot of care into finding a replacement with a similar voice and they totally screwed up Hitch, Izzy less so, but there is a noticeable difference. Kimiko sounded endearingly silly, but the new VA kinda sounds like a pre-teen girl who smokes a pack a day.
I wholly agree with you. It's a little bland all around. I didn't hate it, I still feel optimistic about the series. 4 more weeks before the first episode if I saw right so I'm still hyped, though this special definitely dulled my excitement.
I think the number one aspect they should refine is the character traits, everyone seems pretty one-dimensional here and at worst they feel like completely different characters from the movie, which is a really big deal for both children and adults. People look for emotional connections which is lacking here. After that they should focus on the individual stories, pacing, and then the lore. I'm willing to wait for the lore, just get the personalities and stories right first. :) ... But I still want that lore eventually. XD
Once those are more up on the level, I'd like to see improvements to animation, visuals and sound design. I checked out the studio's work before this special and they hadn't done nearly any 3D animation before, which didn't spark much confidence originally, I actually expected less so I'm thinking they actually spent some time getting up to speed. I'm hoping this also means that they'll improve fast as they're doing a lot of refining up front... We'll see.
I have no doubt that the overall quality will become better over time, but we'll see if they can improve fast enough. Also this being a company with many people working on multiple different areas, every area will improve independent from others on their own, I'm just wishing whoever is leading this project would put their focus on areas that I view as higher priority.
Good video, I really hope the writers start to work better with the show's potential and plot. While this wasn't the best especially in comparison to g4, I still have hope that itll get better

According to the comics, twilight actually created the crystals, because opaline, the dark alicorn, at that time a unicorn, stured up chaos between the tribes, causing something terrible to happen. I like the theory that opaline tampered with the crystals to make them more sensitive, I was thinking that to.
Holy shit! Back in my ANG Rewrite I actually predicted something like that happening. It was a shot in the dark so jeez. Didn't think I'd be close at all.

. Everything makes sense once you include the "cloaking barrier" Twilight placed on the 3 crystals (to "hide" them from divination magic in general & from Opaline specifically).
. The barrier is attuned to ONLY *allow* "Earth Ponies", "Pegasi" & "Unicorns" to be able to see/interact with the "Unity Crystals" ; while it excludes any other "sapient creatures" (from mundane cows & donkeys, to chimeras like griffons & even alicorns).
. Twilight never considered that the crystals would get separated and spread onto 3 different locations [accidentally expanding the range & effect of this "cloak", covering an entire region of Equestria].
-> This created an "island" within the continent that was efectively SEALED from the rest of the planet [until now].

It is unclear "how" this barrier works.
[It could be that]:
. a) It "removes the knowledge" about any "contents" inside it as soon as it is generated on the minds of other creatures inside it (an anti_memetic effect); so they can never "learn" about its existence. This also makes them to become "lost" in the wilderness until they manage to get out of its area of influence.
. b) It actively "pushes out" non_pony creatures inteligent enough to speak (like the barrier of Cadance & Shining Armor in the FiM_S2_finale did against changelings), so they can never get close enough to any of the areas of the 3 cities to "discover" the pony populations.

. As soon as magic returned to the areas of Maretime Bay, Zephyr Heights & Briddlewood; the "barrier" was broken.
. The egg of Sparky was likely floating in the middle of the sea, getting "stuck" between sea currents (trying to push it towards the land) & the barrier (pushing against).
-> Maretime Bay was likely originally a "terminal port" for the sea comerce with other kingdoms because of its proximity to other landmasses.
In my opinion, I never thought it was straight up "bad" it has some rough spots here and there, animation clipping, some story beats being a bit off, character designs...*Alicorn flashbacks* but this is only just the first episode, and it's never going to have the same level of visuals/animation to the movie, but there is potential for this show to grow and become better. Not every show starts out with it being the best of its time, they all start out with some things that need improvement, and that's what the rest of the show is for. So we shouldn't go judging it yet because we've seen only the first episode, we have a bunch of chapters to witness and watch as they improve overtime. And maybe by the time we get to the finale, it will look 10x better than the first episode.

I’ll admit at this point, in ways I prefer the tell your tale style than the make your mark animation. The animation in make your mark isn’t as good at the movie either…they’re stiff and there isn’t enough background. I don’t main the 3D models but oof x.x Improvement is needed.
There's also the matter of how the characters move. Nearly everyone seems to be moving too slow, even when they are supposed to be running: there doesn't feel like there is a sense of urgency to their movement; as though the animators had spent too much time working on making sure that the rigging was semi-decent and didn't bother to try and simplify things in order to make the characters _FEEL_ like they are moving as fast as the Ponies from G4. That was one of the benefits of the 2D style that the 3D style is lacking in, where everyone here seems like they are moving at only one exact speed no matter what it is they are trying to do.

I'm trying to think of a way to do it. What I really would hope for is audience suggestions that I could turn into episodes. I got one and wrote something for it, and idk why it has taken me so long to upload it, I just have to edit it. But maybe what I'll do is go story beat by story beat, episode by episode, to create an alternate storyline for the show. What would really be cool is if it could get turned into a webcomic, but I don't have any art skills nor money to commission anyone. But I've noticed you watching a a bunch of my videos so since there's a demand I'll happily start brainstorming something because it is a project I've wanted to do. I really appreciate knowing people enjoy what I make.
