Stories don't need to be "good" to be good
This is the worst thumbnail I've made yet.
To elaborate based on some comments I've gotten. When I talked about critics at the start, I don't mean to say things that aren't corporate are above criticism or that they shouldn't be held to any standard of quality. They aren't, and they should be if you are charged to engage with them. What I was getting at, and probably wasn't clear enough about, is that individual creators deserve to be given the courtesy of constructive criticism, otherwise the critic is merely a heckler. Also, the constructive critic should bear in mind the creator might have done something they dislike intentionally because of differing tastes, and not simply rule that as bad writing. For example, I think Digital Circus is obnoxious, and the character movements are way too over the top. That's not a failure on the creators, that's my personal taste.

    The Drinker portion of the video just felt like a lot of meat riding ngl. “Let the smaller guys alone”. Ah yes leave the millionaire author/youtuber alone because clearly the manly Drinker “can’t take it”. I think it’s all fair game. If Drinker can tear into someone’s work, the same applies to him. That’s the type of energy he puts out in the internet and that’s the kind of energy that he gets back. Perfect example is his trailer for his upcoming movie. Even his fans in the comment section hate it. Drinker is already surrounded by yes men that praise anything he does (Eric July, Nerderotic, etc) so to say he’s off limits because he’s not a corporate titan is just blatant favoritism. Telling people to only criticize big companies and authors is literally what an echo chambers is. Also, no, you don’t need to be a writer to give good criticism of a book. Yes James Tulio comes off as a bit smug, but so does Drinker. Both of them put on an act to be entertaining. And both are fair to criticize.

    • @wubway
      @wubway Před 13 dny

      @BenjiM514 I can see that, but that's genuinely what I believe and I'd say the same for any individual creator. It's the principle of it. I believe there should be a difference in how you handle a corporate product vs the work of an individual creator, and in this instance it was the Critical Drinker because it was his book. I'm not saying not to criticize him either, because his books are flawed. Dark Harvest was bland. The way he includes a clumsy, tactless sexual assault scenes is gross. And for what it's worth I don't like when he makes digs at other youtubers or when he kept mentioning Sidney Sweeney's boobs. But you can call out those writing and videomaking failures without a whole section talking about what makes him an unlikable person because it's irrelevant, and because he is an individual creator he deserves the courtesy of constructive criticism. But I should have been clearer about what I meant in the video. As I said in a different comment, I rushed that segment because I didn't wanna harp on about youtubers to make my point about criticism, but all I really did was fail to be clear enough with it.

    I can't say I really agree with your take here, I do think that reviewers can get very stuck in a certain lens of analysis for determining how good a piece of media is. However, that is a reviewer's job. It is not the job of the reviewer to understand every reason people may enjoy a thing but rather to bring their particular view on media to the things they are criticizing. Speaking of James Tullos because I enjoy his videos despite not always agreeing with his reviews, he brings a consistent lens of analysis to every book that he reviews which focuses on the extent to which the story innovates within its genre and constructs believable events that let a critical reader become immersed. This analysis does not reflect the way everyone reads books but does reflect a very common critical standard of "good writing" and as such is a metric that his fans (me included) find useful as a perspective. So like, I don't think that there is a problem with a reviewer critiquing a story this way.

    • @wubway
      @wubway Před 14 dny

      @@CrystalLily1302 I probably wasn't as clear as I should have been since I didn't want to harp on any specific people and devolve into what could be seen as taking people down (I still feel I might have gone too far), but when I talked about reviewers, specifically James, what I was trying to get at wasn't that reviews or critique are bad. As I said, I like watching reviews and I make them myself, because as a writer I believe that well done reviews are helpful ways to learn how to improve your craft. I was trying to say that reviews that focus solely on some metric of good or bad miss a key point of why stories exist: to be enjoyed. Now I get that individual critics bring their specific tastes to the table, their audience is of people with similar or same tastes and will enjoy a good takedown that speaks on their behalf. I like that. But even so, when you are dealing with the work of an individual you shouldn't go in with the same intensity you would with a corporate product, because that doesn't help a writer improve, it's just demoralizing. And you shouldn't try and assassinate their character because you dislike their work, that's just plain unethical. You should also acknowledge that your tastes are different and what is unappealing to you may appeal to them and will manifest in how they write. Good critique should be constructive, and help a writer improve on their next project, warning your likeminded audience against something doesn't change that aspect of critical ethics. And that comes down to my ultimate point, just because you think it is bad doesn't make it bad, and you can critique something without making a binary determination. Say what you think is good and what you think is bad, and then what your verdict is. It warns people, and gives the creator something to learn from. Opening the video with "there is lots to mock here, but first lets talk about what a jackass the author is" is just uncool. If you care to, compare it to Saberspark talking about Hazbin Hotel, which started as a youtube series, where he goes in detail about all the ways the main character's relationship with her dad could be significantly improved without ever denigrating the show. Then compare it to how he ripped Leo and Layla to shreds, and talked about how scummy PragerU is as a company, with the same level of tact. If I ever get my writing off the ground, I know who I'd rather have review it. Still, ultimately I failed to be clear in the video, which is my own failure as a critic of those critics, and so I'll try to learn from it.

      @@wubway Okay yeah I can see the point you're making, I also disagree with the idea that one shouldn't be mean when reviewing art made by a person. I think that if there is art that you think is bad made by a person who has opinions you think are bad I think it's fine in the context of youtube "review content" to engage with that context as it does provide a framing device for your viewers to understand the political bias of the writer so they can see how it influences the work. I also just think that people who have 1 million sub channels don't need to be treated with kid gloves, like that's a public figure. If you think that a public figure is worthy of derision then I am fine with you deriding that figure, wether or not I agree with your assessment.

But she is full of so much excitement and stress. She cannot do it. Zipp herself doesn't realize that's the reason. But Pipp slowly does. She calls her new friends to help. Sunny thinks she should use her skates to give her a better running start. But it failes. Then Zipp would turn to hitch I'm not sure what he would do. So I will leave that part to you. Last but not least, we would have Izzy with the crazed idea of a catapult in order for zipp to get into the sky, and so she can learn to fly. She zooms into the sky and crashes into a clouds bank, which confuses Zipp since she is now stuck in a cloud. Meanwhile, Pipp is getting worried. Izzy gets the others in the airship from the rewrite movie, and Pipp uses cloud puff to find Zipp. Zipp frees herself, and her mouth drops at the sight of a palace made completely of clouds. It was completely abandoned She finds a large hall with stained glass windows, like in zephyr heights. One of them catches Zipp's eye. It was a halo of rainbow magic spreading across the land, just like the unity crystal did. The window next to it had a rainbow-dash cutie mark. Zipp races, throw the hall and take pictures of everything. Pipp appears to have a heart-to-heart conversation about Zipp's issue. The others show up in the airship. Izzy screaming we are coming zipp. The sight of all her friends coming to her rescue full Zip with a warming sense of calm. An for few brief moments she truly flew. Honestly, I don't think I'd concede those points about filler and violence, at least not for original FO:E (i do think they apply to other spin-offs, especially Project Horizons). Having both read it and listened to it a few times, I actually think the original is pretty tight and well calibrated. Every encounter pushes a character arc or plot point and the violence, while extreme, isn't actually described overly gratuitously, and often actually serves a purpose. I actually think FO: E is kind of a great Fallout story in terms of theme.

The best writing does all three, but sometimes it's fun to kick back and relax. But towards the start of FoE before Pip's quest against the Enclave, the Goddess, and Redeye all kick off she does some seemingly extraneous questing that I think puts a lot of people off since there isn't a steady forward progression to hook them. Stuff like going to clear Stable 24 with Calamity. That little arc 1) develops Pip by showing her as someone who helps random people even at great risk just like a Fallout protagonist, 2) develops Calamity by showing him as having a code of honor and being someone who will risk his life to help a stranger despite getting nothing out of it, 3) forges the bond between Pip and Calamity, 4) develops the world by showing a Stable-Tec experiment a la Fallout lore with a MLP lore twist to it, and 5) sets up Pip rescuing the slaves from Old Appaloosa because she is in New Appaloosa's good graces, and it also gives that action consequences because after sending the slaves to New Appaloosa they get mad at her. BUT... I know all that with hind sight and insights that come from lots of deep engagement with writing as a craft. Your average reader just read through chapters where Pip got enslaved, went to Ponyville, fought raiders at the library, then went to Ironshod, and now sees her go to some stable on a literal side quest. Yes, that is her intro to the wasteland and character building, and yes she meets watcher and she frees Derpy who both become major characters, and yes she gets her signature weapon. Still, without hindsight that only comes chapters later, this seems like filler that can prevent readers from getting immersed in the story. I attribute it in part to stylistic choice as an emulation of the games, and just because Kkat chose for the story to play out in a slower burning natural progession as opposed to something more flashy and hooking. Nevertheless, making such a decision can put readers off. It's a compromise between authorial vision and appeal. I don't have much of a conclusion so... yeah.

      @@wubway Yeah, I think it's tricky. Cause I agree, if you watch a character go off on a side quest, it can definitely seem like filler initially. And then it's kind of a matter of whether or not that side-off is engaging. But the flip side, I think, is that when a lot of people say a story felt "rushed," what they're actually describing is a lack of those little tangents that give the relationships, character arcs, and motivations the time they need to emerge more naturally. I think Stable 24 is a great example, cause Kkat could totally have skipped it and used the same justification for Calamity tagging along (that he felt guilty over shooting LP) to Appleoosa, but because we had that chapter devoted to LP processing that and learning about Calamity's character, it feels a lot more natural when he inserts himself into her quest to find Velvet. And I actually always thought Kkat did a really good job using side tangents like that. But I gotta say I appreciate the video. No one I know has read FOE, and its surprisingly hard to find literary discussions about it.

    Could you explore the relationship that the new main 5 would have between eachother? I love how you developed sprout in your new gen rewrite. In the new cartoon a lot of the characters are too much of the same thing. I also want to see some of your episode ideas for the main 5 growing as friends. Do you think that learning more about twilight and her friends will cause them to doubt themselves? I think it would be cool for them to also learn about the pillars as well at some point and learn that they can be protectors in their own way. Lastly, I really enjoyed this video and also how you characterized pipp in your new gen rewrite, it was so refreshing to see her relationship with her people portrayed as the best way for her to connect with the them without upsetting her mother and being secure in her position. Keep up the good work, congratulations on the screenwriting degree 🎉

    I love this and want to see the game remade with this! That said, I would like to see one gameplay change: enemy camps. When you take out an enemy camp the enemies in that area no longer spawn thus allowing you to feel as if you had an actual change in affect in the game. Going to Atown and hear how much safer they feel and how they have you to thank for it. The camps could even have their own mini quest lines complete with camp boss, which would add some more versatility to the game.

      I'm trying to think of a way to do it. What I really would hope for is audience suggestions that I could turn into episodes. I got one and wrote something for it, and idk why it has taken me so long to upload it, I just have to edit it. But maybe what I'll do is go story beat by story beat, episode by episode, to create an alternate storyline for the show. What would really be cool is if it could get turned into a webcomic, but I don't have any art skills nor money to commission anyone. But I've noticed you watching a a bunch of my videos so since there's a demand I'll happily start brainstorming something because it is a project I've wanted to do. I really appreciate knowing people enjoy what I make.

    As a dude who wrote a small essay on the russian translation of F:E some ten years ago, I see the appeal as follows: -Epic quest based plot, like in High Fantasy genre -Sci-fi gadgets, although in the fic it’s more like techno-magic; and speaking of witch... -A very interesting adaptation of the MLP universe to the needs of the Fallout story. Gives the story this… elusive charm Cons - the “gameplay elements” lifted from Fallout 3. Fuck this nonsense. Also prose is bad, but this is to be expected I suppose… Pip is a brat, Calamity is a bro, sex scene is cringe, don't fight me - you wont win.

    I liked the concept of the book and the story that was told but I was taken out of it so many times due to the dorm of the writing mistakes made in it. There were multiple times where I had to pause and reread something because there was just a complete gap in logic from one paragraph to the next as well as a plethora of typos that made those gaps in loving all the more glaring.

      I do want to do some sort of community based fix fic project where people contribute ideas and such to write a sort of alternate screenplay of G5's story based on what the community wants it to be but so far I've only gotten one suggestion, and I wanna wait until I have a bit more of a following before committing to something that relies on having people to engage with. But if you have ideas be sure to share. I wanna make more mlp content but I can't really think of what exactly.

      @@wubway Well, I'm not really a writer, but I am rather addicted to stories and lyrics that truly move me, and your version of the story deeply moved me! On the other hoof, I found Elmushterri's ideas rather intriguing, if a bit... edgy. Making Twilight the antagonist really mixed things up, and I liked her idea of making Hitch the alicorn instead of Sunny, in her scenario. She might at least be somepony worth bouncing ideas off of. Robin Jacks' fan fic concepts are a little darkish, but at least they don't involve rewriting all the characters! ;) Maybe drop them a line. Both recommendations are CZcams users I watched before finding your video. ^.^

    Easy answer. As per usual Howard laughs at bugs calling them "features" and pushed yet another antiquated game out the door expecting modders to fix their mess for free while he sat back counting money and soaking up all the accolades. Modders walk, game flops, Bethesda aggressively gaslights and insults its entire player base and goes to paid mods hoping to recoup losses in expected revenue. Sorry Toddy ol' boy not this time.

    I don't get why people don't like the Bastard scene in PH. True, it is taboo in our culture. So what? Batting that aside, I think this is so fitting for the situation at hand. Look at Scotch's background, this is where the taboo hits a reverse. She looks up to Blackjack, ideolizes her. What does Blackjack do after a tragic loss? Exatly that. Scotch experiences a much bigger loss. She has no coping mechanism of her own, she didn't get to develop one, so she falls back on what her idol would do.

    • @wubway
      @wubway Před 7 měsíci

      Oh it absolutely is in character, and there is nothing wrong with it on a technical level. For me at least, it's just jarring. It introduces a character so late in the story, and one that is just so that scene with Scotch could be included. Bastard, by his name, is kind of a joke character who is just an utter bastard. He would have been cooler earlier in the story, rather than this climactic finale after major, emotional character deaths. To my sensibilities it just doesn't seem fitting, even though it's in character. He could have said no, even if just because he was afraid of BJ's reaction, Scotch wanting it was enough to make the point about her character. Bastard could have been given more complexity than being just a bastard, and that would have probably better fit the tone at that point in the story. Maybe he sticks around for Homelands, and he is part of a segue between the two I don't know about and that will change my perspective. While I like PH's exploration of sexuality and I stand by Somber's choice to include such a scene, I just don't think it fits with that point in the story tonally. That's just my 2 cents.

    I certainly don't care about comments like "woke". Who cares. I don't mind that my companions at Constellation are goody goody. I usually play a mostly good character anyway. If I wanted to play evil I would be a pirate, get the Crimson Fleet NPCs and just not associate with Constellation beyond the minimum. Most of the things listed here, while an interesting discussion, don't bother me too much. Here's what made me quit: 1. The repetition gets mindless 2. The dialogue sucks 3. I don't like the NPCs. They feel like cardboard cutouts (See point 2) 4. Exploration is not fun. 5. Lack of agency. OK, this is a thing in most Bethesda games, but it somehow seems more glaring in Starfield. 6. Too many things that are sort of OK but not really all that interesting. Space combat and space flight come to mind, but other things as well. I loved the ship[ building but hated the fact that there is nothing all that interesting to do with my ship after I have built it. I am a big fan of Bethesda games. I have played them all going back to Daggerfall and have loved every one of them. Multiple play throughs on every one. Starfield just doesn't do it for me.
