- THE SHIRELLES - BIG JOHN. SCEPTER RECORDS 1223 YEAR 1961. WRITTEN BY AMIEL SUMMERS & JOHN PATTON. GROUP MEMBERS ARE: SHIRLEY OWENS (ALSTON REEVES), ADDIE 'MICKI' HARRIS, BEVERLY LEE & DORIS COLEY (KENNER).
"Big John" the fall of '61...Shirley Alston....Almost 80 years old now....Such a talent!
Wow! What a gorgeous girl and such a beautiful voice. Wish I was around then.
Love Shirleys' voice...I saw them perform at a small club in Santa Ana, Ca. back in '68...
As far as I'm concerned, the shirelles are the best all female group ever!
Very cool, to see them preform.
You might want to check your spelling of the group's name.
@@gregc8670the heavens dont care about spelling so why should you. ❤
Great singers and good looking too !!
One of the best female groups ever years before the Supremes.
They were the BEST girl group before and AFTER The Supremes. Hands down. You can't compare Shirley's gorgeous, sweet yet husky, versatile voice to Diana's one trick pony nasal one lol. There Just Ain't No Competition x ps if you see this Ve hope you're okay, sending my love xx
@clareons: The Shirells we’re alright! But you can’t compare them to the Supremes! There catalog wasn’t as big nor were they as talented as the Supremes! It sounds like you have a case of sour grapes!
The shirelles were amazing but so were the supremes and the ronettes!
Yes there was no other sound like Shirley Alston & The Shirelles and they were from my hometown proud to say
John Boy Which town?
Frans Dielis John boys town is Liverpool
You're from Passaic, too?
Love the simplicity of these gals, very attractive
I saw on TV; that They were the most popular Girl Group 5 years in a row; back in the good old days!!!
What a beauty Shirley was!
She still is with the face and voice of an angel.
She was. Looks just like my cousin. I bet they have some matching dna.
I agree I always thought she was pretty
RARE FOOTAGE IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. U cant find any really good footage on them and thats a crying shame because they are among the originators - TRAILBLAZERS AND INNOVATORS. (and i wasnt even around during this time!!!)
What a great Performance from the Legendary Shirelles #TV1 where are you. These fabulous ladies are truly UNSUNG !
This ia a jewel of a performance !! I love IT....thank you for posting. I love all the Shirelles == grew up listening to them. My favorite of the group though was Beverly.....she always had a sweet little smile on her face.
I saw an episode of "Love Connection" where she was the batchelorette choosing a date. It was @ 1985, and she still hadn't married. She still looked cute, too.
CONCORDO PLENAMENTE COM VOCÊ MEU AMIGO ...MEU SONHO É ME CASAR COM A BEVERLY LEE
Refreshing even now
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 75yo Aussie fan.
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 74yo Aussie fan.
They were a pioneering group who influenced the Beatles as well as the Supremes. Shirley had a very distinctive and appealing voice that really stood out.
hertstraveller Truth
As far as I know they didn't go through the Struggles that Florence Ballard of The Supremes did.
The Shirelles were more rock influenced....great street-wise chops and great songs
One of my personal favorites& one of their best records
this is Fame --- Sound --Move :)) lovvve it!
Fabulous clip thanks so much Venus 💖
adorable...love love the song..can't stop...won't stop!
They were the most diversified in the sense they worked with so many folks. Carol King & Gerry Coffin (RIP), on Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. Burt Bacharach/Hall David (RIP) on Baby It's You. Also another Song "Maybe Tonight" was written by Van McCoy the True "Creator" of Disco. En Vogue paid hommage to them on an Awards Show.
Almost no one remembers this song. To me it's a classic just waiting for a heavy remake by somebody good. Kind of in honor of these girls. Drums and base fiddle hammer it out.
Love the lyrics ❤️
Shirley is a Girl Group Angel on this. It couldn't get any better, even with more mascara lol. Love you for this XXX
before the Supremes,we had this delightful group-so many people of a certain age ,still think of them often, and fondly
60 years ago we had great music & shitty cameras.
Now we got great cameras.
Very charming, thank you for the post.
Great clip! It's such a rare treat to see this type of footage.
These ladies are as cute as they come. This was a great song and I remember it well.
Was fortunate enough to have met them backstage when they were part of a Rock N Roll
Revival Show in Providence,R.I.Got their autographs and still have it to this day. That was in 1971
Thats my Heart.
It's a brilliant set up. Shirley looks and sounds like an angel x
Thankyou Clare xx
No, thank you Ve for this beauty lol XX
Thank you for posting this. There is so little performance footage of the Shirelles on youtube. Wonderful. Would love to see a clip of "Boys".
Great footage!
my favorite song
The lead singer, Shirley, was such a pretty lady
Please let me go back to that time!
Muziekgenot yeah man whatever happened to segregation
Me encantan
They cannot get any better just top of the very tops Peter
as i stated previousoccassions, mujsic lives thank god.
stunning !! luv it :) XX
Great rendition. Tammy Montgmery (nee Tami Terrell) recorded this as well.
Lol....adorable.
The girl groups were pretty darn fabulous.
Lovely. With natural ease. ❤
Charming
Love it !
I love her backup singers
Wow, thank you for this wonderful gift. There is so little live video of this amazing group and that makes this a great treat for those of us who love the Shirelles. I saw them at numerous shows back in the 60s and they were vocally and visually as good and in many cases better than the best. The only female group that, in my opinion, sounded better was Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles and that's a real compliment to the Shirelles
You are so lucky to have experienced the fabulous 60s...I'm an undying fan of The Shirelles and The Marvelous Marvelettes
I Definitely agree with your assessment!!! The Shirelles & The Marvelettes FOREVER!!!
I think timing has a lot to do with it. The Shirelles helped set the standard, but never fully got their dues. They also recorded for a motion picture soundtrack (It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World) before The Supremes did. The Shirelles first had hits when there was more of a demand for singles than albums, and when black female groups weren't getting much exposure on TV and in the movies. It's such a treat to stumble upon footage of this group.
Beautiful Shirley as are the others.
R.I.P. Addie "Micki" Harris (1940-1982) and Doris Coley (1941-2000).
IF WE HAD SHIRLEY OWENS-TYPE WOMEN TODAY YOU COULD MAKE LIVES WITH THEM. WE DON'T HAVE IT....NO MORE.
I'd like to see this redone in Carnegie Hall. Get a showgroup together. Grab this one and a couple of Ray Charles's with the Ray-lettes. It is absolutely the time for this stuff . Not just for us old folks (I'm 73) but for the new generation as well - dance music. Bring it back.
WOW
Bom demais!
😢we Liverpool boys got on to these first. Love them
The Supremes had more success due to the leadership of Berry Gordy and the songs of Holland, Dozier, Holland but
The Shirelles were by far the superior group. Shirley could sing circles around Diana Ross
Jerry Brownell I agree totally, Shirley is the queen of all Girl Groups.
No the supremes were great it wasnt just because of Gordy and HDH they had super talent and beauty. I do agree that Shirley would sing circles around Diane Ross. They werw both great groups @jerry brownell
@@pdaddy879 There you go then, you just admitted it yourself, that Shirley could / can sing circles around Diana Ross. So we both agree on that lol 😂 .
On this day in 1961 {November 20th} "Big John " by The Shirelles peaked at #2 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot R&B Sides Singles* chart, for the week it was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "Please Mr. Postman" by The Marvelettes...

que maravilhosa shirley!
How innocent, gentle and sung with a lot of emotion and soul. I can't look away. I hate autune songs
Where's mama said great song xx😇💐
According to Wikipedia, Titus Turner also contributed to the writing of this tune.
Dia de la Madre
It is my understanding that Shirley Alston Reeves is the aunt of Gerald Alston of the Manhattans.
Gee, a song about marriage. Imagine that.
Die Musik von Girlgroups sind einfach klasse!
Wow! What show is this from? Bridging the gap from the Chantels to the Supremes, there was no hotter act from 1960-1964 in Rock N Roll history than the Spectacular Shirelles! The ladies from Passaic, New Jersey, need their story to be told!
Hi Robert...Thankyou...clip is from some French TV Show.
Robert Velez Yes, they should have their story told but there aren't a whole lot of us left who remember them. They sure had a great run though with many hit records
who are the studio musicians ?
First American Girl group
@@lordpatty1 Probably The Wrecking Crew
Big John is stupid if he does not marry her, the is beautiful and sings too.
She could make a wonderful career in cabaret
Su madre puso a la más bonita y menor como vocalista pero eran todas buenas vocalistas, debería haberlas rotado.es fácil ser general después de la batalla .
America’s FIRST Female SUPERGROUP!!
I have that 45.
Trail blazers
Are they all still alive?
น่ารักจริงถ้าอยู่ในยุคเดียวกันผมหลงรักคุณแน่ๆ
👍👌👏😊❤️🇺🇸... too bad this footage is out of focus
Supremes had nothing on these girls...Nothing!
Fun song, but clumsy arrangement.
Joe John
I wouldn't say it's a clumsy arrangement. It's a great arrangement reminiscent of Lloyd Price.
Awkward, clumsy key changes.
@@Ransomhandsome Well they're in the history books for it...and you're not. ;)
@@friedmandesigns
Yes, under the historical heading, "Clumsy Key Changes From Years Past."
