1955 Chevy Bel Air Street Machine 2 in 1 1/24 Scale Model Kit

The Chevrolet Bel Air is a full-size car produced by Chevrolet for the 1950-1975 model years. Initially, only the two-door hardtops in the Chevrolet model range were designated with the Bel Air name from 1950 to 1952. With the 1953 model year, the Bel Air name was changed from a designation for a unique body shape to a premium level of trim applied across a number of body styles. The Bel Air continued with various other trim level designations, and it went from a mid-level trim car to a budget fleet sedan when U.S. production ceased in 1975. Production continued in Canada, for its home market only, through the 1981 model year.
The Chevrolet Bel Air, especially its third generation design, has been considered an icon of the 1950s. Well-maintained and preserved examples are highly sought after by car collectors and enthusiasts.
The Bel Air received new, revamped styling for the 1955 model year. The Bel Air was 3,456 lb (1,568 kg) and 15 ft (4.6 m) long. It was called the "Hot One" in GM's advertising campaign. Bel Airs came with features found on cars in the lower models ranges plus interior carpet, chrome headliner bands on hardtops, chrome spears on front fenders, stainless steel window moldings,[1] full wheel covers, and a Ferrari-inspired front grille. Models were further distinguished by the Bel Air name script in gold lettering later in the year.[9] For 1955 Chevrolets gained a V8 engine option and the option of the 2 speed Powerglide automatic, or a standard three speed Synchro-Mesh manual transmission with optional overdrive. The new 265 cu in (4.3 L) V8 featured a modern, overhead valve high compression ratio, short stroke design that was so good that it remained in production in various displacements for many decades. The base V8 had a two-barrel carburetor and was rated at 162 hp (121 kW) and the "Power Pack" option featured a four-barrel carburetor and other upgrades yielding 180 bhp (134 kW). Later in the year, a "Super Power Pack" option added high-compression and a further 15 bhp (11 kW). Warning lights replaced gauges for the generator and oil pressure.
A gasser is a type of hot rod car originally used for drag racing. This style of custom car build originated in United States in the late 1950s and continued until the early 1970s.[1][2] In the days before Pro Stock, the A/Gas cars were the fastest stock-appearing racers around.
Gassers are based on closed body production models[clarification needed] from the 1930s to mid-1960s, which have been stripped of extraneous weight and jacked up using a beam axle or tubular axle to provide better weight distribution on acceleration (beam axles are also lighter than an independent front suspension), though a raised stock front suspension is common as well. Common weight reduction techniques include fiberglass body panels, stripped interiors, and Lexan windows (sometimes color tinted).
The 1933-36 Willys coupés and pickups were very popular gassers.[4] The best-known would be the 1933 Willys 77.[4] While neither cheap nor plentiful, it was a competitive and lightweight choice satisfying the rules of the era (which required a ladder frame). At least one gasser incorporated a Willys frame in a Ford body to placate their sponsor while keeping it track-legal.[5] [4] Keith Ferrell's Dogcatcher, for instance, was a 1936 delivery with a fuel injected small-block Chevrolet, built for the class; in 1967, Ferrell deliberately left something off to run it in B/Altered (later, with a supercharger, in BB/A).[6]
After the company revived, the 1937-42 coupés, sedans, and pickups were again popular with hot rodders and gasser teams, and again, comparatively low production leaves unexplained why they gained so much attention.[4] Ollie Olsen's 1940 coupé Wil-A-Meaner (driven by Bob "Rapid" Dwyer[citation needed]) won the 1961 Nationals' A/G title. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
The first chrome tree and the race tires are reissued from the original Monogram badman kit. The 5 slot mags and other tires are from the reissued Revell Street Machine kit. I love that they included parts from both kits.
The Glass Hood Scoop was also from that kit. I built two of them. I loved that kit.
This is basically a Bad Man reissue minus the decals
Yip and the black 55 Chevy too
Yes. The Badman was the first model I built in the early 70’s. Thanks for bringing that point up. I think I’ll get 3
Is this model out yet ?
@@toddcrabtree1754 mega hobby says it’s in stock
@@toddcrabtree1754 yeah , I bought this kit in the badman packaging for $3 back when , now they’re asking $34.95 and the molds are showing their age. Still, I’m glad it still exists and the decals are neat , it would be great if they offered the Badman decals also for $35!
I remember this kit from when I was a teen. It was molded in black and came with the classic hot rod flame decals. I even remember the instruction sheet saying "copyright 1971"
Absolutely that was my very first kit awesome memory
I remember that too.🤟🤠👍
That kit started life as the tom Daniels bad man 55
Thanks, I thought it looked like the Badman. I wish they would have included that option as well.
Yep. And the Badman decals are available through various aftermarket sources. Perfect opportunity to build that classic model without breaking the bank.
True that. And that Daniels offering was based on the Monogram ‘55 that came available in the ‘60s.
Great build 🏆. It would have been nice if they included the old style "Badman" decals as well for another finishing option. Hopefully an aftermarket company can make them.
I agree.
I built this kit when I was a kid.
It would be nice to do the original yellow Badman version.
@@kevinwaddle447 except then you have to change the smallblock engine to a 396 (or use big block headers) with a stronger transmission than the 3 speed.
This is a re-pop of The Badman Gasser. It had the same glass hood scoop except it was clear red and the windows were also clear red. I loved that kit. I still have it here packed away somewhere. Ha ha!
I remember reading in Hotrod Magazine in 1971 where a guy built one of these gasser for $700.00 USD.
T9day, it would be closer to $80,000.00.
I wonder what a blower cost in 1971🤔
I like your short review and build. I particularly like looking at the old kits. Love Gassers but I don't think anybody does them now. The ones available are old kits as far as I know. ... so I really appreciate your review. Thanks.
My wish came true and Santa got me one for Christmas. Happy holidays!
Oh it has the Badman wheels and pieces in there. Ok I want one now.
Excellent build & presentation Chris!! Glad this kit has been rereleased!!
Love what you do and how you show the kits going together and the finished product keep up the good work
That turned out really nice Chris the white on the car really sets off those large American flag decals perfectly 👍👍
A build so nice - I watched it twice!
Fun BOTH times, too.
Thanks again (twice)...
Based on the first Monogram tri-five kit from the mid-sixties, turned into a gasser in the ‘70s. This seems a decent reboot, though the latest Revell ‘55 is vastly better. Nice job on the build…
Wow that is one AWESOME '55 Chevy Gasser Chris! Those decals look awesome on that white body! I agree 100% I love seeing the Monogram logo!
This abrasion technique is a very good trick. Thank you so much.
That design is very similar to the BADMAN chevy race car
A comment above has mentioned that it is the same tooling as the "Badman" kit from the early 70's.
@@urbanurchin5930
It doesn't have coloured windows -- red -- which are banned in NHRA competition, anyway.
good looking tires looks like a redo of the '' bad man '' 55 chevy first model kit i ever built back in the mid 70s that is the bad man kit except for the red glass and hood scoop seats and ladder bars are still the same. the decals really set that kit off !
Killer build Chris! such a cool kit. Maybe Santa will git me one under the tree.
Oh my God! The Monogram Bad Man gasser re-released! It's 1:24 so swapping parts is a bit difficult. But if you've only built a few kits, this will go together like a dream. Sturdy, too.
Great build, Chris!
The Badman was one of the first of this type of kits I built ('68) and it did go together like a dream.

👍
FYI the The little divots on the side chrome that go vertical would have black inside of them and the divot going down the side of the chrome would be white inside. Just to let you know. Great build I must add that kit to my 55 Chevy collection.
Can't wait to get my paws on this kit!
One of Tom Daniel's best designs
Wonder if they are planning to reissue the Badman? That would be cool.
Nice looking cars
Nice build
Very cool build!
Beautiful build. Mine actually came with big flame decals for the sides and hood, so I did it in gloss black with a flat black interior. This was after being out of the hobby for over thirty years and working on it at night after work. So it took awhile.
I remember the black with flames, but was it a gasser? I was thinking it was a street machine, but that was in the 80s.🤟🤠👍
@@modelcars2978 It was a gasser but they did call it a street machine I have it too
@@purpurahaze9179 thanks. Is that the same kit as the Badman?🤟🤠👍
@@modelcars2978 I think it is a reissue of the Badman but without the decals and the red windows
Welcome back.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing. 👍
Very cool stuff Chris stay safe and positive and keep up the great work
The body is the Badman kit for sure!! Looks like a great kit!!
Awesome Build as usual Chris. Can't wait to get mine soon.
Monogram Badman with extras.
I remember this kit as a child, yellow body and orange windows.
👍 on buuld
Good looking model!
Loving the videos
Great build. I want one or five. 🤟🤠👍
Still have my Badman model and I'll need one of these now.
Beautiful double nickel chris
Great looking car!
Great review Chris.
I just got this kit the other day and want to get another one to build both versions on the box.
Both paint schemes look awesome.
Excellent job. I enjoyed the whole video.
Nice job on Chevy as usual!, thanks
Awesome kit , great work as always
SOOO KOOOOOLLLLLL !
Mike
Just picked up the kit at Hobby lobby at 40% off. Looks like a great kit. Thanks for your review!!!! Also i dig the western music! Badass!!👍🏻👍🏻
I was waiting for this one 😃
That's badass! I always like monogram kits. I think it was Revell who had the split tires that I didn't like. They had some cool models back in the '70s when I did them but I shy'd away from them because of the tires. That's a good lookin' '55 there.
Nice love the tri five but when are you going do more on the fanhome knightrider would like to see that one finished
Gotta love the 55 ................. 🙂👍😊
Great build!! My only issue is the molded in exhaust. Racers would remove then and the stock gas tank first thing.
lovin this kit badman was my fav but i have to get 3 of these for christmas
Love your channel!
Thank you so much!
Pretty cool😎
Great build 👍🏻👍🏻as always Chris an whare did you find the drill set at
Nice!
Other than the molded exhaust that looks like a really nice kit.
I just wish companies would quit molded exhaust and rear ends in some kits.
Great looking build Chris.
Nice 👌
Very neat! I imagine that some of those gassers might have a plain-jane sheet metal dash?? Thanks for the share!!
I've always rather liked the 55 Bel Air, but the 57 Bel Air convertible is my favourite version. ;)
I had a thought while watching this video. Have you ever considered doing a model display of different car engines? I thought that might be an interesting way of displaying numerous engines all in a row. If they came from individual model kits, that would be advantageous as you can build and detail them as you please.
Very nicely done ! I had a few of these as a kid. I’m pretty sure they were named “‘55 Chev” in those days. Do they really did lengthen they name 😉
Be better if it was a sedan and not hard top...Cool though...Know a safe way to add spattered rubber behind back tire, besides decal? Maybe mask off and flick flat black paint from a brush. Or dab with a dry like brush...
It’s the old Monogram Badman kit from decades back.
@@reddsshaker3477 Oh right, sure is, didnt think about it...
@@0Nebula0 👍🏼👍🏼
Dissapointed you didn't make it look like Mike Finnegan's BlaspHemi lol.
seriously though nice build
That would have been PERFECT!!! Great idea man!!!
@@dew2667 that's what I want this kit for lol
@@crashandcynder Yep, will buy it just for that!!! Thanks HPI Guy!!!
This isn't a hemi. The engine is a Chev small-block wedge motor. There are decals that read "327".
Also, this is a hardtop while BlaspHemi is a 2-door sedan. Otherwise, they are quite similar appearing.
@@randytaylor1258 yeah but you can swap a hemi in
Nice build - decals look great.
It’s the old Monogram Street Machine and Badman reissued in one box.
Pretty near to being the best kit Revellogram ever made
That and the Tom Daniel series of kits
Like almost everybody else I'm seeing the Badman similarity's and would get it again but I have a feeling it could be reissued sometime. All they have to do is do the windows and hood scoop in clear red and add the Badman decals.
Yes, it's the Badman plastic. Revell doesn't have an agreement with Tom Daniel so they won't be able to issue it as the Badman.
@@hpiguy That's right you said Revell USA. The Monogram logo on the box kinda threw me.
I have the original kit, but this one looks every bit as nice. Another great build. Curious where you got the finger drills.
Those are old Hobbico brand drills I got at least 20 some years ago, still working well.
I'm sure modern versions can be found out there. Thanks!
Am thinking of that kit, but either doing it as Falfa's '55 in american graffiti or the driver's car from 2 lane blacktop.
Sweet!
I was just thinking about 🤔 Alfalfa's car on American Graffiti cause this has the rear quarter panels cut out for the slicks.
And forgot about the Two Lane Blacktop car, that's right, it also has the quarter panels cut out.
Kenny Spaulding apparently 3 '55's were built for 2 lane black top, one was crashed in the movie. The remaining 2 were used in American graffiti, one for interior shots the other for exteriors, think at least of these still exists. Thought it was an interesting side note brought up by a model, anyway hi from Australia and have a nice day 🙂
@@alwynemcintyre2184 I heard one was wrecked making Two Lane Blacktop but didn't realize the others were used in American Graffiti. That's interesting. I love both of those movies and have them on DVD.
This must be the newer / Repop of the older kit that I have : Monogram ‘55 Chevy Street Machine - 1:24 Scale Kit #2211 - ( Black ) Also like the Kit : Revell '55 Chevy Street Machine Street Burner 1/24 Scale Kit 85-2211
Who’s brand of tape do you use? Looks like it comes off the roll quite easily.
I've been watching your a few times now I think you're a excellent builder... I noticed that when you spray your parts you don't use a air brush... do you like the cans better?
Thanks!
It's not really a case of liking, I own airbrushes and have used them on some custom colors.
I just prefer the speed of spray cans, dry time and no clean up, and these days there are so many colors.
Another ace build! Which Molotow pen do you recommend? (size) Currently working on the Tamiya S600 which has a fine stainless trim piece that runs the entirety of the body…
The one I use most is the 2mm marker.
oh silly me I thought the tire marks on the back wheel wells look really stupid! well I was wrong car looks great
Just to mention, monogram had a yellow molded 55 chevy called the BadMan, it came with red glass and hood mount... basicly, this kit is the sane kit, just a updated version & redesigned
We know we know
@@edwardcox2840 your comments t is nothing more then a sarcastic comment, if your not able to respond with out being rube and obnoxious with your comment, then don't post a comment....!
Has the badman issue parts also
Hey man, do you have any tips if I wanna paint my model 2 colors? Love the videos. Keep it up!!
Watch any of my videos where the car is multiple colors. You can scroll through the videos on the channel home page. czcams.com/users/hpiguy
Always spray the lighter color first. Don't stretch the masking tape tight, because it will shrink and cause bleed through. Take your time and make sure the masking is burnished down good. Spray the second color in light coats. I hope that helps. 🤟🤠👍
Is this the old "Badman" kit? That one was in yellow.
Yes, an the later 90s release was black with flames behind the front wheel wells as the box art.
It's a combo of the Badman, and the black street machine version.
Hey Chris. Sure you have gotten this question before. What is the liquid activator you use ?
All the super glue activators are the same chemical, simply google super glue activator and grab the one easiest to get.
I'm using a 8 oz bottle I bought nearly 20 years ago and al getting near the bottom, it has the Sig model airplane brand on it.
What’s the brush glue you use?
how did you do the tire decals can you give me a step by step on them I didn't see you put them on in the video
They apply like any other waterslide decal. No difference.
What model glue do you use
Where did you get the finger drill bits?? I need a set!
Years ago from Hobbico but places like Ebay and Harbor Freight usually carry them. Just search pin vise, etc.
Street Machine Re Do, with Bad Man parts.
Just learned that the rear wheels, the five-spoke do not match, Can this be confirmed by people who have bought the kit ? Have seen a picture one is like a daisy spoke the other is a torque thrust style
I show all the parts up close during the unboxing, so you'd be able to see in this very video.
@@hpiguy yes after looking back at your video at 20.06 I see briefly the 5 spoke wheels that aren't being used in your kit build, it does look like both rear wheels are different so that must mean everyone's kits are that way thank you
First!
Anyone else having trouble with body fitting the chassis flush?.
I just picked up this kit and did a mock up. The glass doesn't fit well at the front and the interiorr tub doesn't go in well either. I haven't tried mocking up the glass, tub and chassis yet but I'm afraid it's going to be a nightmare to get it all to fit correctly.
Damn no bad man decals🙃😕
He brother
Is there a 20-22 Plastic model Explorer for a rendition of a Explorer Interceptor for my friends of the Plymouth Police and State police friend s
building one now-the trans is wrong -looks like a 3 speed-???
I'm surprised by this release. Not the best kit compared to the early 00s issued 55s and 56s. And even the 80s Hot Rod and Skips Fiesta version. Should have let this go to Atlantis.
Get where cat efford buy models anymore
Why in 2022 do we NOT have a good accurate kit of a 55 Chevy sedan? One of Americas most iconic cars.
I don't know how accurate your looking for but AMT has a '55 Chevy 2 in 1 can be built stock or custom. HPI Guys did a video around 3 years ago but I still see it in our local Hobby Lobby all the time.
Because we like drag cars 😄
What size drill bit were using to open up the rims?
I would like to know where can I get a set of those hand drill bits or how you made them?
