BWR Cedar City 2020 Highlights On Board with Joe Goettl 9th Overall

The Canyon Belgian Waffle Ride, Cedar City 2020 was a race to remember! Epic, gnarly, increadibly. This was the most unique gravel race I have ever taken part in with everything form hero gravel, loose and sandy double tracks, a super steep and loose climb, and a legit, rocky mountain bike single track. Luckily, I had my Trek Checkpoint SL7 set up with Bontrager Gr1's 700x40c running about 40psi to take on this beast of a course. I made it through the initial carnage making the front group at mile 36.
However, come mile 44, I fell off the lead and into no mans land until joining up with Brian McCulloch. We traded pulls from mile 52 to 110. I was just ahead of him coming off the mtb trail until cramps took over my legs and he went around me. I then ended up following the wrong arrows through town and finished just ahead of him. I talked to the results people to get it sorted out and we put me back behind him to officailly finish in 9th overall!
Super stoked to crack the top 10 at a race like this! Huge thanks to Cedar City and Canyon Belgian Waffle Ride for the opportunity to showcase all the hard work us riders have put into training for events like these!

richard tye your welcome and thanks for watching! They had a cut off at 12 hours, and times were everything in between the winners at 5hr 55min and 12hr. Over 40 DNf’s out of 600+ riders
Incredible!...........I wonder if these top racers would rather have smaller gear jumps of 2x drivetrain?
What was the range of tires used by others? Were you happy with your choice of 40's?
John Holton pretty much everyone in the front group went with 38s, 40s or 42s and we all had some tread. This was not your average gravel race and had a lot of technical off road sections plus a rocky mtb section at the end. I would want to end a hard days work by sliding out on it or getting a puncture!

Thanks! I didn’t have a good power meter on this bike this year, but hopefully I’ll have one on it for 2021. I may release a longer version with heart rate and speed if I can figure that out sometime this winter.

Did two cars make it on to the course when they should not have been or did riders cross the double yellow when they were not supposed to at 45 second into the video? Either way not good. Looks like some growing pains during this first year of this event.
Harry Lew they had the roads blocked but those cars pulled out of the gas station in between where it’s blocked. It’s not too uncommon for that to happen in higher level races, we had police escorts further up the road from us and they will signal the cars not to move and us riders will communicate about the upcoming car by simply shouting “cars up” so it’s not a big deal.

Matt Regan yep they were the wafer doing the shorter course that started the same time as us.
What size tires were you running?

what kind of camera were you using and how did you have so much battery life?
trancenation I had the new go pro hero 9 black. The battery is 30% bigger, but I was turning it off and on to save battery for the good sections and I switched to a new battery before the climb at mile 110. I used a chest mount filming in superview at 1080p by 60fps

Pete Hager thanks Pete!! This is the first cycling vid to have a bit of a break through! The 9 is awesome, the bigger battery makes a big difference and the screen on the front is super nice so I can look down and make sure it’s on when it’s on my chesty mount!! Scheels owns the camera and let’s me use it when I need it.

I remember the first time I saw you overlay your digital ride and I thought it was super original. I think it would be epic to do something like that for my adventure atv rides but my phone battery sucks lol keep it up man! I cant wait to see another one!
Pete Hager I think if you record your ride with strava it doesn’t take much battery. I use the wahoo bolt which is 229 and last for somewhere over 15 hours. It then goes from the wahoo app to the relive app which I usually have to do on my phone (computer doesn’t late me save it) and then I send it from phone to computer with the drive.

Sean Solomon there was a dip with soft gravel in it where he lost control and couldn’t save it
The race should have been neutralized till everyone made it through those tunnels or the route changed so as not to include them.

Thank God I sold my road bike decades ago. Oh the mile after mile of boredom, monotony and tiresome tedium of the same-o same-o for hours and long tiring hours. No jumps, no tight twisting turns or switchbacks, no steep short dusty uphill sprints in loose rocky and root strewn forests to challenge traction, no ruts to charge over, no stream crossings, no fun.
Good Riddance
...not to mention potholes, glass, slippery gravel and oil slicks along with bad drivers and blown tires.
Get rid of the masks, no need for them
