- While the course was amazing, the legs were not, and this was the worst race of the season for me. However, everyone has their bad days, and this was mine. Here's the story of how it went down at the 2023 Rad Dirt Fest presented in Trinidad Colorado.

Great camera shots. Thanks for this.
Thanks for posting even though you didn't have a great day. It's important for people to see the up and down of racing. It happens to all of us at some stage. I look forward to self assessment and the comeback!
Word! Looking forward to my last race at BWR Kansas to try and end the season on a better note!
Great video. Your dog is soooo cute. Tough one, but still very impressed.
Production value and story telling is amazing. No ego just great footage and racing.
Great vid, fair play you pushed through 💪💪💪🏁
BEAUTIFUL DOG!❤🐾🐾
Good video man and sorry that it wasn't your day! Really sweet to see the support your wife gives you and the little embrace near the end; even on a bad day she and the pup are there for you. Good luck at the next race!
Thank you!
An exceptional performance both on and off the bike w/ amazing video editing, MUSIC, commentary, and humbleness!!! Please keep pushing MN Joe!!! We are rooting for you left and right!!! :)
Thx for the terrific video and the honest coverage. We feel for you. The effort, the drive and the emotion are all there. Keep working and believe that better races are in your future.
I crashed hard on the cattle grate just before the aide station at 70. Busted a couple ribs and had the end of my day. I liked the course but could do without the south shore of the lake. I think going up through Ludlow like in year one and two was a bit more enjoyable and had less choking points. I was riding single speed and found myself cursing every gear shifter breaking my momentum on those chunky rollers. Better luck next year man, to the both of us!
I have watched two of your videos now and some of the best racing footage available. Nice commentary, cool tunes, lots of action shots and you’re fighting it out with the top riders!
Thanks for watching! And I appreciate the compliments 🙏
Great race coverage! And you were rolling with the heavy hitters till.... Don't give in! Back to training, gotta solve the mystery of being your absolute best. God bless.
Uff da indeed. Kudos for sharing and good luck for the next one.
Love all your videos, please keep them coming!
Great video quality. Race enough and everyone has a race like this one (except Keegan apparently). Keep up the good work.
Thank you! Ahaha yes, just Keegan 🤔
What a fantastic looking course!
Sorry the result wasn’t what you’ve been aiming for, but man, this video is elite.
I do the exact same shit with my hat 😂
Nice footage bro
love these videos
Great videos, love to see some in-pack-footage from the GP races.
P.S. I have the same crooked-face/hat issue 😂
Haha thanks! Oh does it bug my wife but it’s not on purpose 😅
great Video. You should try the BC1000 here in British Columbia or Log Driver's Waltz near Ottawa.
Uff da
Great footage, I have the same bike!! Slicks!! how wide, what pressure?
40c width, 34psi front 36psi rear. With inserts I’ll do about 32-34 at the start, they will gain a few psi as the temp rises
Awesome footage and really appreciate the honesty. What kind of chest mount are you wearing for your gopro? It looks magnetic.
Thank you! It’s the old go pro chesty, I don’t like the new one with all the padding as it’s a bit bulkier, I think there are some on Amazon without padding. Then I wear it on top of a super thin base layer and put the jersey over it, zip the jersey up to the go pro and pin the jersey shut above the go pro. Use superview with hypersmooth boost, or auto boost on the new 12
Curious how you mount your GoPro to your chest?
I normally ride a lap around a local lake for exercise and thought how hard could riding on gravel really be? Well, I have 700x42 tires and said w/e let's do it, let's take a side road here. It's tough man. It really put into perspective the effort involved in these races even if my effort was only a mile extra on gravel.
Please Start Riding the quad
We've all had those kinds of days, it's all about moving on. BTW, your voiceover sound level should come up a bit and the music should go down quite a bit.
Thanks for the feedback, I’ve been trying to dial it in, and funny thing is watching it on either of my tv’s, the voiceover still sounds a little too loud to me 🤔. May I ask what platform you watched this on?
Same for me, loud music quieter talking/everything else. Android phone, CZcams app 👍🏻
How did the slicks do? What width?
They were great! I ran them in 700x40c with the exo casing with no inserts, so a little bit riskier setup, but I had no issues!

can you sleep high & train lower? Like a camper in the east side mtns?
I’d have to move or get an altitude tent, thoughts for next season but until then I’ll focus on stuff below 6k. I’ve done well at BWR cedar city which hits just about 6, I’ve been a bit heavier this year too focused on healing an injury so I may try and drop back down to my normal race weight next season
Sorry man, I'd want a bit of a corner on my tires. I definitely feel better after a several days at altitude, arriver a week earlier?? Good recap. Oh, wear gloves!
Thank you! Hoping to have a bigger budget to be able to do that next season! Lost my gloves at nations and new order hadn’t come in yet… but I don’t mind on a non techy course like this… unless I were to crash of course 😬
Why is this a mass start..I can see some issues.
While gravel is still evolving, I think the overall feedback is from elite men and women at this race is preference for separate starts, and I think it will chance next year.
😂😂😂😂
Tires probably didn't help. Don't use Maxxis gravel tires. Unlike their MTB tires, they absolutely suck. Awful puncture protection, and high rolling resistance. Those Velocitas feel like treacle unless you run them super high pressure. If you want a gravel slick there's really only one game in town - Challenge Strada Bianchi Pro HTLR.
How about some love and respect for the strong women racers like Lauren, et al, as they pass you? Appreciate the honesty but this stings for us women viewers.
My apologies. Of course, the ladies at the front of these races are incredible athletes and I do respect them. If this happens again, I’ll try and be better and point out their names.
However, we can’t deny the science that men have a physiological advantage over the women. As a male training as hard as I can, putting loads of time, energy and money into every race, trying to get results and gain enough support to become a “gravel pro,” I’d hope you understand my honest feedback here.
Again, I appreciate the honesty. No one doubts your commitment. Pointing out that in order for the sport to grow (and to grow your audience, if you care), respect for all riders - male, female, para, whatever - seems crucial. The men aren’t the only racers that train hard, spend money, are super committed, maybe more so because they have to be. Your choice, of course!
I didn't catch any disrespect towards women here. I think you're just fishing for an issue.
