    Hey again, it’s Shahin from BWR today! Nice to get a full tour of your set up here. How did that cassette work for you with the flattop chain? I didn’t know they were compatible.

      Hey Shahin! It worked awesome today! So much better to have the extra range with the 9, especially on the last paved dowhill! My mechanic at Scheels was a little iffy about doing it, but once he got it on he was actually super impressed with how well it shifts!

    A thought about tires...I love the speed of the Pirelli H, but agree that the grip is sometimes lacking. I took a page from MTB tire setups, and experimented with different treads front and rear. I found that running a Pirelli M on the front gave me awesome confident handling in loose stuff, with very little cost in additional rolling resistance. I hope you have an awesome season!!

      That’s a good setup! I considered running the m up front as it is still pretty highly rated for speed and would add some good grip! I may try that setup later this season!
      Thank you!

    Good luck in the triple crown and the rest of season. Have bike parts problems (fork and new pedal system CB to Time) that came up past couple weeks taking me out of the first race the TC. Just San Diego and maybe UT. Then nothing till fall due to SoCal summer heat and lack of gravel races region wide. Still getting use 1x after a lifetime on on 2x or CX/gravel bikes. Feels like different in pedaling/cadence compared to 2x. Good luck in the season and earning high results.

    Really nice ride! I am particularly curious about the shorter crank length and glad you have found what works for you. I started with 175's as a Pro mtb in the 90's and only recently started using shorter cranks on my road setups due to my love of the spin from my 165mm track days. I think my choice will be 170's when I go full gravel this year. I Love the videos and just happened to relocate from So Cal to Cedar City last month! See you at BWR Cedar.

      Thanks Brian! With my long torso/arms and short legs it really helps to open up my hip angle! I’ve been prone to overuse injuries on the bike and my back would get really sore riding in an aero position, the short cranks help a-lot on both fronts!
      Cedar city is one of my favorite races! Come say hi if you see me out there!

    Great content! Questions - 1) What played into your decision to go back to 1x? and 2)Would you ever consider one of the new gravel forks from Fox or RS?

    • @jgoettl2.0
      @jgoettl2.0  Před 2 měsíci

      1. Many factors - decreasing the risk of dropping the front chain was the first, this took me out of the front group at BWR Kansas at mile 90 last year. I also target the BWR series which includes lots of single track and rough roads and 1x performs better on these sections! Lastly, unbound is a target for this year and mud can cause a lot of issues with your front derailure!
      I’d consider it on occasion, but I think running bigger tires (45’s) is more effective and cheaper place to start. It would be a lot of work swapping the fork on and off with the brake housing!

  • @briansmallwood4095
    @briansmallwood4095 Před měsícem

    That Vittoria tire liner ar 2:10. Is that the standard gravel size or did you have to go up to a Mtb sizing for 45's? Would you stay with this setup or do you plan for any changes? Thx in advance!

    • @jgoettl2.0
      @jgoettl2.0  Před měsícem +1

      It’s just the standard gravel liner which I still think is good for the 45’s!
      I’ve had trouble with the e13 skipping in the 9 and 10, possibly caused by the waxed red flat top chain, but I’ve taken it off for now and back to the 10-44 with a 46t up front. I’m probably going to get a 48 for races i don’t need the 46. It’s not bad but for sure have spots where I spin out much more than when I had that 9 tooth!

    Nice bike! What model SMP saddle are you running? Are you sponsored by them? Just curious about that choice, you don't often see SMP saddles.

      Thank you! I have the vulkor on here but am currently testing the f30c-si. I was fighting with the angle on the vulkor having to run it really nose down to be comfortable. I work with Colby Pearce on bike fit and he is a big fan of them. I’m not sponsored by them though.

    Do you know if the Checkpoint will fit a Schwable Thunder Burt 29x2.1 in back?

    • @jgoettl2.0
      @jgoettl2.0  Před 3 měsíci

      Mmm I’m not sure that would work. There’s not a ton of room left with the 45’s on in the rear, but a good amount of in the front…

    I'd strongly recommend riding a much narrower bar with flare (so you still have control on the drops). Something in the 350-360 range at the hoods. On those fast flat and rolling courses in the US you'd benefit a lot.

      I’m pretty sensitive to changes in position with my fit, I let my fitter decide what parts I get, I’ve got an appointment next week so I may be switching some things out and I’ll ask about narrower bars
