Something You Probably Didn't Know About The Basic Sigma Metalytics PMV!!

- In this video, I explain the reason why you should NOT test your 90% silver using the Basic Sigma Metalytics Precious Metals Verifier. This Basic machine only tests the resistivity of a metal and in this case, 90% silver and Clad coins have a similar resistivity, giving you a false positive.
Instead, you may want to use a ping tester to authenticate your 90% silver coins or conduct a specific gravity test with some simple tools like a bottle of water, an inexpensive precision balance, and floss. Below are the links where you can purchase a decent balance and a ping tester. Thanks for watching!

Sigmas are great for bullion, but nothing besides specific gravity tests (which damages the coin) is better than a scale in combination with calipers. That’s old school, but it works well. It should also be noted if you’re going to do a specific gravity test, use distilled water. Great video!
🔥🦈🌊
Great point Oceans on using distilled water next time. Thank you very much for the advice! I appreciate your input my friend!
I don't believe a specific gravity test would not damage the coin, as long as the water in inert.
Agreed, distilled water.except for culls and circs.but why not?
I discovered the same thing & I was searching for videos to see if anyone else is having the same issue. I too was able to put a simple 1991 quarter & it passed. False positive! Thanks!
No problem, glad to know others are noticing this too. I'm not too worried about finding fake silver half dollars, quarters, or dimes.... it's more so to raise awareness for those just using these to test their Morgan's and Peace Dollars.
Very informative video SGT. Thanks for putting it out there!
No problem Ma'am, just trying to do my part to share some info. I appreciate the kind words! Hope you and the hubs had a great 4th of July!
Thank you for the information.
I appreciate the feedback brother! Hope you had an awesome 4th of July out in NY! I'm sure you did though, NY knows how to party! 🎆🇺🇲💪👊
I caught about half of what you said… tinnitus 😢

🤣🤣🤣 I knew I wasn't the only one!!
The clad composition was designed on purpose to reflect eddy current similarly. This was done to appease casinos, so they didnt have to modify their coin validators as silver coins were going to be phased out.
Thank you very much for the informative comment! Make sense for sure!
Thank you Sgt for the info, great video brother
Thanks brother, I appreciate that! Hope you and Mary had a great 4th!
Thank you for sharing and explaining the gravity test!
No problem brother, always happy to share my experiences!
Good job we all appreciate the video Thanks
Thank you very much my friend, I appreciate the feedback!
Community exclusive 👍I've never seen a specific gravity test on precious metals. Lovely Psalm on your logo
Thank you very much brother, on both counts!
Great video. As a rule, I never accept one single test to validate a coin. Weight, diameter and thickness, then test on the sigma. If there are any flags, a gravity test. Personally, Im not a fan of 90% silver and dont stack any. Recently bought a 1800s gold coin that I couldnt verify on the Sigma. Ended up doing a scratch test to confirm its 22k gold to validate it. Because f that, I wont even deal with old gold anymore.
Thank you very much for the feedback! Yeah, I agree, don't just settle for any 1 test to call something good. It's not that hard for scammers to get one thing right on a fake but it's much harder and damn near impossible to get it all right. I personally don't own any old gold, although I would love to get my hands on some pre33! I hear you though, sucks you had to resort to the scratch/acid test.
Thanks for sharing the info
Thank you very much my friend!
Hopefully a Sigma will be in my Christmas stocking 🙏
Lol I'll be happy with a 10 oz silver bar! Lol
There you go!! You're going to love it! Congrats my friend!
This is a brilliant video SGT. I learned a lot. Thanks for sharing. Time for me to dip my silvers LOL 😂
Thanks brother, I appreciate the feedback! 😅
Specific gravity test is really the only one you need and it's easy and cheap; you just need a scale, a plastic cup, and some string. Just pat dry with a soft cloth if you're worried about damaging the coin. Where the Sigma excels is detecting tungsten-filled gold, as that will pass the specific gravity test but the Sigma will catch it because the conductivity will be different. It's also okay with .999 bullion, but can confuse copper and silver-plated copper with sterling and 90% silver.
You have a point, a Sigma can easily be fooled with some of the fakes out there but it's a good thing we have many different tools and cheap ways of testing our Bullion. Thank you very much for your feedback and comment my friend!
I also noticed with gold .999+ regular quarters were showing up as a false positives using the wand (small & large). Which I had to use for grams of gold as the main sensor didn’t work due to the smaller size.
Anyone else having this issue?
I didn’t have an issue with Gold Eagles, silver eagles & silver rounds (99.99 & 99.9). I used the main sensor for those.
I'll have to try mine out but I'm sure I'll probably get same results. Thanks for sharing these findings!
Great video SGT
Thanks brother, much appreciated!
Excellent video, SGT. I don’t have a lot of 90%, but the specific gravity test is a winner!
Thanks for the feedback brother! The "silver lining" to all this is we probably don't have to worry too much on coming across fake Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars (aside from the valuable numismatics) because I'm assuming it wouldn't be cost effective for the criminals. I appreciate you stopping by!
Wow, I never would have guessed that. Very helpful video!
Same here, I was pretty disappointed. Glad this video was helpful! Thank you for stopping by my friend! 🇺🇲💪👊

Oh snap!! L.J. busting out the Spanish! Igualmente mi amigo. Espero que todo este bien contigo y tu familia! 🇺🇲💪👊
I ran into the same thing and I agree that the ping test is probably quick and best way because of the properties of pure gold/silver unique ping sound. My bullion dealer at OM Bullion showed me how the 90% silver real/fakes can be deceiving with same results on sigma.
It's a little disappointing that the basic model cost a good amount yet doesn't have the function to distinguish the difference. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Thanjs for the heads up SGT!
You got it brother! Thanks for stopping by!
Great advice! I have the Sigma Pro version because of this very issue.
If I had it to do over again, I would probably have bought the Pro Mini and saved a bunch of money and been able to access more features through the app.
That's great advice on your part too my friend, this will help me greatly, should I decide to upgrade in the near future! Thank you very much for your input!!
@@S.G.T.Stacking I'll probably put together a video pretty soon about all the testing methods I have also.
I wish there was a way to get a free Sigma Pro mini from that company. They're crazy expensive. 🤣
@@WorldMoneyWins looking forward to that video! Keep me posted... and I know what you mean lol these things aren't cheap!
Well I bought the the SIGMA LARGE PRO ; Because I buy GOLD , and silver , and it has found 2 fakes , 1986 Morgan’s and saved me 1 time into buying a fake Indian head gold So it has paid for itself already . Worth the first me . Spend $2000.00 on fake gold and it will make you cry 😭
@@user-dk1rr6lk7k yeah, that's the one I have. I found a fake gold bar for a friend of mine that brought all his gold in to my office to check for him.
I mainly buy gold also
Wow... my 90% stacking goal just went to the back burner. How do you ping dimes! So Disappointing! As soon as I saw this video I tested it myself and sure enough. I did get better results using the small wand and setting the sigma to 92.5 sterling silver, but still wasn't 100%. It did show most clad on Quarters and halves, but a couple clad still showed up in the brackets. At least for .999 and up, its still very reliable on the machine. I Think???? LOL Thanks for the video brother!
It's a little harder to ping dimes, as you can imagine lol. I agree man, I was a disappointed when I discovered this... had to let others know but I agree, it's been reliable for .999FS Bullion thus far! I appreciate you stopping brother and thanks for the feedback!
Careful carrying a good earth magnet, can cause some issues. Scale yes and exactly, the pinger. Only thing in a shtf for example would be most likely nobody will know due to internet being down. Great examples of testing for purity.
Yeah, I forget how a good Earth magnet can ruin a lot of things real quick! Especially electronics and credit cards, thanks for the reminder! Good point on SHTF scenario, there would probably be a crap ton of fakes rolling around. Thanks for sharing your insight my friend! We can all benefit from individuals as yourself with a lot of useful knowledge!! 🇺🇲💪👊
Thank you for sharing this. However, this issue is specific to 90% silver. I’m not a collector. I stack primarily 1 oz gold bars, 1 oz silver eagles, maples and buffalo rounds and bars. For these products there is no problem.
That's correct, this is issues only pertains to 90% silver coinage. I have no issues either with gold and silver bullion (.999 or .9999). The main reason I made this video is because I've seen others testing their Morgan's and Peace Dollars with it... just wanted to shed some light on the issue. Thanks for stopping in and for your feedback!

I find that the magnetic slide is also a good test also for your 90% coins. Use it in conjunction with the other tests to help determine real from fakes.
Those are pretty convenient, I agree. I don't own one myself but not a bad idea to get your hands on one. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!
Very good info! Thank you !
Thank you very much for the feedback my friend!
Great vid! Learned much. Question: I see the stick you're pinging with is made of wood and therefore, softer than the silver, but does it leave ding marks in silver rounds, specifically?
Thank you for the feedback! It actually does not leave any dings or marks that I've noticed however, I personally wouldn't use it on a numismatic coin with a high value. It's a great tool in my opinion and fairly inexpensive! 🇺🇲💪👊
Right on S.G.T., I've got one Morgan I'm not sure of. I've been told 90% can test outside the brackets slightly. This video is super helpful. Thank you
Awesome brother, glad to help. Thank you very much for your feedback and support!
PMV is just one tool. I have one... but I also check dimensions, weight and if possible, ping. PMV does a great job detecting sterling silver, as the wands work on spoons, bowls, etc.
It is definitely a great tool, works perfectly for me as a large portion of my stack consists of .999/.9999 Bullion bars/coins. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts my friend!
@@S.G.T.Stacking PMV pro is apparently the best.
I might invest in one in the future! Thanks for sharing!
Wow, good to know. great video, Thanks!
I appreciate your feedback and for stopping by my friend!
It is wrong for you to test a 1985 clad quarter using the setting of pre1900 90% silver. The machine has it's issues as you point out but doing the test that way is not a machine problem it is a user problem. You don't bite into an apple expecting it to taste like an orange and saying the fruit is bad. Nicely done with the Specific Gravity test, thanks.
You clearly missed the point of the video. Judging by your response, I'd be wasting my time explaining it. Thanks for your feedback lol.

Nice video. Thanks
Thank you very much, I appreciate your feedback.
My local coin shop tested my Local Silver Mint "barter bars" on this exact device and they read outside of the brackets for pure silver;
confused, and pissed(!), I sent them to be tested at a refiner and they came back as real silver.
Often times, these devices will have a hard time catching a good reading on poured bars, especially if there is toning on them or any high relief spots. Did they test it with the Bullion wand?
@@S.G.T.Stacking No, he just plopped it on there, threw it back, and said "this is fake".
@@josephglover4546 I think that's where he went wrong. Had he used the Bullion wand or even the large wand, he would have had different results. Still a bit unprofessional of him to just call it a fake right off the bat without during further tests imo.

Howdy SGT! Happy Independence Day! I need another Marine round. Let me know how much.
Happy Independence Day my friend! I actually do not have anymore Marine Rounds at the moment. I'll keep you posted if I find another one in my LCS!
If you go into measurement mode, I bet the basic sigma will distinguish between the fake and real and use wands too. The resistivity # should be different. I have the Pro mini and with a scale does great to confirm both resistivity and density on Au, Ag and Pt, Pd.
I'll have to check that out, wouldn't hurt to try. I'll let you know what I get using the wands. Thanks for the tip my friend!
@@S.G.T.Stacking I tried with the Pro mini set at 90% and use a Morgan & Peace reading 2.05 (green bar) and clads reading around 1.80 (red bar). Didn’t use the wands bc the unit does a top and bottom read for surface and thru, thickness, diameter etc. Also had a bad Morgan reading way off in the red at 2.40+.

Great video. Would you do the water specific gravity test for .999% gold or silver? I ask because you didn’t mention it for that.
I’m new to the space. Thanks
Absolutely, I'll do one in the near future. The main reason I did this video was to show how the Sigma Basic does not differentiate between clad and 90% silver. Thank you very much for your feedback! Happy Holidays!
@@S.G.T.StackingSounds like you’re saying the .999% doesnt have the same issue?
Thanks bro. Happy holidays to you as well
@@fmg4537 Correct, this machine does not have that issue with .999 or .9999 silver/gold. I have heard of people still getting false positives on it, so it's not 100% accurate but it is an added line of defense when it comes to validating the legitimacy of your stack.
No problem at all brother! 🙏
@@S.G.T.StackingThat is why to add the other tests. Thanks buddy.
@@S.G.T.Stacking I forgot to mention. Just bought the scale and ping tester you recommended. Can you please drop a link for the caliper you use as well?
Can the earth magnet be purchased at the store like Walmart or is there a brand you recommend? This will be my last message. Thanks :)
I think all Sigma Metalytics devices test resistivity of the metal/alloy. Basic model measures surface resistivity only and PRO measures resistivity through the coin, from one side to the other side. That's why PRO is more reliable - it tests resistivity of the metal inside, not just the metal on the surface.
Yeah, that's exactly correct. The PRO also offers a specific gravity test apparently. I'm not sure how that function works but that's what I hear. I'm thinking of upgrading in the near future.. we'll see. Thanks for your feedback my friend!
Basic model's bullion wand can penetrate 1.5mm of metal depth. You can circumvent this limitation by testing the coin/bar at both sides (front and bottom). For 10oz bar, it is sufficient.
@@ly8370 Good point, I do the same for my coins being tested directly on the Sigma.. just an extra step but in theory I think it would benefit to do it for the reasons you just explained. Thank you very much for your input!
Great video on how to test. Wow that is a good fake Morgan.
Thanks brother, I thought the same exact thing... had the same dimensions, weighed about the same, good fake for sure!
Well I must say I was disappointed with the ambiguous results on the PMV machine. This is the first I've heard of this problem. I have been considering getting a Sigma, does this means you have to buy the deluxe machine to be able to distinguish among the coins you showed? As far as I'm concerned, there is absolutely no way you can be in the bullion business or even be a serious collector/stacker without one of these machines or access to same. The specific gravity test is also not 100% foolproof. There are some alloys of pewter that will SG out in the mid-10's just like silver.
In order to test for specific gravity, the higher end model (such as the pro) would be needed but in my opinion, it's not worth the extra $1k-$2k unless of course you're thinking of becoming a coin dealer as you stated. As for me... I'll stick to testing using the tools I already have (Precision Scale, Calipers (To test dimensions of a coin), Magnets, and a pingtester. Although some fakes can pass certain tests, like the specific gravity, they won't be able to pass all the tests (i.e. weight, dimensions, magnetic, etc). Thank you very much for your feedback and comments my friend!
Man, what's up with YT not telling me when you put out videos??
Doesn't surprise me lol I don't think they are very happy with me hahaha. Thanks for dropping by brother!
@@S.G.T.Stacking They don't like me either.
So is the next one up above the pmv better? Or the more expensive ones. And not just better, does it actually work good?
The next above would probably be the new model called, "Investor" and I'm pretty it has more advanced capabilities. I know the Sigma Pro definitely is much better with specific gravity capabilities.
Bestbwaynto donsilver is ice if it melts super fast its real if it melts faster than useual its probably 90 percent or lower fater better purity and u density test it and gold and get the equations weigh an 8 ounce cup of water write it down then drop your gold in and weigh it again and divide the first by the second youll get your answer
It's a 10yo technology with no option of a database update (unlike Pro and Investor).
Do tell us more, please.

Happy 4th to you as well my friend! 🇺🇲💪👊

I thought so too... made me wonder why even have the option but then I thought, they may just use the same hardware/motherboard for all the units.. and just added extra options from the pro. Idk 🤷♂️

Hey J! I left a link in the description to this video for the pocket pinger. I would buy it directly from the manufacturer or if you find someone in the community with an affiliate link so they benefit from the purchase, that would also be a great. Unfortunately I don't have an affiliate link but that's what I would do. As a matter of fact, I believe Patriotic Stacker has a link, let me go search for it and I'll post on this comment.
Here you go, here's Patriotic Stacker's affiliate link to the pocket pinger:

Lol man, talk about attention to detail! Good catch! @S.G.T.Stacking I was testing some
.999 Gold Bar's and put a regular quarter on it and it read it as Gold lol
Yeah, that doesn't make sense at all! About to try that see what kind of results I get. Thanks for letting me know!
@S.G.T.Stacking as far as 90% Silver it will read 90% on about anything I will throw on there
Yeah, I noticed that too.
U have to know the math tho on the density of gold and silver
Would this be good for gold nuggets
I wouldn't recommend buying one for that. I would just take the nuggets to a coin shop to get tested. This machine is meant more for bullion.
Use the sigmapro or use the excess
I figured either one of those models would do the trick, I'll have to check those out some day! Thanks for stopping in my friend!
What if you used a wand?
There was another person that suggested the same but unfortunately it yielded the same results (at least with the fake Morgan and real one). Great suggestion though, thank you!
Gotta remember this although I don't stack 40s 0r 90s, might be a day when I need to test them. I buy mostly graded coins and the only test for .999 or .9999 silver is the Sigma.
For sure! Get yourself a precision scale for $20 or so and a ping tester and you're good to go to test 90% silver. I haven't ran into TOO many issues testing .999 and .9999 Silver Bullion on the Sigma, so I'm happy about that. Thanks for stopping by!

Yeah, I'll be upgrading very soon!
Ive seen a video that a sigma was saying a fake gold coin was real and one where the sigma said real gold was fake so who knows what's resesitivity
I haven't seen one myself but I'm sure that has happened. For this reason, I believe the Sigma should not be the only form of testing a person does. It's just an added layer of security. I will say this though, I don't believe any fake gold or silver bar/coin would be able to pass ALL the following tests: weight, resistivity, dimensions (of specs are known), and specific gravity. A good fake might pass 2 of the 4.. but not all of them. That's just my take though, thanks for stopping in and sharing your thoughts!
@@S.G.T.Stacking oh yeah no doubt they wouldn't pass the gravity one lolo or the density one of it isn't the gravity one your talking about may be same lolo
@martywebb1487 lol they are related concepts but a bit different. Density is ratio of the mass (weight) to volume of a substance and specific gravity is weight of a sample, at a given temperature, divided by the weight of the same volume of water, at the same temperature or a different specified temperature.
