They both have a very similar setting (space). They both have a lot of humanoid races (which is definitely not because the actors are humanoid). They both have space craft. That shot from Star Wars where they show the ship passing over the camera is clearly a ripoff from the Star Trek shot where they show the ship passing over the camera (which is totally not a common Sci-Fi trope). The comparisons are endless.

In the early 2000s I wrote a story about a villain who had a weird magical eye that they hid behind their long hair. They invited a bunch of people with powers to their private island to fight until only the strongest was left so they could fight that person and take their powers. I got a lot of good feedback online with this story until Yu-Gi-Oh season 1 came out them suddenly people who can across my story accused me of plagiarism. Even though in my story the villain was female, the eye belonged to a demon that was possessing her. And my story was dated before Yu-Gi-Oh premiered. It was really frustrating

I started off thinking that Kimba is a young children's show, that changed more and more over the course of this video. God, I wish more people got that message inside their thick skulls. It would literally solve 90% of petty internet arguments we see everywhere, especially social media.
Though in the Kimba/Lion King case, it would have been difficult because YMS illustrated how much of the "research" for this topic is flatout wrong. One of the examples he used in people getting it wrong was *a TED Talk*. There comes a point where it's really hard to get to the bottom of stuff.

The craziest thing to me was the line after, something like "Aw shucks, too bad the elephants were so bad, otherwise they didn't have to be exterminated." Like... Not to mention that this one part talking about how Africa is awakening and needs to be civilised makes it clear that all this is an allegory for Africa after colonialism, in the process of forming nation states and "civilising themselves". The "funny" thing is that it's exclusive to the American dub. In fact, most of Kimba's disturbing and/or offensive aspects shown in this video are only found in the old American dub of Kimba.

Firstly, when it comes to anime, most people will inevitably be only familiar with the English dub, so you can't exactly dismiss English dubs of anime as insignificant little edits of the original XD Like it or not, the English localization will have a massive impact on how people view it. And secondly, America didn't alter 1965's Jungle Emperor Leo to make it about an enlightened white lion raised by humans trying to civilize the savage animals of Africa. A few more blatantly colonialist lines added in the English dub don't add much to the issue. Or all the blackface and child abuse present in the second series, that was Japan's decision XD
You should see the sequel series, Onward Leo. It's essentially a Japanese minstrel show XD

Which is hardly surprising, given the poor treatment given to Japanese animation in the US (Sailor Moon, DBZ, Battle of the Planets, Knights of the Zodiac, Princess Mononoke, etc.).
The story of Jungle Emperor is about a white lion king naively trying to "civilize" the animals living on his domain... and failing miserably. It also involves humans, mostly white settlers, who foolishly think they can "beat" and "tame" Africa... and fail miserably. That's the message conveyed in the original dub. That you should respect Mother Nature and all creatures.
Onward, Leo! is also butchered in the American dub. Raiya, for example, never says in Japanese that Leo hitting his son is no big deal. In the original dub, she's mad at Leo and tears him a new one. In the original dub, the natives speak in normal, unaccented Japanese, whereas they speak in broken English in the US dub (same thing with Killer in DBZ: the Americans apparently found it hilarious and perfectly acceptable in the late 90s to have a black character talk gibberish).
Besides, dated and offensive racial stereotypes due to sheer ignorance (the Japanese simply copying what they saw in Western productions because they didn't know any better in those days, having never seen someone from a different ethnicity in real life) doesn't make Kimba a "minstrel show", seeing as there is no malice and no deliberate intention of dehumanizing and mocking the natives...
In both cases it's terribly offensive, but for different reasons...

Most people, really? Japanese animation has been popular in lots of countries around the world for a long time now, sometimes since the 70s especially in Europe.
Not everybody commenting here is American or familiar with the English dub of Kimba.
I personally watched Kimba in French first, then in German, then a bit in Italian and Spanish, then in English, and finally in Japanese.
I was floored - and horrified - when I saw how different the US dub was, with tons of offensive stuff, altered dialogues, made up lines and whatnot that are either totally absent from the other foreign dubs (including the original Japanese one), or at least much more nuanced.
I understand why Adum found Kimba highly offensive, and I would probably be offended too if my sole exposure to the old TV show from the 60s was the shitty American dub in which they say that white lions are inherently superior and therefore natural born leaders, that the elephants kind of deserved to be exterminated because they were mean, or that it's high time for the dark continent to abandon voodoo mask and silly superstitions and to finally embrace civilisation... But that was not my personal experience with Kimba.

I think something to remember is that they were TV cartoons and not theatre-level motion pictures so you have to think of something more like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, not early Disney.

Leo is known as Leo in a lot of countries around the world, and the controversy happened in those countries, too. And back then, there was no internet or youtube with misleading comparative videos
Heck, here in France lots of people started pointing out the similarities as soon as the movie came out in 1994, and it had nothing to do with the character's name. That being said, we just had a complete rerun of the 78 original episodes of "Le roi Leo" on French television between 1989 and 1990, on a very popular kids show. So, it was still fresh in people's minds, not like in the US where people said TLK reminded them of that old cartoon they used to watch in the 60s.

He's the one who began that Childhood Trauma trend, and a lot of people don't realize it. I think that after a while, this video will cause the Kimba Conspiracy to die out. There's a fallacy called the a priori fallacy, where people work backwards in logic: instead of observing premises and drawing a conclusion, they draw a conclusion and find premises to support it. In this case it's obvious that the Kimba crowd decided Lion King was a rip-off *before* viewing the evidence, twisted the facts to support this, and then tricked a bunch of people into thinking similarly through manipulation and outright lies.
The moral of the story is, next time you see a story about how someone you hate did something obviously evil, try not to assume it's true just because it reinforces your pre-existing hatred of that person or entity.

"How could a group of world-class Disney animators not know this anime?" This is hard to believe for anyone born after 1980, but old anime used to have a VERY different reputation in the west
Disney's animators and employees already knew about Hayao Miyazaki in the 80s, when he was virtually unknown in the West in those days, save for a few hardcore animefans and animation buffs.
*THE* reference back then was Osamu Tezuka (and he still is today, although to a lesser extent), and Leo/Kimba was one of his most iconic characters along with Mighty Atom/Astro Boy, Black Jack and Sapphire/Princess Knight.
What you seem to forget, is that when Tezuka passed away in 1989, absolutely _everybody_ working in the animation business heard about it. Just like they heard about the last two projects he was working on before his untimely death: an adaptation of the Old Testament, commissioned by the Vatican, and a remake of Jungle Taitei/Kimba the white lion.

Old 60s anime was seen as lower than low TV filller, and a lot of previously had prejudice by old guard really came to light in the 00s when anime actually started to eat at their share of the market

The Americans working in the animation business in the 80s and 90s knew about the works of the world's most renowned animators, such as Osamu Tezuka, Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki for Japan, the Wan brothers for China, Paul Grimault and René Laloux for France, Ivan Ivanov-Vano for Russia, or Karel Zeman and Jiri Trnka for the Czech Republic.
Which doesn't mean that they _liked_ said works by foreign animators/directors, but they were perfectly aware of what was happening in the animation industry outside of the United States.

Law Professors aren't really members of academia in the same way that other professors are. Law Schools are professional school, you don't learn how to conduct research outside of issues of law.
Additionally, books don't really go through peer review in the same way that an article will. It's the responsibility of the author and their publisher to be responsible, and obviously no one except for a select group of furries know enough about Kimba to refute the part of her book that talks about Kimba and the Lion King.
And yeah, don't cite Wikipedia. It's the sources in Wikipedia that you want to draw from. Your teachers weren't stupid for trying to make you do the right thing. The failure belongs to Madhavi Sunder for making baseless claims.

First time watching i checked the time I was already an hour in, that's how you know it's good
I actually did watch a few Kimba episodes a while back because of the controversy. The Lion King is my favorite animated movie of all time (largely due to Scar) and being told that it was a blatant rip-off of an older anime just made me curious about what was apparently The Lion King in anime form. After watching a few episodes, it was clear that they weren’t anything alike. I did still try to watch it for its own merit, but it just wasn’t for me.

I'm so glad someone else also had this reaction. I remember when I was little I was obsessed with the lion king and it's sequels. I probably saw older kimba vs lion king videos while looking up clips of the movies, and started watching kimba stuff on youtube because I was under the impression it was practically more lion king content. I think I only saw the 1991 ova film and then like 5 episodes of the og series before I got bored lmao

For me, I love Lion King and I know Disney is prone to taking influence from others, but I just kind of dismissed it because I’m gonna be honest the anime crowd resorts to plagiarism/ripoff allegations all the time. And they try to be possessive of genres in its entirety, especially sci-fi, or just think anime series/art exist in isolation. For example I’m a huge fan of Gerry Anderson and its a fact that Hideaki Anno took inspiration from him, something that i think a lot of weebs would be unwilling to recognise lest it tarnish their idea of anime as wholly unique. Idk the Kimba controversy always seemed dicy, i mean seriously when you see the two posters of a white and a yellow lion trying to bait you into outrage its just ridiculous, no one can patent a fucking cartoon about lions and the savannah, thats one of the most popular settings i can think of for children’s media.

A year late but this is where delivery is almost crucial to how a line is interpreted. How I image the line was meant to be was that he was adding more insults like "Wait, He's not just a coward. He's a *blind whimpering* coward!".
Thought it does add a nice funny aspect that the leopard was trying to think of something more scathing but backpedaled hard haha
Old video so I probably won't get any replies, but as you can tell from my icon, I am a big fan of Tezuka's works-and these types of fans that claim "omge lion king ripoff kimba" kind of drive me mad. They make such insane judgements without even consuming the media? I've seen it for other franchises too, like how people who have barely even seen other 60s superhero anime claim they're all ripping off Astro Boy because of a few miniscule similarities.
I don't really watch this guy's videos, but I enjoyed someone actually researching into the series to debunk this myth once and for all. Would love to see more video essays like this on debunking movie/show misconceptions.
I feel like the difference between 'homage', 'inspired by', 'ripped off' all comes down to how you feel about the original media and how you feel about the later media.

Yeah, isn't it amazing how the Americans entirely rewrote the dialogues and added tons of offensive stuff such as pro-racism, pro-colonialism, pro-white supremacy, pro-animal genocide, pro-child abuse messages that are either totally absent from the original Japanese dub, or ar least much more nuanced?

I never expected the message to be that the elephants deserved it.
The Lion King would have been a much better movie if Simba dragged Mufasa's corpse with him everywhere he went and all the other characters pretended this was completely normal. And he kept talking to it and acting like his father was still alive. I think it would have been the most disturbing yet darkly hilarious movie to come out of Disney.
Then Timon and Pumba puppeteer it from the inside to give Simba a stern talking to.
