@damian martinez I heard a positive review compare Dae-Su to a feral cat and Brolin to a raging Bull. They liked that aspect of it and respected the reinterpretation presenting him as pretty different than what came before.
Not saying its right or wrong, but I think that kind of change could have made for a different fight dynamic. Less martial arts and more brute force (but the movie's not too good so I guess we're not getting that haha).

And when he seeks his revenge, he's never cool and stoic. He's always just some guy, plus 1 fresh crazy pill. You never ever ever see what he's doing as cool or inspirational. A quick side note:
In the original manga, the protagonist goes captive for ten years. Park added five for a reason. The limitation period on first degree murder was 15 years in Korea back then. Oh was framed for killing his wife, and there is a scene Lee sending Oh a chat message stating his false charge has been lifted (56:34). This period had been extended to 25 years in 2007, and finally gone limitless in 2015.
    A simple question:
Why the hell did Spike Lee extend another five?

The sad part about the hammer fight in the remake is that it’s completely divorced of context. In the original the reason it’s a total melee is because guns are very scarce in South Korea so thugs would just have whatever they can find. In America those thugs would absolutely have guns but it’s Oldboy so gotta have a hammer fight I guess. Same with the dumplings. Korea is a country with strict gun laws. Korean police don't try to force the gangs down, they try to manage them (because even if they do, another organization will be formed). However, if a gangster uses a gun, the military, not the police, will be dispatched to clear it up, so Korean gangsters cannot use a gun even if they have it.

In the Korean version, there was also the massive implication of how strong Lee Woo-Jin’s drive was. You see him and Oh Dae-Su grew up in an impoverished town. Knowing that Woo-Jin was able to work his way up into the riches using his own revenge as motivation is so much more palpable and lends greatly to his character without having to explicitly say anything.
In the American version, the villain already comes from a rich family and his stupid ploy for revenge just seems even more petty.

The thing about Woo Jin is that, as Adam points out, if you forget about the fact that the girl was his sister, you can kinda almost sympathize with him. I mean, yes, that's obviously a pretty big fucking thing to overlook, but the point is that if you took the incest out of the equation you can kinda understand his point of view. Whereas in the American version, you literally can't take the incest out of the equation because it's no longer a story of two people the same age who love each other, it's a story of a grown man fucking his underage children and eventually trying to murder them. The idea that you could ever remotely empathize with this villain, even on a "he's still a psycho but I kinda get why he's upset" level, is just ludicrous.

Woo-jin was a compelling villain because he is basically the protagonist of his own revenge story, from his persepctive Dae-su seems like the one who caused his sister's death and ruined Woo-jin's life, we the audience only think differently because the story is told from the persepctive of Dae-su. Really Woo-jin did nothing to deserve what happened, yea he slept with his sister but it was a mutually consensual relationship where they both loved each other, it's not even comparable to Spike Lee's version.

Ya know, if you're like me, and you root more for Oh Dei Su on repeat viewings than Woo-Jin...there's ONE little detail that makes up for all the crap the villain inflicted on the hero: when he hears someone from his sisters year in school, a classmate of hers, one she didn't even KNOW, call her a SLUT...that look on his face tells me Od Dei Su got the better of him; because no matter what. no matter how much Woo-Jin attempts to destroy this mans life...his sister will ALWAYS, to her generation of kids, in that school, be known as the school-house WHORE. 😂 I kind of hate Woo-Jinn really...i think he's a smug oily little baby. but i guess that's what makes the film great: Oh De Su starts things as a "villain" and because of Woo-Jin's plot against him, he actually becomes a better man; in the process the sweet and confused child who only made the mistake of falling in love with his sister then becomes an even greater monster than Oh De Su ever was.

It is also a reference to the myth of Oedipus, in which Oedipus stabs his own eyes out after finding out that he murdered his father and killed his mothrr.
Just as Oedipus cannot bear to see a world where fate has made him a kinslayer and his children the victims of incest, Daesu does not think he can continue to speak when he could potentially tell Mi-do the truth.

kinda late to comment on this one but when watching the original the penny started to drop right when woo jin said the real question was "why did he let me go after 15 years". it all came together in my head. the theme of incest in the antagonist's motive. the fact mi do was younger, and not only did he recognize her from tv, she recognized him. how dae su had a baby daughter old enough to talk on the phone, she had to be at least 3. 15 years was just enough for his daughter to be of legal age.
woo jin really said "incest is fine with me, but i draw the line at pedophilia"

I was so enthralled by your in-depth analysis of the original old boy, that I would honestly forget you were comparing it to the remake. So anytime you transitioned to Spike Lee's version I would instantly grow disappointed because I just wanted to see more the original. If I have that feeling during a CZcams review I can only imagine how disappointing watching the entire remake must be.

For real, not only is this video a YMS Review for OldBoy (2013) is also a a great review and analysis of Oldboy (2003). I watched the original when I was 14 and stupid, and I thought it was just "alright". I never revisited the film because "I already know the twist, so what's the point?" but Adam really showed why it's a great film and it's not just because of the twist, the entire thing is a beautifully crafted and well-acted movie.

One detail that I really appreciated about the scene where Oh Dae-su tries to force himself through the feeding door of his prison is just how effortless the guard handles it. The way he manages to force Oh Dae-su back into his cell and then close the door/seal the latch using only his feet and without saying a word conveys a lot of information in a really simple an seamless way. For Oh Dae-su his world has been turned completely upside down, but for the guard this is just another day in a job he's seemingly done hundreds if not thousands of times before Oh Dae-su even arrived. It's the first hint we get that these are not amateurs and that while Oh Dae-su is the main focus, he likely isn't the only prisoner, which also teases the fact that his jailers might not be the ones with a vendetta, but rather some sort of weird and twisted business.

Woo-Jin's flashback calls back to Dae-Su's beginning on the rooftop. They each hold onto someone who is trying to kill themself and also bare a resemblance to them (the man on the roof is in a suit with wild hair, Woo-Jin is holding his own sister). The pure white puppy represents the unborn child of Woo-Jin, an innocent, sinless life taken absolutely needlesly. The original film is fucking genius

    Quote from Polish reviewer:
"God forbid, don't watch the American remake first (...). Anything that can go wrong with remakes, taking someone's brilliant idea and masterpiece and making it your own, with no creativity at all and in the most disgustingly trashy way - that's the situation. I recommend checking the remake after watching the original, like because you already know this one, and you want to laugh at the other; as something like an autopsy, you want to see the corpse and discover what went wrong."
