l agree with Lucy1934. l've said it before, and l make no apology for saying it again, lf you two were teaching in schools, all the pupils would be A+ students. The detail in the answer about the amount of land needed to support a certain number of bees must have taken a lot of study and it shows how much you care about giving us all the low-down so we can understand too. 👏👏 xx

Did not notice shadow on last video. But with your bringing to attention, figured it out. The shadow on your leg gives the direction to the sun and as a result, orients proper compass position. The angle of shadow on leg gives the compass vector, and the shadow length gives the distance up to 3 miles. 😂

You don't know me from Adam (I'm probably much taller, if you ever see us together you'll know which one is me) but I can see us sitting around enjoying a cuppa, or at the pub, I'll have a half of lemonade. A year or so back... I dropped by a craft center, during a trip in Queensland (Australia), The center sold locally produced honey. I noted that a number of the jars had *"Bee Vomit"* printed on their label. 🐝
They also sold jars of picked onions, some of these were labeled *"Fart Plums"* 🥺

Colin, fascinating what you say about the number of bees and how far they forage.
I used to live in Lewisham, south-east London to you, perhaps. On the face of it not a great place for bees perhaps? But in fact within that three mile radius, there was Black Heath, Greenwich Park, Ladywell Park, Beckenham Place Park, Crystal Palace Park, Dulwich Park, many smaller parks and gardens, and loads of street trees, many of them limes (Tilia, so not sure how that works, lime trees make lovely honey), so in fact there was tons of bee food around. So much so that there was locally produced honey for sale in our local "Whole Food" shop. Not such amazing scenary though!
Nice explanation - though I think some of your botanical 'facts' may not be strictly correct..
Yeah, I noticed the shadow too! And you are so right about that 'special' suit. Seared is the word!

Really interesting vlog Colin & Shaun. My gt aunt had a huge apiary in nz and used to sell her honey internationally in the 60’s. Listening to you I could feel her around as a spirit. Have been interested in how it works since you started having hives. Feel sad the bee died that stung me back in April. The stinger was huge, had to go to a chemist and get them to pull it out. Was on my eyelid. Have a late question - why do they sting people for instance ? Take care 🩷🩷🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️

This was very, very interesting information on bees and the hives. Maybe bees recognize your particular scent/pheromones? I've gone out to my little pollinator garden and watch the bees from a distance. Your explanation of the number of bees an area could support if fascinating and I wonder about my community in Arlington Virginia because the county has offered hives for people to raise bees.

Having kept bees for over 50 years I have conclude that bees come to know the beekeeper from his or her body odour. That is why strong perfumes or aftershaves should be avoided, as I found to my cost when first starting with bees and using Brut,
it attracted the women but angered every hive in my apiary.
