Written and presented by Steve Hewlett, the series is told principally through the first-hand testimony of those who were there: ex-royal advisors, editors, photographers, journalists, royal correspondents - and an enormously rich archive.
This episode looks at how the experience of growing up in the media spotlight has affected Princes William and Harry, and their attitudes to the press and media. Seismic events like the phone-hacking scandal - which started with the royal princes - and the impact of the Leveson Inquiry that followed have tipped the balance of power in their favour.
The relationship between the royal family and the BBC is also examined, the so-called 'Queengate' fiasco - where a trailer for a royal documentary was cut as if to show the Queen storming out of a photo session with the American photographer Annie Leibowitz. The programme recounts how, in the aftermath, another still-unseen documentary celebrating the life of Princess Diana was shelved by the corporation.
The programme also looks at the question of succession. For Prince Charles it is now not so much his private life as his personal views that are under the microscope, and their potential impact on his upcoming kingship is explored.
The British Royal Family is a global institution, admired and celebrated around the world and currently enjoying a revival in popular opinion.
From the pomp and pageantry of the Cambridges' fairytale wedding, through to the birth of Prince George, the announcement of another royal baby, and most recently, the success of Prince Harrys Invictus Games, there is a new generation of Royals on show. Unlike all their predecessors the young Royals appear comfortable with the cameras relaxed, informal and self-deprecating. The message is a new monarchy for a new age.
It is all a far cry from the nightmare of the 1990s where, throughout the so called war of the Waleses, the bitter divisions within the family played out in the full glare of the worlds media. Indeed so acrimonious were the rivalries, they threatened to undermine and destabilise the entire institution.
But it was the tragic and untimely death of Princess Diana in 1997 that would prove to be the nadir of the familys relationship with the press and public. Widely perceived to have played a part in her tragic death, it also marked a turning point for the press and media. Something had to change.
Through interviews with those directly involved on all sides, writer, broadcaster and Guardian journalist Steve Hewlett tells the inside story of how the Royal family set about rehabilitating its battered public image following that devastating decade in this two-part landmark series.

That sort of constant attention would drive me to be ducking into bathrooms to hide (and probably cry). I feel bad for them. I have always valued my alone time (outdoor alone time).
I for one have never been obsessed with these folks. Just occasional videos every few years...when I’m bored and they pop up, so I can say I’m happy to have a life. It’s too bad some are totally obsessed with the lives of others. Celebrities as well. I mean they are not more interesting than what’s in front of us (our families, pets, work....). I wish these young men and their families more peace than what they clearly grew up with.
In my opinion,it seems to be the aim of the 4th estate to be in the vanguard of the demise of the Monarchy(I would even venture to say, carelessly & perhap unwittingly undermining democracy everywhere as well). Firstly, its intense hunger & thirst for every drop & tittle of information, scrutiny & intrusion into lives & all things surrounding the Monarchy & the Royal Family. Is there a point where they benefit from some privacy? They then spin to stir up opposition/support depending on what they want to convey or achieve. Secondly, I think the 4th estate has become so caught up in the hype of trading trash & seemingly with no professional body, capable of providing wisdom & guidance to the host of so-called journalist who are part of the proliferation of today's media, it is running amok. Hope when the real change comes the 4th estate in the WEST will fare better than the 4th estates in Russia, China & Turkey etc!

People are demanding more public "view" of the wife of Prince Harry as if she is the future Queen of the realm. That focus should be on Camilla and Catherine-future Queens. Prince Harry in the future may not rank in the top 10 in line to the throne as Prince George and his siblings, families will be the key nucleus to sustain the Royal Family in the 21st century.

Please, can people learn about the history of the deal that gives them money from the government. They don't just get it, it was a monarch quite far back that wasn't making profit enough off his lands so made a deal with the government that they ran it, kept the profits, and in return paid the monarchy an amount for it. This makes us MORE MONEY than what we give to the monarchs. Charlies has said he wants to get rid of the deal to shut up this kind of talk, but that would make us lose money. You can still be anti-monarchist don't get me wrong, but please learn more about why we actually pay them. Tourism and their charity work is just an extra topping.
@@paulagardner2708 Mate, no. London is incredible and with sooooooo much available, other cities like Edinburgh are beautiful too, cute English rural towns are everywhere. Other European countries that no longer house monarchs, just having the architecture alone is sufficient for a lot of tourism - take Versailles. They do bring tourism, but you are wildly overstating it that tourism wouldn't exist without them. This comes from a strong monarchist who sees them as a benefit to my country, but certainly, we are not dependent on them. Plus like countries like the U.S. our biggest industries are not tourism, finances and banking are our biggest export.

I like the Royal family, but I'm inclined to agree that as times are changing and we move into a more modern age, where there is becoming more emphasis on equalizing people more and getting rid of this class divide etc, its inevitable that the royal family will be done away with, as well as granting people titles etc. That all human life will be of equal value, no bowing and curtsying, no one talking down to anyone etc, no one above anyone, not even in a place of work. Speaking and treating each other as equal human beings. Need to also minimise the yawning gap between highest paid and lower paid. Give workers shares in companies, so people become co owners etc, all possible.

Charles can't stand to be around noisy children. He hardly spent any time at all with his own sons until their mother died. It is not a popularity contest. The crown will go to Charles and Camilla and when Charles dies, only then it will go to William. As much as I like certain members of the royal family, one does wonder why in this modern day and age why we have them, considering they no longer have the power to rule, have to be neutral and not get politically involved. The queen has to sign political documents, and bills passed in Parliament whether or not she approves etc, so yes what is the point of having a monarchy with zero powers. They do charitable causes, cut ribbons, attend functions etc, but I don't feel its enough to condone the huge upkeep of the royal family. That they need to down scale a lot at least.

I loved the videos of Harry in Africa. He really had his heart in his work. Now, it seems like his wife has released all of the hatred and anger he has ever felt and directed it towards the public, the media and those who have loved him the most. My own son married a woman who suffers from NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder). She has effectively isolated him from his family and his roots. He is an angry soul now also. These changes are heartbreaking to see, so I understand Britain’s grief over losing their golden child to someone whose influence has been perfectly awful. What can you do?
