    I was always surprised that the Traitors had ANY Astartes left by the time they got to Terra. Through the Purges, Dropsite Massacre, Shadow Crusade, Solar War and the numerous battles on the way they should have been down barely any left. Istvaan V alone should have dramatically reduced their numbers.
    ×EDIT× - Did mean III and not V. My mistake. Lump the 2 battles together though and the SOH, EC, WE and DG lost a LOT of Astartes - plus the 3 Loyalists on V being virtually wiped out that's 7 Legions getting their shit pushed in. WE then went on the Shadow Crusade with the WB which would have reduced their numbers dramatically. There should have only been a few thousand of those mad bastards left by the time they got to Terra.

    You know, it might be fun, if not already a video I just missed, to see how the CSMs actually recoup losses? It takes a certain kind of man to survive gene-seed implantation, and certain resources, yet the gene-seed of many Chaos Marines must be slag in their bodies, now, even though that's what makes them Space Marines, and none of their Legions seem calm, and level enough to be dedicated crafting replacement/subsequent gear of a level needed to be a Space Marine. How do they find bodies, while raiding planets weak enough to crush, and then gene-seed that is like theirs, and gear that wasn't just waiting for the last gut to die, to be foisted off upon his replacement? How do Chaos Marines make more Chaos Marines?
    It's also weird that Chaos doesn't more often press their strengths. They basically exist in a bastion their enemies can't engage them in, all while those enemies have umpteen other distractions. Since time is weird, in the Warp, one might think that they'd spend whatever time they need, build a HUGE force, and cough it out RELATIVE TO THE IMPERIUM, where it would then steamroll them. They can also just cough out swathes of Daemons anywhere, even on Holy Terra, if Khorne feels like it, so apart from the old jewelry "that's not the victory Chaos actually wants", it's weird that victory has eluded them, unless their "gods" are a lot more limited than they'd like us to know.😊

    • @ifritslily7991
      @ifritslily7991 Před měsícem +15

      You have a point for Chaos using the Warp's weird time to their advantage, but Chaos cannot just spit out demons anywhere. That's because the Emperor is preventing them from doing so. When Korne spat out his hordes on Terra in the battle of the Lion's Gate, the Emperor was knocked out by the psychic backlash caused by the opening of the Great Rift.

      Don't forget like orks they're constantly fighting each other, even if one builds a huge force the other 3 will gang up on them, and even undivided are constantly back stabbing each other, as for the CSM recoup losses its complicated, they steal stable gene seed or corrupt new marines, otherwise I imagine the gods bring them back from death like Khorne did with tuska daemon-killa, plus you have to keep in mind Tzeentch is the one who instigates the undivided alliance whenever they work together but he explicitly doesn't want chaos to win, at the very least steamroll.

    The idea that the Dark Angels lost only 10-20% is ridiculous. Assuming fairly minimal casualties in the Thramas Crusade - something that seems unlikely, when Master Belath tells Luther of "many battles and many slain brothers" - the Lion gave Corswain "half" the legion to persecute the war against Typhon, and Corswain sustained heavy losses. This is before the stand on Terra, and not counting any losses the Lions forces took securing Ultramar against the Shadow Crusade, or traversing the Ruinstorm, or bringing his Crusade of Wrath to the traitors homeworlds.
    The only way to mitigate the losses are to count the 60,000 recruits from Caliban... whose loyalty is questionable... and the assumption that the I Legion would have drawn on the resources of Ultramar during Imperium Secundus

    Here's some to consider:
    What if all of the Primarchs (save Alpharius because he landed on Terra) somehow died before the Imperium discovered them? (Assume that Vulkan was never found by the Imperium, maybe he was lost in the Warp, maybe the DE got a hold of him, maybe he’s in Trazyn’s galleries, etc). The important thing is, what if no Primarchs?
    If any one Loyalist and Traitor Primarch switched sides for the Horus Heresy, who would you choose for the best outcome for either the Loyalists, or the Traitors?
    What if the Silent King never got rid of his Command Protocols and took (almost) all the Necrons with him out of the galaxy to perhaps find a new and better one and come across the Tyranids?
    What if the Great Crusade had all the Primarchs and none turned Traitor, but there were no Astartes?
    What if the Beast Orks succeeded in defeating the Imperium?
    What if the Raptor Project succeeded/was never sabotaged?
    How would each Heresy/Crusade-era Primarch and Legion fare against the modern Tau Empire?

They are known as the Thrice-Cursed Traitors and are made up of all the Sons of Horus that have rejected Abaddon and the Black Legion, remaining true to Horus' memory or rejecting all masters. Only like four of them were given names and Abaddon forcibly absorbed two them as well as other nameless ones because he wants his brothers under his command but warbands like the True Sons and the Wolves of Horus are still around, keeping the Sons of Horus alive past Abaddon's creation of the Black Legion

    If you look at recruitment and desertion, technically the Iron Warriors had the most and least damage. Given that over a third of the Iron Warriors deserted at the time of the Horus Hersey since they were gathered 5-20 marines to hold positions on conquered planets in small pockets. They were mostly loyal to the emperor.
    The traitor forces also had one of the highest turn over rates, if vat grown clones are counted. If you do count vat grown clones as marines, they easily reach a million marines in causalities. The reason that they were seemingly unaffected is that they replaced their numbers far faster than the other legions with their for the most part uncorrupt geneseed. Also the loyalists joined up with the shattered legions, but I am not sure if count their deaths as Iron warriors or Shattered legions.

    • @alexbrinzan9061
      @alexbrinzan9061 Před měsícem +1

      You got a typo there, pretty sure you meant if the fall of cadia didnt happen, well depending on a lot of factors, either maintaining the status quo whitch would be bad cuz the imperium would be fuked, or turn into a complete stomp that kills abbadon,the Blackstone fortress is recovered and thus can be traded to our pokeball master necron for some spicy tech or used by imperium to get an even stronger foothold,meaning that the imperium could potentially avoid the slowly dying part. All in all tho thanks to the primarchs coming back its actually a good thing it happened cuz it also gave the emperor a power boost to actually do stuff more coherently.

    • @alexbrinzan9061
      @alexbrinzan9061 Před měsícem +1

      Also if the imperium joined forces with the t'au and eldar whicth is very unlikely it wouldnt do a whole lot other than maybe improving planetary defense forces and giving the guard better equipment cuz you have to remember that chaos,orcs and nids are attacking arlcoss the galaxy and the eldar and t'au are very small în numbers and thus wouldnt do much other than I some important fights. Orcs could maybe be taken out if they manage to destroy ghazskull along his waaaagh on Armageddon witch is where most orcs are în the curent setting witch would open up the production of the world, manpower and allow them to focus on the remaining orks , then chaos and nids. For the chaos and nids you cant really do a whole lot since like I sau they attack across the galaxy tho if the necrons help out with the nids in this speculative scenario then I could see them winning the setting. Tho only after they Unite one last time to defeat the necrons since they would inevitably fight.

    more important than the rate of attrition the legions had to face was the ability to replace losses with combat ready forces as well as the swiftness of their deployment in the field. the success of powerful legions also depends on their recruiting bases, armory production and supply lines.
    can have the highest casualty rates in the galaxy, if a unit is still well managed during deployment, they remain functional. ultramarines and iron warriors are the best example for handling high casualty rates due to their stability.

    I read some of the larger hive worlds have a quadrillion + people on them. If they could mobilize 10% of that (less than major powers in ww2), then they would outnumber all the space marines in the galaxy something like 50,000 - 100,000 to 1. That's just 1 world, so just seems obscenely low to me

      Emperor's Children seem to be the legion who most benefit not falling to Chaos. They were useless after everyone was on the space co-co and silk sheets. The dark angels had a total of 180k marines at the start of the heresy, the dark angels were scattered around the galaxy thanks to horus ordering them away. The lion came to ultramar with roughly 20k to 30k marines. Corswain would have a similar amount with him but only got to terra with 10k marines. There were also roughly 40k dark angels in caliban. The blood angels had 120k , the ultramarines had roughly 116k killed at calth and another 28k crippled. That left the ultrmarines with little over 110k marines after calth, with 30k of those marines staying behind on calth.

    The Salamanders are so cool and the most human Space Marines, it's sad they got wrecked so bad even in the current setting they probably only have 1,100 Marines in the chapter because of Primaris additions. The Night Lords and World Eaters are my favorite Traitor Legions because in a way it is easy to understand why they turned traitor. The Night Lords were a bunch of killers, murders, and sadists before the Heresy and had have stayed true to what they were before the Heresy, plus the best Chaos Space Marine Omnibus. The World Eaters are what you see is what you get and Angron had the best reason to turn traitor. It is still crazy how brutal the Horus Heresy was and how many Legions were broken during and have the Heresy.

      I think the legion numbers make sense with how many resources it takes to make space marines. Where GW gets the numbers terribly wrong is the guard. If you add a zero to the number of guardsmen in almost any battle, it makes more sense. There should be tens of millions of gaurdsmen involved in any large battle or siege.

    • @HubiKoshi
      @HubiKoshi Před měsícem +2

      Logistical issues maybe? This Was the early Imperium where they were conquering planets and only starting to set up their industrial and logistical systems. There were definitely limits on how fast they could produce everything that Astartes needed including the production of geneseed. The fact that they had to go through Mechanicus for all that probably didn't make things easier.
