  • Pharrell Williams hosts a masterclass for music students at The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts as part of his 50TH ANNIVERSARY Artist-In-Residency. Joined by Dean Allyson Dean and Professors Bob Power and Jason King, Pharrell listens to students’ projects, offers constructive criticism, and discusses the nature of the creative process. Pharrell also invited high school kids from the Future Music Moguls, a free high school program at Clive Davis Institute, to observe the masterclass.

Make no mistake, the first three artists are very solid. Maggie is just on another level, but it's not the kind you get to by just working harder or even talent, in my opinion. She went through a lot of soul searching and a variety of experiences before hitting on that sound (and that song), which appears to have happened very organically. There's a great episode of the podcast "Song Exploder" in which she talks about it. - One other thing that I might mention that's worth noticing is that the first three artists all talked about what they wanted to represent to the world, whereas Maggie talked about personal experience, spirituality, and music. Her song was expressing something deep and real. While the others likely were attempting to do the same, the focus on where it comes from makes all of the difference.

21:54 - Ok, just gonna jam a little bit here. This is some wicked s#!t here, you know that right?
21:56 - Maggie chuckles. She knows.

22:54 - Ears open, brain’s flyin’ around. Should I wait a year to work with her, or ask after class?
23:03 - I’m thinking Grammys, not sure what my legs are doing.

I felt like the other artist were copying a style that they feel they relate to whereas Maggie was creating from what she is. The comments about the other students being ashamed/embarrassed or put down are really clueless. I've been in a college like this and the pure talents usually are the most supportive of other students. Everyone is proud of them.
Maybe there is some jealousy but I never felt this way.
One of my friend won a silver medal at a Chopin concert in NY when she was 16, as a self-taught pianist, and might very well be the most impressive improviser I've ever heard, and is on her way to have a career as a songwriter.
I was just always so happy to be her friend and her drummer!
Very weird output, thinking that you get embarrassed because one of your colleagues have such talent. Some people are jealous, but it's the minority.
Then again some talent have some ego issues.
I would say honestly this game is a game of wisdom and mind, it's much more mental, you put students with the same capacity, the difference is 80% in the attitude and 20% in the life they had before. It's not easy.
I also wish that talent who grew later in life would be more acclaimed. It's extremely rare to be that gifted, but the gift is in the mind and the ability to focus and work at such a level at a young age.

instead of copying it, BUY it so the artist can actually make a living creating this gorgeous music for us. You buy your clothes, your phone, your food, you pay for concerts, you don't steal...so show artist-writers the same respect and pay for their music so that they can a) afford to eat and live and b) continue to create and grow. CZcams and Spotify royalty payments are tiny compared to what radio play and record sales once brought. You would buy a Reese's candy...be a standup guy and buy good music. It's a huge help to the artist.

Synesthesia is one of the most pretentious things ever rt. Fair enough if you genuinely have it and in terms of music you may have perfect pitch as a result since you associate certain colours with certain notes, but most of the time it’s just people self diagnosing themselves with a condition which they’ve heard online just because they associate two things together. Like if you hear a song or instrument and it makes you think red, that’s no indication you have the condition. Instead it’s more than likely just associating the timbre with colours.
But yeah, if you’ve had MRI scans as proof it could be real. 99% of the time it’s just creative people wanting it when they don’t have it and just yearning for real conditions as fashion statements

Kaizer-Man as someone who actually has spatial-sequence synesthesia, I’m genuinely curious as to how the way a person synthesizes information naturally could be “pretentious”? Some people may try and act like they’re special because of it which can be annoying, but nothing about synesthesia itself is “pretentious” and it’s actually a really interesting concept.
