- Pharrell Williams hosts a masterclass for music students at The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts as part of his 50TH ANNIVERSARY Artist-In-Residency. Joined by Dean Allyson Dean and Professors Bob Power and Jason King, Pharrell listens to students’ projects, offers constructive criticism, and discusses the nature of the creative process. Pharrell also invited high school kids from the Future Music Moguls, a free high school program at Clive Davis Institute, to observe the masterclass.

Agreed
His name is Bob Power, a great recording engineer, producer and obviously a great teacher too. Look up his name, he has worked with all the greats such as Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, The Roots or Meshell Ndegeocello.

Maggie completely changed the flow of this seminar. After her performance, Pharrel finally opened up. You can tell he was speechless.
Yeah you can tell he knew at that moment he didn’t have to try to like it hahahah. The other songs were good but they were missing something
Everything sounded relatable for everyone else, so he was able to give production tips because he knew how they wanted their songs to sound like. With Maggie, he can't tell her how her production should sound because she was in her own lane
@@Marceles45 I totally agree with you.. it's not that the other artist necessary where trying to make something that sounded comparable to another artist work, but they where just heavily influenced by people they have looked to. the other artists I think were more technical but with Maggie she came from something super spiritual and so she was able to depict that with her music.

The best part is when he asks for Maggie's name again after hearing her song... he knew he just found a gem.
Make no mistake, the first three artists are very solid. Maggie is just on another level, but it's not the kind you get to by just working harder or even talent, in my opinion. She went through a lot of soul searching and a variety of experiences before hitting on that sound (and that song), which appears to have happened very organically. There's a great episode of the podcast "Song Exploder" in which she talks about it. - One other thing that I might mention that's worth noticing is that the first three artists all talked about what they wanted to represent to the world, whereas Maggie talked about personal experience, spirituality, and music. Her song was expressing something deep and real. While the others likely were attempting to do the same, the focus on where it comes from makes all of the difference.
Can we use past experiences in life to write about ? Or does it only count when it's an experience now in the present moment ?
@@festy111 I mean anything counts, the point of the comment is that there is no true arbitrary rule. If the fire of the feeling is still ignited then it’s still good, or also you can talk in retrospect about how something shaped you.

I think my favorite part is when Pharrell doesn't understand where Maggie's story is going yet and he thinks the professor is being dismissive to her folk music roots, so he immediately cuts him off to be like "boomchika boomchika can be awesome too".
Give him credit, Bob Power (the professor) has produced some of the best ever hip hop records. I don’t think he was being submissive.

The big difference between Maggie and the other students is authenticity and confidence in her uniqueness. I felt like the other artist were copying a style that they feel they relate to whereas Maggie was creating from what she is. That's the difference between artist who make it big and the ones who don't. People can feel and hear the difference. That's why everyone had the same reaction as Pharrell did when listening to Maggie.

Girl is smart. It not only shows in her abstract lyricism, and instincts with the beats. She knows how to sell herself with the story then takes a quick glance at his nonverbal cues when listening to the song and starts bobbing her head. That's the ultimate sign of confidence when selling yourself. With a strong product backing you up, its the smartest thing to do in that situation. Best wishes to these artists.
She's just being herself.
Maggie just being her absolute self. She is just oh so natural and authentic. She is loved for who she is with no pretence.
She had produced two original folk albums before taking this college course. Totally knows how to put her unique music into each and every one of her tracks. Her first two albums are wonderfully authentic and beautiful too.
D Man-G your imagining your own truth. She liked her own music cause she was proud and not cause she’s selling a product.

The comments about the other students being ashamed/embarrassed or put down are really clueless. I've been in a college like this and the pure talents usually are the most supportive of other students. Everyone is proud of them.
Maybe there is some jealousy but I never felt this way.
One of my friend won a silver medal at a Chopin concert in NY when she was 16, as a self-taught pianist, and might very well be the most impressive improviser I've ever heard, and is on her way to have a career as a songwriter.
I was just always so happy to be her friend and her drummer!
Very weird output, thinking that you get embarrassed because one of your colleagues have such talent. Some people are jealous, but it's the minority.
Then again some talent have some ego issues.
I would say honestly this game is a game of wisdom and mind, it's much more mental, you put students with the same capacity, the difference is 80% in the attitude and 20% in the life they had before. It's not easy.
I also wish that talent who grew later in life would be more acclaimed. It's extremely rare to be that gifted, but the gift is in the mind and the ability to focus and work at such a level at a young age.
the music business is different than usual business. people aren't the competition, they're opportunities (to get gigs, sessions, plugs, new acquaintances, and to just vibe and play with)

i like how the most unassuming student had the most impactful music (aside from the neckbone chain). give me substance over style every day of the week
She's actually dressed exactly like I would expect it to be. I'm an artist I totally understand.
Yeah, noticed the neck bone chain but that too shows her unique take -- sweet nature girl softness vs the hard reality of a dead animal neckbone. Which is kinda how nature is...sweet and savage.
Poetic. ;P
RR Greenwood Neckbone Chain, new band name.
It’s not about style > substance or substance > style. When you have stylish Pharrell Williams in the room as well it’s just disrespectful to undermine how artists dress.
If they want to be assuming that’s fine, if they want to be unassuming that’s also fine. But don’t shame or praise someone for wearing X outfit. That’s not what it’s about
Maggie's sound reminds me of Florence and the Machine
but better
@@CaliBoiiTV wouldn't say "better"
They both excel in their own terms. None is better than the other since both are already the best that can be.
Amida Butsu Scandinavian electro pop sounds cool
Florence and the machine meets Taylor Swift
Yes a softer toned version of her voice.
y’all whenever I see Maggie’s part I start crying because her reaction is so pure & her jammin out to the song is so cute
2024 Noah and Sedona are viral, and Maggie has a solidified career, crazy
The third girl, Maggie?? So dope. She even looked as if she felt her music more, and Pharrell most def did. Great job!!
Yeah exactly she felt it for real. Bopping her head and everything. Super in the mode
2 years later, she’s the musical guest on SNL. Gotta love the world sometimes.
@@steelberg23 Yeah man she's doing really well and deserves it!
@@steelberg23 I've been obsessed ever since the snl performance
I'm glad she was able to channel her MDMA experience into a creative experience.
I'm sure it was more than just molly.
she took a pill to show avici she was cool
as soon as she said spiritual experience I instantly knew it was drugs:p
Lmao
Right lol exactly what I was thinking probably true Europe has the good stuff for real
I love how the intro is Cafuné’s don’t you forget
Came back to this to see Cafuné in their earlier days
I NEED THAT MAGGIE ROGERS SONG THOUGH
+Antonio Diaz ditto
+Tashreeq Vardien Me too
It's on sound cloud.
what's the name?
Which song is it?!
There needs to be a TV show like this
adam levine has a songwriting competition show but the contestants have to give up the rights to whatever they come up with so that kind of sets a bad precedent, but something like that where contestants were able to hold on to whatever they create would definitely be interesting, especially if it focused on producers
yes!
🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
Cafune and Maggie ! Wish for all these students to make it big someday
Imagine if 100 gecs came and Pharrell listened to them
Literally exactly what I was thinking!
He wouldnt like it, like 99.99% of everyone that litsens to it first time
like, geckos?
it would be extremely cursed
where can i get this fucking song
The Maggie Rogers song? Coming out this summer. It's called Alaska.
instead of copying it, BUY it so the artist can actually make a living creating this gorgeous music for us. You buy your clothes, your phone, your food, you pay for concerts, you don't steal...so show artist-writers the same respect and pay for their music so that they can a) afford to eat and live and b) continue to create and grow. CZcams and Spotify royalty payments are tiny compared to what radio play and record sales once brought. You would buy a Reese's candy...be a standup guy and buy good music. It's a huge help to the artist.
she hasn't released this song anywhere though
I need it now
She said on facebook that she's working on and going to release her song "Alaska" this summer, so very soon.
Damn, Pharrell compared the unique of her song and style with Wu Tang Clan.
Respect Maggie. I hope you kept your style till today.
She did
This masterclass just shows how Pharrell Williams is a music genius. He’s giving notes where a normal listener wouldn’t even pick out .
21:21 the look to his assistant is priceless, he legit wants to laugh, cry, scream & dance at the same time. This song is incredible and I must say as a beat maker myself I'm optimistic about the next generation of real music, 21:48 the moment pharrell wanted to jump on the remix..
Pharell Williams holding back tears while listening to Maggie Rogers is the most wholesome thing I've seen all week and I pet cats.
"Well we'll see if I'm successful..." -Maggie Rogers.
His face during the song just shows how good her music was. This famous and successful celebrity music producer was mind blown by her stuff
Cafunè getting recognized rn and it’s great to see it after 6 years later
I would have just been licking my lips and coughing uncomfortably while he listened to my song
r u me
***** Hey! Unfortunately, it is. haha
I think my suggestions is just any video you have top comment in
Haha for real
What really blow my mind is that Pharrel is 43.
black don't crack
VČ Sometimes it does though...
Esteban B just when they are using it,other than that no
TroubleChizzy2010 bruh you gotta chill it’s cause dude looks like he still 23 lmao.
i mean u can see he looks 40 ish
I feel a little bit sorry for the other performers in the class, but they were probably as blown away as the rest of the world. And it’s just such incredible music. Singular. That really is the word.
The first performers, Cafune, have actually been somewhat successful and are currently touring. They have a song on spotify with over 100 million plays.
stil not as famous @@adrian-po6lb
Oh wow! I’ve been bopping Tek It for a month now and I didn’t even know they were from the Pharrell vid! That’s crazy. Cafuné & Maggie Rogers both discovered here, super cool
Anyone else watching Pharrell's facials the whole time while he's listening to Maggie's song?? :)
Yoooo Pharrell wants to just go ham on maggies song but he's keeping himself back you can tell he wants to be like DAAAAYYYYYYUMM this is dope
No I am watching videos watching the table and wall
"I'm synesthetic" - Every art student ever lol.
Awesome track though.
omfg seriously. charli xcx and lorde, too.
Synesthesia is one of the most pretentious things ever rt. Fair enough if you genuinely have it and in terms of music you may have perfect pitch as a result since you associate certain colours with certain notes, but most of the time it’s just people self diagnosing themselves with a condition which they’ve heard online just because they associate two things together. Like if you hear a song or instrument and it makes you think red, that’s no indication you have the condition. Instead it’s more than likely just associating the timbre with colours.
But yeah, if you’ve had MRI scans as proof it could be real. 99% of the time it’s just creative people wanting it when they don’t have it and just yearning for real conditions as fashion statements
Kaizer-Man as someone who actually has spatial-sequence synesthesia, I’m genuinely curious as to how the way a person synthesizes information naturally could be “pretentious”? Some people may try and act like they’re special because of it which can be annoying, but nothing about synesthesia itself is “pretentious” and it’s actually a really interesting concept.
Jock Marais ASMR Did you read my comment? I said fair enough if youre in the minority who genuinely have it. The pretentious ones are those who self diagnose themselves with it
Kaizer-Man like Sarah Grace from The Voice. She was pretentious AF
How have I only just come across this 6 years later. I never knew this is how Maggie started out. Pharell can feel he's listening to something special when she starts singing .... and then when the beats drops, he's just landed on Mars ... absolute gold by Maggie and she's so humble
Omg it’s Cafuné
Maggie I'm going to need you to release that song so I can buy it. thx.
Can't fake that initial reaction. Genuine as it gets.
Cafune & Maggie ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
I think its that these moments are the ones we always hear about after an artist gets big, right moment right people right time. Its never ever been caught on film this way. Captivates me every time seeing the raw reactions of two musically inclined people. The luck of fame is fascinating.
