Sleepy teens: A public health epidemic | Wendy Troxel | TEDxManhattanBeach

  • Sleep deprivation - What most parents, teachers, and school administrators think of as just part of being a teenager, Rand Corporation sleep scientist Wendy Troxel labels loss of teen sleep a public health epidemic. Not a function of being social or participating in social media, Wendy believes sleep loss is mostly due to school start times - a matter of public policy.
Dr. Troxel’s research focuses on the interface between sleep, the social environment, and health, and on implications for public policy.
Her research is supported by the Department of Defense and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. As an active clinical psychologist, Dr. Troxel helps patients overcome sleep disorders through behavioral (nonpharmacologic) treatment. She was the founding director of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine-an accredited training program in Behavioral Sleep Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. She continues to provide research and clinical training opportunities for graduate and postdoctoral students interested in sleep medicine. She also holds leadership roles in several professional sleep societies, is an Associate Editor for the journal “Sleep Health”, and has been involved in local and national efforts focused on healthy school start times for adolescents.

The Undying Fighter this is me most school days, which is why I start homework at 9 or10 and go to sleep around 11-12. Thankfully I have a car now so I can get away with waking up at 7:40 and barely making it to school on time at 8:15. I’m usually alright after third period but get tired after lunch, during my hard classes, which I didn’t do as well in partially because that’s when I get tired. Then my energy picks up about one or two hours from when I get back from school, I get tired again, and am awake when I’m supposed to be sleeping. We talked about this in school and the teenager sleep problem, but nobody’s done anything about it because it would “inconvenience the elementary parents and they’d have to change the bus routes”. If they picked up the elementary kids first, and then went back later around 8:30 to pick up the middle school and high schoolers to start school at 9, I wouldn’t complain. Plus scores would probably go up a lot considering they place our standardized tests in the morning before lunch when many of us are tired and didn’t have time to get breakfast. I’m just saying. Sorry for the rant.

School staff and teachers say this because they REFUSE to submit to change. They see how generations are billions of years ahead of the older generation's intellect (not intelligence, INTELLECT) due to videogames, and try so hard to downgrade the actual education we need by claiming "videogames cause violence" - they don't want newer generations to come to be different, because god forbid you express an opinion associated with videogames. Not really surprised that the phrase "OK Boomer" came up as a trend.

Your state issues out useless end of semester exams you have to take, which then pushes back education so you have to learn more useless things, and then that means you don't get as much free time, then it turns into bringing it all home, and then your sleep is affected. It's not always the school's fault. But we do need to hold the state and the district accountable.

If you can't it's because you're not giving the body what it evolved to need for sleep. #1 If you live in a wintery/cloudy climate invest in sunrise alarm clocks that will fill your room with light in the morning. #2 install a program called flux on your computer which will eliminate blue-light from the screen after a certain hour. #3 Drink some water when you wake up. Hydration helps with alertness. #4 no eating anything for at least 2.5 hrs before bedtime. These things will help fix it.

She’s no longer ADHD, ODD or learning disabled. 3mo after she was last tested and was retested....no evidence of ANY of this! School district was stunned. All boiled down to less stress and more sleep. She was spending until midnight on homework because she wasn’t understanding. Then she’d wake up early to go over it again. I averaged 3-4 hours of sleep a night. I took a zero hour and did sports for 2 hours after school. Since I was born into a low income family, I felt that I had to take ap classes as well, so homework took me 6-7 hours to complete a night. I remember literally deciding between spending time with my family and showering if I even got to make that choice. I didn’t even have a phone until my junior year and basically had no friends. @@secretlyditto7716 what I'm saying is if you have depression and it's because of lack of sleep it's not the schools fault , I went through depression myself , I'll tell you this blaming it on things doesn't help , talking very rarely helps in the long term , going to the doctor about it does , a good doctor will medicate you as little as possible for as short a time frame as possible to fix the chemical imbalance in your brain , just school in general isn't the problem , is it a bully? Are you struggling or something with grades and friends? If there is a reason be a man (hypothetically) and either fix it or get rid of it from your life , if you can't find a reason maybe it's mindset that needs to be looked at , but I'll tell you one thing letting yourself use it as an excuse is not the right thing to do , no matter how dull you feel make the effort to get up and try live normally while healing yourself at the same time. You gotta realize to that a few months after finishing highschool so many social boundaries and rules from school just go out the window , everyone finds themselves in some way or another , even look at people's Facebook's who are after leaving school last year and how much they change , shy people come out of there box and sometimes shock you with there statuses because you very rarely know people's true selves in school because many haven't found it, hope you can take something positive from my ramble

A lot of people only ever say "im tired" when describing their mood and i think its a cop out. Everyone is tired, you big babies.
Besides, anyone who is content to use only one word to express their mood is either boring and unimaginative, or an actual psychopath.
