Kyle, a Denver, Colorado Public Schools “Distinguished Teacher”, shares what she has learned from her students and offers educators ideas and strategies towards supporting their students academically and emotionally.

Elementary School Teacher
The driving force in Kyle Schwartz’ career has been to ensure that all children receive a quality education. Kyle is currently a third grade teacher at Doull Elementary School in Denver, Colorado where approximately 90% of the students live below or very near the poverty line and about half are learning English at school.
She has previously worked with educational organizations such as City Year, the Denver Teacher Residency, American Achieves and
TeachStrong. Designated a “Distinguished Teacher” by Denver Public Schools, Kyle has transformed a simple yet powerful classroom writing lesson into a national dialogue about the troubling realities American students face on a daily basis. Her book “I Wish My Teacher Knew: How One Question Can Change Everything for our Kids” offers teachers guidance towards providing the educational opportunities, loving support and guidance that all students need and deserve.

..I wish my teachers knew that kids can struggle with depression too. It’s a real thing. You can’t just set it aside and do homework sometimes, sometimes it controls you, sometimes you spend all that time after school crying trying to explain to someone how you feel. Sometimes you feel completely empty. Sometimes you’re too scared to tell your parents because you don’t know how they’re going to react.

Pink Lemonaid I know exactly how you feel. I will sit in my room and cry myself to sleep some nights. I will try and explain to my parents how I feel, but they don't understand. I try to explain to kids why I snapped at them. But, most of all, I have to try and concentrate on school work because my anxiety butts in and says, "don't ignore depression.... it's a part of you. But your teacher will get mad and you won't pass 6th grade and get into a good college if you slack off."

A problem is a problem, if it has a negative impact on you, it shouldn’t be compared to people who you think have it worse. In the long run, just saying that you shouldn’t feel stressed or bad about something because someone else has it worse could just make the person feel guilty for having these feelings and worse for thinking them because someone else may have it worse than them..

SuperNerd Rose: There was one time, when I was at High School, that I choose to spend 5 hours babysitting (Which included making dinner and changing Diapers) my little brothers (while my parent were away) instead of writing a 500 essay on how to be a good parent, and Caregiver. I objected to my Teachers comment the next day that someone does not care about being a good parent, so HE called the Principal. The Principal asked about why I did not do my homework, I responded that I considered Experience more important than a writing assignment. The teacher was told that I had a good point, but a zero on this assignment was acceptable. After the Principal left, I fielded a number of question on how I cared for my brothers from my Classmates. Much to the Irritation of the teacher, some of how I did it did not align with the book (Wrestling around the floor with them was not supposed to be acceptable, but they wanted to play with Big Brother). Which is okay, since no one is perfect. He did shine a spotlight on it, so what was the problem?

Maybe you should tell her about your adhd, and maybe ask your doctor to write you a note that says you're allowed to draw during or something! (i don't have adhd, but I always drew, it really helped my concentration. I study art now! never cared for my teachers' remarks on them though)

Try actually telling someone. Maybe there is a way for you to write an anonymous letter to someone, be it the teacher, a friend or someone else you can trust. Many schools also employ someone, a therapist, support teacher etc. to whom you can go or write to, anonymously or not. It helps.

I wish my teachers knew that forcing me to write a letter to my grandmother for grandparents day, even though she had passed away a week before, was the worst experience I've ever had with school. Even though I told her that I couldn't write to anyone, my grandfather was estranged from our family, my other grandmother was struggling with schizophrenia and couldn't deal with letters from outside people, and my other grandfather was long dead. She still urged me to write. I refused. I sat there and spilled tears onto my page instead of words. The pitying faces of other students didn't make me feel better. And the fact that I would still have to preform at the venue, even though I had asked to be excluded from the program due to my recent loss. Teachers need to ask these questions. We students would never tell them on our own.

When my parents went to meet my teachers they said they have never in their life seen someone as quiet as me. And that I need to speak up, ask more questions and make friends. Just be yourself. And it might be hard to do... but you gotta believe that you can achieve your dream, whatever it is. Don’t think it is impossible. And work for it, even if you’d rather do nothing. Luckily for me, I found some help from my middle school. They help me dealing with my depression and anxiety. They help me to lower my shield. While in my experience, Public School Teachers fail at their responsibilities, but expect the students to make up for it. During one Meeting with the Principal, My Sisters Teacher expected my mom to help her do her math and placed all of the blame for her bad math grade on her. My mother asked about the previous nights Math homework. The reply was all of the answers were wrong, Your daughter would have done better with your help. My mother said that she helped last night. The Principal suggested that since my mother could not help with the math, the teacher should. Her response was What do you think I am A Tutor. The Principal replied Good Teachers ARE Tutors.
I wish my teacher knew that everyday I come to school in fear of where I’m going to sit at lunch, or whether I’m going to be called on in class, and if I do will I get made fun of tearing up and not answering the simple math problem a 5 year old could? Edit: Everyone who commented, I can’t begin to describe the kind of respect I have for you. I’m still shaking over how people can be so nice! I guess you could say it sounds lame, but all of the words you said, was like a little bandaid slowly healing my scraped up heart. I’m glad there’s people in the world that can care for someone they’ve never met, and we need more people like that. I’m getting better. I’ve been watching a lot of videos on confidence, and stuff like that. I realized that I have a warm bed, and a roof to live under. My dad has gotten a lot better, and is starting to loose his abusive tendencies, and has became a better person. Hey I don't know you but I have a gift from God. And I mean that for real. I'm putting together "The world's First and Only Self-Defense Course in the Field of Education" I want to mentor you. I'm 53 years old. I've already had that life you are complaining about. We always lost our living space. My mother had 11 children, food stamps, welfare, etc, etc... Have you ever ask yourself why you feel empty? Depression? You feel that way because you are thinking about your current condition and not focusing on the great future you should be building by going to school. Don't let those knuckle head rob you of the one thing that will change your life. Your education! I want you to play a game with me. Line up every thing that you are afraid of and put it on a list. These are the things that you will face everyday. Think about it, the reason you are getting the wrong answers in math, you had bad teachers. I can help you fix that. I teach skill-set not curriculum. So what, if you get a wrong answer. Henry Ford, said, "the ones of us who are not afraid to make mistakes will hire the ones of us who are afraid to make mistakes. Your crying, you notice when you get through crying the problem don't disappear. Social anxiety? So you are paying attention to all the people around you, what they think, what they are saying... It's head noise!!! I'll show you how control that mental chatter...

I used to be where you are now. The social anxiety, crippling depression, crying in the bathroom while too afraid to go to class... I just want to tell you, if I'd known then what I know now I would have cut *a lot* more classes. Compared to one's mental health, things such as grades, school, keeping up appearances, etc. are so freaking trivial. Whenever school feels like torture, please, please don't go there. You *need* respite and, if you're anything like I used to be, you won't stop falling apart until you get it. No one can make you go to school, or do homework, or make presentations; no one but yourself, that is. So if the teachers ask, just say you're not feeling good and leave it at that. In the case that you don't feel at ease staying home, maybe there's a library somewhere that you can spend your time? Your anxiety will peak a little in the beginning, probably, but I promise it'll quickly start feeling like a huge weight off your shoulders. Be kind to yourself.

I wish my teacher knew that not every kid can be smart, and to show the less smart students the same decency as the smart ones.
True, in 7th grade, we had 4 groups of kids with the 1 being the worst in math to 4th being the best. And I found it enjoyable as I could actually follow what the teacher was saying and as I was really good at English, I didn't have to rot in the 2nd group for long because the teacher transferred me to the 4th. I'm in 9th now and the groups don't exist anymore (unfortunately) Now, I know what to do when I'm in class but forget as soon as I come home

What I wish my teacher knew: that I'm afraid to answer this question honestly, because teachers always ask for honesty but honestly I hate my teachers for making my life stressful and uncomfortable. If my actual teacher asked my this I would have to lie.

Teachers choose to be teachers because they are passionate about what they teach, and they want to help the next generation to be passionate about it too. They can be out of touch and assign too much homework, but they usually aren’t the ones to blame. If you ever take a look at a curriculum (not a syllabus; they’re super simplified) you’ll understand. Teachers have a heap of classes to teach a heap of content to. You can’t blame them for not knowing how you feel about the work you’re assigned when you’re out of touch with their workload as well. Most teachers stay up into the late hours preparing for classes. It would crush any teacher’s soul to read that comment.
All a teacher ever wants for their students is success. Even if you have troubles at home, they might too. Always give your teachers the benefit of the doubt, they’re paid extremely little for the work they do, and it’s usually not their fault.

It's also the fact that most of us have a high lexile score on alot of things, I'm the smartest in my class, even though I hate it, my score for reading and writing is about 7th grade level, and in preschool, I had 3rd grade reading skill, and aced every spelling test, even though.. I had trouble with the word "Shoe".

I wish my teacher knew that being unfair isn’t fair to the one treated badly. Just because that child has a certain talent like dancing, singing. Doesn’t mean that they are better and smarter than us. If you're being honest about this, please get help from a counselor or someone you trust. If you feel like committing suicide, you can call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. They will help you and give the support you need. You can talk to me if you want, too, but I don't think I'd be that much of a help. If your problem is your teacher, however, I recommend switching classes. I did that once because my math teacher was terrible (along with his grading system, blah) and my new teacher is awesome and caring and actually grades papers fairly!
Also, school is not the end of the world. Grades aren't the center of your life. Just do your best, get what you get, and move on. Everyone encounters a bad person once in a while. Get help, do not stress! You will be fine :)

I wish my teachers knew that I can’t see well from a distance because my eyesight has gotten worse and I haven’t been able to get an appointment to get them rechecked. I wish they knew that I have to ask the people beside me to double check what’s on the board all the time. I wish they knew how awkward this made me feel and how often I avoid it. I wish they knew how I struggle to figure out what a word says and if it’s a word I’ve never seen before it can take up to a minute or more.

Edit: I really appreciate all of yall.. Im kinda glad I can to this community. Actually ever since this comment im living in a better home and excercising which helps with my depression. But really thank you so much most of yall really touched my heart with your sweet replies. And I thank you for taking your time to reply to my random comment.
Alert the school, find a counsellor or go to the doctors. Telling people online will not help with anything it will only make you seem like an attention seeker (if you parents did abuse you it makes sense for you to want to gain attention), seriously get some goddamn help. I don’t believe for a second you’ve attempted suicide 20 times this year, you may have thought about it or come close but that is not an attempt. I will say it again. If you are truly dealing with this, get help, Im actually going through most of this (minus most of the parental issues) and I’ve gotten help, it’s best to alert people about it rather than complaining online.

Areum Park I for one do not think that is easy depending on your struggle being abused by family is not a easy thing too tell because then you will probably be taken and put in adoption if there is no close family members too take you and depression and anxiety I guess can be fixed but it is very long hard and emotional to go through but this is just my opinion so it may be different for other people and councling it is very expensive most of the time
