    ‘As a new white belt, these classes have helped me so much, Prof Tom’s technique, the details, and his attitude. I love how Prof. Tom shows the ‘mistakes people make’ and then shows the correct way of doing things. The only one I have ever seen do this’ - New York, New York
    Great videos, great instruction. I just watch them for hours…Melbourne, Australia

    Just used this tonight. Had my brown belt coach in Kesa Gatame. To my surprise he leaves arm out. I slide it under my leg and into the Americana. It works. I get the tap. His father looks over at him (Black Belt 🥋 that runs the gym) with surprise and disgust. I’m a one strip white belt. (NOBODY). Later we all line up, Professor says to higher belts it’s time to bring the pain to striped white belts and up. Kesa Gatame works. Side note: I’m going to get wrecked from now on.

    3:01, It IS called Head & Arm control. This is a fundamental Catch wrestling position, and the name is exactly what you said. Those guys were hitting it for years, before jiu-jitsu guys figure out that you can also control the guy without the far-side underhook.
    I remember still 20 years ago, practically all jiu-jitsu coaches taught this move as "wrong" positioning (including the Gracies and Machodos), which is also why you don't get points for it in jiu-jitsu tournaments. Funnily enough, the same coaches who slandered the Head & Arm position didn't even have the right body-weight positioning themselves when demonstrating it, so I guess they were right about their own technique. It wasn't made popular in jiu-jitsu until that Catch wrestling fellow Josh Barnett used it to submit Dean Lister with it, so maybe we should call it the "Barnett".

  • @blitzthekraken9832
    @blitzthekraken9832 Před 4 lety +2

    WoW! BJJ guys will never admit this works, because BJJ designed an entire system to break this position, versus learning this position. So they don't know how to react to it, but just tell you how to escape from it. It's not the best way of teaching if you can't hold the position. Thank you for describing the importance of the arm. The arm is the most important part, at some points you can lose the head, but if you have the arm, you can suck them back in. lastly, you took more of a wrestlers position, with weight on the chest, that's cool for big guys, but for small guys, you need to spin with them to hold them there. You control arm and head, and when they rotate into you, you just rotate with them, "You go they go" squeezing the head and pulling the arm tighter. You want the shoulder of the opponent under your leg at all times. My son at 115lb has held off 200lb guys in this position, for a good minute, not submitting, but just controlling by using the above technique. If you can't control this position, I would not recommend submitting from position, lots of things can wrong and you can hurt your partner. It's better to work on control.
    Here is the legendary Sensei's teaching this position from the 50's: 24 minutes in they talk about groundwork and Ketsa Gatame and show the positions. The leg under the shoulder is what most people teaching Ketsa tend to forget. Sid the arm, It's the second most important technique for the ride. The head can get sucked back in. My sons go to BJJ and Judo, they do well in this position at BJJ clubs. I do Judo.

    I have been doing Kesa for 52 years submitting heaps. Just learned the Kimura from your video, so, old dogs new tricks. Osu. Can I just say? I get a better response for submission by turning my body slightly away, sort of looking over my left shoulder. Puts pressure on their diaphragm without you leaning back and possibly getting turned over. Also, I tell my people to hold the arm under your armpit. Pull it in clamping the armpit tight. the hand is free to do whatever. Professor, thank you. I loved your clear explanation. I commenced Judo in 1966 aged 10. Just promoted to Shodan on 25th August with the Aust Kodokan Judo association. I know, I'm a slow learner.

      Also Judoka here, Since I end up in Kesa all the time I will now use this and tap them rather than waiting for the 20 second ippon

    In Bushidokan, that is the very first move taught in the system to start practicing ground fighting. Kesa Gatame - it is in truth in that style from catch. Jim Harrison, was an is very knowledgeable on martial arts stuff.

  • @Pendraeg

    Love this. As someone who does both Judo and Jiu Jitsu, I can state with a fairly high degree of confidence that it is almost impossible to escape from a good Kesa applied by a competent practitioner of the same size or bigger. That said, I have always thought that the donwside of Kesa was the limited options for submissions with out giving up position. This really opens up Kesa as an offensive position and not just a defensive controlling position (i.e. win via pin in Judo or wear them out before changing position and looking for a more offensive position in Jiu Jitsu).

    Really good stuff! I've always liked the Kesa Gatame, but I've never had this level of depth taught to me. Also, I love the moment at 8:45 where his hand shoots up in preparation to tap haha. Keep up the amazing videos!
