    Distraction is why most athletes tighten up during a 100 meters, 200m or 400m race and run slower than they should. They're distracted by all sorts of things. Mainly by the pressure you put on yourself and other things such as the other athletes in the race, that niggle you have, all this confuses your body and when a body gets confused, it tightens. You give too much of a s_____ and put so much pressure on yourself that you cannot handle it.

    For me, the critical moment in the 400 is at the 250 mark where the first slight signs of lactic build up is felt and the need to stay relaxed is called for. Not easy to do!!

      It s easier to do when you start the race in the right mindset.
