- Every year, police departments across the U.S. trade in their used firearms when it's time for an upgrade. But a CBS News investigation found thousands of those former police weapons wind up in the hands of criminals. National investigative correspondent Stephen Stock reports.

So what difference does it make that it came from a police force verse a regular citizen if the purchaser is going through the same purchasing process for the same firearm?
They want to ban this practice just appease their own feelings on the matter, whether it reduces crime or not (hint: it doesn't) doesn't matter.
They are trying to reduce the 2nd amendment
Do they realize that police firearms are the same as civilian firearms?
Stop blaming guns. It's the criminals and the choices they make. Don't lessen their crimes but deflecting to the gun.
The criminals are going to get their hands on them regardless but police issued guns ending up in their hands is cause for concern.
This title is just as misleading as the story itself.
Two of my carry firearms were former police arms, they traded them back to the manufacturer, and they were sold by the local gun shop. The manufacturer discount ta their new purchase, and customers can buy the firearm after a background check for $100.00 cheaper than a brand new firearm. If trade ins had not been available I would have bought the same model, and paid $100.00 more for it. Sadly there are criminals out there, and the young man lost his life.
If out taxes buy them guns why are they selling them for profit even through a 3rd party ? They should either be free or sold for charity not put back into their grossly inflated budget
@@Choppermv17 Most departments don't have a huge budget outside of our major cities or the richest counties, hence why they're sold.
@@Choppermv17They aren't selling them for a profit.
Police have guns. They eventually get new guns. They then sell the old guns to a FFL so save the taxpayer money on their new firearms.
Go away with this donate blah blah nonsense

So this is an issue but the president left 30 million guns in Afghanistan hmmmmm........
That's a good comment! Tanks and other machines too!
Our president would rather terrorist have guns then law abiding citizens
Something to think about
A vast majority of those weapons, including heavy machine guns, are being sold on the dark web. Most end up in cartel states but some M4s have been recovered in the recent attack October 7th in Israel. Recently the ATF filed a report where numerous agents resigned because of missing weapons from federal possession.
@@deadlyta something to think about? That's not even a true statement. why would anyone think about something so stupid?
30M? That’s a gross exaggeration. But we all know that facts stopped mattering to Republicans a long time ago.
because they are a bigger and legalized gang
wrong less than 1 in 25000 cops are bad. that is a fact you are wrong
At the hands of a firearm that shouldn't be on the street? What?
Yeah, I had to go back and listen again. It’s easy to blame gun than the people.
They like to blame
There's no difference if a Police Dept sells their guns or if I sell one of my guns. The buyer is still required to completed the required government paperwork and the seller is still required to process the same government paperwork. The news piece demonstrates that you are trying to stigmatize guns, gun sales and gun ownership.
EVIL
Not sure who funds these segments or has this idea (there are multiple of these same stories about LE trade in guns currently) but ill say it again, all legally sold firearms in the United States sold through an FFL must have the purchaser/buyer complete a 4473 ATF form. Not a single one of these pistols should go un-accounted for other than blatantly giving them to criminals.
true.
I bought a used skillet and old grease. I heated it up and touched it while it was hot. I blame the skillet and the old grease for my burnt hand and I think a law should be in place to prevent this from happening to anyone else. See how silly that sounds ?
Thanks for the chuckle. Spot on
Police firearms are no different than a firearm for a regular person, pretty impressive they think that there's some gun owned by the police is somehow more dangerous.
Because police don’t report weapons when stolen
They give them to the gangs
If a cop doesn’t say his gun got stolen he’d be fired 99.99999% of the time
Man. I'm going to come back to this because man...
What do you think happens when a cop shows up to work and doesn't have his duty weapon? Durrrrr cops don't report if their duty weapons are stolen! You people are special
No its because they sell their old guns to gun stores where they are sold on the legal market. What happens after that is not the police organization or the gun stores responsibility.
No it's 100% because police trade in old firearms , people straw purchase or fraudulently buy them and it ends up with criminals . I should know I have a former police gun as my daily carry and I was convicted with it while committing a "crime" still got it back after too.
Because all police officers go on "lake trips and lose them " ...
Really? That's a lot of lost guns.
Another product of the fake news brainwash
Did you even watch the news report? It said the gun was sold on the legal market when the police department traded in their old weapons for new weapons.
I like the way they make the implicit distinction between police and criminals as if it actually exists.
Just here to read the bots
Well, the CIA and ATF do it, so why not the small time gan- I mean police.
This
No. Those agencies directly sold/ gave guns to the cartels.
Police agency's trade in their guns to licensed firearm dealers who then resell them to American citizens through a FFL and with a background check
I think they should rename this report because they did not explain a single case from how the police sold it to a law-abiding citizen to how it ended up in the hands of a criminal even one time
My first thought would be due to oxy addictions.
2:42 they’re trying to destroy the evidence and serial number
0:26 yeah lady its the guns that are out and about walking on their own legs pulling the trigger by themselves
What happens when used police vehicles are resold at auction and then are involved in an accident that kills people?? Or if those vehicles were used to commit robberies?, drive by shootings??
Why does it matter that it was previously a police gun. How about y’all stop committing crimes and shooting each other?
Because the current regime doesn't want to stop crime
They want to disarm legal gun owners
Why does it matter that a police gun is on the streets😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.? How do you start a question of with the problem😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
Better yet just say you don't like those ppl😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@sixnine79 how is it a problem?
@@deadlyta well for the slow ones. Most police departments melt their guns down so they can't be resold or used in a crime. So the problem I'm speaking of is the beginning of the problem. Meaning if they would have melted them down then those crimes with the old officer's gun would've never existed. Not saying other guns would've been use but just not an officer's gun. Slow one
A gun sits in a closet for 30 years. Hmmmmmm?
Ooh, that's a hard one, let me see, how do criminals get hold of police firearms? The police lend them their guns? The police give them their guns? The police sell them their guns? Yes, that is a really tough question to answer. smh
Shocker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Na real question is how do military weapons end up in the cartels hands?
The cartels buy them from corrupt members of the Mexican military or police forces. Even more ironic is many of these firearms are given as free military aid to the Mexican military and police by the US Government as surplus so that the other two thirds of Mexico desperately don't fall to the Mexican Cartels.
Fast and Furious....
Crazy
Id say yes thats not right
they are issued to them. OHHH
What?
Because the police drop crates of guns off in the black and Hispanic hoods
If the police didn't sell guns to criminals how would they pay for OT and all there toys
This is why I'm so grateful that I live in a blue sanctuary city where we have gun free zones and uphold the rule of law.

No, they create a valuable revenue for local governments, are pieces of history, and every one of these firearms is already sold with a background check same as any other firearm.

Well if the sheriff says it, it must be true 🙄
@@reidflemingworldstoughestm1394 It can and is all tracked by the county auditor. Besides, all these firearms are sold to distributors who then sell them to Federally licensed gun dealers, who will only sell a firearm if the person passes their NICS background check.
Some of these firearms unfortunately are stolen or otherwise illegally acquired by criminals, but the overwhelming majority of them aren't.

Let they government teak of the government I know because I know
The cops sell them
Got proof, or are you making this up?
No. What happens is a straw buyer buys them, they change hands and get moved illicitly, then end up on the streets.
Cars and guns are not equal.
Yeah owning a gun is a right
Owning a car isn't
Buying a used cop car I don't have to go a FFL and show my id and get a background check!
Buying a used police firearm is NO DIFFERENT than buying a new firearm at the gun store. It's just cheaper and used. Or if somebody bought a used gun that came from a private citizen from the gun store.
You folks are so clueless and just brainwashed by fake news like this it's sad.
Can someone help me my gun has an expiration date on it and its bad now. 😂Trading in guns like a used car for new guns, our tax dollars is going to some BS !
What's the issue? Most departments don't have the money to have dedicated gunsmiths on site to fix their guns, so they trade them out in a bulk deal every few years the same way they do with cars, office supplies, and so on.
While I agree agency's shouldn't be wasting money and updating guns all the time. But at some point. They do and they should.
Examples. Switching from revolvers to semi auto. Switching from 40 to 9mm.
Switching from an old semi auto to a new one ready for optics etc.
All around the country at the some agencies are ditching sig 320s because of their safety or perceived safety issues.
Even in this video they mentioned a Glock 21. That's a full sized 45ACP gun. Gee I wonder why some agency upgraded from that!
@jakesoros2376 My point is who would need a gunsmith if you're a police officer and you carry a gun 24/7. You should be able to maintain your firearm that includes firearm safety, oiling, and cleaning it properly to ensure your firearm is ready at all times.
Jesus christ, it's not an office printer it's a part of you and the career of being a police officer.
Hello, Mcfly . Think, Mcfly ! 🤔
@albundy06 Revovlers ? That's your argument Revolvers, dude it hasn't been the wild west for 120 years 🤣
And we are policing ourselves, U.S. civilians, not terrorists with fkn body armor, thinking you need a bigger caliber, and hollow points. This isn't a COD game or GTA, if a police officer can't get the job done with a standard issue Glock 40 cal Firearm, they should NOT be a police officer.
@@WeylandLabs Individual officers aren't allowed to work on department issued firearms outside of a light cleaning. All real work on a gun, including replacement parts, has to be done by certified gunsmiths.
Anything less is asking for a lawsuit.
Those guns should go to Ukraine.
A glock 21
Is an awesome side arm
But wars aren't won with side arms
And 45 acp isn't as common in Europe
Now if these were glock 17s or 19s in 9mm maybe
but Even then they ain't gonna do much good against armor
But what about AR15’s or H&K MP5’s? Some SWAT weapons are used by the military.
@@736693 the full auto ones aren't sold to the public
Though I do think they should be as well
But as of now I would not be against that
On a lend lease type program
It's an artillery war, no small arms will help them.
It's an artillery war.
They sell them i have bought guns from cops before.
A cop can sell their own guns.
Cops aren't out there selling their duty issued guns
Incompetent cops lmao
Incompetent fake liberal news and viewers
A larger issue is missing here. The vast majority of firearms used in the commission of a crime were at one point sold legally. This is why there should be a recorded history of a chain of custody for every firearm in the United States. Find the one who last sold the weapon to the person who committed the crime and hold that person responsible if it can be shown that the seller did not perform all of the background checks that licensed gun dealers are required to do. UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS.
Not only would that be unconstitutional
It would violate federal law
Specifically FOPA
Don't they just report the guns stolen
@@The_Quaalude They could, but that would open them up to a criminal charge of making a false statement to police and possibly expose themselves as an accessory to the crime.
So for us that have common sense left how does a cop gun differ from a regular gun nice political play tho
One simple word corruption.
that's the stupidest thing that could ever be spoken. shows you know nothing the amount of corrupt police vs the good police in unregisterable. fact.
