      hey wayne I have the same question
      did you find out the value of the 4 capacitors?
      I think he said C3897 and C3896, however I can´t find them on the schematic I have...

    Wow! You were actually lucky to touch the right spot of the mobo. Based on what your student said about overheating, I was actually expecting something like dropping 99-percent alcohol onto the mobo and see what evaporates the fastest. But once you screamed OUCH, that wasn't necessary.

    20:50 when finding a short i usually set the current limit to 2.5A and raise it if needed later, at 4-5A u can actually set small components on fire, happened with me already, in that case it could be still fixable but if the component is burnt with fire the pad on the board and the terminal of the smd package will be fused together by practically welding them than it is not possible to desolder it, u have to cut them off, with not too small components it is easy to fix but with very tiny multi-terminal stuff is a pain in the ass, happens rarely but best to avoid

    External Video still works without the T29 boost circuit, probably using a powered thunderbolt device might be a better method of testing?

    I watch a lot of your videos, This one got me thinking about something. Would it be practical to purchase a thermal camera for this type of job, That way you will not have to burn yourself, & it would make finding the over heated chip faster!

  • @jonbigman9723
    @jonbigman9723 Před 8 lety

    Louis as a shortcut to finding the short, couldn't you use a heat camera to find all the shorted components? I know it is an added cost but wouldn't that be a better way to find shorts?
    Ah ok question answered already in another video. 6k for a flir, Really?
    I really like your videos. Great work!

    i have similiar problem (I think) same board. My question is does the boost circuit have anything to do with the board turning on. Meaning if that part of circuit doesnt work will it prevent the board from turning on. I have one here that the fan spins like for a sec and stops and it just continuous to do that. All my rails are present except the t29 boost.

    plz Mr louis if i take multimter i ohm mode and cheeck for shoort to ground, if i have a low resistance it mean that i have a shoort to ground, and if i have a high resistance it mean that there are no shoort to ground ?

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  Před 9 lety +1

      +badr linux For the most part, correct. Impedance to ground will always be low on power output to large BGA chipsets though.

    good job louis like always, just a question how do u remeber capacitor size micro farad and voltage and how do u know it brcuse i dont see value on the video in capacitors
    thx

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  Před 9 lety +3

      +badr linux I took it off another board. No reason to look it up or care. This is why having piles of $15 fucked up dead boards is very useful.

      +Mikael Al Husaini thx, i dont have the board right now but found some pictures with google about some logic boards and i see the number now, i expected it with white silk-screen print but it is dark brownish, same color as the board, like this, on the edge of the board, right to the ram slot, : guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/EIPX5l4EuL1Gu1xP

    @Louis I have the same problem with a macbook pro that I am playing with hoping to fix it however bottom cover is so done that I cant even read the model # ... How would I determine motherboard part # so I can buy board view file and schematic.
    There is only barcode # on the ram housing but when i look it up on apple website does not return me any info.
    barcode is : W89250G2Y6GCA K24 2.26G BETTER .

    Hi Louis. I have a board with a short to ground. After replacing many components the short is still there. It looks like the short is coming from the GPU. Will you be doing videos on this type of issue ?
    p.s. love your work and videos. Hats off to you for helping out us techs.

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  Před 8 lety

      not the GPU, it's the FET on the buck converter for the GPU.

      +Louis Rossmann not to worry. I found the culprit. It was a bad 2mm SMD Capacitor on the board directly under the GPU. Thanks to the schematic and board view. And a MASSIVE thanks to you for your videos to give us some ides.

    Hi Louis great video's I wonder if you can advise me on a problem I'm having with my mid 2012 15" none Retina macbook pro just when powered up everything works fine but the fans run full speed and Cpu usage is around 600% making the laptop unusable also the bluetooth Doesn't work but not to bothered about that the apple hardware test shows that GPU die temp sensor is bad can you please tell me where to start looking on the board to have a go at fixing it
    I did buy this as is but after taking the back off the mac has had liquid damage and someone un-known to me has soldered wire links all over the place so I don't hold much hope of fixing it thanks from Leo in the UK

    Hey Louis! I'm chasing down a no start issue on my iMac Mid-2011 a1312. All G3H rails are showing up when I measure them, but the T29 rails don't show up at all. Are these supposed to be on all the time? They back trace to PP3v3_s0 but I can't pin point exactly where something would cause a problem that the whole T29 rail wouldn't get power. Thanks

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  Před 8 lety

      +Ben Tsymbalyuk If thunderbolt is not plugged in then no T29.

      +Louis Rossmann I think i finally found my issue, just wanted to double check with you. I have a PP3V3_S3_PWRCTL meeting up to a PGOOD_12V_S0_G1 through some kind of diode. But the output says PGOOD_12V_S0_G1 and im only measuring 3.4v on the output. Shouldnt it be 12v? Im a little confused. S5 and G3H rails are still good.
