Something oddly satisfying about watching this😊
You’ve just saved me a helluva lot of elbow work and pain!! I’m so glad I came across this video!! We’re starting on our chairs today!
Awesome!! Ours are still going strong. Let me know how they turn out.
You're so right, I didn't bother prepping our kitchen chairs. I painted over the glossy paint with chalk paint. They lasted a year and are chipped to the point where even my husband complained. Thanks for the information.
For some reason people are telling others that chalk paint will stick to a greased pig...and it is not true. Some prep is required.
Like that little jig you made to hold the gun when filling.....
Yes! Prep, prep, prep. Thank you.
It is very important
This dude is my hero
I just need to paint two old counter high chairs. This motivated me to get to it. Thank you 😊
Love your show!!!
Thank you.
Beautiful
I love it
Very informative 👏
Thank you so much.
What’s the paint spray gun you used? Do you think it’s a better finish and more efficient than a paint brush?
I have a brown table that faded in time can you tell me what I need to repaint it back to dark brown (easy fast way)?
First off, great video. Did you sand in between coats of poly?...I just started doing our chairs, I hate it
What about your spray gun and air compressor setup? Links? It would be nice to know what you are using and where I can buy? Thanks
Very informative video. Thank you. Whats the best topcoat to use after Zinsser Primer for painting dining room table and chairs. I want to paint the table and chairs grey.
You would want something with a hard finish. I imagine you could use Emerald from Sherwin Williams or a furniture paint (they have some options on the shelf at most big box stores). I’ve even used regular latex paint top coated with water based polyurethane and it worked well.
How long did you wait before applying poly?
Hi! Remodeling my kitchen.. can I use the same process for my kitchen cabinets? I've sanded some but it's a lot 😪 and my molding is high as well..trying to save some time. Thanks in advance!
Ok, so I’ve painted several cabinets. The key to any project is preparation. I’ve used this same technique on my daughters bathroom vanity with great success. First and foremost you must make sure the cabinets are clean and free from grease. Then I still recommend a light scuffing, a good primer, and then a quality paint.
Tell us about the sprayer you use.
Thank you for sharing this. I am about to start a similar project but I do not have a sprayer. What would be my other options? In the list of tools listed at Homedepot, none of the links shows the hose and what it is connect to or spraying with. Help please
First off, thank you for watching. The stayer setup I’m using is not unique by any means but some would consider it expensive. The air hose and spray gun are from my days painting cars in my younger years. You can buy the hose and a spray gun at harbor freight for cheap...there are tons of videos about the purple spray gun from harbor freight. The compressor I’m using is a husky (Home Depot) 20 gallon upright compressor.
Other options would be brushing the piece(s)...but for me that is too time consuming and labor intensive. You can also use a Graco hand held sprayer (I use it in another of my videos).
Let me know how your project turns out
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO Thank you very much for replying and tips
You are welcome.
Hi Tony, How has the chairs held up 2 years later? Also can I use a dark gray pant over the white primer. I was told you can tint the primer, but it might lose some of its bonding attributes.
Hi Tony, I'd like to know how well they've held up too... Kelly, I know they sell grey primer actually! I've bought mine before at Home depot
Does this go for all wood furniture?
Does the primer 1 2 3 you suggested had a bad/strong smell? I have COPD and the furniture can not be taken out doors. Any other suggestions?
It does have a smell, but not overly strong. It is a shellac based primer and is an interior type primer. Either way I would recommend providing plenty of ventilation.
What kind of an air compressor do I use for the paint sprayer, and which sprayer did you use.. thanks
I’m using a 20 gallon Husky sprayer from Home Depot. Ideally you want a bigger compressor (so you don’t have to constantly wait for it to recover), but for small projects it works fine. I’ve even sprayed kitchen cabinets using it.
Gorgeous work, thanks for the video. I have a question though...How do you clean the white chairs after you've painted them?
Great question. You could topcoat with a flat water based poly. Then it’s a simple wipe down with a mild cleaner. Or do like we do and just don’t use them 😂
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO Thanks for the idea!
The purple paint gun that you recommended from harbor freight has a 1.4 nozzle. Can you spray the primer you used with that gun?
I’ve never personally used the purple gun but this particular primer is thin so I wouldn’t see a problem with it
What color stain is the table top? Any videos on that?
How long did it take to complete?
If I want to sand to prep, what grit do you recommend?
Just to scuff for adhesion purpose, I use 220 or 320
I dont see the spray gun you used! What spray gun do you use???
Oh, I’m in the Hobby Lobby Statistic…”no that’s not true, I just made all that up” 😹
What stain is the top of the table? I love it
I believe it is special walnut by minwax and then sealed with boiled linseed oil.
Thank you for your video. I wanted to see how you do it upside down first. Don’t quite understand the primer only part.
We just went with the primer because it really mimics the “chalk paint” look/feel. It covers well and no need for tip coat is that is what you want
Tony, really. I never saw anyone do that. Certainly saves some steps.
Always wondered if I could just use a tinted primer and top coat it, thanks!
I ran across your video. Did you have to thin the primer for spray gun ?? And how you clean spray gun ? Thank you for your help
Great questions! No thinning was required (BIN primer is thin like water). Unfortunately to clean the spray gun is a little difficult...I use denatured alcohol per the instructions on the can of primer.
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO thank you so much.
@@thuywebb3619 no problem! Glad to help
How have they held up? I’m doing exactly this, using all your recommendations, just minus sprayer (brush) but will be spraying the water based poly (bought that in spray paint cans) to finish off! Please let me know if ud recommend anything diff than what’s in this vid, based on 3 years of wear? Thx!!!! Just subscribed!
I just sprayed these this last year. Also, they are in our formal dining room so they don’t get used and abused too much. However, I recommend this finishing technique along with the recommended # of coats of water based poly to achieve max protection. Additionally you may decide to top coat the primer with a paint and then coat with poly.
Did you hand paint the primer? I do not have a sprayer
@@deniseklipppenstein-garcia6122 hi! I did 3 coats of shellac primer, let dry for 2 days, then 2 coats of white spray paint (the fancy rustOleum stuff that includes a primer in it), then let dry for 2 days, then 3 Coats water based primer in spray can form. My stools turned out fantastic!!!
Also, do you have to use an air compressor with a paint sprayer?
For this type of sprayer yes. However Graco makes a hand held airless sprayer that I love for small projects. amzn.to/3yU6V2I
They also make a hvlp sprayer that looks similar to this that comes with its own turbine…but it can be an expensive investment for just a small job.
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO THANK YOU! I just have a few Windsor chairs to paint.
Nice job! Did you paint you table too? Can you tell me what stain or color did you use ?
I built the table many years before this. I used special walnut stain.
Ok looking to to paint my dining table and chairs I have a very similar dining table I don’t want to get something that is not going to be very sturdy like mine for a very expensive price thanks again!
What paint sprayer is easiest to use? I don’t see yours in the description box, thanks 👍
Mine is an old sprayer I bought many years ago when I was painting cars. Harbor freight has a good one (it is purple colored). Just make sure you clean the paint gun really well and remove any of the oils left over from manufacture.
The paint gun I have, has a 1.7mm spray tip. It works well but having a bit bigger tip would help when spraying thicker paints (it works perfect when spraying the BIN primer which is thinner)
Do you have to put any thinner in the sprayer with the paint? Or just a bigger tip?
What size air compressor?
I use a 20 gallon Husky air compressor. Works fine for small jobs but does struggle with larger jobs.
Thank you!
How much primer and paint did you go through?
Believe it or not, the only finish on here is the BIN primer (my wife loved the finish and texture of the primer). And if I remember correctly, I may have used 1 but no more than 2 quarts.
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO Thank you.
Where is the Table from
Thanks for watching. I built the table, probably 10 years ago.
Dang, nice job, it’s beautiful!!
You can use poly in a paint sprayer???!!! Is this for real?? Just saved me a headache. This was a great video!!
Yes you can. As long as the sprayer needle size can handle the viscosity.
There are some stains and knots that will bleed through any primer... however, they usually will not bleed through shellac. Prep is painful no matter what, but nothing will infuriate you more than prepping and painting only to have to duplicate the work.
You are correct. The primer used in this video is a shellac based primer for that very reason. I’ve used it on raw pine with bad knots and had it work perfect. I always say prep prep prep.
I actually edited out some audio where I told my wife we teach people the right way to do things on this channel...that is why I gave the disclaimer that she was the boss and wanted it done.
So much info idk what to do lol another video said not to use polyurethane bc it turns white yellow…
Anything oil based has the potential to turn yellow…I use water based poly. No yellow
You are literally sanding the chair within 1 minute of the video....
Somebody didn’t watch (and listen) to the video…
