- I spotted this chest next to a dumpster while I was driving around one day. Follow along with me as I give this furniture a makeover that will make it look like high end centerpiece rather than being destined for the dump. I also timed myself to show how long it takes to paint furniture. This is just scratching the surface of furniture painting profits but I may do more in the future if you all like it. THANK YOU to all of my channel members. I know I'm supposed to add this at the end of the video but I forgot and the video took like 10 hours to upload and I just now remembered and like, even though you all mean a lot to me and even though I rarely post videos y'all still seem to waste your money for those silly paint brush chat/comment badges and toasty emojis (k not gonna lie those are kinda cool)... but I'm not going to sit here another 10 hours just to see your names scroll across the screen for like 5 seconds. For real, it takes me like 30 minutes to make it do that. I'm slow. I know most of you skip through the video to the end just to see that part anyhow so I think this long run-on sentence will suffice, even though you probably skimmed through this too. Love y'all. ❤️ - Jak na to + styl
Can you believe people throw stuff out like this? This happens all the time around me. Do you find stuff like this where you live?
EDIT: This piece is now available for purchase on my website: thatshabbyguy.com/
Yes, I hearted my own comment and I'm not ashamed.
Beautiful piece 😍
I am astonished. I restore everything and fix everything just becuase I can
I see stuff like this out by me, but you gotta be fast if you want it. It doesn't stay around long. keep up the good work!
Not stuff quite like that but sometimes some curb side treasures. Nice find! Loving what you did with it 🙌
I’m so impressed, I couldn’t imagine a red dresser, but it’s a piece of ART now, and an heirloom for time.
A throw away dresser that looks like it could fit right in a castle. Beautiful!!
If only, the people who discarded that cabinet could see it now... I love the gold over the red... It's a gorgeous piece... you did a great job.
First Off, that Piece turned out INCREDIBLE!!!! CANNOT IMAGINE THROWING THAT OUT!!!! I mean, it was in GREAT SHAPE to begin with!!!! Oh well, their wastefulness certainly helped you out!!!! KUDOS!!!!
What a great find. You rescued that piece from the landfill and gave it a new life. Someone will love that piece for years to come. Very nice job!
Dang, when I saw you paint it red I thought “he’s ruining it”. I was sooooooo wrong! This is stunning! The rub and buff totally elevates this piece. Gorgeous.
Yes I did too😂 but finished ...I was stunned😮😊
Would prefer a darker wood top but the red is stunning!!!!!
I like that you did not shy away from the use color. I watch several restoration videos like this, and while the creators are able turn a distressed piece of furniture into a work of art, so many of them seem to be afraid to use vibrant colors. I love your choice of colors here. The way you blended the red with the black and gold allows the red to stand out without it being overpowering. I love ❤️ it!!
😊
People don't do color because they say it's difficult to sell.😢 Everyone wants neutral colors like white black and gray
@@KMF3 ~ That’s very true. I understand their hesitance, especially when the objective is make some money. You have to be very careful when using vibrant colors. If I were to use them I would probably keep the finished product.
@@LauraDiamondWise I use them and sell but it can be hard to find the right buyer.
u
I freaked out when I saw the red paint, but when you finally finished it was gorgeous! Great work!
Gorgeous ❤😮
Beautiful ❤
Trust Shabby, trust. He's got this.
Same! But it turned out gorgeous 🤩
Same here 😂 the end results ❤ beautiful I would buy that 🥰
The glazing and gilding accomplishes the core of artistry: accentuating the piece with shadows and highlights. Love it!
Thanks.
Too much gold on hardware but nice
I love it. I usually think I would not like red furniture, but pieces like this just proves me wrong.
I’m constantly amazed at the things people throw out. I love when people like yourself take the time to redo items that not only make them useful again but beautiful. The gold you added at the end is what pulled the whole project together. Awesome ❤
Right? I've found my favorite pieces that were out for trash. We've found a china cabinet, 3 desks, a Danish atomic ceiling lamp and a few of those two tiered tables - all mid century modern, and worth hundreds or thousands of $.
I admit I was a little worried about your red color choice. Then you added that dark glaze which made a big difference. The final decision to highlight the details of the dresser with gold guilding wax was perfection! It is truly unbelievable that someone threw that piece away. Fantastic job!! 👏🎉👏
Absolutely stunning!!! You did an excellent job on this dresser.
I wasn't too enamored with it until you put the gold on. It's gorgeous! Very classy looking.
I absolutely love this piece, the red and gold are just gorgeous! It could be a dresser, entry way piece or a dining room buffet with all that storage….a beautiful piece of free furniture🥰
Great transformation. You are an artist , with great vision .
No gold is more my jam, but both versions are gorge. A sheet of tampered glass or a random Craigs List slab if marble or granite from another piece could take it to another level. I score lots for free or under $100 over the years which never needed any mods. 🥰😍This looks GORGEOUS!
Don't you just love those kind of finds... I know I do 😁
Yesssssss!!👩🏽🦱
I loved the piece as it was, so I was skeptical, however you surprised me, the end result is gorgeous! Well done!
Just found your channel and subscribed after watching this video. I was literally talking to my phone saying NOOOO with your color, stain, and glaze choices. However…I stand corrected. That piece came out gorgeous!!! It looks like an expensive accent piece from a high end furniture store. Love it
I do this very thing all the time. Then, I came out with an education on creativity. He was one of my first teachers on the glazing effect.
I'm always amazed at what people will just throw away! It turned out Beautiful
It no longer looks like anything one would find at Rooms To Go, it is a lot more elegant. Very good job!
Honestly, when you painted it red, I thought how ugly. What you did to it after is just plain beautiful!!! I love it!
I thought that too, but i said to myself....just wait! Brilliant finish.
The gold really helped
Wow, that came out fantastic! From dull and boring to an expensive looking piece of quality designer furniture, you do great work!
It came out soooo beautiful. What a find, and you did a super job on it.
A beautiful piece when you’re done. Good work. Nice to see how you sprayed paint. 👍
Your color selections are amazing. so nice to see someone not afraid of color. Great job on the chest.. thank you for sharing
Red... SUPER bold. Sorry bout the oil spill. At least it wasn't on your dining room carpet. Thanks for the roach/bedbug tip.
What a beautiful save. It’s an all around win, saving the piece from the landfill, giving it a second life, and making a living for yourself. Perfectly done! ❤
Looks really good! A before and after shot side by side would have made a nice ending to the video, but I know editing isn’t always fun or easy.
This is just beautiful. The addition of the dark stain and gold highlights give it an art deco feel. Love it.
Really looks great. Bold statement pieces are cool
(I laughed out loud when I saw you crack a smile when you said you didn't want the stripper to dry out.~and the giggle on your end time of 4:20)
Was going to comment on the smirk, also.😁😁😁
You are one of the very best craftsmen on CZcams. You and Chester the upholstery guy from Russia are two of my very favorites. You never ruin a piece modifying it, you just make it look really good.
Wow, thanks!
I would add Kacha too.
With the tiny booboos you made and trying to fix them resulted in this amazing furniture. Awesome! The way you think of a solution right after you made a booboo reminds me of how I try to fix my cake decorating when I made booboos. That is the creativity in you - and that is really amazing. Thanks for sharing this video.
Stunning!!! You threw me off with the black handles, but after you applied the gold it was GORGEOUS!!!
Wonderful rescue! And very nice video style with the timing and details. Felt sorry for you for the spilled stain, happened to me more than once. I would suggest you count the time cleaning tools, brushes, rags, I think it’s part of the flipping process (maybe the less pleasant part). 😊
Thanks. I added the disclaimer at the end of that part for this purpose.
Very impress with the finish product. I loved the description of all the products used & brief explanations.🙏
11:44 I can attest that while it is necessary to allow the stripper ample time to work, you definitely want to assure that the stripper is off before it starts drying, as the subsequent scraping is likely to damage your wood... Agree 100%. Also, do not apply a stripper to your wood in direct sunlight. That will cause the stripper to dry very quickly, potentially damaging your wood's surface.
Lovely job. It's a shame that people throw away usable stuff, but then there are people like you who find it and give it new life.
Gorgeous!😮❤ And so carefully and precisely done! Very Impressive ! Love it!❤
To be completely honest I thought it looked really bad until you put on the finishing touches. The finished product looks amazing!
I love it.
I'm very impressed with your work and attention to detail! If this had been in my shop, I probably would have black laquered the top to complete the Chinese inspiration of the piece. I'm just not loving the pale color of the top, but that's just one person's humble opinion. Kudos!
That came out so good. The glazing really made it special. Of course, your vision and talent is what made it special.
Thank you! Cheers!
From trash to treasure! I just feel people waste so much and people like you are saviors to keep the land fills empty. Your hard work and skills make this project successful. Cheers!
Oh wow! That came out beautifully. When you started adding the dark stain I wasn’t sure where you were going with it. It looks gorgeous.
Where we live you have to put a sign that says "free" on it, even near the trash. I wonder how many pieces get destroyed because the person doesn't know or doesn't bother. ❤ Thank you for actually showing us what you did and what you used! You are a great teacher!!
Where I live, people will snatch it if you dont have it tied down. I left a night stand near my garage one evening and the next morning someone had taken it. Someone had to walk up my driveway and carry this thing to their truck. Imagine trespassing and stealing for a piece of furniture. They must have needed it more than I did.
What a transformation. I love the Art Deco feel you gave it.
I like the TSP for getting dirt, wax and silicone off the furniture. If you don’t get the silicone off too it’s going to mess up the finish and wearability. Great work!! Love it !!❤
The personality of that piece of furniture definitely needed to be that shade of red. Beautiful, instructional, clear, spontaneous, honest, low key video... enjoyable all of it. All good!
It is amazing. I'm speechless. And I see you had a vision in your mind before starting.
The most wonderful Rooms To Go furniture I've ever seen, I was thinking you'd be asking more for it on your etsy.
And the way you did this video with your relaxed clear showing and teaching, showing your experience even boo boo's, explaining everything and the products & how they feel and act to use them - superb!
You did a out of this world job, you are AMAZING!!!!
You're killing me, Shabby Guy! Watching this video, I realize how overly careful I am when working on projects. Lol. When you set the phone up, I thought for sure you'd either shield it somehow or move the dresser over. Nope! And then you set up the BRAND NEW power station (which is so cool!!) and didn't shield that either. 😳 I was just picturing all the overspray getting on both of them. Aaaaaa!! 😉
That being said, it's so great that you found this dresser and gave it new life! This is the kind of piece to have fun with, and that you did. Those handles were actually pretty nice for a generic piece. Love the red, love the stained top, love the glazing, love the whole process. ❤️
I am loving it since you stained to paint! It looks like a glaze and makes it soooo much better!!! ❤️❤️❤️
And then, the gold!!! Stunning!!!!
I think you could sell that for alot more than $400. It’s freaking gorgeous!
Definitely agree. You could get at least 200 more for it. It's just gorgeous!
Stunning work as always ❣❣❣
Watching the paint stripping is so satisfying 😴
When I lived in an apartment complex in Arlington, ppl would abandon whole apartment full of furniture and to find furniture in or next to the dumpster was almost a daily
Truly TRASH to TREASURE 💚💚💚
You see a lot of furniture that looks like this in big box stores, but I’ve never seen anyone flip one. Thanks for making it happen!
Your piece has an Asian design flair. I could see this piece in an entry way with a fabulous mirror over it plus a couple of tassles with asian beads. This piece is very stunning!
I admit, when I saw the red paint I was like what? Then you sanded it and then the gold!! 😮it turned out beautiful! ❤Why was I even doubting you? You’re amazing!
What a beautiful job you have done!!!!! Congratulations !!!!!!!
OMG😮😮😮😮😮! Unbelievable! I can't believe the things that people throw away. Even if I've grown tired of a piece of furniture, I'll ask around first if anyone is interested and I'll give it away. If that doesn't work, I'll donate it to Goodwill, Salvation Army, or any Thrift Store. People should always remember "One Man's Trash is another Man's Treasure", this is certainly a treasure in my opinion. What a Great Find and Great Video!!👍👍
This is a case of someone being forced to move quickly and most likely leaving things behind. Then the apartment complex comes in and puts everything to the dumpster. I can furnish a whole house in one or two months of I stalk trash days, especially the beginning of the month when people are evicted
@@ThatShabbyGuy: I'm a subscriber now and I look forward to future restorations like this. Great Job!!!
I love the chest. It is stunning. You shouldn't have any problems selling it.
Wasn't sure about that gold at first but wow does it work! It marries the light top to the red body. Beautiful. Cannot believe what people throw out. I'm so delighted there's an army of restorers out there reminding us that we can and should repurpose what we have. You're a pro!
Wow great job!! Love how the handles turned out!! Big fan of rub n buff.❤
So beautiful. Another piece saved from a landfill. Thank you.
Wow, I loved how you glazed the red paint and the gold rub was a great idea, it elevated the style and look of the piece. It came out stunning and unique. You’ll sell this in a day!!❤
You made a regular dresser look absolutely gorgeous!! I would be proud to have that in my home. Great job! You can count me as a new subscriber to your channel.
What an amazing job you did! Loved the finishing touches!
Well, I didn't really like the colour at first but the gold accent does something that makes it look quite elegant. I like it. Good job.
Wow I can' t believe that people don't want these. I love it. I'm so sad I have no place for wonderful things, because I want to rescude them too. Sooooooo wonderful, I wish I could buy itb
I absolutely love how that piece came out. Gorgeous
New subscriber here. Love the results of this find! You gave it a awesome new life. Well done 🙂
So that's where the pairs of socks hide!! Great job!! Good vibes and Namaste!!
I never get tired of red! Beautiful!
A beautiful transformation; this piece of furniture was thankfully rescued from the landfill. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
OMG I never see items like that, not even for sale let alone free.....and it turned out stunning ❤
Thank you for sharing this, I love it I was shocked when I saw the red paint. But I learned something new! It looks fantastic I’m glad you put the gold on, it beautiful piece of art!❤❤❤ it.
Oh you created a beautiful dresser for an intry way i❤ love your work 🤩 👍🌹✌️
Beautiful job ! If you want a more aged but subtle antique look, one way is taking the base color and go slightly darker or lighter....and i do mean slight. Water it down a bit and sponge,{natural} this from a freshly painted disposable plate, or use a loose crumbled up plastic bag...and go hog wild smashing it on, flipping and rolling as you go all over. Random & uneven is the key... let it dry. if too heavy, sand it. Then when you go over it with a glaze, you'll be amazed how the surface comes alive. Also, the Rub-N-Buff doesn't come off with light wear, Heavy wear ... definitely ! ...remember, even metal wears from daily use. The more important detail with these metal colors is the fact that they will oxidize and change with time, spraying with any sealer stops this. Good luck !
Your final product turned out much better than I originally thought. This was very interesting to watch. Great job.
Turned out absolutely gorgeous!
WOW - what a great job. Looks completely different😯👌👏👏
What a beautiful transformation. I didn't even envision something as eye-popping as this color. So lovely. Great job.
Great to see your post! I hope you are doing well. Thanks for the great instructional video, the dresser looks amazing!
Thanks so much! 😊
Very nice finished piece! My first thought was that I wouldn't have painted it red but this is gorgeous. I like how you explain everything. Thanks for a great tutorial.
What a free find! I remember spilling a full can of stain in my old garage too, worst feeling... also hitting your knee at 41:55 reminded me of the Peter Griffin scene where he hurts his knee
Beautiful! Thank you for the video:)!!
Looks fantastic. I'm afraid I mostly see old upholstered pieces that have usually been left out in the rain. Ugh
That turned out beautiful! That color is stunning! Especially after you used the gold.
Very nice and the gold was the perfect touch to finish it!
Love the gold added to everything!!!
Beautiful!!
I like what you're doing and subscribed a while back. I need to make a suggestion. Instead of setting the piece you're working on on paint cans on the floor, you could get an ATV lift and make a bigger top for it. That way you could put the paint cans and the piece you're refinishing on the lift. It can be raised and lowered as needed, saving a lot of bending down and trying to get to hard to reach areas. I thought of this for some of the stuff I do once I have the space to do larger projects..
Great suggestion!
Beautiful job!! Toning down the red and adding gold accent trim sure enhances the piece and makes it look expensive despite it not being real wood.
I totally agree!
I backed up when you waved those nasty socks at me. Pretty sure I could smell them from here. Rub N Buff is the bomb. We'll all be long dead before that gold wears off those handles. I really liked the effect of it over the black paint. It amazes me what people throw away. Someone is going to love having that dresser. Nicely done!
BEAUTIFUL!
Absolutely loving the red!! Awesome job! 😁
Gorgeous transformation! Love the color!
Glad you like it!
Awesome find in great condition. It has a whole new life.
Great work! It's beautiful. I like the result of buffing gold wax and furniture wax with an old pair of pantyhose. It creates a gorgeous sheen.
My opinion is the top wood should've been stained much darker. Also, the rest should've been painted black first, then a dark red over it. Then use steel wool to distress through the red for black highlights as opposed to the gold. The top is not a high or even medium quality wood. You should've painted a harlequin pattern with the red and left the wood stain as the second color of the harlequin. Then distress the red a bit. The hardware should've been an ultra gloss black. The top would've popped big time and made it a whimsical piece. Right now your eye goes to the cheesy gold highlights. Line the drawer bottoms with a fun fabric and you could've gotten $1,000 from some bored rich person. LOL. You do know your stuff though as far as technique.
So nice to see you again. This piece turned out amazing. I wasn't sure about the red paint, but once you antiqued it with the stain, it made a huge difference and I love it. The gold gives it that wow factor. Hope you're doing well and we see you more often posting video's. Take care!
