Phil Hanley began standup comedy by performing at open mics around Vancouver, often in between bands at music venues. In these establishments he discovered and honed his unique blending of material and crowd interaction that makes no two of his performances the same. Phil’s style can best be described as unpredictably reflective, delivered with sharp accuracy, and rooted in the grand tradition of joke-telling.
Phil's Comedy Central "The Half Hour" premiered November 14, 2015. Phil has previously been seen on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, The Pete Holmes Show, John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show, and @midnight. He has been showcased at numerous comedy festivals and can be seen regularly at The Comedy Cellar in New York City.

I’ve got a running list of my top favorite rising stars in comedy, and you just landed right near the top. If I organized it based on a talent-to-subscriber ratio, you’d probably be #1. Watching this special just now after seeing you had less than 10K YT followers going into it just blew my mind. Only now am I realizing that I already knew your face-and one of your perfectly timed improvised punchlines-from at least one (or two?) of Sam Morril’s recent specials.
I’ll definitely be bringing you up to the other comics and comedy fans at the next local open mic I hit, and now that I’m subscribed I’ll await your future content with eager anticipation. I know it will bring hope to my fellow local comedians that someone who’s been working the craft for as long as you have has finally just put out such a brilliant full-length special after what upon a cursory glance appears to be nearly a decade or more in the game. I wholly believe that there’s lots more to come and can’t wait to watch your star rise! 🌟

Discovered Phil about 4 days ago.
My new favourite comedian.
Went to see Phil tonight in San Francisco. Not the best front row crowd. But Phil made something out of nothing. Great talent, great timing, funny as heck. Even spoke to him for a minute after the show with my wife. Really a genuine seeming guy. Not egotistical like many successful entertainers. He initially had one SF show scheduled. Sold out 4 in 3 days in "The City."
Coz the front row crowd kept walking in and out, they missed half the joke😉
I laughed the hardest on the “dating a girl going through a divorce is like moving into a house that’s on fire.”
Killing that crowd and working that room like a comedic ninja!The world needs more Phil Hanley! Essentially one of the BEST at his craft! (and he's a fellow Deadhead and amazing human being)

Funny beyond words. Between his delivery and crowd work, he's a unique talent. Also, easy on the eyes.
Guy’s got it all - spontaneity and it’s sister wit, remarkable timing. And the way he works his crowd, makes it look like he shows up with absolutely no material, everything off the cuff. Super bright! All of this is, for sure, got to be deeply rooted in incredible warmth. How do I know this? Cos I’m Canadian and one outstanding quality of the Canadian man is to show affection to his buddies by teasing them, really whippin’ the snot out of them.
That audience has got to have left there absolutely loving Phil Hanley!

The way you jump in between people in the same "crowd-work" instead of just focusing on one person feels so natural. You'll focus on one person but connect whatever the subject to another you have spoken to previous (or not). It's like juggling. Really fascinating. Patrice used to do that, obviously in his specific way. Most just hone in on one person then move on. You keep the joke going WHILE doing crowd-work AND bouncing between people.
