      It'd be pretty impossible to make any money doing that, particularly as there's a certain skill level required to bodge the better MOSFETs into the original controller. It's also not really the easiest, quickest way to make a fast scooter - just the way I wanted to do it. There are some upgrade kits out there already for E300s which do offer folks varying levels of success.

    I got a razor e300s brand new last December and I have bearly used it due to the fact I can't go full throttle in my area. where I am can only go around 5 miles and hour but I've saw you can get a variable speed throttle so I plan on getting one of these and hopefully I get more battery out of it because instead of having to go on and off the throttle to keep it around 5mhp I will be able to just hold it around that speed with the new throttle and therfor i think I'll get more battery life. Please let me know and thank you.

    • @WhatUpTKHere
      @WhatUpTKHere  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Kenny, well, it depends if you choose a 500W motor that also has a higher RPM/Volt rating than the stock one.
      I made the mistake of choosing a more powerful motor, but one that turned slower at 36V than the stock one. This meant I had to muck around changing gears.
      I suggest checking out my video on photo tachometers, and then using one to measure the no-load RPM of your current motor on 36V. Then you can shop around to see if you can find a higher power motor that also runs at the right speed.
      Can be tricky! You can always consider changing gearing, too, of course.

    • @WhatUpTKHere
      @WhatUpTKHere  Před 7 lety

      Aaron Amberson hm, not sure what you mean by a wavy noise, but I get a shuffling sound from the brake regularly because the band brake has a very flexible frame and the band often rubs.

    • @1fastboi
      @1fastboi Před 7 lety

      Ok thanks. I'll try adjusting the brake, but it does seem that the axle IS actually bent. It's either that or razor did a dandy job of centering the sprocket. Is there a way to bend the axle back? no clue how it got bent.

    • @WhatUpTKHere
      @WhatUpTKHere  Před 7 lety

      no real decent way of bending the axle back straight. you'd want a new part.
      can be bent quite easily through bumps or dropping off kerbs, depending on how thick the axle is versus the weight of the rider.
      I had this problem often with my earlier scooter builds due to being an adult riding a scooter spec'd for children.

  • @hylacemess
    @hylacemess Před 7 lety

    Most of the heat is comming from that double diode. The same current that passes through your MOSFET also passes through these diodes. I am actually surprised they hold up so well. Give it a somewhat more generous diode and the temps should go down quit significantly

    • @WhatUpTKHere
      @WhatUpTKHere  Před 7 lety

      +hylacemess I'm not sure I follow - those diodes I believe are snubber diodes which are there to block spikes from the motor's back EMF, so there shouldn't be any major current flow through it?

    • @hylacemess
      @hylacemess Před 7 lety

      The way this controller is build is most likely as follows: Motor is connected to battery + and MOSFET drain. MOSFET source is connected to battery -. By twisting the throttle the controler starts switching the MOSFET on for short amounts of time. During these time slots current starts to flow through both motor and MOSFET. The slope however is not infinitly steap. Instead it ramps up with a rate which is proportional to the inductance of the motor (it is a big coil in the end). Remember: Inductors resisit current changes. This is key to understand what the diode is for. It is connected antiparallel to the Motor. That means it is in reverse direction so that in motor resting state it does not conduct. Otherwise it would short out the motor. As the MOSFET is now switched off the current in the motor is not able to instandly go back to zero. Just like before it slowly ramps down. Only this time the current can not go through the MOSFET as it is turned off. That is when the diode starts conducting. The motor current over time looks like triangles joind end to end. The rising slope is going through the MOSFET and the falling one is going through the Diode. So the average current through MOSFET and diode are the same.

    • @WhatUpTKHere
      @WhatUpTKHere  Před 7 lety

      +hylacemess ah yes, I see. I can confirm the circuit is set up in that way.
      I may spec a better diode; when you say "more generous", what precisely do you mean?

    • @hylacemess
      @hylacemess Před 7 lety

      Do you have any reliable estimate of the motor current? As I am pretty sure the answer is no, "more generouse" means exaclty that ;) The original diode handles about 30A continuous (by the way 45v max, so thats pretty close, too). Finding a diode in a package that fits in your controler might proofe challenging. Also doubling up on them might be your only choice.

    @ukaszjot8078 Před 7 lety

    Just spotted from your speed calculations that you are running on 9" wheels. Consider switching to 10". It will fit with the new motor (since it does for me and I have the same setup). You'll get a bit more ground clearance (I'm not complaining on bumpy corners) and a bit better ride and handling.

    • @WhatUpTKHere
      @WhatUpTKHere  Před 7 lety

      Yeah, I'm running whatever came on the scooter. If there's an easy 10" upgrade it could be cool.

    • @ukaszjot8078
      @ukaszjot8078 Před 7 lety

      Just try to check if bigger tire would fit your rim. I can take some measurements of my rim if you'd like. My scooter was factory equipped with 3.00-4, 10" tires. Might not sound like that big of a difference, but just looking on your ground clearance it is way smaller. I have totally no problem when cornering. Try to check if this was only the tire that was changing depenging on region/version, or if also rim might be different.
      Also planning to put a disk brake for the rear tire. Just returned from a ~6km ride and while I am not concerned with drive and electronics (the motor is only a little bit warm) I feel that the scooter brakes way worse after getting hot. I already have on the way some stuff from aliexpress to convert it to disc brake. Will see how much rework will be necessary to fit it in.

    • @WhatUpTKHere
      @WhatUpTKHere  Před 7 lety

      Any chance you can measure your tyre circumference and get back to me? I was pretty sure I was running 10 inchers already haha.

      Thanks for the tip on controllers by the way. I might have to scope out a good 36V one as I would like to try variable throttle.

    • @ukaszjot8078
      @ukaszjot8078 Před 7 lety +1

      The circumference of my wheel is around 800mm, that's why I noticed when you were calculating yours (I was already using it to install a simple bike computer with speed indicator). You can see a difference with a bare eye. I'll try to get you some photos. I would ask guys from electricscooterparts if there's a different size of rim for 9 and 10 inch wheels for razor. If it's the same - you can just purchase new tubes and tires.
      I'm still waiting for parts for disc brake, since the simple drum brake gets quite hot after ~6km ride from work and I can feel how braking is affected (when the drum is hot it basically cannot convert more energy into heat).
      Also thinking of making the handlebar a bit wider. Might make it a bit more stable on tight corners and bumpy pavements. Maybe just cut the original one and weld a mounting for bicycle handlebar? Who knows...maybe then I would be more comfortable with a bit more toque when starting and I would remove the 25A limit :D

    In my experiance with close to the same setup, I'd say you are over gearing it. The motor is getting hot because it's not turning enough rpm. I think you'd get closer to your target with a lower gear.

  • @TechKnowCSS
    @TechKnowCSS Před 6 lety +1

    Your chain tensioner is installed WRONG! It must be on the botom chain (chain return to the motor) and lifting up, What you have is on the torque side lifting up which dose nothing but try to lift chain against the FULL torque of the motor. Put it on right and the chain can be looser reduceing drag and binding while the tensioner keeps the chain from flopping. This might get you over 40kph. Hope thid helps.

    totally awesome series. I'm revamping my Schwinn S180 that was already fitted with a Currie 24v 500w motor overvolted at 36v, 15T pinion and 65T rear sprockets. Topped out at 33+ mph with me on it at 195-200lbs. It gets pretty warm, so I'm going to regear at 15/55, drop it back to 24V but using 4 12v batteries in a series parallel config to increase range.
    The YK31c controller has the shunt mod and has held up thus far, but I'm a little worried about current draw with the new gearing and less voltage. Should I get a rolling start before throttling to prevent huge current spikes? Also, that diode thing you were talking about below.... could going higher value there decrease my controller temps?

    • @WhatUpTKHere
      @WhatUpTKHere  Před 5 lety

      Diode is just for snubbing the back EMF, so shouldn't need to change.
      Definitely riding it easy should help, but it can be tough to ride soft to protect a controller. See how you go!
