    Personnel:
    Gregg Allman - organ, vocals
    Duane Allman - guitar, vocals
    Dickey Betts - guitar, vocals
    Berry Oakley - bass, vocals
    Butch Trucks - drums
    Jai Johanny Johanson - drums
    Tom Doucette - harp
    Summary:
On this date, Bill Graham assembled a stellar roster of bands to participate in the filming of a television special called Welcome To The Fillmore East for broadcast on educational channels. Short sets were filmed by the Byrds, the Elvin Bishop Group, Sha-Na-Na, Van Morrison, and the Allman Brothers Band, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of Bill Graham and the Fillmore East staff at work.
The Allman Brothers performance is nothing short of spectacular and features the original lineup that included Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Recorded six months prior to the legendary Live At Fillmore East double album set, this performance captures the Allman Brothers when they were a relatively new band, full of youthful passion and performing what would become classic original material when it was fresh and new.
Following Bill Graham's introduction, they kick things off with a tight performance of "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'," which features the band's friend, Tom Doucette, blowing harp over the group's trademark sound. Gregg's vocal is barely audible, but it's obvious the group is full of fire. "Dreams," which follows, slows things down a bit and the group establishes a relaxed groove that showcases their trademark sound, blending elements that would eventually come to define "Southern Rock."
They hit their stride on the next number, Dickey Betts' "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed." Here, the dual guitar attack of Allman and Betts is astounding. The two guitarists intertwine and synchronize in a manner nothing short of telepathic, creating a melting pot seasoned with elements of jazz, rock, country, and blues into a style utterly their own. The set ends with a ferocious take of "Whipping Post" that features outstanding melodic bass playing from Berry Oakley, with both Duane Allman and Dickey Betts soaring over the propulsive rhythm section. Shorter than the expansive versions that would develop in coming months, this is all the more fascinating for it, as they compress an incredible amount of energy into the time allotted.
Time constrictions and vocal microphone malfunctions aside, this is still a fascinating performance. This original lineup of the band was certainly one of the most innovative and captivating bands to ever play the Fillmore.

In 13 months after this concert, Duane would be gone and a year after that, Barry would be gone. Both crashed on their motorcycles within a mile of same spot of road and buried next to each other. Barry never had a day of peace, unable to get over Duane's death. After all these decades, it all still breaks my heart. They had only just begun. Their music got me thru my late teens, they showed me what real music was and were a direct influence on what I loved to listen to ever since. Each band member had top-shelf musicianship.
Now Gregg is buried with them. Was wonderful that after so many years, he got clean, kept on with his music and helped others. He was a very grateful sober man.

I encourage us all to take a moment to note that this was only 5 days after Jimi Hendrix's untimely death. His autopsy was performed on September 21st, and he was not buried until October 1st-- he wasn't even in the ground yet. So the death of Hendrix would have been a heavy and fresh reality in the hearts and minds of these fellow true musicians. There's that little extra dark depth to this beautiful performance-- you can feel it... Rest in peace to all the departed... We will all be together again soon enough...

Duane playing slide was like listening to someone’s soul singing, without boundaries or inhibitions. He gave the electric guitar a human voice, a human soul.
Whether he was shrieking, or mourning, or announcing his youthful manhood with a kind of swaggering exuberance that was all his own, he sang to all of us thru that instrument, for the ages.

You can thank the endless quest for digital perfection, auto tune, beat detective, Cutting and pasting without playing the song all the way through. If you do that long enough, the next generation won't have the faintest idea how to improvise. Most people are used to being micromanaged and told what to do from womb to tomb anyway.

It never changes tempo, there are no breaks, no key changes no bridges, no solos, no instruments except for the same digital keyboard presets on every song (?) What do you call this stuff anyway? And the same canned beat on all of it.
Now, take "we can work it out" from the Beatles. It has 3 different time signatures and a key change within a 3&1/2 minute song. Within that short time span, it takes you on a little musical journey, and back home again like a good composition should do. If they heard this drivel that passes for music today,

One thing I rarely see amongst the comments is the observation that this was a time of fertile cross pollination between many genres. Folk, electric, country, jazz, soul were being blended by Miles, Sly, Jimi, the Byrds after Gram joined were progenitors of what became country rock. The late 60’s were a volatile magical time and the early 70’s extended it. These guys got back together and began their long stand of shows at the Beacon and night after night, they were like Duke Ellingtons band, playing the repertoire just a little different, sometimes a lot different in the solos and order of who played first. Seeing this footage just reminds me of how much we lost after Duane rode into the sunset. Shalom

as much of an impact that duane and dickey's twin lead guitar stuff had on the sound of their music, the absolute powerhouse freight train that was butch and jaimoe had every bit as much an impact on the sound of this band. There aren't very many drummers who you could identify with no other musical context, but you can instantly identify this drum section as butch and jaimoe without any doubt. The ABB simply would not be what it was without those two back there laying a rock solid foundation on every tune. That sound they had was incredible even just by itself, but paired with the rest of the top notch musicians in that band it became even more alive and powerful. There has not ever been a drumming duo quite like those two.
