You can over winter them. They will drop leaves but just vacuum under them once a week. Also you can soak them in the winter as well. Mine is doing great by soaking it once or twice a week. I will try the epsom salt bath too! Thanks

Is maidenhair fern could accept epsom salt as we know those fern are little fussy with chemicals
@@aribinu8910 That’s a great question! You might want to dilute the mixture with more water than epsom salt and then see how the plant reacts. I haven’t tried the epsom salt bath on that variety of fern. So, I can’t say for sure how it would react.
How often do you do the epsom salt bath?
Great question! Some folks do it every time they water their ferns, but if the fern’s soil doesn’t need it, too much magnesium can actually do damage to it. For ours, I will typically gauge (by visual inspection) whether or not it needs a good soak and a little extra boost of minerals. Hope that helps.
What do you do when your fern gets a little frost bite?
Great question! If it’s just a little bit of the fronds that have been damaged, I will prune those off and bring the ferns inside to warm up. But if the roots have been exposed to low temps overnight and are severely damaged, I have yet to see them fully recover.
What are the benefits of giving An Epsom salt bath. Do the minerals help the plant thrive.
Great question, Maria! Epsom salt contains magnesium and sulfur, which along with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, help with growth, chlorophyll production, and resistance to disease and pests. Too much is not good for the ferns either. Most people limit their sessions to monthly or as needed. Hope that answers your question. I appreciate you stopping by!

@@ladyd8028 Hi there. Thank you for stopping by the hollow. This video was a short companion video on a blog post that I had written awhile back. It’s an earlier video and definitely needs to be updated. There are many plants that can benefit from an epsom salt bath, not just ferns. I use this technique on my ferns that have not been planted into the ground. Often times, my ferns that are hanging on the porch or sitting in a galvanized bucket tend to start to yellow and brown on the leaves, as the season progresses. That is when I find this epsom salt bath to be most helpful to bring life back into my outdoor ferns. I hope that helps. I apologize for now answering sooner. I appreciate you watching the video. 🖐🏻
Does normal sea salt works?
Good question. I have never personally tried it, but I know that some people do use a sea salt and water mixture to help fertilize their plants and lawns.
Epsom salt bath can be used on other house plants not just ferns, you don't have to soak them in it just add it when watering

Interesting, I never knew that. Ferns don’t really do well in El Paso. In fact I haven’t seen any in the stores here or since Covid happened. Take care ~ Janet 😘

Why would you get rid of them?
Good question! So far, I have yet to be able to keep them alive through winter, even with bringing them indoors. I’m not giving up, though! 😉

@@TheMagicialKitten That's awesome! I have heard others have the same success. I have attempted to plant ours in the ground and keep them through winter, but they didn't make it. I also have tried to divide them and keep them indoors, and those didn't make it either. Do you have mild winters in your area? Do you find that a certain type of fern does better than others for maintaining them through winter? I have two now that are doing exceptionally well and would love to see if I can keep them alive through winter.
Some of this. advice was the worst I have ever heard. If you are caring for your fern properly, you don’t have to throw it out at the end of the season. My ferns live for decades, and if I handled my ferns as roughly as in this video, half of the fronds would be damaged, broken and turn brown. No wonder she is taking shears to the bottom of her ferns! Ferns are gentle peaceful plants and that must be respected in the way they are handled. Thumbs down.
I'm sorry that it wasn't what you were expecting. I appreciate you sharing your input and will definitely take it into consideration for future fern upkeep. We live and learn and it is our hope that this channel can be a place where we can all encourage one another and learn together.
