    TASBot plays back PangeaPanga's absurd TAS of his romhack "Item Abuse 3" on an original SNES. Intended to be impossible to complete as a human, this romhack took almost 3 years to develop and TAS. This video was originally for an SGDQ 2018 submission as well as a GDQx submission. I randomly got an impulse to watch old Item Abuse videos. As someone who’s only ever played the base SMW game, the amount of familiarity with the engine and all its quirks, glitches, and exploits that it’d take to conceive of any of these obstacles, along with the patience to build them and actually _put together_ the TAS in the process to prove it’s possible - I don’t know how those tools really work or what Panga’s process was like, but I assume there was a lot of frame-by-frame input programming and testing - absolutely blows my mind.
    I have a lot of appreciation for the skill and patience of RTA speedrunners (which I know Panga does too). But TAS construction is an incredible feat of its own kind. Building a game or romhack specifically around that art, all the more so.
    Maybe it was Trimming the Herbs that planted the seed of Mario TASing in my mind again. I’m still not happy about Ahoyo waiting until a week or two after The Last Dance’s clear to confess, but taken for what it is, the construction of TtH is still something pretty impressive. The fact that Ahoyo almost cleared bombs5 legit makes it clear that he really did have a deep understanding of SMM1. I know the tool he used was kept a secret until his confession, but I don’t know if any others were developed for SMM1 between then and when uploads ended. It’d be sweet to see a 500-second level that shows the kind of expertise the Item Abuse hacks have, especially since I know SMM1 was so glitchy as to put SMM2’s broken-track teleports, fake blocks, and Wiggler hardlocks to shame. (I should ask in a place where people will actually see it, ha.) Would’ve been a lot harder to develop, I’m sure, given how much more mature SNES emulators (and presumably speedrun tools) are.
    And, of course, mad props to Sanyx for RTAing TtH. Legendary Mario feat, there.

      @jhen890 Před 5 lety +3

      Actually is not a smm2 level, is a hackrom from smw, it probably can be replicated in smm2, but that's only possible if nintendo don't patched some particular and necesary glitches to move around the level, and of course, if there's a human able to beat legitimally the level... The guy that created this hackrom, was trying to beat his own game during 3 YEARS, and he needed to use tools only aviable by emulation, so he did it, but in a TAS; "TOOL ASISTED SPEEDRUN", and since he uploaded the hackrom (prety much years before), he was the only one human that beated it, even if was with help(and taking 3 years of pracpractice... luckly, in recent years there was appear some others (humans) that beated his game too, but that guy's are only 2, and the second im not even sure if exists, was a rumor, or a TAS machine like this one, than beated it automatically...
      The point is, around the WHOLE WORLD, there's with some luck 3 guys than beated Item abuse 3, if i don't miss some one else, and ALL THEY NEEDED SPECIAL EMULATION TOOLS... you can account the humans that beated Item Abuse 3 witout even need all the fingers of only one of your hands, and all they needed help from special tools only aviable emulating... and to upload something in mario maker you have to beat your level at once... it's a littlest surrealstic belive than soon can appear a guy able to beat that thing whitout tools... and don't reminding again, the level need some certain glitches and tricks, that nintendo surely patched a big part of them...

    • @TheSquareOnes
      @TheSquareOnes Před 6 lety +14

      It's less "woah how can this game be broken" and more "woah how did Panga actually string together this much broken tech this precisely." You do realize that this hack wasn't handed down by God either, right? Someone had to actually build this piece by piece with all of the many hours of testing that entails (better even getting into the creativity of designing something this intricate). Nobody marvels at the concept of staining a canvas but it's still quite reasonable to appreciate a masterfully produced painting.

    @4:27 yellow shell #2 enters the picture.
    @4:28 yellow shell#2 goes into lava.
    @4:30 Yellow shell#1 is still travelling below that lava pool.
    @4:30-4:38 commenters confused and saying "it's a different one" (but it's actually not.)
    @4:55 end of route for yellow shell #1 and it is finally stomped on. (Just posted this with hopes of maybe clearing up some confusion?)

      they were talking about the P switch, which was a different one than the one the TAS had been juggling previously. There was some confusion on whether or not it was a dupe, it's not.

    There is no human alive that could beat this unassisted. Not only would it require an absolute understanding of everything in this level without a single nanosecond of error. The input lag of the controller would cause you to fail 100% of the time. The human brain could definitely handle this without an issue. But the lag between sight, mind and hand response as well as the electronic signal from the controller to the console to the screen and back to your brain would be far too great. This could only truly be done with a controller with nanosecond latency, eyes closed and ignoring the sounds almost completely.

    • @dwangoAC
      @dwangoAC  Před 6 lety +17

      Total lag from controller to screen would be about 16 ms, assuming a CRT. That doesn't make this any more possible, of course.

      It's OK, it's very confusing. Think of a TAS like a piano roll or tracker music, where there's a predefined sequence that is played back. That's what TASBot does, he presses buttons in order to beat games on real hardware with jaw-dropping precision.
