    Tony & Chelsea Northrup review the $6,500 full-frame 50 megapixel 30 frames per second (FPS) Sony A1 (sdp.io/a1) camera vs the $4,500 45 megapixel 20 FPS Canon EOS R5 (sdp.io/r5) camera. They test eye detect autofocus for portraits with both humans and dogs. Then, they take wildlife photos to test the bird eye AF. Next, they test two sports scenarios: photographing people running at the camera and motorsports / cars.
    The results are genuinely shocking - the Sony A1 frequently blows us away with its speed, but the less expensive Canon R5 also wins many of the comparisons!

    "Switching focus priority to Release would increase the fps but decrease the number of shots in focus" => that's actually a big assumption, and it means you didn't test. In reality, you will often find the exact opposite, and for ex. Jordan used 30fps with Release and got all his shots in focus. And what mode was the R5 on? Is there a setting to change that? If not then it's Release by default. Don't you think both cameras should be set at the same settings (or at least very similar) in a fair comparison?
    Also, it's pretty clear the 70-200GM is the bottleneck in that test. When you test a camera, you don't want to limit it, so you should use the best possible lens, in this case it could have been the 135GM for example. This is true for all tests of any kind. For example when comparing GPU speeds in games, you want to use the fastest possible CPUs as well, in order for the games not to be limited by the CPU.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 Před 3 lety +6

      The difference is that I can pair any GPU with any CPU, so testing them independently makes sense. What if I'm a sports shooter who needs the 70-200 focal length? If I get the a1, I'm stuck with their outdated glass. What the camera can do with other lenses attached is irrelevant in that scenario. I need a camera + 70-200 combination to perform well.

As far as Sony Alpha 1 vs Canon R5, I would think the real competition would be the Canon R1 when it comes out... the huge price differential and the fact that the Alpha 1 is Sony's best, while the R5 is priced more like a 5D Mark IV replacement, should indicate that the real match up is yet to come. The fact that the R5 does so well is the "shocking" result of the video. It looks like that when you compare a spot that is slightly "deeper" in the photo than the eyeball, look at the conjunctiva on both shots, it looks pretty much in the same sharpness. Actually the Canon shot looks ever so slightly blurred, perhaps it is simply the motion blur.

    Great video, thanks. Could you let us know whether the shutter covering the sensor of the A1 has cured the dust issues you have frequently complained of with your A7R4/3. Also, how does the R5 compare in this respect.

      my A9ii covers the sensor when off. It helps. I clean my sensor about every 6 months now, but I usually don't change in the field. If I did, I would turn off the sony, let the shutter close over it, then swap. It covers the sensor after about 5 seconds when you switch off. The A7R4 for whatever reason didn't update the software to do that. Just the A9ii.

    SHOCKING !! I’m sorry. You don’t put a teleconverter on a 600 mm lens to evaluate a camera.

    Aren't those 30fps only in compresed raw?
    Because if so, those extra 10frames are just kinda flex.

      Most pro sport photographers shoot in jpeg so for them the extra 10fps should be very helpful.
      With that said. I certainly would like to see a proper detailed comparison between compressed and uncompressed raw. I did it myself with my a7r4 and was hard pressed to see a difference in Capture One so I now always shoot at compressed to save space.

    I'm switching to Sony from Panasonic now and I'll get a7Siii for videos and a7Riv with 61MP for photos... I think thats the best setup for now and I'lll pay 6000$ for both of those cameras instead of 6500$ for a1 only.... What do you guys think?? Please correct me if I'm wrong... My first lenses will be 70-200, 16-35mm and some prime len 1.4 (probably 24 or 34mm) All G master. I know its 10K$ out of pocket but whats better I can get for 10K$ now?!

      You can’t ever say what’s better unless you know what’s your uses. But overall, I mean, that’s an overall killer setup for almost any use your gonna do. I would only recommend or add lenses to that kit depending on the shots you need.

      Congratulations! The Sony 16-35 F 2.8 GM is one of the finest zoom lenses I´ve ever used, you will enjoy it! The 70-200 F 2.8 GM is nice (some are better), I hope for the Sony 16mm F 1.8 GM for Milky Way and aurora photography 🤩

      Hard to say. Here’s the case for A1: Advantage of A1 is its speed. It has more powerful processing, which means it is also more future-proof. There’s lot more chance that autofocus will get continuously updated. A7Riv might get replaced with A7Rv soon and iv will stop getting updated. Also, with SDK being opened up, there’s more chance A1 will get some computational photography upgrades. The A1 sensor might have advantages when taking pics of Aurora Borealis and Astrophotography. Sports and wildlife should also favor A1. 8k video is probably useless and shouldn’t be a deciding factor, but A1’s oversampling 4K video might be of interest. The $500 difference is nothing once you factor in lenses. Hope it helps.

    Is there a place where I can download a samples of photos of animals taken with R5 with focal length of 600mm? Especially when an object is around 100-150m away? I find my photos little bit too soft even if the object isnt moving and fstop of around f9.
