Chelsea are hoping to trim down their squad and offload some of their high earners. This means players like Kai Havertz could be on their way out. Surprisingly Arsenal are one of the teams keen on bringing the German to North London.
Havertz is a versatile attacker, but hasn’t been great for Chelsea. So why do Arsenal want him?
JJ Bull explains.

He’s a bit like Thomas Muller, in a way. Havertz doesn’t really have a defined position, but is at his best when he’s effectively given a free role - which is how you’d describe Muller. The problem he’s had at Chelsea isn’t that he can’t score or anything like that, it’s that he’s been used the wrong way; effectively being forced to play a role that diminishes his best attributes.
Doesn't Muller work best with a target man CF? Arsenal don't have that with Jesus, Nketiah, or Balogun
LOL you've got jokes !!
Totally wrong mate ... to compare havertz to muller is criminal .. muller is 10 times the player havertz would ever become.. all that work off the ball for havertz means nothing when it comes to the simple chances simple passes he messus up the easy stuff . The best way to describe havertz having watched him play for 5 years is that he is simply great at finding space but can't do anything well beyond that. I would say exactly the same if he left for a non rival club , dont tell me you lot didn't slander this man for 3 years and called him one or the biggest flops in prem history.. the guy is a bundeliga player at best .. needs to much time and space on the ball to be effective like werner .. doesn't have the physicality to hold on the ball and gets bullied easily .. stop the revisionism you all said he was washed and crap .. but now he isn't? Guys the biggest flop in prem history in my opinion for the price involved and played so many games and can only remember him having maybe 5 great games the entire time . Football fans are so strange at times 😂
He’s not good, when at Chealsea everyone was clowning him. Now you Arsenal fans want to pretend like 3 years didn’t exist.
Its not a bit. He is literally the Mueller regeneration that came earlier than expected. Its why Bayern want him, its why Chelsea wanted him, its why everyone wants him
One man's trash is another man's treasure. Arsenal has stability and an identity, which gives Havertz a good foundation to revive his career
Are all Arseanl fans aspiring comedians?
@Antonio I'm not an Arsenal fan, I just use my brain. Do you think that all these Chelsea players are untalented? Or do you think they are victims of a club that has been dysfunctional for the last year and a half?
@@BoxOfOranges84 yeah it’s very difficult to assess how good Chelsea’s players are, because the set up there is just horrible, making everyone look bad.
@@BoxOfOranges84club being dysfunctional has how much to do with kai not being able to dribble, shoot, or stay onside??? u have 10 iq
@@Antonio-hb8rdlukaku, werner, ziyech, havertz, Mount, aubameyang, sterling, pulisic, etc it just can't be a coincidence all these player played bad in Chelsea while being excellent at their previous clubs
Clearly a very talented player. There is a reason why he's a German international, and scored in the Champions League final. The price will be interesting and I suppose that's how he'll be rated. But Arteta and Edu have been good in the transfer market, so we should trust them.
Thats why Germany had been knocked out of world cup?
Arteta has been good at getting the most out of his players, Edu has failed pretty much every window; missing out on primary targets and being unable to sell players for their true market value
Imo one of the most talented in the world, just has been misused and stuck in a team in turmoil so cannot be consistent. I feel like 60-70m for him would be a very good deal
@@TheJGTurtonwhy didn't he show that talent consistently under Tuchel? Tuchel is a better coach than Arteta and even he could barely get anything out of him consistently.
@@maumau6961 He did and didn't. He played well when given that free role (as part of the 2 10s) and was consistent when looking at only that, but he kept getting moved around so much his consistency was lacking when looking at all games. He's kind of like Pogba in that way, when used specifically he will be amazing but will not be the same level when not given freedom (not saying they're similar kinds of player or attitude, just what they need)
Key thing in my eyes is Havertz's height and aerial ability. Arsenal sometimes became a bit one-dimensional in their attack, and I often thought that having a tall Toney-type striker would be a great option. Obviously Toney is a more conventional striker but Havertz can still help provide that diversity up front.
Havertz isn’t good in the air he’s so timid
Toney would be a perfect addition to the current Arsenal squad.
@@OneNiftyBoiToney is the Nketiah arsenal need. Respectfully.
Havertz it’s garbage in the air
Yes he hardly scores goals (at Chelsea) but he consistently gets in goalscoring positions/situations and he has great hold up and link up playing abilities. He will cook at Arsenal, just like at Bayer Leverkusen.
I hope you are right.
Your beyond saving mate as a chelsea fan I hate to tell you having watched almost every game he has played that he often goes missing in the box when needed .. plays over hit passes when on the attack and gets bullied by defenders easily . If you want havertz to contribute anything meaningful to your team your going to need to somehow wrap your head around the fact your going to say wow he runs around a good bit but does not much else . If you actually watched chelsea games I would take your opinion more seriously but I know for a fact you don't watch chelsea games so I know your a waffler . Toxic positivity at its finest.
At Arsenal we have historically had players who get in good positions and don;'t finish well. Laca, Jesus, Nketiah (in the past Saka). As a number 8/10 I like him but 60m is overpriced
@@ZPSBestProfileName I would prefer it if Arsenal just gave Belogun a chance, and invested in other areas.
Copium
I think what Arteta values most in players is attitude and character. Just like Pep he looks for an exact profile to fit into the team. Havertz has shown nothing but complete willingness to play in uncomfortable position, And tried his best to adapt to what he was required to under every different Chelsea manager. Never seen him complain or have any drama that alot of players in his situation would have.
Also he’s never been toxic or had a problem with other teammates except lukaku but that was very one way with lukaku annoyed about his playing time
Perfectly said
Havertz redemption arc incoming?
That's the Arteta Special!
@@marcus-sky what did you say?
You hit the nail right on the head there. Mikel wants to play a box midfield (4-2-4 defensively) with four players in a line stopping the opposition playing out from the back just like City did last season. They had KDB and Haaland along side one another and then Grealish to the left of Haaland and Bernado to the right of KDB and then Rodri and Gundogan behind KDB and Haaland in case the ball movement defeats the first line. Mikel Arteta is adapting to what City's best formulas are to winning, he's not buying players to please us as Arsenal fans, the bigger picture is defeating Man City in a title race with tactics and a versatile squad (shout out John Stones).
lol he has neither to beat chelsea wether tactics nor the squad. man cant even win against sporting
@@internet_dudeArsenal fans are not worried, not one defeat defines a whole season. Arsenal were top of the league for 93% of the season, the players got that energy and understanding. Man City didn't win the Champions league final first time. But they won it as a treble. Chelsea are way off and I think they will implode again. Mudryk 100 million man 😂😂😂😂
@@jackwilliam2965 yh we should be happy with the 93% of the season trophy
@@internet_dude You are a bit slow in the head. What kind of people that compete are happy to come 2nd. There's no such thing as "double 10"

@@zoeysiddiqi1532😂 how we feeling, big man?
I’ll cry if Havertz goes to Arsenal but I’ll be happy if he succeeds
Unless Chelsea make a good use of him . His potential is getting wasted there . Better to find a club that are eager to play him the way he excel at or bring a CF and give him a free role .
Now ,this is a true football fan.👍🏻
@@da1315people forget how everyone wanted him before he went to Chelsea
same!! i rlly cried my eyes out!!
@@Cillian-wwweeeeYeah, that's because Chelsea is adept at ignoring their signings best attributes and forcing them into unsuitable roles, killing their potential and desirability. They try to operate with some semblance of Real Madrid's Galacticos strategy in paying big money for big names but whilst Madrid does it in order to fill gaps/ roles in the team they have already identified, Chelsea just buy them because they are highly sought after, not because they work for the team. Then they expect every one of them to become superstars 😂
Odegaard and Kai behind Jesus, Saka and Martinelli wide? All of them fluidly swapping positions and driving defenders mad? Rice behind them helping shut the back door... with Zinchenko and White either side and Saliba and Gabby out back?
Yeah, that sounds decent.
Cancelo would be a nice signing too if possible.
@@commentarytalk1446 nope we are leaking goals and should sign players like timber and lavia/caicedo
You'd need an all-action destroyer for that to work, and another CM to cover since in big games that midfield would be quickly exposed
Part of his problem at Chelsea is that the team simply have no creators apart from him. Most of the wingers they had are really finishers or are the sort that latches on to through balls, which meant Havertz took on a more build up role. Not making the comparison as a player, but is sort of like Messi became almost a full time creator with Mbappe and Neymar, as PSG lacked the linking man. In Leverkusen, he had the benefit of Volland often being the focal point of attack, and the more hectic nature of BuLi meant he had a lot of room to showcase his speed and skill.
I think with Havertz, his strength is that he can fulfill a lot of roles and he really can slot in next or as Odegaard and Jesus. The challenge for Arteta is probably giving him a consistent role; he was shunted around at Chelsea a bit until they put him as a CF, but that team just weren't functional. And also, back up for Saka. Arsenal last year simply lacked bodies, to have one guy who is can cover so many positions alone is hard, let alone someone who was a highly sought after talent.
If Liverpool hadn't bought Gakpo, do you think they would have been chasing Havertz? Seems like the perfect Firmino replacement.
Doesnt really matter if he cant finish, he has that imminent box presence that arsenal lacks sorely.
He can finish. He’s just devoid of confidence. Trust me. He’ll cook anywhere outside of Chelsea.
Arsenal were scoring goals for fun last season.
@@jt19933helsea is a graveyard for the young talent. I am not dissing at them as a rival fan but in recent years most of their singings with potential have bombed in PL consistent performance wise. I agree with you all he needs is a confidence.
Havertz is another Pepe 😂😂😂
I’m pretty sure we just had our highest ever goal-scoring season so I don’t think we lack ‘Box presence’
He's amazing off the ball, both in offensive and defensive situations. He improves Arsenal's press on Day 1. This is an amazing signing.
For 65 😅
If you say so 😂😂
@@Apman99you will know why we paid that money. He will play in Xhaka position. Last Xhaka played in more advanced role. This roles suits him best. Chelsea fans be ready to cry
@@Hey_Libs you do know he actually struggled to adapt in EPL Frank literally played him in CM and On the wing and 2 striker and Striker what more do you want for him to perform. He has the ideas to execute but he is too slow to that Because of the pace of EPL either way it's a win for Chelsea 😁
@@Apman99amazing for Chelsea, we’ll see how the season goes but could be well for the Arsenal
Arteta changed Xakha and gave him a role that we now see him thriving. Same with Kai Havertz I see him play better for Germany then he does for Chelsea.. At Chelsea it seems they are all trying but it doesn't compliment each other's play.
Brilliant breakdown and tactical analysis. Thank you.
Chelsea shouldn't let him go. They've got a manager who got Dele Alli to score goals from the same position. They have a similar build, similar attributes, it could actually work this time
nah, Chelsea have a bloated squad, Havertz hasn't worked, makes perfect sense to sell him. They have a load of other players who can succeed where he failed now
@@maciejbala477 and we already have nkunku. You can't have two players with similar profile
Nkunku coming means less minutes
I agree that comparison could have some merit, but Nkunku is probably going to play in that position. I still think we need another striker even of we sign Jackson. We can't afford to put all our eggs in one basket.
@@ababiogodfred4307and they just signed Nkunku who has a similar profile.
You always see him with a lot of energy and trying to do things more dynamically when he plays for Germany which is why it's always so shocking when he's wasted at Chelsea
I think as Chelsea fans, we can admit he is talented and the it never quite worked out with us. But also we don't know what Arsenal want him for. Their system and coach might be what he needs to move to the next level. I am speculating here I know, only if they get him and we get to see how he is used and plays, will we be proven right or wrong (which is subjective). I wish him luck and hope we as Chelsea improve on that position.
Arteta will improve him just like he is improving Odegaard

@@tlovehaterno. when he is on loan at arsenal did you know him? hahahah😂. he is considee flop and real madrid sell him to arsenal cheaper 3x than rice. look at how good coaching and tactic turn odegaard into. good luck to Kai
He is very versatile thats one thing, but he is also very good tight spaces, making ghost runs, and anything in the box really. Since Arsenal play teams in a low block, his skillset would be usefull,
he used to be a player like Odegaard, very highly rated early so if anyone can make him good, its Arteta.
Thanks for the video, was waiting for one
This channel is SO good.
I said a week ago he was a Xhaka replacement and the internet flamed me.
Same. As soon as this rumour appeared alongside Arsenal allegedly dropping out of the Caicedo race, my thought was that Havertz would be first choice in that Xhaka role instead of Rice. Just makes perfect sense to me. His versatility also has the added bonus of being a rotation option for the Odegaard and Saka roles, and also as maybe a third choice in the Jesus role.
I don't know why people are so stuck in the mindset that Arteta wants Havertz to be our main striker and therefore cry about his goalscoring record at Chelsea.
@@kazielbonn 100%. It’s all about options for Arteta. And we clearly suffered from low block Dyche Ball tactics from other teams. Havertz can get through the lines. And rotating players is going to be important. Xhaka score 40% of his total arsenal goals in his last season!
100 percent he will play there
@@kazielbonn how does it make perfect sense? he doesn't nearly have xhaka workrate or defensive ability.
@@zoeysiddiqi1532 I know, Havertz hasn't played as an 8 in years and he requires defensive solidity/ to play in a double pivot with an all action CM, neither of which Arsenal provide right now. He will almost certainly play/provide cover in attacking areas, not midfield
Havertz is coming in to replace xhaka. I think he can do everything that xhaka can do, but with a bit more silk and flair. Can see mikel turning him into an 8

Havertz to Arsenal is one of the most interesting transfers I've seen in a while.
He went to Chelsea with a lot of hype, but really never flourished there. If Arteta manages to get him play to his strengths and flourishes, it will be a great achievement for him as a coach.
Neither did KDB at Chelsea. Some say he has near KDB quality in his own role (free roaming). I'm not fully sold. I saw flashes of quality in Kai Bundesliga but not combined with the calendar long consistency of a KDB.
I’m a Chelsea supporter and I consider Havertz to be one of our best players, not to mention his ceiling is way higher than the level he’s at, Arsenal are going to get one hell of a player and I bet he’ll end up with close to 20 goal contributions next season if they do get him
I dont think Arteta is buying Havertz for goals
@@TheMaestromMephisto no he’s more for the pressing and build up play/movement off the ball. But something tells me he’ll get like 6 goals 14 assists or something and that’s his 20 contributions right there

Didnt think there was any explanation why anyone would pay real money for Havertz so credit to you sir
Smart buy.. kudos, Arteta.. I always loved Kai🎉
outstanding analysis, as always.
i hope this move will finally unlock all of Havertz' potential. i would love for him to break through his ceiling just in time for the next big international tournament. germany could really use him stepping up as the leader of the next generation. this arsenal squad has some real creativity and change-of-pace with havertz and Odegaard running the midfield. and the newly announced rice signing brings even a different dimension to their midfield. arsenal are going to be very dangerous this year!
Very good analysis of the player and of team style
Please make a video on how and why the 3-2-4-1 formation works
FINALLY IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO
Scoring one goyal in a UCL final doesn't make him a ' Big Game player'.
Just like not playing great in a Ucl final one, doesn't make Henry a ' Not a big game player'.
I like the addition of the themed football kits!
Havertz is probably being seen as a direct replacement for Xhaka, being left footed, decent height, great passer, ghosts into the box to finish. However he is still more of a 10 than a 8, so still need some tweaks in the defensive side to make the formation work.
You guys always do such a clear, accurate and relatively emotion free take on teams, tactics and players, bloody legends, keep it up lads.
Excellent and informative analysis!
This gives me more confidence in this signing. There's been some outrage against Arteta for wanting Kai Havertz, but I always knew Arteta saw potential a lot of us fans didn't see. And I hope that signing him will age well in the future.

People forget he was considered a world top talent when he joined Chelsea, he didnt all over sudden become crap at Chelsea, Arteta will know how to use him perfectly!
Nice explanation mate!! ❤
Putting such a clever player in that level of instability then taking him to a stable club like arsenal is a recipe for disaster for other pl teams. Mentally he is top, he is prem ready, and sure thing he is greater than any cfc player I have ever seen. Arteta won big time.
Mount when for less and I think is the better player so its not a full mid he want in Kai but hes also not a solo striker. I havent a clue where he fits into this team other than a replacement for Ode
Ødegaard is great with the ball, but not so much off the ball which makes Havertz a great addition to that system to put pressure off Ødegaard. Ødegaard always was better when others did the defensive work for him.
Subbed - loved this video.
thanks as an arsenal fan i feel alot better now
Good analysis.
brilliant explainer. youve convinced me as a gooner :D
1:07 “Good finishing” 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's not who I would have gone for but Mikel is very gifted and I've always trusted his judgement so this will probably be a good signing
Cracked me up at between 9.5
Havertz is also very good and experienced as a winger. They put him on the wing as a child because he is actually very quick. You just don't see him sprinting in Chelsea, but Havertz is very explosive. The only player that has similar versatility is Nkunku. I wonder why would Chelsea swap one for the other.
hes not good as a winger at all, he always played as a 10 or RM inverting into midfield in Leverkusek
Nkunku is much more refined than Havertz in all honesty, and Havertz is only fast over long distances
Very exciting transfer, so much untapped potential to unlock
He's been in the league 3 years. He cost £65m.
Untapped potential? Are you sure?
Yeah I’m sure. Get off the guys back. And give him time to find his feet in a new club. Just circling like a vulture
dynamic duo 8 odegaard and havetz, similiar with silva and bruyne in city
I think he'd be best in Odegaards role. Odegaard scored 15 goals this year. Havertz could put up those numbers if he's not the center forward being marked by center backs. If he's hovering outside the box and can use one touch to create space for a shot, he's technical enough to do that.
Lmao Odegaard’s value is not his goals mate. Havertz can’t replace him 😂
@@ariassingh462 Seeing as Odegaard was our joint top goal scorer last season, I'd say his goals are pretty important.
He’s a proper 20 goals a season Second striker if deployed well, I’m sure he’ll flourish under a genius coach like Arteta
Amazing analysis. I think this will be a very good signing for the Gunners.
the 3-2-2-3 on offense would work wonders with Rice in Partey´s place. Everybody but Martinelli works their asses off outta possession.
Ahhahah, that Havertz in the box graphic killed me!
Nice, very accurate and made me feel very confident of signing Havertz
I can see how he could possibly fit in this system but I would think that what Arsenal lack the most right now is a ruthless finisher. Jesus and Saka, although great, don't have that ruthlessness. I believe Martinelli does.
I don't see why Havertz would be a better option than say Vlahovic who might be available for a similar price.
Havertz will unlock Jesus
Lot's of people think he'll play number 8 in place or Xhaka.
I don't get it. I have Willian vibes. But I wasn't keen on Ramsdale and have learned to withhold my judgement since and our transfer strategy has been 🔥 recently
Arteta doesn’t value hard positions but the ability to be fluid during any game state. Xhaka made a ton of runs into the box from his position and that’s what arteta would like from havertz. Havertz will most likely roam around the pitch to create overloads or make a run into the box which will create a new dynamic. We played our best football when our forwards had complete fluidity which allows us to adapt to whatever teams are doing. Low block, high press, double teaming saka and martinelli. I genuinely think people underestimate what a good environment like arsenal will do to a player. Arteta’s talent ID is elite do we must trust him on this. He can also rotate Jesus and either directly or indirectly saka by shifting Jesus over to the wing and saka gets to have a rest for a game. He fills a lot of roles and helps with depth too.
Sad it didn't work out at Chelsea
Catalyst is the word to describe Kai
I celebrated as soon as JJ drew the box midfield. Man knows what he's talking about and it just makes sense.
If you saw played a very young Toni Kroos back when he still was in the german league that’s what Kai really is, he plays better coming from behind in the middle of the field , Kroos was so instrumental for Germany winning that World Cup for them prior to transferring to Real Madrid where he became a real legend, that’s the type of player Kai eventually will be, it’s truly a shame Chelsea is letting him go because they don’t have a player that smart in the midfield, best wishes to Kai and I’ll rooting for him in the german squad, big lost for Chelsea, Pochettino should have at least try to stay with him for this season, Kai is a thinker not just a player
I’m so excited for this. Harvertz gonna change us
since zinchenko always inverts havertz will probably go much higher and rice(if they sign him) will anchor the midfield
Brilliant video
Great video.
he is like a Thomas Muller,Delle Alli type of player THE RAUMDATTER(space interpreter)
I like the age chart. How indicative is it to teams success?
You are right; Kai will certainly thrive under Arteta, helping Arsenal to solidify their usually fluid attacking play.
Finally someone made sense of this signing lol cheers bro
2:29 UCL final was 20-21 season
Great signing for depth but we really need more. We better get atleast 2 def mid and 2 def. Maybe add one more young clinical striker to the team or Eddie should play huge role next season. Huge risk for me
I think he might play mainly as a left 8. But incase of no jesus / saka i can see him provide cover at CF & RW.
Great analysis tho.
at leverkusen they played with 3 false 9,brandt,havertz and volland, all 3 of them rotate position all the time, that’s why when he move to chelsea and all these managers played him as a striker it’s baffle me
Havertz is Muller but with a left foot ,I don't want them as half 8s
Nice analysis, now it makes sense why Arteta wants him.
he seems like the ideal impact sub type player if he's willing to play that role
In this video I also now immediately get why Arsenal also want Jurriën Timber! Timber is a defender who is a very sensible build-up player of a remarkable young age. Timber and Arsenal could thrive extremely well if he would play right back.
I really asked myself why he would want to sign Havertz, now after watching this video, it makes complete sense. Great explanation and great video as always. Thanks :)
Where did you get a chart like that for his player statistics at 1:48? Does anyone else know?
Can't help but notice the Bergkamp kit is an oddity there
So we'll have 3 strikers that can't finish..? Great
From the vid I am thinking that Havertz performs the Raumdeuter role like if he finishes then he could be like Muller
The goal in the Champions League final was 2020/2021 season
