Orange Micro Dark: 20W Hybrid Amp
Vložit
- čas přidán 19. 06. 2016
- Orange Micro Dark is a tiny 20W amp head, capable of some huge rock and metal sounds. Earth shakingly loud, it is more than capable of holding its own at small gigs and the buffered FX loop means it will take all of your effects without question.

Is that a Steve Vai signature model fan you've got blowing your hair?
😄😄😄
hyper clever comment lmao
I'm pretty sure every time he turned the gain up he turned the velocity on his fan up.....
No way dude!!! Thats his rippin' picks he's jammin'!!!
Mines really fuzzy too. Needs a boost
I really liked the fact that you tested it in different cabinets, expensive and cheap ones!
Reviews should of course try to get an amazing tones, but it's important to show how people in a low budget may experience the product.
I also should add - the 1x8 cabinet sounds great for its size, but this thing sounds waaaay better through a 4x12 (obviously).
Do u think it can work well when playing with a drummer?
@@aegisreflector1239 it can keep up but you have to have it pretty loud. Either way it’s great to have
I use it for bedroom practice. Doesnt the 112 get a bit loud?
Considering buying this. what hair products should I pair it with for that ultimate rock star vibe?
Garnier Fructis all the way.
+iain schmaloer there is so much more in the range than just shampoo

We need a video about this.

Funnily enough, more than for the distortion, this little amp is best known to get you some quite awesome clean sounds.
This amp is actually my main gigging rig. I have pedals in the front end and in the FX Loops and like you said, takes pedals really well. I did swap out the stock 12ax7(ECC83) and put in a JJ Gold Pin 12AU7 for more clean headroom. It sounds pretty freaking awesome, and I get compliments from other musicians after shows on the regular. Usually set up on stage with a 2x10 Panama Cabinet, with use of the cab sim into a board and the cab mic’d up (depending on the stage setup, it varies). It’s fun surprising folks with the size and tone this thing pumps out. I use a vox type pre-amp pedal in the FX loop sometimes depending on the gig. Only real gripe for me is the cab sim, which can get fizzy. It’s totally usable but kind of wish it was a little better. But for the price, and what you get, this amp is super difficult to beat.
Couldn’t you also add something in the cab sim chain to fix it? Or, if not, just use the FX Loop send and put an amp-in-a-box or an IR in that signal path
@@maxwilson7001 best fix I found was putting a Hughes and Kettner red box between the cab and amp head. It’s old school but beats the pants out of the amps cab sim
Love mine! It sells itself as a metal amp, but It's SUPER versatile, and I almost always use the clean tones since my band writes chill indie/bedroom pop, but when I'm dickin' around with metal or shoegaze riffs, cranking that gain knob does so much. If I'm trying to practice quietly or recording tunes, it sounds solid through the headphone jack. If you're trying to branch into getting amp heads and have a low budget or want a cheap, reliable back up amp, this is a quality amp.
I love the sounds that were coming out of those rigs. Even the smaller cab speaker wasn't bad. Loved it when you cranked up the gain and added a tube screamer. Now that's keeping it loud!
Did you specially put the fan behind the camera to make your hair even more fabolous?
actually you gotta do this everywhere you can, it also makes practice more efficient :D
+Bottie haha i set a fan right in front of me in the laudry room i practice in it helps keeps u nice and cool so i not dripping sweat on my guitar
+daniel johnston im*
+daniel johnston i Do that too. and it makes your hair epic....
you need aerodynamic when playing
Probably the best review of this product that I've seen. Also great playing, very musical and pleasant as opposed to just shredding and chugging if been seeing. Thank you for posting!
Sounds really good!
I like that particular piece of ebony on that guitar. Beautiful streak. Also, I'm glad you didn't get your hair cut too short! 😊👍🏻🎸
Colin your videos are going up and up in quality! Really enjoying them mate
I wish I'd gotten this as my first amp, I really love this with the matching 1x8 as my living room rig it's lush sounding and juicy, if you add a reverb pedal and set the shape just so you can have a deluxe vibe
One of my favourite CZcams channels, great review keep it up!!
I've owned this amp for a little over a year now and even tho iwasn't too happy due to my utter inability to dial in a decent tone, this video gave me some tones (and riffs) to make it sound the way ot deserves to sound, so thanks for that!
I have both micros and you made a great job of showing off the MD.Its a wee beast, great chops Colin.
Another great video, especially the cab comparison!
That was a very good Dragons' Heart cameo you did there. Thank you for reminding me that I really need to get more. I only have the one, but it is the only plectrum I use anymore.
I have one of these and this amp simply put kicks ass. Its amazing the tones you can get. Blues? Thrash metal? Whatever you want it does it all.
I think this is the video that sold me on buying mine, though I did go for the 1x8 cab since I couldn't find an affordable 1x12 at my local shop. But hey, that's easy enough to upgrade. Have to say, though, you made the thing sound amazing through your 2x12!
1st off i love the drone shirt and 2nd this was a kick as review! thanks for posting!
I love this channel, you deserve all the subscribers!
Just copped one of these on FB Marketplace. Already a fan and haven’t turned it up past halfway yet. Sounds very good.
Your playing is phenomenal, great review, I'd watch a video of you just playing, keep up the good work
I'm going to buy a fan, and the amp. Awesome review
CSGuitar Colin I really wish you were more popular as a youtuber you make the best advice videos and comparisons videos ever keep going with everything you are doing good job
I just watched Rob Chapman's review on this amp head. It's kind of a coincidence that you're wearing a Dorje shirt after I just got done watching Chappers
Bought the amp a few months ago, couldn't be happier about the tone!
It’s my first amp And a great one too I’m getting the 4x12 for it soon and currently I have a fender reverb going through the back and I think it sounds spectacular
I got this little head a couple months ago and it is fantastic. I was really surprised at how freaking loud it gets. If I turn on ALL THE GAIN, having the volume at just 3 is crazy loud in a small room. I have it running through a 4/12 Laney cab.
My compact amp is the ENGL Ironball. 2 CH, 1/5/20 Watts, footswitch (mid) boost/channel/reverb/poweramp boost. Full tube amp, full shared EQ with presence. Running it into their 1x10 at home, ditto looper in the FX loop. Loving it.
Yes, the Ironball is a winner ! Super versatile amp, more than loud enough for home practice/recording or small gigs. Power scaling, great idea. They're not inexpensive, though. I consider myself pretty lucky scoring a good deal on a used Engl Screamer 50 head with the Z-5 footswitch. It rips !
this amp sounds good and loud with a 4x12 cab!
You are such a hoot to listen to I don’t even care that Google translate couldn’t turn this into English. Thanks for trying it out with different cabs. That really helps us to determine what it will do. Cheers
Watched this, bought the amp, LOVE IT (but paired with a Laney 2x12)! For the tony size it is one of the best amps I have heard. In the 'home' range it beats Marshall and Blackstar alternatives into the dirt!
Dude yess on the tube screamer. I do the same with my cr120.
can this little guy really gig and sound awesome?
i always liked orange's micro heads, they're awesome!
See my comment from a few months ago. The micro dark is my main gigging amp. I use it with a 2x10 cab and with a full peadalboard rig. I play large shows/gigs and worship at my church with this amp. It's the real deal.
What a coincidence! I am a subscriber of your's and i been looking at this amp (looking to build my own combo, thinking if i get this i will probably take it apart to get the handle off) and i never heard a good demo on the thing. You review equipment well so i'm sure this'll be a good one for me.
I have one of these and I love it. It doesn't quite have the bite for metal attack picking, but I put a Joyo Husky drive with the gain about 9:00 or a little less and I get the bite from that.
these reviews are mad! cheers!
I wanna start a band with this dude, same exact playing style as me. Awesome video and holy shit with that tube screamer! That's the best metal tone I've heard in a while
Hot dang, that fizz at max gain! You're right about the loose bottom end, I had to get a TS-9 for my Rockerverb just to make it playable with high gain! Fantastic little amp though, thoroughly impressed Colin. That tiny cab blows though hah!
I use a pair of Orange Micro Terrors and they are plenty loud. I use a stereo 4x12 and have used it with 1x12 cabs and ran it with a Musicman HD150 before I had the 2nd Orange Micro Terror. I have also, used it with a Electro Harmonix 44 magnum.
I love the video quality! Sounds like you got a new mic or something. Either way, i loved the video Collin!
I got one yesterday and i must say with my 4x12 it's loud and sounds great and my friend got on the drums and it has perfect volume
Hi Colin, Excellent Demo of this Little Monster👍👍👍.
Take care mate.
Melbourne, Australia.
its a breath of fresh air seeing a fellow scotsman with such a good channel.
You in how to not dial in a metal tone: *turns up all the gain*
You getting a good metal tone out of this amp: *ALL THE GAIN*
Dude! That Tube Screamer!!! I wasn't excited by the sound at all, then you added the Tube Screamer!!! Hell yes!!!
Thanks for the review
I use my MD w/ a 2x12 for practice to save time on my 6505+. My live rig is at my 1st bands practice space, and my side project practices closer to home. Getting a little setup for this has been fun
I had to revisit this video as it convinced me to buy the amp. Thanks again. Great little amp. I got a used orange 1x15 and put a kappa pro in it. Oh Hell!
Bass too.
Loved the review btw
Excellent Demo....Thanks
i lost it @ 3:57 Lol
you rock, Man. will be putting this little beauty on my wishlist.
Sounds great! Comparison with 6505mh would be great :D Im considering these amps and I heard many good about both of them
Also heard some Adam Jones (Tool) style riffs in there.
Great sound! And nice channel.
Love the new logo Collin!
I got the amp sounds great real tone warm and rich.run it through a 4×12 cab. Sounds better than the head that came with the cab mg100hdfx
I like posters behind you. You definitely have a good taste)
Little did I know that my practice amp purchase tonight would be thanks to Strathy Colin! Nice to see you’re doing well after 14 years, guess I’ll need to sub now 🤣
Recently bought this after seeing your review of it. Got it running through the 12 inch speaker on my old Line 6 Spider 3 75 watt combo amp after cutting the speaker wire running from the amp head to speaker and then soldering some mono jacks to the ends. Was a nice upgrade from the spider amp.
Spiders are the worrrrst. Especially when they explode into full volume when you change channels
dude i did the same with a fender combo amp I love it. i want to buy like a tube screamer and get a good metal tone
Sounded great through the bigger cab, the small speaker & cab sounded weak to me though.
Great video again Colin.
Well you sold this to me, awesome video!
I like the little Orange heads, I use a Laney IRT112 and a Hotone 5w head. Thing that puts me off about this head is that it doesn't have individual bass, middle & treble controls
The orange micro series ist the Best beginner amp lineup ever, especially in the packs with that cab which is enough for practice
I have the Micro Terror and love it,but when I heard about this,I HAD to have it too.I do use a lot of pedals so the fx loop was a major draw.Just a tip I'd like to share,I swapped the supplied JJ valve out for a Groove Tubes.Really brings out the character of the head.
I love, LOVE the dark terror series of amps!
Love this review, so we'll done. Love to see you review the EHX 44 magnum power amp pedal mate :-)
Love it! i wanna buy that amp with a 2 x 12 cab now!
Loving the Dorje shirt there!!
Great video, brother. Thanks for taking time to put it through multiple cabinets. Some of those riffs kind of remind me vaguely of Wolfcry or At Vance. Ever listen?
I want a guitar like that! That looks awesome
Colin, when are the "ALL THE GAIN!" shirts, hoodies and accessories coming in????
Also, nice review.
nice job on this !! :)
I can think of a reason for not getting one of these - the Mooer Little Monster AC. Maybe not as feature rich as the Micro Dark, but far more tonally versatile and (more importantly) uses EL84 power tubes rather than solid state. I've paired the Little Monster AC and the Little Monster BM with the Fender Superchamp 1 X 12" cabs for a live set up much like the one you described and it's a beast :)
I own one and legit gig with it every weekend. I have it on my board with my pedals and run it through a 1x12 cab (Harley Benton Vintage cab with V30) while also running through the PA with the cab sim. I too replaced the tube with a 50’s RCA NOS 12ax7 and hot damn does this rig sound fantastic!
Another great review & how I love the slow motion hair blowing in the breeze, very Beyoncé😂
I have been looking at this amp for a while as a set out of the bedroom into band practice. You have made my mind for me. Would love to see a comparison of the "new" tube and the stock.
Dude, the top on that Explorer-ish guitar is gorgeous.
I have to say this amp sounds phenomenal. It'd be a steal if it were double the price but the fact that it's so cheap is really tempting me to get one. Another good use for it could be as a backup amp for gigging which let's face it if you're using a valve amp and running it hot, is going to be something you need.
i absolutely love this little amp, after A/B against a peavey 6505 (similar form factor and price)
You are the best channel in the world of youtube bro!
Love these amps
The Orange cab is trve kvlt sounding
Love this amp with a TS9 and Rowin noise gate through peavey 1x12 havent missed reverb one bit - 5751 tube bring it more in tune with marshall but sovtek and electorharmonix both sounded stellar as well - cleans are amazing too-debating on EQ pedal in loop but i think the screamer is enough to chop bass and add upper mids - Was scared of orange because of fuzziness but tube screamer tames it into magnificence - BRILLIANT amp for the price- possible orange convert here ! ha!
I have this amp and completely recomend it! I use a 2x12 with Celestion V30's, its totally giggable and portable, no more pain in the back (that's what she said)
Colin, every time you mentioned the word, "scooped," you seemed to be dying inside. Don't try to act happy and positive about it, we all know you hate scooped mids...
I see you named yourself after A Pale Horse Named Death. Even went and put one of their album covers as your profile pic. And you thougt no one would notice. ;)
Its pretty funny how Colin's accent scoops the 'o' out of scooped.
All the gain, Slayer....
Colin, this is pretty the best demo I've heard from this amp. Killer tone. Love the guitar too.
Speaking of a cool Stereo-Rig, I play my pedals board with two distinct routes (A-B-Switch) into a Micro Dark and a Micro Terror, then both into half a 2x12" cab. Allows for quite versatile sound (OD into Micro Dark, Fuzz into Micro Terror, or both with their own Drive, ...) I'd reccomend such a setup...
My jaw hit the floor after plugging my Micro Dark into a Marshall 412... Things a beast...
That Explorer type guitar is looking pretty hoss!
This amp with EQ in the loop, joyo extreme metal pedal and boss SD 1.WOW.
dat Basket case intro ^^ loved it
Nice tone
Sounds killer dude. I want to get one as a house bed room amp.
Did you?
12:49 You could also run the Send from the Micro Dark into the Receive of another amp, say one with power-stage valves, right? Could be a cheap way to add modern metal capabilities to an old-school blues/classic-rock amp, like Fendery amps or even an AC15C1.
this reminds me of an old GK micro lead 100watt that was an 80's piercingly harsh MONSTER!
Please do a video followup if you swap the tube!! :D Cheers!
