Doves are the the quintessentially british understated band yet rich in subtle vocals and instrumental smorgasbord of sounds = simply simple yet complex .

This is a magnificent tune from a criminally underrated band. I have no problem whatsoever with Jimi's voice. There's a beautiful bass part to this song and the percussion is the icing on the cake. Their version of this on Jools Holland's Later is essential viewing. Great pick.

Doves cam out of the Rave scene in Manchester. there were orinially called SubSub and had a big UK dance hit with If There Aint No Love back in the 90s.

One of my top five bands. Serious rabbit hole for you to go down with this great great manc band. The vocals will grow on you. Jimmy's solo album is great too

Personal favourite is Here it Comes, quite a different sound, a very Manchester song if there's such a thing and shared vocals with the drummer. Kingdom of Rust is a superb testimony to the singer's father, a really emotional song whilst Lifelines is more uplifting. I'd also recommend Cycle of Hurt or Carousels from the latest album.

This is one of those bands that I can’t remember how I originally got into. I think maybe it was after the Mercury Prize nomination, back when I was reading Mojo every time I could find it. Still love these guys

When you have a couple of hours, put on the 5 cd set. Then add the latest Universal Want and the bros. Williams' brilliant Black Rivers. All their albums are genius but Black Rivers is spectacular.

Just checked out black river ( never heard of this album ) listened a couple of times - first impression pretty good- thanks for the recommendation- similar to doves but a little more angst and less subtle tones - so far so good, 👍👌🏾.

I really enjoyed the uplifting nature and tonal quality of this song, as well as all the auxiliary percussions used.

I've always thought of this song as almost a sister piece to The Stone Roses' Waterfall, lyricly its almost the same subject matter, rythmicly its the same and it has that simple but beautiful guitar line just like Waterfall. I love this track, like the album it came from but i'm with you, his voice makes it hard for me to enjoy a full album in one sitting, i love when they come on when i have my playlist on random but i never listen to a full album.
Manchester, band after band, tune after tune, what a city for producing musicians, i love it. (and i'm from Glasgow)
    Nice reaction 👍

I've enjoyed Doves for over 20 years, their first few albums were connected by this production that gave a great sense of space, almost Moody Blues-like but with a different band in the middle. Your complaint about the vocal is valid, he doesn't get super dynamic with his voice very much and the songs would benefit from a little more of that sometimes. He does more with his voice on the Some Cities and Kingdom of Rust albums but I think I prefer the music and songs from Lost Souls, The Last Broadcast, and the Lost Sides compilation; they're very unique sonic spaces and that's why people are still Doves fans all these years later! I recommend trying _Snowden_ based on what you've said in this and other reactions 🙂

A really under appreciated band all four albums are good, not really listened to the fifth that they recorded a year or two ago. A few personal favourites of mine by Doves are Here it comes, Kingdom of rust, Sea song and Darker which was the b side to sea song

The last album is just as good as the other four so give it a try.

This was the first single from the second album, one track CD single deleted almost immediately. Got to number 2 in the British charts in 2002. They originally came out as a dance group called Sub Sub who had a big hit in the UK with Ain’t No Love. They were also producers and their recording studio burned down. I saw them support Oasis in 2000 they were all switching instruments on different songs, but as they were first on the bill the sound was awful. The part at the very end is Brazilian Carnivale.

Great band, prefer the 1st album Lost Souls to anything they did afterwards, but still great discography. The Cedar Room is my personal favourite but this is a top tune, good choice Ian 👌🏻
