This version of RES is the Seaside one, so 1983/4ish - the video comes from the Seaside Treats VHS that came out then. The 1988 version is much more bombastic, much more the production of A Little Man &c. - I love this song, as a sidenote, Tim toying with the fact that he could perfectly well write something normal with that solo in there but he wouldn't. Per "that's the way we all go", that's both R.E.S. and A Little Man and a House.
Been loving your Cardiacs journey too, your comments on being initially frosty to Tarred certainly is nothing to be ashamed of - it's a tough entry and the fanbase is a lovely one that fully understands people not getting it. Cardiacs are certainly a band who reward repeat listen over love at first sight, who are more likely than most to click.
For a next Cardiacs song, that's always a tough one, I'm gonna say Goodbye Grace, a real fun fast one off Heaven Born and Ever Bright that I think they never played live because of how complex it was.

Ok maybe a little late but, the quote "that's the way we all go" is in "A little man and the house" song. A song to react/review could be "Buds and Spawn" . I'm glad you discovered this great band, bye!

I found your channel through your earlier Cardiacs vids; I never heard of Cardiacs until I heard this version of R.E.S. on Steven Wilson's great post-punk compilation, 'Intrigue'... That's all I needed to hear - into the Pond I leapt and now I've got loads of Cardiacs LP's, CD's, DVD's, and t-shirts! I'm sorry I never knew about Tim and his musical artistry when he was still with us, though. I'd also highly recommend Tim Smith's Extra Special OceanLandWorld, which sounds like an excellent Cardiacs album with everything played by Tim.

A great guitar solo indeed. You should check out "Distant Buzzing" by the Keyboardist, William Drake

People found Tim’s music through so many different channels and his work covers so many different genres. I saw when I was 16 years old and even now at the age of 50… nothing compares.

Great reaction to a great song. This is the 1983 version from The Seaside. The video is from the Seaside Treats VHS, which also has music videos for "A Little Man and a House," "To Go Off and Things," and a surreal comedy video called "The Consultant's Flower Garden."
You are definitely not running out of Cardiacs. Some bands have a handful of brilliant songs that are worth hearing, but Cardiacs have dozens and dozens. Here's a bunch of ideas:
"A Balloon for Bertie's Party" (live version from The Special Garage Concerts) is a song Tim wrote when he was a teenager.
"The Whole World Window" is one of Cardiacs' most emotional songs.
"The Duck and Roger the Horse" is absolutely manic. I'd recommend the live video version from Mares Nest.
"Buds and Spawn" is one of their most well-loved.
"The Alphabet Business Concern (Home of Fadeless Splendour)" feels like a national anthem, and was almost treated as one at their gigs.
"No Bright Side" is a b-side that is as immense as all of their other songs. I recommend drewszabo's fan video.
"Dog-Like Sparky," "Bellyeye," and "Nurses Whispering Verses" are some of the most well-loved songs from Sing to God that you missed.
"Will Bleed Amen" is the high-energy closer from the last Cardiacs album to be released, Guns.
"Vermin Mangle" is a single that was released posthumously, shortly following Tim's passing. It was intended for what would have been Cardiacs' 2008 album LSD. It's absolutely crushing.

I certainly didn't get Cardiacs the first time I heard them. In fact, it took me about 20 years to listen to them again, but they then fast became my favourite rock band.

It's been great to see your Cardiacs journey, and I'm always happy to see people embrace their music as they go along the journey!
RES is probably one of my favourites of theirs, the nonchalantness of Tim's guitar solo in the song never fails to put a smile on my face in the context of how out there this song in particular is.
The 1988 version unfortunately doesn't have the lovely outro bit, which in my opinion is a necessary part of the song, this was definitely the best version to check out!
As for the bass line, I've been slowly learning it myself, it's an absolute blast to play!
Regarding running out of songs, I don't think that's really an issue for the foreseeable future, as there's just so much good stuff of theirs out there.
One that might fun to listen to is Visiting Hours, a song that Tim wrote at a relatively young age, and it's surprisingly complex. There's a version from the Tales of the Rotten Shed dvd that has a bunch of their stage antics with them bickering over seemingly nothing; alternatively there's the version from The Special Garage Concerts which is a bit more of cleaner version.

Love hearing you talk Cardiacs! I think most people, including fans, didn't get them on first listen (and you definitely "got" Dirty Boy quicker than I did) so there's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Tarred and Feathered is a challenging first listen, but definitely makes for a memorable first impression!
You're definitely not running out of songs. For Tim Smith songs that are pretty different from what you've already listened to, I'd recommend checking out "Jitterbug", "Fanny" (From a side project called Tim Smith's Spratleys), "Come Back Clammy Lammy", "Snakes-A-Sleepin", "Swimming with the Snake", "Gina Lollabridgida", "Nurses Whispering Verses (STG version)", "Helen and Heaven", "Bellyeye", "Insect Hoofs On Lassie", "Stoneage Dinosaurs", and well, you know, everything else.

Always a pleasure to listen to this track and great to hear you back with Cardiacs. The main keyboard riff of RES is borrowed from 'The Art of Being Polite' by The Residents from their 'Commercial Album' (hence the title). It would be good to hear some Residents on here too. All the tracks on 'Commercial Album' are one minute long and the band paid a radio station to run the songs as ads! It is an eerie and blackly humorous record. You coukd run three or four of them together.

I love the respect that you give to Tim and Cardiac fans. Thank you so much. You mentioned "Is this the life?", which is wonderful, and I cant listen to "The whole world window" from the rude bootleg without crying with joy and pain. Same for the whole of the amazing maresnest gig. What a gig that was. Cardiacs were the best live band ever, so its good to listen to their live recordings. Mares Nest gig was them at their best, so try and catch it if you can. My god, Sarah makes me so happy every time I watch it. Love your content, thank you

You might also want to visit the CZcams channel 'Not ABC' - this is all Cardiacs, and there are scrolling lyric videos available for just about every one of their songs so it's easy to listen and read at the same time, and you can really see how he puts the words and the rhythms together; the words need the rhythms.

How about 'The Breakfast Line' as next song? Surreal lyrics, ska and an immensely heavy, majestic guitar-led outro.

Oh and as far as the next song to review (I change my mind daily on this) at present I am having a 'Hope Day' and 'Icing on the World' period, mind, as you referred to a 'straight' guitar solo, you could go for their only top 100 'hit' and probably most peoples entry point "Is This The Life" after which about 20% of newbies may linger on with the rest running screaming for the nearest cave!
