Studio recording, Moscow, 1956 - Hudba
Thanks Incontrario Motu for this historic recording of the BIG TRIO: Gilels, his brother in law Kogan and Rostropovich playing the "archduke". The trio reaches the musical density of a quartet, the cello lends width and shadow, the piano has the complexity of the full orchestra. And of course the three musicians were among the very best in their respective instruments. Quality of sound is excellent. There is something magical in Russian musicians, a suffering and loving soul.
I didn't know Kogan was brother in law to Gilels.
ABSOLUTE TOP, TECHNICAL MASTERY, LYRICAL AND THEMATIC, ESSENCE AND SIMPLICITY. WITHOUT MAKEUP.
Such pure music
What strikes me most is that these three giants of virtuosity on their respective instruments can be so humble ,delicate and selflessly integrated in this lovely chambermusic masterpiece.
Lo mejor del Sr. de Bonn
what a nice comment.. as how people tend to play more for the audience but just for the music itself
There is something about the combination of the somewhat steely sound - but very clear and precise - of these Russian recording's from the 50- combined with the absolute dead on intonation of Kogan! And the gentle statement of the theme in the andante is heartbreaking.
Beethoven archduke trio is the best and emblemastic piece of this style perform for this three genius gilels, kogan and mtislav rostropovich.this music look Like from the mother galaxy...
Three voices, one instrument. They play as if they were at one with each other. I look for this ensemble always but rarely ever find it. Perfection such as this is a miracle.
Johannes Brahms,
If you are still on the "other side", you must know that you can search for these recordings in the Planetary Akashic Library. Ho.
@@swordoff7 Not sure what the "other" side is.

Unrepeatable performances will forever remain unsurpassed masterpieces!
Thank you very much for sharing this sublime masterpiece of the genre, and the performers are arguably among the very best.
They are among the very best. No arguments about it.
Three genius, a masterpiece. What else?
Schubert's Trio no. 2
@@militaryandemergencyservic3286 Thanks for the recommendation! The story should not end here.
@@moccagriselda well the Schubert trio is second to none. especially the 2nd and third movements..
Surely the most perfect trio - from performers and composers. Just out of this world.
The standard of perfection !
Beautiful passages everywhere.
bravo et merci beaucoup!!! oh, such sweet violin and piano...
Just wonderful!
BEAUTIFUL SOUND AND MELODY !!!
Graceful, descent , true spirit of classicism.
A rare gem of musical expression, by the finest of musicians of one of Beethoven's greatest works, and recorded in precarious times in the Soviet Union, which perhaps gives the work that extra edge of intensity and beauty. As said in comment below: 'beautifully delicate interpretation', and just so, in contrast to the horrors that endured in 1956 long after the death of Stalin in 1953. Yet this performance may well have been a testimony of relief and hope to some extent that human dignity, hope and justice might now prevail.
Yes in the 50's as a teenager, escaping the ravages of Europe, I was heartened listening to Gilels' playing. These were pirated vynil recordings that I sought out in NYC and kept wondering how such stregnth, optimism, virtuosity could still persist so far away.
Ralph Berney ー
After Stalin Khrushchev instituted many liberalization reforms, not to say life wasn't tough in the USSR, but Stalin's reign of terror was greatly attenuated. Still, let's not forget, there was the Cold War going on. Stalin was clinically paranoid, so such harshness as Khrushchev imposed paled in contrast. Live remained tough, but the purges and the abject terror were gone. Shostakovich's journals are instructive in this respect. After Stalin's death the poor man breathed far more easily!
@@princeandrey and Anti-semitism was rampant, and great musicians, such as this trio, had had a strong influence from outside to be allowed performances outside of the USSR. That happened again and again, and the best testimony to that are the interviews and memoirs of Gilels, Richter, Rostropovich and Rubinstein.
KGB and Communist Party never released their iron grip on their citizens, including the best of them.
@@stonefireice6058 which one Rubinstein, Mister Marmalade? And what told us Richter and Gilels, Mister Stone Fire&ice who seeds the Truth, his truth?

Jevrejskogo...
Soviet should be dropped though! If anything it was detrimental to any real art.
@@stonefireice6058 Kogan and Gilels were born in Ukraine, Rostropovich in Azerbaijan. So Soviet, not only Russian
C'est sublime, un grand merci. Un bonheur a l'état pur.
The Masterpiece... my favorite moments: the pizzicato with piano trills in the 1st movement, the chromatic fugato trio in the 2nd movement (and the tender variations of 3rd movement....)
And the playfulness of the 4th movement! So the entire piece...
Thank you for sharing such a treasure, incredible ensemble sensitivity
1:39 - Unusual that the second theme of the sonata form is not in the dominant key of F-major (vs. home (tonic) key of B-flat major), but in G-major. And, what a great performance.
loved it specially how it became jazzy @8 minutes..all are geniuses..Gilels was extraordinary though.....Big Spassiba

Odd to see Kogan playing in a chair with arms. As a violinist myself, I can't imagine ever doing that. Maybe this is just for the photo though.
I had exactly the same thought! And Gilels also seems to be on a chair, not a piano stool.
Photographers sense of being creative.
7:00 What a harmony tone!
I would also recommend the live Paris version with Kempff, Menuhin and Rostropovich

Yes best version but also the riff that keeps on giving! This is a rock tune by a rock star. Quintessential variations on a theme.

Are you sure this is from 1956 and not 1950? The sound quality seems earlier.
How is it ive lived all these years witout paying this most famous piano trio must attention . Brahms all 3 have consumed me since middle school and I fell in love with the scores very early too ! Gilels here shows , alertness to felow musicians an sensitivity to music 's being ; true intelligence !Kogan never relaxes but he has the right mood here. e is really one of the most superlative musicians to ever pick
up any instrument ! Beethoven has a comforting, drawn out theme , takes his time developing motifs here personality in some of the piano trios, A Beeth we do not see much in the , piano or violin or more so in the cello sonatas . Not his focus in the symphonies or quartets . There is much more here and they are not trying to be strained ,villyfying or caustic in this music . Amazed , that I'm unfamiliar with this late period trio ! Better find the ket - he is like this in flat keys expressive , warmly expansie like symph 3,4 but not in Bflat op.22 or 2nd concerto or op.106 . Gorgeous moments ! Why didnt Bartok give us a pino trio or piano quartt or quintet. Schonberg we wont talk abut his essays in this genre. Berg i must check seems he left a student piano and string work ?
